Absolutely horrible customer service. Went in to do takeout from the buffet and the waitress just kept forcefully yelling at me to wait for someone to ring me up at the front counter. I waited and waited and waited then asked her again if I could be helped and the waitress just annoyingly walked away. Then she finally comes and asks what I want, I repeat myself for the third time, and she tells me it's $12 for the small box. I had a coupon for one dollar off and she tells me they won't accept it on take outs, even though it doesn't say that in the small print anywhere. $12 is ridiculous for what I wanted, I'd be better off just calling ahead and doing it a la carte. Most take-out buffets weigh the box and have ounce rates, that way the price is more reflective of food quantity. It's a great place to take larger groups with varying tastes because there's a little something there for everybody. Every time I've been there, there has been one employee continuously making a small variety of fresh sushi. Nothing interesting enough to wow a die-hard sushi fanatic, but it satisfies my occasional cravings. There are also soups and appetizers and rice and tons of different classic Americanized Chinese dishes. It's a good thing you can easily fill up on savory dishes, though, because the desserts leave a bit to be desired -- mostly institutional-size canned pudding and off-brand ice cream cups. The fresh fruit usually looks pretty decent, but if you're really looking for something sweet to finish your meal, you're better off stopping by Bruster's on your way home. The waitstaff are not particularly warm or friendly, but that hardly matters at a buffet restaurant. Plus the food is always piping hot and the place seems very clean. We went today for their anniversary special, crab legs on the buffet. They brought out enough crab legs for about 6-8 people at a time, and waited 15 minutes before they brought more. They never kept it stocked with crab legs. People were just standing at the buffet waiting for them to bring more. I started watching the clock and it was exactly 15 minutes before they would bring more each time. Rest of the food was mediocre at best. Not worth $16/person. I truly don't understand how this place has received even decent reviews...I used to eat here often when I lived in Bloomington 5 years ago and it was just okay but considering the options for Asian buffets in the area it was better than most. My most recent visit has made me never want to return. The steam trays the food were in were turned up so high I felt like I was in a sauna, which in turn was causing all the food to be dry and jerky like. The sushi was old, avocado was beyond brown and it was lukewarm which I'm sure was a breeding ground for bacteria. The desserts which have always been laughable had water pooling on top of them like they were weeks old and had sat in the refrigerator...I was truly scared to let my daughter even eat half of the food for fear of food poisoning...even the soda from the fountain was flat from no carbonation! I can't find really any good things to say and considering it was 18 dollars just for my buffet and drink on a week night...I'll definitely save my money and go ANYWHERE else. read more

Went in for a family dinner. Half of the food trays were empty and were never refilled the whole time we were there. We had them make 3 plates of Habachi. Dropped them off on the counter right in front of the gentleman who cooks it. He didnt acknowledge us at all. Walked away to get a few other items. They took them in the back because I guess the front cooker was broke. When we got them back one at a time slowly one was okay, half cooked. Second had no sauce and third was drenched in sriracha which made no sense because no one asked for it at all. BE AWARE!!! Last night me and my 5 yr old came down with food poisoning from our take out buffet. The food was old, hard, and uneatable. 4am and we were both sicker than dogs having to use both toilet and bathtub to help accommodate my child. I contacted them today, the lady who answered agreed that because it was after 8:30 pm, the food was old. She then refused to let me speak to the manager saying the manager was busy in the kitchen, yet kept telling me the manager was telling her things to tell me... from way in the back in the kitchen of course. I asked again to speak to the manager and she said "okay, byebye!" And hung up on me. I immediately called back, she answered again and said the manager said that if I didn't like the food then to not come back. Again, this was apparently said from the "manager who was busy in the kitchen" that would have taken at least a minute just to go back there from the front counter, then time to talk to her about what happened, say another minute? Then another minute to walk back from the kitchen to the counter. So all that happened in the 8 seconds it took me to call back after being hung up on apparently. They refused to replace or refund even though they admitted they served us old food. This is NOT how customers should be treated. read more

Without a doubt, Mr Hibachi is the best buffet restaurant in Bloomington, bar none. The very sizable selection covers pretty much any appetite. Surprisingly, since nothing is prepared from scratch, the flavor of everything served is very good. I eat here on a very regular basis. The closest thing I've ever had to a complaint is that the wait staff does a little bit too much cleaning too close to customers. As a USMC veteran, one of the things I really appreciate at Mr Hibachi is the 15% discount for veterans with military ID. I could not recommend this restaurant more highly. For some reason I can hardly ever drag my roommates here, but I think that this is the best Chinese buffet that I have tried in Bloomington (and I think I've tried most of them). There is a large selection, and I especially love the coconut shrimp. I get very sad when they have coconut chicken instead. They have sushi, but I'm not a huge fan- it's standard buffet sushi, though they do make it fresh, and will make you a roll if you have a specific request. They also have the "make your own stir fry" but I've never had a great result from that. But, all in all, I think this is a great place to eat. read more

