The falafel was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, perfectly seasoned and freshly made. The mixed grill platter was delicious, with a great variety of meats that were tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The mandi chicken, on the other hand, was absolutely to die for. The chicken was incredibly juicy, tender, and packed with flavor, and the rice paired with it so well. Easily the best mandi chicken I've ever had! It's a shame that my wife and I moved out of Greenwood after Mr Maqluba opened up its gracious doors to the public. Definitely worth a visit for the lucky neighbors if they're ever in downtown Greenwood - probably one of the better restaurants in the area. My wife and I came in on a Saturday evening and were pleasantly surprised that there was a line. It was fast though, and we were seated quickly. My wife and I ordered: Baba Ghanoush (a dip with pita bread) Shish Kebab plate Mansaf (braised lamb) Let's get one thing straight: the meats were cooked fabulously. The beef cubes of the shish kebab were soft and pleasantly chewy with great seasoning, and the lamb of the mansaf LITERALLY fell off the bone. Mr Maqluba delivers on their meats, and that is a winning gesture and reason why we're eager to go back. Our only qualm? The portions seemed a bit off. The shish kebab was fine, but the portions of the mansaf felt a bit odd. A huge, overwhelming amount of rice to one chunk of lamb, with the majority of it being bone. I gave a small sliver to my wife; yet, I feel like I was scraping the bone for more meat WHILE having such an abundance of rice. The portion felt a bit paltry. The baba ghanoush was fine too. Nothing mind-blowing, and they gave only 3 small pita bread slices, which even after scooping generously, does not make a dent in the baba ghanoush. Nonetheless, this mom and pop shop's got grit and soul, which is always pleasant to see in Greenwood and Seattle in general. When we arrived there were only two other people eating there, however by the time we left it was beginning to fill up. The waitress let us sit where ever we wanted. At first we sat a little away from the windows that open out to the street. Our waitress brought us menus and a bottle of cold water, and since I had already looked over the menu we ordered. It was a very warm day and the inside was a tad warm too. So we decided to move up to the front by the large open windows. We ordered two dishes. The veggie plate and the chicken shish taouk. Both were highly recommended on Yelp. The veggie plate came first and we shared. Greek salad, three falafel and three dolmas, plus baba ghanuge and hummus. Pita of course. We both really enjoyed the falafel. Crispy on the outside and tender in the middle. The salad was okay but I was not a fan of the dolmas. Oh yes, the baba ghanuge was delicious. Unfortunately when the chicken dish arrived, both of us were beginning to feel full. The chicken came on a bed of rice. The rice was wonderful. The chicken, although it had excellent flavor, was a little bit dry. We ended up taking most of it home. I'm glad we tried this restaurant. It's the kind of family run in our neighborhood restaurant that we want to succeed. If we return, I will definitely order the falafel plate, instead of the veggie plate. And we might also get an appetizer, just not another main dish. read more

The Dudes Book Club of Seattle recently decided to host our monthly book club meeting at Mr Maqluba. Although it wasn't as widely attended as prior events, Mr Maqluba himself was a gracious host. We were able to not only satiate our appetites, but our intellectual curiosity as well. What more could you ask for from a swell night out on the town in Greenwood? I will come right out and say that service is not their forte at the Maqluba family establishment. The staff was incredibly nice, but it may have taken them a solid 20 minutes to even recognize that our party of five was seated. This led to some confusion on our end. Do we order at the counter? Is there a QR code somewhere? It turns out that they do come to your table to take your order, so make sure that your hunger for conversation is greater than your hunger for food. It became abundantly clear that my homies are well-respected here, because they all got their food 15 minutes before me. After a while, the chef himself came out to apologize and asked me if I wanted a replacement meal. The grill was just being prepared for the kofta, but I had already made my mind up. We were deep into our analysis of the book anyways, and I was smashing Greek fries by the fistful. No issues here. Once I got the kofta plate, I was quite impressed. The shaved almonds on top add an excellent crunch to an otherwise texturally homogeneous dish. The kofta itself was ridiculously flavorful, and I elected to make myself mini kofta sandwiches in the pita that comes with the meal. They must have appreciated our patronage and patience, because they gave us some complementary baklava after the experience. My friend recommended this spot, and I was finally able to come for dinner. It took some time to find street parking on a Friday evening, but it wasn't a long walk to the restaurant. I was immediately greeted upon entering, and