40 years I been going here was it was always outstanding like unbelievably delicious but it's been 40 years and I guess everything changes went in there today and it was OK not great just OK which is a major change considering it's always been great. I did not get what I've expected. Usually the sandwiches whole and my fries are right on top and the sandwiches delicious and juicy and the fries are crispy and tasty today my sandwich was cut in half and it was not juicy and tasty and my fries were soggy and not as tasty and they were on the side not on the sandwich holiday they usually are so that being said it was OK but I'm used to being great I won't be going here anymore if you've never been here before, I'm sure you'll think it's pretty good but it ain't what it used to be the shish kebab which I don't care about it just didn't have the same flavor or serve the same as it's been served for 40 years. I don't know why it changed, the fries were soggy and tasty which it's known for having fries in the world and that I believe it's because Mr. himself is not really preparing the sandwiches anymore young man behind the counter is really lacking so after 40 years, I will not be returning there, I can get the same shish kebab sandwich and fries anywhere in the city mediocre is everywhere but it's OK. It's just not great. I do want to say thank you Mr. Dee for 40 years of fantastic food. It was always a pleasure to come and eat at his shop. We've been twice in the past two weeks. First time we had hot dog and steak sandwich, today was the hamburger and shish-kabob. All of them came with a huge helping of fries, today's were exceptionally good being super hot and fresh, the best way of having cut fries. The woman taking orders is so nice and sweet. She is super friendly and welcoming. The man making food generally has small talk with customers as he cooks. It's definitely a cute relaxed spot that's nice to have in the neighborhood. And always go for the ice cold RC Cola, love having that as a drink option. Check them out and keep supporting small family owned and operated businesses. Cash only! read more

Since I first discovered this location with my dad, it was our go too for the steak sandwich with fries and of course the grilled onions that came with it. The Italian beefs are also a staple. Very clean location. The owner is always friendly, he loves telling stories to the regulars. Akways would roll up his sleeves to help out with the long lines. Very friendly staff. Quick service. You get your food in no stop, hot and delicious. You never go wrong with Mr. D's if you are ever in the area and want something. Stop here you will not be disappointed. steak sandwich ($6.50) - 3 stars. The steak was nicely seasoned and not dry, but as a sandwich, it was lacking oomph and wasn't balanced. Like I took a bite and was not impressed by how the sandwich tasted as a whole. Maybe too much bread-to-filling ratio, or the fillings weren't working well together for me. It didn't help that I wasn't a fan of the bread, but then I'm really picky with my breads. If this sandwich had used Romano Brand's bread and was paired with a nice, melty cheese, then it'd rate at least a 4.5. pork kabob sandwich ($6.60) - 3 stars. Same issues as with the steak sandwich. Did not eat the bread. 4 pork cubes to a sandwich. It's a waste for me to order this again because I'd be paying about $7 to eat a pork kabob, 2 tomato half-slices, and a lemon. Order a Shish-Kabob at Mr. D's and watch them remove a skewer of pork and onions from a marinade and set it on a scorching-hot grill; then enjoy the spectacular aroma as the fire works its transformative magic! Once the meat is beautifully charred, they place the Kabob in a bun and remove the skewer. This Kabob is a wonderful combination of tart-savory-sweet-moist-brilliance! It is always Great! The French Fries are always terrific too. French Fries come with every sandwich, but you'll want an extra order as well; I usually do... The fries are peeled(though, some skin does remain - Yum!) and cooked fresh throughout the day. Sometimes the fries come out a little extra crispy; sometimes a little less crispy... Ambiance: not much to say here, it looks like a run-down counter with simple chairs and tables you might find at a church cafeteria. The service was a little brusque with not a smile to be found... except for those eating. Food: Simple and good. Thin (~2 mm) wide well-seasoned piece of steak that hits the grill and half-cooks half-catches of fire is sandwiched between a large chewy roll with onions and tomato. There is little to criticize as the meat is tender, super tasty, and smoky from being set aflame. The fries were a good texture and well-fried without being too processed like a fast-food chain. Definitely worth the $7 for the meal although would be nice to buy the sandwich individually from the fries but its a common strategy to increase profits because potatoes are dirt cheap relative to other ingredients. I recommend giving this place a shot if you're nearby. read more

Amazing food. Best steak sandwiches I've tasted. The fries are amazing and freshly cut there. A little on the pricey side for fast food- but the quality makes it worth it. Two steak sandwiches with fries and 2 cans of pop costs over $20. So yeah. Not the best for a quick and CHEAP bite to eat. Your food is cooked to order in front of you. Walked into this place expecting more of a deli - only because I was told there's a great deli along this stretch of Diversey. I went in and looked at the menu - saw the shish-kabob stuff, but was in a hurry and on my way to work, so I wanted to pick up something "familiar" and take it with me. I opted for a combo. It was REALLY good. Sausage had an outdoor grill taste to it - not quite like one I've tasted before which set it apart. I finally had the famous steak sandwich everyone always raves about. You guys have no idea how excited I was! Upon unwrapping our to go order, there was this grilled steak smell. Only the kind you smell at a bbq or camping. I realized the fries were longer then both my fingers together, must've been huge potatoes!! Each were perfectly salted and soft so not too crunchy which is exactly how I like my fries!! Now... the steak sandwich... I am Latina so I always said my parents marinate their steak to perfection. In their country this is a must to survive. Lol! Jk but their steaks are bomb. Back to my sandwich.. it was such a different taste! It taste so different I mean it has like a middle eastern taste, it wasn't too cooked either so taking a bite of it wasn't like battling to pull apart! It was just THE BEST STEAK SANDWICH.
