I recently brought in several companies to bid on a deck project at my home. One of them thought I needed to tear down the entire existing deck along with the foundation. I have a home in Emerald Hills that is all cedar siding and has 4 redwood decks. Both siding and decks are stained, and requires periodic maintenenace, every 3 years or so. I have hired a number of contractors over last 25 years to perform this service, and it's always been a challenge to find a service provider that was meticulous, takes pride in their work, provides good value, and also provides good advice for future maintenance. They repaired a rotting side wall, reinforced another wall, repaired loose boards and reinforced support for those, power washed, and sanded the deck. Carlos at Total Wood Preservation is not only an incredible professional, he is also an incredibly nice person. He is knowledgeable and well-connected. He is an excellent communicator. What started out as a requirement to pressure wash our roof for insurance ended up being a complete upgrade of our home's exterior. Carlos helped us pressure wash the entire house, including the roof, walls, deck, pergola and teak outdoor furniture. He recommended a company to install new gutters and downspouts and recommended a stucco company to transform our very 1980s dated stucco texture to a clean, modern texture and look. Once the roof was pressure washed, the concrete tiles that used to mimic a Spanish look, lost much of their color. Carlos came up with a tile paint that beautifully restored the original terracotta color and our roof looks brand new. Carlos and his team painted all the downspouts and fascia, taking great care to do everything perfectly. The original solid wood double front doors also needed some attention. Carlos's guys spent days painstakingly sanding every nook and cranny before staining, finishing and reinstalling the doors. I am so impressed and really cannot believe the transformation. Every time I asked Carlos about a potential new project, he would either say, "we can do that!" or "I know a guy..." The people he recommends are all real professionals. Carlos took care of communicating and coordinating with the other contractors he recommended and this took a huge load off of me. This project was worth every penny spent and more. We had high hopes as Total Wood had great reviews on Yelp and Carlos was very professional and responsive in his communication and when he came to do his estimate on April 18. He gave us good vibes and we were looking forward to working with him. We went with him because his quote seemed fair and a good value-$2200 to replace 6-8 damaged boards, pressure washing, sanding down and applying two coats of a solid stain on not only the deck but railing and our bench as well. He wasn't able to start until May 12 but the job was completed on May 13. The guys that he sent were hard workers but missed some details for example painting over price stickers that were still on the wood. We also weren't fortunate enough to be graced by Carlos' presence. The guys themselves didn't even know if they specifically would be back the following day to complete our job. read more

I called a couple of deck refinishers and some were so busy they offered estimates based on site pix or came without an appt to see the deck at their own schedule. Carlos took the time to meet with me to see what I wanted done, offered recommendations on which deck boards to replace. I mentioned my Eichler style window walls can get wet with the deck's power wash, and he confirmed he would protect them before doing the prep work. Another company basically declared that was not their concern and it's up to me to put towels under the doors!!! Carlos' estimate was the best, and he was able to fit me into his schedule promptly. He showed up on time with a helper and as promised, made sure water didn't get through the windows and doors into the house. I have added a new deck adjacent to an existing one. It's a challenge to stain the new and old redwood so they look somewhat blended. I went with Carlos' suggestion and it turned out looking great. Depending on the light, sometimes it's hard to tell new from old wood! The work was done ahead of schedule, and the deck held up so far despite the last recent heavy rains.
