Love this place....get a game from the place next door and play with your folks. They have indoor and a covered patio which can be heated if requested. Awesome collection of cocktails and mocktails and decent amount of food options...not too many... Unfortunately, they were out of quite a few things when we went but we liked everything we ordered .... pretzel sticks, falafel salad, Mac and cheese. Mox Boarding House in Ballard has a fantastic concept and a really cool vibe. The space is filled with a wide variety of board games you can try out before deciding to purchase, which is awesome. If you order food or drinks, they even offer a discount on game purchases which is a nice touch. We genuinely loved the idea and were excited to spend time there. Unfortunately, our experience was soured by the way we were treated by our waitress. From the moment we sat down, she never greeted us, smiled, or asked what we wanted. It felt like we were an inconvenience to her. We are not beer drinkers, but wanted to order a few beers and appetizers while playing, just to be respectful and not occupy a table without purchasing anything. When we asked if there were any lagers or less bitter beers on tap, her response was, "Do you want me to read you the menu?" -- said in a very rude and dismissive tone. We were taken aback and didn't understand what we had done wrong. Trying to clarify, we asked if they had anything similar to Bluemoon. She replied that they don't sell any "basic" beers on tap and suggested Rainier if we wanted something "very basic." The way she said "basic" felt condescending and dismissive. We just wanted to have a beer that was not too bitter considering that most places in Seattle sell hop heavy beers like IPA. We still ordered a couple of beers just to continue playing, but the interaction left a bad taste. We found a game we really liked, but instead of buying it there, we chose to purchase it on Amazon due to the poor service. If Mox is going to charge a 20% gratuity on food and drinks, they should ensure their staff treats customers with respect. The concept is great, but the experience was disappointing. read more

What a cool concept! This is a board game bar/restaurant where you can try out games with your friends and then if you like them you can buy them and take them home. They had a ton of games to choose from which were organized very well and the staff was super knowledgeable about all of them. They brought food and drinks right to our table which was big enough to also do gameplay on. We tried a new game which we ended up loving. I'm so disappointed that the cheesecake they served came without the fresh strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries that were advertised on the menu. The berries were the whole reason I ordered the cheesecake and I think it was messed up for Mox to serve it to me without telling me first that they didn't have the fresh fruit to go with it. If I had known they were out of the fruit, I wouldn't have ordered the cheesecake in the first place. To make matters worse the server wasn't even apologetic until I specifically asked about the missing fruit. The cheesecake cost more than everything else I ordered put together so it was frustrating to receive something that I didn't even want to eat. Thankfully the other people sitting at my table enjoyed the cheesecake because I didn't take more than one bite. I ordered the side Caesar salad and appreciated that there was a small portion offered on the menu. I loved my iced oat milk mocha. It was creamy and tasted deliciously flavourful. The staff at the front were really nice and my friends and I had a great time trying out new games and hanging out. My wife and I have frequented Mox as our go-to game buying shop in Seattle for about two years now. We have been trying to come up with a new tradition to do on our weekends together and decided that going to Mox to play board games since our space at home is limited would be fun because the space has always been welcoming before. We looked up ahead of time and saw that the cafe was closed until 4 on Thursdays (our weekend) and so decided to stop and get drinks before going into Mox. When we got to the store we saw on the door that there was no outside food allowed, but sealed drinks were allowed so we entered with our beverages. Employees saw us enter and even commented on the games we carried in with us, and were typically warm and inviting as is our usual experience at Mox. We sat down at one of the tables in the board game area and had just barely opened the first game we were going to play when a scrawny male employee showed up out of nowhere and told us "if you're going to stay and play games you can't have any outside food or drink." I asked him if our drinks counted because they were sealed and that's what it said on the door and he said "No it says no outside food or drink allowed". I told him that's not what it says and tried to get clarification but he said "no that's what it says" and then ducked into a back room. I was content to keep playing since in my mind we hadn't violated any rule, but my wife was now uncomfortable and wanted to leave so we packed up and left. As we were leaving the same employee was standing at the door and reading the posted rules. He looked up and saw us leaving, then quickly ducked his head and scuttled away without saying anything. Honestly this has completely soured my experience on the store. This was supposed to be the start of a brand new tradition for my wife and I, who have been coming to Mox for years and have eaten and drank at the cafe several times before AND even hosted events for our social groups there. I've never once had a bad experience, but it goes to show that one employee who either doesn't understand the spirit or the letter of the rules can really screw up the situation for everyone. read more

