This was at a party I attended. They had lots of offerings based on their menu. It was traditional pizzeria choices with some Italian dishes too. I was able to have a bunch of slices of their cheese pizza. Overall, it was okay. I actually preferred it when the pizza was reheated in the oven. The ratio of tomato sauce to cheese was ideal. The crust really was the disappointing factor of this. I thought it was bland. I did like the tomato sauce though. The sauce was light, but not too light where it was an issue. Will I go back? We stopped at Mr Assante to pick up dinner on the way to a meeting last night. It was a last minute decision so we didn't know what to expect. We were extremely happy with the dinners we ordered. We both had Veal Parmesan with Spaghetti, and it was terrific. Cooked perfectly, pasta al dente, and hot. All made even more impressive because it was take out. Salads were fresh and the Blue Cheese dressing was excellent. We highly recommend this restaurant, and even though we had not been there in a number of years, we were pleased to see that it was still just as good, so we'll be back very soon. read more

After all the good reviews, I think tonight they just phoned it in. Fettucine alfredo tasted nothing like butter, cream, or parmesan, just a glop of white stuff that was gluey, yet thin. The salad was two handfuls of spring mix from a bag. And the pizza was just pizza, there's a place two minutes away off the highway that's better and cheaper. Edible, but not memorable. read more

This place has decent pizza. They deliver to my kid's school on Fridays and he will eat pizza in school and come home and want it again. We have ordered from here numerous times since we moved closer to the restaurant in August. The more of it I eat, the less impressed I am. Mostly it's good, but the crust gets chewy and tough. I wish I took pics... we ordered for delivery even though Mr. Assante is only 2 or 3 lights from me. We ordered, again, with no pictures to show for it, A cheesesteak, and buffalo chicken pie, and a Caesar salad. There was a slight issue with the order; The Caesar salad was like a half salad and sauce was on as opposed to on the side; Mr. Assante without a question handled this without a hiccup in the very best way. They came back within 10 mins carrying a brand large salad and a complimentary 2L soda (which wasn't necessary, but appreciated). Thank you Assante for being prompt, gracious, generous and for leaving our bellies happily full. Back to the food, The cheesesteak was done right, with extra cheese, served on a fresh hero roll. The pizza was cooked to order, and sent out promptly; it came to us still letting off steam. The dough had a chewy bite and a crispy crust. Ugh. I wish I could say I loved this place, but after last night's experience I cannot. My husband and I recently moved to the area from Bergen County (amazing pizza places) and are looking for our go-to spots. We ordered from here several times, even dined in once, and all was well. It isn't the most amazing pizza ever, but it did the job. Until last night - I was craving Sicilian and my husband ordered a whole pie. We normally stick to traditional pizza, which we probably should've. When I tell you the crust was too hard to bite into, and the bread underneath was STALE, I am not exaggerating. It needed to be sitting out for HOURS, perhaps the entire day. I cannot believe they allowed that pie to meet the hands of a paying customer. It very well could have been a one-off, however once is once too many. To serve that is unacceptable. We will be going to ANY other pizza place in the area, not Mr. Assante's. read more

Whenever our travels take us back to the Green Brook area around lunch or dinner, we often make the effort to go back to Mr. Assante. We used to eat here all the time when we lived within walking distance. As is standard in most NJ suburban Italian restaurants, they have a pizza counter with seating in the front, and a more formal dining room with table service in the back. The same food is available in both places. The highlight of the menu for me is the 8 or 9 pastas available with one of about a dozen different sauces. My favorite is the Gaetano, a tomato cream sauce with bell peppers and breaded eggplant. The pesto is also great, especially in summer when they use basil they grow on site. All the other standards are here--veal, chicken, beef, seafood. On the weekends they usually have specials which are worth checking out--things like pasta with broccoli rabe, or rigatoni aurora (pillows of rigatoni stuffed with ricotta and pinched shut, served with a sage cream sauce.) The pizza is also very good--they have regular and wood-fired pies. I haven't found an Italian place near us in Chatham that I like as much as Mr. Assante's. That's saying something. Mr. Assante just is one step better than the rest. It's a family place--Mr. Assante's in the back, and his wife is often cooking with him. His son used to be a waiter but I believe he's now out on his own. It's also BYOB. read more

This is the best family owned pizzeria in the area. The shrimp Parmesan pasta dinner is made fresh and great portions along with their tasty pizza. We order every Friday with Joey! The delivery service is fast and the food always arrives on time. If their busy they will let you know if delivery will be longer so your not looking out the window every five minutes. Slow service, bland food. We didn't have the pizza that everyone here raves so much about, but the things we did try were not impressive. My pesto was basically just a pool of green grease and the meatballs my boyfriend had were bland. The meatballs were also overpriced for just two medium sized meatballs. The soup was bland; my boyfriend had to add a ton of salt and pepper to make it taste like ANYTHING. My side salad was just sad looking lettuce with two EXTREMELY thin slices of onion and one tiny slice of tomato. Maybe we should have gotten the pizza. read more