The ribs fell off the bone and the sauce was very good They were more like rib house ribs then those things with red stuff on them.. The fried shrimp was sweet. The egg rolls were quite good as was the chicken on a stick. My wife really liked the hibachi chicken. I didn't try dessert as the ribs etc. filled me up. I used to dine at Mr. Hibachi nearly once a month last year, this was the first time I have been there in about 4-5 months for dinner on 5/10/19. The experience I mentioned in my previous review with the wait staff has gotten worse, the food quality is pretty much identical to my previous review. The server took nearly 10 minutes to get to our table once we were seated, I was afraid we would be reprimanded if we went up to the buffet before she came, so we waited. Once she arrived she just said "drinks?" and we both got a soft drink. After going up for one plate of food, she started looking at us and pointing while yelling across the dining area to another server. She came and asked if we wanted the bill only after 3 minutes of eating by saying "pay?" and we said okay. So we went up for another serving of food and then she came back and actually tapped her hand on the table after two minutes when we didnt have ours cards/cash out yet. We took our cards out and paid while she yelled across the restaurant at another server again. I left a what I considered an adequate tip for a buffet waitress in cash and she came and picked it up before we even left the table and said "just this for me?" And I said yes, then she stormed back to kitchen and didn't see her again before we left. Unfortunately I have a reason to believe that if you don't speak the language like some of my friends who are international students, you are treated like livestock. Hands down the best Chinese buffet in Bloomington. Dinner is a little pricey, I will admit, but it's totally worth the few extra dollars. The food is always fresh, and they have delicious house-made sushi and (obviously) a hibachi grill, all included in the buffet price. They have "traditional" Chinese (i.e. Americanized Chinese) cuisine as well as a decent sized salad bar and dessert bar, and a few non-Chinese-buffet items for your friends who just aren't that into Chinese food. The standard Chinese fare is sub-standard. The crab legs are over-cooked in the same nasty water all day. The Walmart of AYCE Chinese food, they even have sushi and hibachi included in the lunch price, which is under 8 bucks prior to the tax -- in 2014, no less! Alas, to be able to get such great value, something had to give -- the place is relatively far from the rest of the town, so it's an extra trip and gas mileage. But their selection and quality is well worth the extra trip. Just make sure to not overeat, which is probably the main challenge here -- the selection and variety of food is simply obscene, and I've only been to their under-8-buck lunch menu! Alright, well here goes nothing. Food wise, it isn't bad at all, but ONLY depending on what day and time it is. Come here on a Friday night and you'll be surprised at how the quality changes on a Sunday afternoon. I would give it 4 stars but there is a reason for the 3 I gave, which is coming up shortly. The staff is why I gave this rating. I think it is possible the staff is racist. I'm mixed (white and black) but look white I guess, to the secular eye at least. Whatever, I'm cool with that. But tell me why when I opened up my fortune cookie, it said monkey on it. I asked how to pronounce this in Chinese and my waiter laughs at me, points a finger at me and my plate (nothing but chicken I'm afraid) and calls me a monkey in Chinese. If this was a way of flirting, then so be it, because I kept coming back. Not for the food, but to see that girl again. I must say, we built some strong rapport but left it in the restaurant. Months later, I got a new waitress. On the receipt for the tip, I accidentally put the amount of the meal (10 or more I believe) and scratched it out. I was going to tip in cash anyways. The girl gets mad, calls me 'cheap' and leaves. I'm completely dumbfounded and some of the other waitresses are staring at me with apathy. That had to be the longest walk out of a buffet I ever took in my life. What did me in though was when I went with 3 of my friends. They griped and complained about me not going, so I went with them. The plan was not to eat there because spending money every weekend on this place was killing my pockets. The waitress comes, gets our drinks, including mine, which was a water, which should be free. Well, after seeing I wasn't going to eat anything, I guess she hated me. She would always refill everyone elses drinks but mine, which was empty. Finally, after refilling drinks for the 3rd time around I say 'hey, you forget about me or what?' She laughs at me, and fills my drink and leaves. The crazy thing is, I still tipped though. IN CHANGE. Every penny I had (literally) went on that table. Sure, my friends called me ruthless or whatever (one even said the way i tipped was like giving a homeless man money) but I'm ok with that. It was better then the first time I went there. I asked for coffee once, and the waitress ignored me and texted on her phone. I snapped my finger and got her attention. I asked for some coffee and she seemed so mad at that. She didn't want to get it, so she yells across the restaurant to some other girl to go get it. It took 10 minutes at least but I learned my lesson. She kept talking Chinese and looking at me with strange expressions, as if shocked I would ask for such a thing. Perhaps, I have a coffee addiction. Anyways,,,, It's been awhile since I've been to Hibachi and have moved on to other venues.