This is genuinely one of my favorite spots in Seattle because there's a mix of board games, community and food! There is everything from a tournament room to a family/children's section so I feel like it's very versatile and the games are free to rent. The food is also worth checking out because you might end up spending way longer here than you expect. I tried the pretzels for $14 and overall it was worth it. They have some other things. I would like to try like mac & cheese and tater tots but it is a really nice ambience and the employees are genuinely so friendly and give great suggestions. Unfortunately, my only con is that parking is so hard to find, because the spots in front and access to the buildings all are always filled. read more

There's Vietnamese, Thai, and Mediterranean all in one menu. My group and I ordered soft pretzels & queso and vegetable & hummus plate to snack on as we played games. The shareables we ordered were alright and I wouldn't come back solely for the food. The vibes are fun with all the game options! We played 2 games over a ~75-90 minute period. We loved the game options you can play while dining, we loved the music playing, we loved the crowed, the venue was clean + well lit, and the staff was kind + attentive! This Cafe has gone severely down hill since opening many years ago. I love Mox and Card Kingdom as it has been a staple for the nerd community for a long time now. Stopped in for a father's day treat and the disappointment was great. Our waiter, without introduction, went straight to business and asked "you guys want any drinks?" The drink selection is good but the food is pretty limited. The Cafe was fairly noisy, not because of the customers, but due to the employees. We settled on getting a couple appetizers including the Tokyo corn dogs and the Tavern Mac and Cheese. Food came pretty quick which made sense. The corn dogs tasted of frozen quality but covered in sauce and mayo. The Mac and cheese was a travesty. Bland al dente past covered in flavorless melted cheese. Beechers Cheese is literally in the same city folks! Thankfully we waited to order mains, as we chose not too after first tastes. With each poorly constructed appetizer costing nearly 20 dollars, returning will be out of the question. read more

There is plenty of space, with tables of varying sizes, including outdoor seating to sit and play at depending on the size of your party. You can even sell cards here. The guy is a bit shrewd but I guess that comes with the territory I suppose and it really is a cool offering they have, exclusive to this particular Mox. Mox is the place you go for your gaming needs and wants. You can find the gamut of RPGs, card and turn-by-turn games, miniatures, and even previously played ones. There are places to paint miniatures, tournament tables, and much more. For gaming, this is your place and geek heaven. There is a dining area in the style you might find in your standard adventure game. That's where it fails. Running a retail operation is different than running a restaurant. Casual fair, with lots of veg options, drinks, and snacks. You are welcome to bring your own games or they will provide them. The food was lackluster, and my falafel was soggy at best. Everything costs extra. Service is tricky. While they want you to stay game and eat, the wait staff becomes impatient if you do not do both continuously. It makes the experience sub-par. If there were signs that said,"One drink per hour" or the like might help to relieve the expectations. Rating the parts of Mox separately would be more fair but that's not possible. Go for the gaming, avoid the dining. read more

We didn't get actually food, but just a charcuterie plate. They had Italian soda's but the soda machine was broken. It's just seltzer water with syrup and cream, but oh well. Service was alright. A cute board game cafe -- it's half board game store and has a seating section too. The store half has an UNREAL selection of all the classic and a ton of new games! Everyone is bound to find something they'll enjoy. We came with a group of ~6 for the café to order some food and drinks and play some games. They had a decent selection of beers and ciders and the Brussel Sprouts were tasty and easy to share. I wish they'd had more games to check out while playing, though. A lot of the popular ones were taken and the suggestions were pretty complex to understand. An unexpected experience for a non gamer, that was positive. Showed up here today, battling traffic at rush hour. Our Singapore friend specifically asked to come here, to get some gaming cards no one else offered. So, I thought this was a restaurant with a few board games. A case full of fancy dice and even dice earrings. Gaming asserories, gloves, clothes . Recognized how wrong I was, with the wide variety of everything a gamer could want. At the risk of sounding like an nongamer, what incredible variety and dedication to games. this place offers. My Singapore friend wanted specific cards, so she needed to go online at their computers to access cards. My friend and I went to the bar to hang out. A lovely variety of drinks were offered, we went with the non alcoholic lemonade. Helpful staff. Lots of snack type food and many different kinds of beer. This place was packed, not a lot of places to sit. One of the very few restaurants I have ever been to, where people played games while they ate. There was a reader board outside, listing the game events for the day and times. They had quite a few games, approximately five different game events. There was a Pokémon event while we were there. The Mox staff had one room for this event and a moderator to help run the games. Our Singapore friend was very happy with her overall experience.