didn't need to wait for a table. Service was very friendly. I tried the chicken maqluba, lamb mandi, and the mixed grill plate. I enjoyed trying the different types of rice which were so flavorful and aromatic. The portion sizes were also generous. All the dishes were good, but my favorite was the mixed grill plate. The Homie sent me a menu preview from Facebook which piqued my interest. We weren't able to stop in for dinner on their grand opening day foiled due to last Friday's parking availability. I ended up checking out Mr. Maqluba instead for lunch on 1/13/26 where there was no issue with parking. Scored with free up to 2 hours parking directly across the street. I was curious what refreshed updates were made to the former long time 15 year restaurant, The Olive and Grape. Essentially it now has a wrap around enclosure around the kitchen area. Mr. Maqluba also states from IG that it serves Halal Middle Eastern Cuisine, Traditional Middle Eastern Kitchen, and an authentic Arabic restaurant serving the most delicious Arabic cuisine. Okay duly noted. This was enough to get me to show up and I was seated at a two top parallel to the sidewalk/street activity on Greenwood Ave N. I was given a menu and a chilled Kirkland/Costco bottled water. I also noticed a basket on the table filled with peppermints, bubble gum, and chocolates and napkin wrapped flatware. I went with two faves, an appetizer order of dolmas (7 each for $7.99) and the chicken shish taouk grill plate ($25.99). The latter came with two chicken skewers, salad, hummus, and pita. There was no Turkish coffee service available, so I stuck with the bottled water provided. The dolmas was served hot atop chopped romaine lettuce. I ate three onsite, and later ate the four at home. They were tasty whether served hot or consumed chilled. The main entree was massive, very generous, and easily shareable. I ended up eating the equivalent of one skewer and some of the flavorful rice with spices and toasted almonds onsite. The grilled chicken was in big portions. I had to ask for a knife, since the available spoon and fork would be inadequate and did not want to create any protein projectiles. The accompanying salad added a fresh, bright crunch combined with the romaine from the dolmas. I had to ask for the missing pita in order to try the accompanying hummus. At the end, I requested a takeout container and lined it with most of the pita, the voluminous rice, the other grilled chicken pieces, and remaining dolmas. Taste is, of course, very subjective. But one hallmark I look for when I have Mediterranean food, which I understand covers a lot of geographical area, is being very flavor forward. This comes from marinades, spices, and grilling techniques. And for me, the capacity to hit that optimal culinary note with garlic. The Homie enjoyed the filled takeout container I brought home. But without me saying anything initially, agreed with my assessment regarding flavor notes. I plan to add additional chicken with shawarma spices and toum to finish off the remainder of the generous leftovers. Service was very welcoming and attentive when I requested a knife, the missing pita, and a takeout container. Note: order is taken table side, however, final payment is taken at the host stand. I look forward to trying other menu items with future visits. The food was absolutely delicious! Full of flavor and prepared well. We had the veggie plate and lamb mandi, there was a spicy sauce & tzatziki which was amazing with the tender lamb. We shared the two plates and took the rest home and made soft tacos... which was so good! The hot tea was a lovely flavor with cardamom. Good service, they said up front how long it might take, but it arrived 10 minutes earlier. It was silken, rich, and garnished with an olive oil capable of transporting you to the Mediterranean. Do not skip it. And the fava beans? So. Friggin. Good. They were super flavorful, comforting, and clearly made with love. My friend and I shared both of our plates, and I'm glad we did. He ordered the Maqluba (chicken), and I had the Kofta. When we got to the restaurant there was one table occupied, so not busy. We got our menus and food promptly. We ordered the Mansaf and the Veggie Plate. Portions were good and priced fairly. The lamb was cooked perfectly. The veggie plate was good, the hummus, ghanoush and falafel were very average. I think the veggie plate at Hummus Cafe one block south is much better. For my palate, Hummus Cafe some of the best falafel around and the baba is great. Give them a try. I have two problems. They gave us bottles of Kirkland water. No glasses of water. I really hate putting more plastic in the world. The faucet water in Greenwood is fine, I have been drinking it for 30 years. Worst problem. I went to pay and the server and cook had some words about entering my order. Once entered, the server zipped past the tip screen, it defaulted to 18%. If he had let me, I would have tipped them 20%. Maybe that is their standard, I may have missed that on the menu. When leaving, my wife looked at the server, thanked him and wished him a good evening. He kind of glared at her and went back to looking at his phone. I doubt we will be back. read more
