Where they used to 1/2 cook the fries and then be sure to drop them fresh for a minutes for every order to get crispy fries they now do not take that step. Best hole in the wall place for a steak sandwich and fresh cut fries. Cash only, limited seating, but absolutely great food. I've been there 4 times, each time getting the steak sandwich and/or a hot dog. I've seen the cheeseburgers and they look good too. The service was a little slow today, but only because the people in front of me ordered multiple sandwiches. The owner thanked me for coming in, and I appreciate that. If you want soda, it's cans only. Fries are long, greasy, and you get a generous amount on every sandwich. Anytime I'm in the area, I stop at Mr. D's. I'm no stranger to french fries, but when a place does handcut, to me it automatically boosts the flavor, whether you get the foodish with the fries in the sandwich or just a regular steak with the fries on the side the fries are what you come here for. Everything comes with it. I once asked and they said they cut a few hundred pounds of fries a day. Personally....I get both every time. let me explain why. The foodish reminds me of a California burrito meets the Primanti Brothers sandwich, but also always get the italian beef jous on the side so i can dip the steak sandwich in it. Don't dip the foodish as it will make the fries soggy and who wants that. I love the tomatoes and onions as they aren't garnish like lettuce, they provide perfect texture, crunch, bite and yet aren't overwhelming sometimes like when you get a chicago dog. It's as no non-sense as it gets with their 1990's decor. While it looks like alot like other sandwich shops, it hides those european roots. No crazy sauces which I like. It's portable, unlike alot of places whosee food can't be eaten on the run. The bread is fresh, firm enough to stay together, but soft enough to sop up juices. Service is on par and what you'd expect. No frills is what I like. Classic unchanged menu is what I like. Cash only is what I don't like, but don't truly mind. They deserve as much respect as other fries on sandwich shops. It gets crowded and for good reason. I'm both happy their aren't open late night, but wish their hours were a little better. This place makes some damn good sandwiches. It's a little hole in the wall type of place with a few tables inside, but most as I did, are doing takeout. It gets pretty busy inside but they take their sweet ass time making sure that the sandwiches are perfectly made. I ordered both their Shish Kabob and Steak Sandwich. Both were good in their own way but the Steak sandwich was my favorite. It was served with tomatoes and onions. The steak itself was thinly cut, very tender and perfectly seasoned. The shish kabob was also very tasty. This was also served with tomatoes. Both sandwiches were served with fires. The fries were freshly cut and also very delicious. This is a place I'll definitely be returning to. Their menu is simple and it all looks good. I'll probably try one of their burgers on my next visit. read more

Today I really had a taste for some meat. I haven't been here for a couple years, but had a craving for a steak sandwich as wanted to finally leave a review. Mr D's is situated on a busy street, with no parking, so you're better off finding parking on a side street just be careful for resident parking only. Be aware that it's cash only, no cards, so you will have to hit up an atm prior. It's a tiny place with only four 4-person tables. I typically order for carry out and eat at home. This is a family run place with a very simple menu. You will see the same people working there every time. The wife is the one taking orders and she's a sweetheart. They have the process down to a Tee, and you will get your food quickly. It's nothing fancy but it's damn good, what they do, they do well. Everything is char grilled, by far my favorites are the steak sandwich and the cheeseburger or the double cheeseburger. The shish kabob sandwich is pretty good too, just be aware it's pork even though it tastes more like beef but again I have a hard time steering away from the steak sandwich. What is a steak sandwich? A thin cut of steak that's been marinated beautifully and char grilled. It comes topped with only tomatoes and onions and wrapped by French bread. It's also covered by thick cut fries. All sandwiches come with fries by default which is cool. The fries are a bit greasy, but in a good way. Mr.D is a great place to pick up food if you need a quick bite and have a taste for some char grilled meats. Give it a try, the pricing is also very reasonable, the steak sandwich is under $12 with taxes. Probably why they only take cash, to keep the prices down. read more

