I have been going to this restaurant for over 20yrs. It's just as wonderful as I remember it. Servers/bartenders are always a pleasure and great service. The food just brings back so many happy memories and quality and portion size is great for cost. I always love just looking around and staring at the walls & shelves. You never know what you might spot. This time I ended up brining home Pickle beer after curiosity won and a chat with a bartender. It was fun brining my oldest back and sharing memories with him. Definitely give the schnitzel cordon bleu sandwich out on a brioche bun. That was absolutely divine! This is probably the only original thing left in the Volusia Mall at this time. Sadly was a bad experience. Always good but not this time Service is horribly slow. Waitress was new she said. She said soda machine in the back broke and it's been one of those days. The manager said he made the sandwich that was cold inside of my hot sandwich. I said it should have been toasted in a grill again. He said they don't have a grill. King and short of it, the food is microwaved. He offered another one but this time I declined. Such an unexpected find in Daytona Beach MALL! It was my first time at Mr. Dunderbak's, so I didn't know much going in, but the young lady who helped me was super informative and friendly. She even let me sample a beer before committing since I wasn't sure if I'd like it BUT I DID ! The whole place feels like a little slice of Germany, with quirky signs, cool decor, and a deli full of fresh meats and cheeses. I had the Der Black Russian : triple decker, ham, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, served with a pickle and chips. Perfect lunch meal! There's plenty of seating, from tables to the bar, so room for the whole family & this spot was full of good vibes. Playing the latest 80s and 90s maybe 70s too but idk. They've got games, souvenirs, and a staff that makes you feel welcome. Definitely coming back when I'm in town again! read more

This is my first time at the Volusia Mall and it's a typical mall. There was nothing to break about except for this small German place. Bar? Restaurant? Store? This place is decked out with tons of vintage signs, cool craft beer and a nice deli menu with tons of options. The atmosphere was really cool. When I went to the mall to go to stores, I didn't expect this to be my favorite place. I don't know what I'm gonna eat. Next time I go back, but I will definitely be trying one of their beers from there. absolutely huge collection of options. I got the Reuben sandwich because I asked and that's what they told me was the best seller. It was a nice sandwich that I didn't think was too overly priced. $13 for a Reuben on rye bread and with potato chips. It definitely deals and looks like it's a Volusia County Staples. What a portal! We were in the mall when we noticed the interesting name and storefront. Drawn in, our party looked over the expansive menu and concluded there was something for everyone. We stepped in and were happily surprised by how cool the interior was! Lots to look at while you wait for food. Although, because there is so much stuff, the space could use a thorough dusting. Service was great! Our server was prompt, friendly, and created a comfortable environment for everyone. Food! We loved the fried pickles! That was our favorite item. I enjoyed my sausage platter, but the sauerkraut was too salty. The pickled red cabbage good and the bratwurst was delicious with a good snap. Heard about Mr. Dunderbak's shortly after moving here and was excited to find a place with German and European groceries! Happy to have a local source for red cabbage, good pickles, cooking mixes and especially baking supplies & cookies! They have decent food (although wouldn't really call it a German menu) with a variety of sandwiches. Great selection of beers from all over the world! Lots of cool stuff to look at on the walls and shelves. Nice candy selections in the deli - we have purchased meat and cheese several times but meat was definitely rancid once. LOVED the food here. Its such a fun and authentic German restaurant that has been around in Tampa for ever. Went during the holidays, so they were running a little Christmas market on the inside with all kinds of German holiday candies and gifts. They always have the retail open, they sell all kinds of German goodies and chocolates - even Haribos that you cannot find in the US! Food wise, I ordered the sausage platter with 2 different types of sausage, sauerkraut, and homemade apple sauce. I loved the kraut and applesauce, so delicious. The sausage I liked the most was the kielbasa! We did order dessert, but were surprised by how long it took. We waited about 30 minutes for dessert which was strange, and the server never came to the table to check in with us or update us, seemed like he was avoiding the table lol. 1000000/10. I first tried this place in Tampa, and was surprised to know they had one much closer to where I live! It was my birthday weekend and all I wanted was a good schnitzel. Yelp'd "German food" and this was the first place to pop up in the Daytona area. What we didn't realize was that it was inside the Volusia Mall. We parked and entered right in. Lit up in red, we were so intrigued. We were self sat and was immediately taken care of. I ordered the Jaeger schnitzel with American potato salad and German potato cakes, and my boyfriend order a bratwurst. We paired our meals with Leffe, which is what I always drank all the times I've visited the country. The food came out quickly, and let me tell you. My eyes lit up SO WIDE, I couldn't believe how good it was! Almost identical to Germany's. Food is so affordable and you really do leave full, the good kind of full. We stayed and drank more beer until closing, and played games they had on the counter. The place is clean and not too crowded. They also have a mini store you can purchase drinks, meats, toys and chocolates. Really brings you back home. I will forever crave this place. And it's WAY better and tastier than the one in Tampa. Mr. Dunderbak's was a great surprise. The sheer amount of German products they carry is truly impressive. I walked out of there with a full, happy tummy in addition to a bag of Spaetzle, pumpernickel bread and a bag of my husband's favorite licorice. I also brought home a Stella Artois chalice that comes with a glass of Stella on Sundays, not that I needed one, but, hey, why not. The Schnitzel was good, the fries tasty and the fried pickles quite tasty. Also got a bite of the red cabbage, which was delicious. The food and drink came quickly and the server was friendly and helpful. Starting in October they will provide the food at Dunes, which is just down the street from us, and I can't wait! read more

