First of all when they finally close down this mall I hope Mr. Dunderbak's finds a new home in Daytona Beach. Having no sentimental attachment or childhood memories of this small German Deli, I come here for the food and beer. I usually gravitate towards one of their sandwiches or a smorgasbord of sausages. Not having to come to this archaic mall to enter the restaurant would be a blessing for those of us who frequent this restaurant. My visit to Daytona would not be complete without stopping by this bavarian delight and taking in all this store..deli..pub has to offer everytime. Its like walking into another country and the smells of fresh sauerkraut on a Rueben penetrates the mall and floats you toward the lengthy space that has with stood changes around it for years. They have been given Award after award for not only the food but atmosphere. Some say it's cluttery but I say it's detailed in history. The daily specials are the ones to pick but try those potato cakes too.They offer 250 beers so no problem adding a cold one to that german schnitzel. Mr Dunderback's is a German deli/sandwich shop in the Volusia Mall in Daytona. It's a little time consuming and less convenient to have to navigate a mall to pick up takeout, but I chose them because they were a mom-n-pop establishment, and were a quick detour from 95 on my trip to West Palm to buy a car. I was really impressed with the quality of food and appealing menu options. They have a ton of sandwiches and sides, so study the menu a few minutes to take it all in. Food was all fresh, flavorful, and good quality. My least favorite item was described as "potato pancakes" but latkes I did not get. These were like McDonald's hashbrowns, and just really fried and greasy, not how I describe a "potato pancake." But aside from those, my sandwich was excellent, my son got a bunch of chicken nuggets for a value price, and the dessert, while not my choice of desserts (I'm not a fan of chocolate cake), was a hit with my kid. Was expecting a deli sandwich. What I got was a few slices of very salty pastrami on soggy bread. Broken potato chips, a pickle that looked like someone stepped on it and a root beer that was so warm, when I poured it over ice it made my root beer watery. There was nothing good about this place. While in the Volusia mall, I decided we should check out that German restaurant we often passed, looked inside from the front, but did not wander in. I had no clue I would feel like I was being transported to Germany as we walked a long corridor towards the tables in the back. The array of German products available for sale was truly amazing. Many folks around us had ordered an impressive stack of onion rings and we did the same. I am not a beer drinker but, why not. I asked for a recommendation, and was told Hacker Pschorr from the tap. We also ordered two of the house specials of the day. We shared the dishes and agreed that they were both delicious! The beer was incredibly smooth and refreshing!! What Have I been missing?! Bring me another! The second glass was just as great. WOW! This tap beer is good. Can I please have another? After finishing the 3rd glass, my wife told me that I "looked happy." She ordered the German cake and another dessert for me to go. I truly wanted another beer to take with me for later. Luckily, they also sold the beer as a six pack in bottles! Love this place. Food is always amazing. I don't know what it is but they seem to have the best sodas in town. I was worried with the Covid about seating cause it is a small place but I'm happy with the way they have everything spaced out and that they have room next door. My partner and I got the Cajun Dutchman and the kids chicken nuggets. Usually the Dutchman comes on rye bread. But I like white and I think it's so much better on white. Friendly staff and good food. Great little Geman restaurant inside the Volusia Mall in Daytona Beach. They also local brews on tap, a full counter of German lunch meats and cheese. Really authentic feel and charm of a German beer garden. Limvh consisted of Andouille sausage on a toasted roll with spicy brown mustard. Andouille is a Cajun sausage with a little spiciness, very very good. On the side was delicious potato pancakes, perfectly crispy with a side of sour cream. I grew up with a Mr. D's in the Regency Square Mall in Jacksonville. I was pleasantly surprised to find one in Volusia County Mall when we first visited here more than 20 years ago and now that I live here it's great to have a place to purchase specialty beers. They have some very limited brews and hard to find bottles in stock. For example, Goose Island Bourbon County usually has folks lined up when released and most places sell out in a day. Well, they had few bottles just sitting on the bar on display. They also have at least three bottles of Utopia on the shelf. Wow! I've never seen Utopia in person and they have three vintages for sale. Their food is good too. I usually get the New Yorker and then pick up a few treats from the deli counter before leaving. read more

I got a Bud light draft small $5.00 was on the high side for a domestic beer.,. I ordered the Weiner meal with German potato salad and sour krout. The potato salad was canned krout was ok but when ordering the lady asked if hot dog buns were ok... (Not knowing any better I said ok) when the bill arrived they charged me .25 per hot dog buns and dno where on the menu it says they charge extra not did the waitress mention it. It must have been about, jeez, 14 years ago that I was first taken to Dunderbaks. Ever since then, if there is a mall trip planned, there are ALWAYS beers at Dunderbaks after. I never thought one could find something so fantastic in the Daytona Mall (or any mall I guess) but this place is the real deal. Mr. Dunderbak's is one of my favourite lunch places, and a unique little place to boot. It is a lovely haven in our bland local mall. As a matter of fact, I think the only reason I have been to the Volusia mall in years is to walk through the Sears entrance to get to Mr. Dunderbak's, because at that point it's only about a 5 second walk to the location and you can bypass all the distasteful mall nonsense. All of their sausages are wonderful, and their potato pancakes are quite nice (though I suspect they changed the recipe or the supplier because they seem to be less onion-y now). My youngest sister swears their mozzarella sticks cannot be beat, and my constant dining companions loves all of their sandwiches - the Das French Connection (ham, brie, croissant) being his absolute favourite. They have all sorts of excellent beers and the servers/proprietors are very knowledgeable if you have any questions. Which we did, at our latest visit. On the beer menu, they offer something called an "infusion", which aroused our curiosity. The explained it was something they added to their menu a year or so ago and was popular at the time due to the novelty but has since died down to nothing and they will probably be removing it from their offerings. There are certain combinations of flavorings - chili, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, etc. - that they will infuse into your choice of beers to enhance the flavoring, add new dimensions and nuances and so forth. My companion ordered a Guiness + a chocolate infusion which he claimed was rather delicious. Myself, I had a diet soda. Which brings me to the main reason this is one of my preferred area restaurants... THEY HAVE THE BEST ICE! No really, they do. I am not one of those people who says "no ice, please". I want my drink to be as cold as possible, and their ice is of the shaved/chipped variety and it makes for the most refreshing beverage imaginable. I doubt that's a selling point for many folks, but it takes all kinds, now doesn't it? read more