What an incredible find! This mom and pop joint has apparently been around for decades and I was lucky to finally find it in the near northwest side of Chicago. This no-frills place stands alone on a corner in a quasi-residential area and is quite small with only 4 tables of 4 available for dine-ins. You may be better off planning on getting your order to go during peak hours. The food here is absolutely amazing and delicious. I had the shish kabob sandwich which was fantastic. The meat is marinated in a special sauce and charred on the grill with onions and served in a fresh soft French roll with fresh slices of tomatoes. The meat kabob was chunky, flavorful and tender. All their sandwiches come with one of the better french fries that I've had. And the cost was only $10.00!!! Who says you can't have lunch for $10 or less? The most expensive item on their menu is their steak standwich for only $0.25 more which may be the next thing I will have on my next visit. I understand they also serve a great Italian beef at $8.25 and cheeseburger for only $7.60. Mr. D's certainly didn't disappoint for a quick and satisfying lunch. I'm so happy Mr. D's is still around. It's a tiny, Classic Chicago mom and pop neighborhood joint with a fairly typical menu of burgers, hot dogs, fries and quickie grill food, but also kebabs and steak sandwiches. I stopped in the the first time many years ago on the recommendation of a mechanic I was paying to replace ball joints on my old T-bird. He said they were right around the corner and I was hungry, so I stopped in. Anyway, the fries here are really good. I don't know if it's the cooking medium or how they prepare them or some combination, but they're crazy good. Similar to 35th Street Red Hots fries. Continuing my "Italian Beef tour" of Chicago, I was on The Beautiful NortWest Side today, I swung by Mr. D's. Greeted by the friendly and smiling owners , I ordered a beef, fries and Diet Rite (RC products). A value at $8.75, the sandwich had ample meat which was seasoned nicely - though not memorably. A good giardinera topped it off. The bread didn't hold up to the gravy and got very mushy, very fast. It was, however, a very good beef. The star here was the fries. Hand-cut, long , fries were the best in recent memory. Maybe in the team picture of "Chicago's Best" fries! Give me Coke products and firmer bread, and would certainly be in the upper tier of beef lunches. As it is, it's a "must stop" of youre nearby. This was my first time here. This restaurant isn't nothing fancy and it doesn't necessary have to be. The food was actually good. I ordered a beef with peppers. It didn't even need cheese and the fries were homemade. They told me that they only took cash with I tried to pay which I didn't see that anywhere on the door, window, etc. it was not displayed anywhere unless I missed it. My BIGGEST pet peeve with this place was how unsanitary they were!!! OMG! For starters, the actually cook which was a man, didn't have on any gloves. So, he was just touching everything. That wasn't super alarming because he could have washed his hands at the start of everything. It didn't give that vibe but he could have. Plus, he wasn't dealing with any money. However, the lady taking the orders had on gloves, was touching money and making food. It was the nastiest thing ever. I couldn't believe my eyes. So when you go, if you go, and you care about that kind of thing. Just pay attention so you can request for her not to make your food or at the very least to change her gloves. She should not be making food. Her only job should be the cashier! read more

Hello Foodzies, today for lunch we tried a small mom and pop place in chicago called D"s shish kabobs at 6656 w Diversey. It's a cash only family run place, mom takes the orders, dad cooks and son puts it all together. Mom's the order taker and she very pleasant. There is one line table in the back. Otherwise it's basically a carryout restaurant. The food was slightly over priced in my opinion. We ordered the steak sandwich and shish kabob sandwich. Each came with fresh cut fries. The fries could have stayed in the fryer a bit longer. The steak was thin but well seasoned. The shish kabob was a bit salty but flavorful. All in all not a bad meal. I give it 3 stars, don't know if I would make it a habit but we might go back and try the burgers. So feel free to try it out and let me know what you think. Ciao Ciao for now. read more

CHARRED & SKEWERED The unlikeliest of places serves up mean meats on the mean streets of the Montclare neighborhood. This is the kind of place that Dennis Farina (RIP) would've eaten at if he was a normal guy. You remember Dennis Farina. Jimmy Serrano from 'Midnight Run', Ray Barboni from 'Get Shorty', the narrator of 'Unsolved Mysteries'. Classic mobster personality, unmistakable voice. I only mention this because while eating lunch here on 7/12/18, I saw a guy that looked JUST like the late actor, and heard another guy that sounded just like him. It makes sense, since Dennis F was actually born in Old Town and served on the force for 18 years with Chicago's finest. Anyways, back to the story. Mr D's is from the late 1960's and looks like the part. It's run by an old guy and his wife (presumably this is Mr D and Mrs D). Steak sandwiches are a standout item that won them accolades as part of the Chicago's Best series. Everything is cash only, and that's okay cuz it's relatively cheap. My kabob ($8) came with tomato slices, grilled onions, and a lemon wedge.....which gave the huge chunks of kebab meat a fantastic zip. Fries are included with every sandwich, so don't be taken aback by the prices. The freshly cut fries are amazing, some are crispy crunchy while others are nice and potato-y. Pop is $1, served in cans, and yes, RC Cola is one of the choices. They still have a corded, landline phone that makes the seldom heard "brrrring brrrring". Awesome. * TL;DR * If this place were any more 'old school', they'd be serving sabertooth sandwiches on stone slabs. Mr D's has been around for eons and apart from new paint, it's doubtful that anything has changed since then. It doesn't even bother me that they're cash only. The kabobs are excellent, the fries are great, and it brings me endless joy to think that maybe -- JUST MAYBE -- Dennis Farina once came here on his lunch break as part of CPD's burglary division from 1967-1985. This space is spot on!!! I sampled two steaks sandwiches, one w/everything, another with just grilled onions and a double cheeseburger. Uncomplicated menu with delicious sandwiches. If it ain't broke don't fix it. That's Mr. D's jn a nutshell. It's an old school 3 person operation that runs like an efficient Toyota factory. Lunch time gets pretty packed but they keep it moving. The father and son bickering helps pass the time as well. A simple menu with no more than 15 items helps too. I've gotten the steak sandwich, the shish kabob made from pork tenderloin, and the double cheeseburger. All three hit just right. And all sandwiches come with delicious and longest fresh cut fries I've ever seen. As far as the sandwiches go the steak and kabob are nice and tender. The French bread in which they are served on hold up great. The burger looks like something you've had a million times at every backyard bbq you've been too but tastes much better. I gave Mr. D's 5 stars bc, one I think they deserve it. They are extremely consistent and I like their food. And two bc it's exactly the kind of place I like supporting. Small businesses who don't take short cuts and let their product dictate how successful they are going to be.
