What a terrible experience. The two individuals from Mr. Handrail arrive first thing in the morning to do the work and ask to use our outdoor power sources. Not a problem, and the crew proceeds to spend all day installing the handrails. That evening when my wife goes to plug our holiday lights back in, the electrical doesn't work and nothing we do can fix it. We call Richard and he stopped by and confirmed that the electrical is no longer working. We set up a time the day after next for him to return and figure out what his crew did to our outdoor electrical source. Richard instead cashes our check, doesn't show up on the day agreed upon, and doesn't respond to any of our emails. Do not hire this company. My indoor stair railing was not up to code and had large gaps between the rails (over 5 inches of space), and with a little one on the way, I needed to fix the issue. Richard was quick to respond via email and most of the questions could be answered via email and sending photos, then a phone call for follow ups and to schedule the appointments to remove the railing and reinstall it. I was a little nervous because the job was so small that Richard didn't think he needed to visit the site to confirm prices or the work needed, but decided to move forward since he had a very competitive and reasonable quote compared to others (cheaper than another company by a significant amount). Scheduled the work and Richard's team came out and removed the railing very quickly and carefully, cleaning up any messes. My household was without a railing on the stairs for a week, then the workers arrived to reinstall. It took 3 hours or so to install it, and they were careful and did good work, cleaning up as always. The railing looks amazing. They blasted off the old paint and replaced it with what appears to be a matte powder coating that matched the same white we had before and looks great. The bars they used to fill the gaps look identical to the others, so the entire railings look brand new and complete. Richard and his team even installed a horizontal safety bar by request because the gap between the floor and railing was too tall. I'm very pleased. The railings feel sturdy and look great; in fact, the railings look better than before and are now much safer. I would do business with Mr. Handrail again and highly recommend them! read more

I hired Mr. Handrail last October to install several railings across my front porch and stairs to give me stability upon entrance and exit to my front door. I am 89 years old and disabled. I was very impressed with the railings but not impressed with their inability to paint out the installation marks left on my walls. They are quite ugly and in the front of my house where everyone can see them. Some black spatter paint was left on the front stairs and Richard promised to have his men come back and eliminate them. I have contacted Richard four times to come out and repair the ugly patch marks his men left on my walls. He promised to fix them but no one even called me back. I sent him pictures but I received no response. I even obtained samples of the paint needed for the stucco walls to no avail. His railings are beautiful but his clean up diligence is lacking. read more

My only problem is that Jeremy and Russell, the installers, and Richard don't do plumbing, electrical, roof repairs, painting, landscaping and construction or car repairs. On time, courteous and professional. They all answered my many questions and assisted with the design, placement and color of my front and back porch handrails. It's not just the finished product, it's attitude. Exceptional customer service. This was not an inexpensive project, and I was concerned that the installation of railings would "mar" the exterior of my home or would not be utilized. They just put in an exterior railing on the front of my house and I'm very pleased with both the outcome and the experience of working w/ Richard's team. After filling out the email request and submitting photos of a style I liked, I spoke to Richard the owner when making the appointment. The crew showed up on time, were very professional and polite, and did a bit of design consult again once on the job based on what I asked for. The owner, Jack, is very helpful, easy to work with, and built some beautiful railings for a new balcony, deck and stairs. His price was also very reasonable. I would give him 5 stars, except for the job his installers did. The railing had to be welded in place since it could not have been transported assembled. The installers did not take the time to use welding blankets to protect our new (about $8000) redwood deck and stairs when they welded everything together. This meant there were hundreds of burn marks from the hot slag hitting the wood. The installers would have been able to both see and smell this, and since it was a windy day, it is fortunate they did not start a fire. To Jack's credit, he did try to make this right, even offering to replace the damaged wood. Jack was great, and I would use him again, but I would be sure to stay home and supervise his installation crew. read more

Richard replied very quickly to an online inquiry. He told us to send photos, measurements and pick a style from their web gallery. Got a quote back in just a few hours along with a message that they had a cancelation and could be there in two days. The guys showed up on time and did the whole (21') job in four hours. I know welding and I was impressed with their work. Cut, bent, welded, ground and painted all in place. The guys were professional, polite and neat. Even my wife was very impressed. As someone else wrote, now we just need them to branch out into other services. :-) But in any case, you can't ask for a better way to get a railing so long as you're willing to stick to their standard styles.