Recently was given a free meal from Dunberbaks, so I thought hey why not. And wow, it's certainly improved, I'm basing this off of one meal since the last time I decided to write off this place after they changed up their quality, but it seems like the quality is back. Ordered the tuna salad sandwich and it was one of the "better" tuna salads I've had. I'm fairly strict with my tuna salad rankings lol. Also the fries I ordered where well cooked and a good amount. Gosh, sad to say, sooo disappointed. Three stars as service was great and also spoke to some very nice patrons. Haven't been here in decades, but is my memory fooling me that the lovely smell of this place used to waft out into mall? Lovely smells of toasted and roasted meat and sausages? No inviting smell at all. The fried pickles were great and German potato salad as remembered but when I asked if my sub could be hot (should I have said toasted?), it was like I had two heads. You can even get your Publix subs toasted. They said they could probably do it, but I literally think they microwaved it, bread and all. Then forgot the Italian dressing it seems. I didn't bother to mention it. The microwave-hardened bread was enough to deal with, and even with that, the meat and cheese were tasteless. I took the 2nd half of my sub home, but even the to-go container was broken LOL so it couldn't close. I guess things are never as you remember it and I did hear maybe they were moving, so maybe things will be improved once they settle. We miss Mr. Dunderbak's in NC. My husband said there were two in FL. We came home from a cruise and headed to Daytona. This Mr. Dunderbak's was just as my husband remembered. The space, the set up, the familiarity was just right. Been there 48 years, and I hope it lasts for many more. Our server was great! So sweet and kind, and it was nice to talk to her. Husband got the Reuben that came with chips. My kid and I shared cheese fries. Not fancy, but delicious. Kid got the wings. I had Big Burford, which was grilled chicken, pastrami, and cheddar. Love me some Mr. Dunderbak's! Zicke Zacke Zicke Zacke? Hoi hoi hoi! I've been coming here for years and years and could easily give them a three or a four or a five stars for all sorts of different reasons but I'm going with a strong five for nostalgia. I just love the space, the place. So cool with its Old World Oktoberfest feel. There's a really nice delicatessen and they have all sorts of Euro treats on offer. It's actually the perfect place to build a foodie gift basket. Long before World Market, this is where you went. Who else has beers in the mall? Tucher on draft and all sorts of other interesting ones but no Optimator for me. That's a different story for a different day. And of course there's the food. They have all sorts of interesting German foods and sandwiches worth trying. They're known for those sandwiches. Oh, and the desserts too. Woo, my Gods!!! I worry about them, though, with the mall and all. I sure do miss Wunderbar, the Altamonte mall's counterpart to Mr Dunderbak's that closed a long time ago. Damn, I remember all the cigarette smoke in that place when you could. And there's always Mr. Dunderbak's in Tampa but they're just not the same. The way it's been explained to me a few different times, and I could be wrong, is they were affiliated a long time ago but not anymore; these days they're more like Sanford's Willow Tree, Tampa's Mr. dunderbak's. What a hidden gem use to eat in one in the Omni mall back in the 70s and in the altmont mall but I don't know if they still exists but I do know the bartender server was excellent. My sandwich which was a Black Forest ham and brie cheese grilled on a croissant with German potato salad and a pickle spirit was absolutely delicious. Very simple, clean preparation. The atmosphere is Old world and it just brought back a heap of memories. My partner in crime had a roast beef and bacon and it was gone before I could say boo because he said it was delicious. So if you're looking for a place that's kind of slow and off the veton cash hiding away from the heat of the Sun during spring break or just hiding away on a rainy day. This place is fabulous. They've got a selection of German meats cuckoo different types of beer on draft and Cannon bottles. Mead a good selection of one and a good selection of German products. May 3, I went up to Mr. Dunderbake At first it was crowded so I wandered around the mall for a little while and came back. I sat down. I was there for about 20 minutes. The rest of my party showed up. The girl waited on all of them, but didn't wait on me. Finally, I had to wave her down to get my beer then my friends ordered food chili cheese fries and they never came back to me. Finally about 10 maybe 15 minutes later I get to order my food which was the combo. My friend Food came. We sat there for a good half hour longer after my friends got their food finally, I said what happened to my order. She told me that they only had one Cook and two Friars and nobody had ordered fried foods. Well, my friends ordered french fries. I have to say the place is very rundown. The appearance has gone out the door the service is horrible. The shelves are partly emptied. I don't know. I don't think I'll be back and I will miss the original one. They still got a lot of memorabilia on the wall, but that's about all they got if I could give this place is zero I would. read more

We placed our first order today through Doordash, and it was a debacle. When the food arrived, after I cut the 2 plastic bags open, I realized that one dinner was not included. When I called the restaurant, firstly, the server who answered the phone blamed it on the 'Dasher'..Then, she insisted that it wasn't on the order, and became belligerent when we suggested that she check the order online. We were then passed over to the manager who was equally rude, yelling into the phone, 'Well, what can we do to fix it, and I told her to forget it, that we'd be contacting Doordash. While I was throwing out the food, I noticed what was their 'kitchen receipt' and it clearly showed that they failed to give the complete order to their cook. I'm diabetic, and it's critical that I eat within 10 minutes of doing my two injections, or else my sugar levels skyrocket and I could wind up in the nearest emergency room. For years, we visited Dunderbacks, and food and the service was perfect. It looks like things have changed since the change of ownership. I'll spend my $$$ on establishments that deserve my business. read more

Not only do they have some of the best sandwiches around but they also have some of the best selections of beer you can find. They maybe small but they have a selection as big as Total Wine.