Came here for any specialty pizza. Nothing crazy, really anything with chicken would have sufficed. They had 3 little slices of veggies pizza & that's all. First are foremost, excellent pizza that always comes out right. The rolls are also wonderful. I haven't had anything myself but a number of my colleagues also very much like the subs. If you can't tell from the above food choices, I've only been here for lunch during the work week and can't really comment on the dinner quality. If you want a nice tasty lunch, it is a great place to go. You will see people of all professions and walks of life here (contracter van sitting next to a high end Mercedes). The staff at the counter can seem perhaps indifferent from a personality perspectve when you go here the first time but they are actually quite friendly. Biggest reasons for not being a higher rating would simply be the atmosphere isn't great. read more

Listen and I'll save you the trouble of reading all the other reviews. This is hands-down one of the best pizza places I know of. I spent the better part of my adult life working in the neighborhood of Mr. Asante. This was a usual location for us to pick up lunch. I had not been there in many years and found myself in the area several times recently. I had mentioned to my brother that I was in that neighborhood and Mr. Asante's was still there and quite busy. He asked if I stopped and I did not have a good reason to tell him why I didn't so the next time I was in the area I did. BAM!! This was like a time warp! Nothing had changed at all! I ordered a cheesesteak and it was exactly what I remembered in all it's glory. On that simple fact I have every reason to believe that everything on the menu is the same as it ever was, which was wonderful! The same people still work there and the one guy remembered me from years ago. (8 or better) If you're not from the area and just passing by, stop in and enjoy yourself. If you are from the area and don't frequent Mr. Asante do yourself a favor, go, and go often. It's a matter of time before another one of New Jersey's bests disappears just like the Texas wiener did down the road. read more

I've live near this pizzeria for years and never went in simply because it's unassuming and barely noticeble as the sign is dull. I tried their meatball parm and found it to be a decent size and pretty tasty except for the cheese. The cheese is really salty and the same can be said for the pizza. Same cheese same salt issue. I started getting my meatball w/o the chesse. My daughter however likes the meatball parm but not the pizza. I also like italian subs. My daughter does not but surprisingly she like theirs. The only other items I ordered were the tuna sub and the lasagne dinner. Both were good. I realized that whenever we ordered food for delivery the subs didn't look like they were cut with a knife instead they looked like they were ripped in half by hand, diagonally and each time the bread was very stale esp. noticeable for the cold subs. The guy behind the counter (young male) is very pleasant but salty and poorly presented food is not for me. Great for a quick plain slice... one of the best slices in the area. The typical NJ pizzeria, probably hasn't changed in 30 years. Pan slices are OK too. Not so great, The Margarita Pie was no es bueno. Same regular pizza sause, same processed mozzarella and crust was doughy. No plum tomato sauce or fresh tomato, no fresh mozz, they did throw some basil on it.... So, for $3 more, I got the same regular pie, less cheese and a little basil. I never complain about restaurants and their service but we went to Mr Assante's tonight. We got here at 6:15 and ordered. At 7pm I asked if we could at least get the boys (twin 6 year olds) order which was one plate of spaghetti and meatballs. Our waitress said she would try. Well after asking multiple times they brought out everyone's meals at 8pm and the boys plate of spaghetti was last to come out. When I spoke to the manager his excuse was they had a lot of to go orders and they were really busy after 7:30 we were one of two tables there. We won't be going there again. Fridays there is broccoli rabe and garlic. Try a slice of that and your smilin Friendly quick service and always a seat to be had. We just can't get anything like Mr. Assante's in upstate New York.... the pies never even made it to the freezer, they were that good. Friendly home-town service in a Jersey pizza pizza joint. I've lived in the Greenbrook area for 12 years now and I've been to Mr. Assante's a few times. I'm Italian and picky about food - I've had good and bad here - but usually it is pretty good for a small place that has pizza as their main product. Had my daughter's bride's maid's luncheon there last week - they accommodated me very quickly when another local Italian place suddenly shut down with my reservation! I tried their pizza for the first time last night. I ordered a regular slice and a specialty slice (chicken and tomatoes) along with garlic knots. Overall, this place is mediocre at best - it wasn't bad but I have had better. The pizza was good and did its job, but it wasn't great nor memorable. I found the garlic knots not seasoned well enough nor as garlic-y as I would like (just seemed like a few sprinkles of garlic powder on some bread). I give them a 2.5 stars for somewhat satisfying pizza and reasonable prices, but they do not deliver and their garlic knots are not up to par. This place has been a fixture for more than 30 years. I came here when I was in high school and I'm now 51. I had my wedding rehearsal dinner here. Just went back again last night. The food is very good and ample. Just across Rt. 22 is Carrabba's. Carrabba's is just as good but there you have to wait in line on a Friday. Mr. Assante is a great alternative. I'm moving out of NJ in a few weeks and will miss this place. read more

We had a very disappointing dinning experience this past week. We dined in and right from the beginning the waitress seemed like she couldn't be bothered with us. She was less than friendly, which added to our less than pleasant experience. The food was less than average and very over priced. The fried calamari was very tough, some pieces were barely chewable, the bread was ice cold in the middle, the entrée portions were large, but not very flavorful.
