The food was good but not "great". The sandwich was lacking ham, there was barely any on on it and the ham was overcooked. Mussels that my fiancé raved about and called best in the city were just good. Again--not exceptional. He even said they're usually better (he's dined here before, I haven't) The Carbonnnade flamanade was great! Their fries were also fantastic. Our cheese board was also good (aside from me not liking blue cheese and it having blue cheese on it) Overall, I really liked it but it's not my favorite in the city or anything like that. Dressing and greens were fresh - the strawberry substitute was meager at best. Had mussels and fries. The mussels were perfect. The fries were coated in salt and not edible unless the salt was scrapped off. When asked about the salt, the waiter called them "atypical". So, why were they served if not how they typically prepare them? No offer to make it right was forthcoming. Also ordered the French Onion Soup - it was mostly bread - yes, mostly bread. The broth and cheese were fine but I left a bowl full of onion soup soaked bread behind in the bowl. Service was slow even though the restaurant was not busy. Had a beer and a bottle of still water which was fine. Total bill, before tip was $100. Was charged $103 as they added $3 for credit card use. Ok, I get it, but this is really odd anymore and added insult to injury as the dining experience was not good. Restaurants are struggling and my wife and I support local spots all the time. Unfortunately we won't be back. Hopefully they'll climb out of it and remain viable. Three stars is generous and recognition for their longevity- maybe we caught them on a bad day.

Robert is wonderful in the front of house and will make sure that your experience is to expectation and Chef Thackray's use of ingredients make you feel like grandma was helping her in the kitchen while she puts a modern flair on each dish. The Hungarian and Austrian wine selection is amazing and they offer 2 full bars. The restaurant is a cozy, 2 floors with bar and table seating. The potato salad was chilled with a zingy dressing. It was delicious! One of those you just keep going back for more. Tomatoes were fresh and on top of a delicious bed of shaved beets. It was summer on a plate, and the punch of flaky salt was the chef's kiss. For entrees, I ordered the catfish and my wife had the chicken paprikash. The catfish was outrageously delicious. It was in a vibrant tomato sauce that had a subtle heat on a bed of corn. My wife's chicken was fork-tender, and the sauce paired with the acidic cucumber garnish was the bite of the night! For dessert, we had the golden walnut dumplings. It was good. I was so excited for the brown butter but did not taste much at all. The dumplings were fantastic, however. Even though they were topped with only 1 ring of red onion, it was the perfect amount to add a zesty kick without overpowering the dish. We got the chicken paprikas ($16.95), stewed beef ($18.95), and puszta steak ($18.95) for entrees. This is when I realized that our dishes were super similar. The chicken paprikas and stewed beef had a similar texture and flavor profile, and were both served with dumplings. The puszta steak was covered with the potato pancake and fried, so it had a very similar vibe to the apps we had earlier. No complaints about the dishes, though-- I'd recommend the chicken paprikas or stewed beef if you enjoy tomatoey, bell pepper-forward flavors. The dumplings were tender and absorbed a lot of the stewy sauce. If you enjoy fried foods, or want to try the potato pancake and an entree but are limited on stomach space/budget, the puszta steak is a perfect choice that will give the same crispy vibe as the potato pancake with an added protein bonus.

Once he passed away, the current owners took over and turned it into a restaurant. The owner graciously sat with us and talked about the restaurant. She even told me that my last name, Kovach, equates to Smith in English. Apparently, it's a popular last name. My grandfather was Hungarian, so it was nice to get a little taste of his culture. The owner and her husband are the only ones that run the restaurant, and they rub a tight ship! My husband & I enjoyed our meals, and here is what we had: Creamed Onion Soup: The soup's name perfectly describes what this soup tastes like. It is creamy and very onion forward. It was delicious but on the lukewarm side when eating it. Chicken Paprikash with Dumplings: This is a popular Hungarian dish, and it was delicious. Of the four in our group, three of us had eaten maybe 1/3 of our entrees (plates mostly full still), and without asking, the server came through, took our plates, and stacked them on top of each other, before we even had a chance to ask for a box. It is pretty small, though, so if they do get busy, reservations would be necessary. The menu is either a vegetarian fixed option or a vegan fixed option (apps, choice of salad & entree, and dessert) and comes with suggested wine pairings for an additional fee. I had the vegan options and my coworkers had the vegetarian options. We didn't have the wine pairings but I did have to try 2 of their cocktails - the salt & vinegar was so good! It really did taste like a salt & vinegar potato chip in martini form! It was so good!! The other one I had was an heirloom tomato kind of drink - it was like a very gentle Bloody Mary, you could taste the wine in it but then you also could taste the tomato part. The food was also delicious - the portions were sufficient, the plating was really pretty and the flavor of everything was really interesting (never would have thought you could make cabbage into pastrami!). There is an option to have both entrees so I did and the lions mane was also delicious. The dessert was probably not my favorite, it was some kind of blueberry thing, but it was still tasty. I would definitely come back again the next time I'm in town!
