When we arrived, I asked if we could sit outside, and the owner had no problem with that. While we were enjoying our meal, one of my friends mentioned that the edamame needed a little more salt. Seeing the owner outside, I politely asked if we could have some salt. To my shock, he suddenly started yelling at me and told me that I was being rude. At first, I thought he was joking, so I responded, "Can you imagine how rude I am to my husband?" His response was completely inappropriate and offensive. He said that if he were my husband, he would slap me on my behind over and over again in a sensual manner and that I would enjoy every moment of it. My friends and I were absolutely stunned. When I asked him to stop and bring us the check, he then said that "you Jews always give me problems." A few minutes later, after I told the waitstaff that I intended to share my experience on GN Mommies, he came over with hot sake to apologize. He even offered to refund our meal, but I declined. I don't want anything from someone who makes hateful remarks about Jews. After living in Great Neck for 40 years, I have never experienced anything like this. As a Jewish resident, I was deeply offended by both the inappropriate sexual comments and the anti-Semitic remark. I will never set foot in this restaurant again.

However, this will be my absolute last time at Kotobuki in Roslyn, as someone who's been countless times. We came hungry and ordered relatively quickly. We waited at least 30 minutes for our Kani salad which was surprising, since it's in most of their dishes. Unfortunately, it was inedible. The only thing I can compare it to texture-wise is the crinkle paper they put in gift bags. We sent it back and had to wait again to get a menu and reorder. We were surprised there was not a care from the waiters to make it right. They also mentioned that everyone had been complaining about the Kani and did nothing about it. Our sushi took an hour to come out, and my friend rolls were incorrect. She mentioned it to the waiter and got her food taken back to correct it. When she got her new, correct order from our waiter, not only was the order still wrong, the plate was super dirty and a hair was on her plate. At this point, with the lack of service, attention, and inedible food we called over the manager who apologized and offered to make the new rolls himself. He did it quick, and though it was a nice gesture, at this point we were so put off from the hair we couldn't finish our meals and were ready to leave. They comped the Kani salads (which we sent back) but to our surprise nothing else was taken care of. I wasn't expecting a $0 bill, but to pay over $50 for a pretty horrific meal and experience also rubbed me the wrong way. Do yourself a favor and support other Japanese restaurants that have the fish quality, affordability, and attention to customers that Kotobuki lacks with their new turnover in management.

We started with an espresso martini, which was excellent--smooth, well-balanced, and a great way to kick off the meal. My husband and I each took a few sips before I remembered to snap a photo--always a good sign. For appetizers, the wasabi rock shrimp and spicy tuna crispy rice were both standouts--fresh, flavorful, and nicely executed with great texture. We also ordered the 10 piece nigiri flight, which was consistently impressive. The fish tasted fresh across the board, with the uni being a highlight--rich, creamy, and exceptionally fresh. The shrimp tempura roll was delicious--crispy and well-balanced. The only dish that didn't quite land for us was the ebi hamachi futomaki. My wife and her sister were in the mood for Japanese food, and this is a place they have visited several times, so I tagged along. If you're familiar with this part of Northern Boulevard, you know how many restaurants there are and how annoying it can be to find parking. When you enter, several people greet you. The place is wide open and clean, with a small bar up front and the sushi station towards the back. The three of us opted for the Omakase, which includes 16 pieces. Overall, it was pretty good. Were there a few items I could have done without? Of course, especially since I'm not a seafood fan. Let's start with the things I did enjoy: Sapporo beer (haha), monkfish liver (surprisingly), sea bream, seared scallop, hamachi, salmon, tuna, and my dessert, the seared wagyu beef. My least favorite item was the sea snail--I must have been chewing that for at least five minutes. The other items I didn't mention were decent. Overall, it was a good meal. Why am I giving it a 4.25? It's pricey ($138 per person for the Omakase), so if you're coming here for that, be prepared to spend some money.
