Gayle and I were in town to visit her oldest Son, his Wife, and of course the darling grand girls…read more We take them out to dinner at least once during these times, with a popular choice being Sushi. Ami was chosen as a family favorite and a place close to campus, where the oldest daughter (now a Junior at IU) could show us around after the meal. Note: Ami could sure use a new exterior sign. Ami is mainly a Sushi restaurant, but has Korean accents, of which my Cupbap bowl (Chicken and Rice) was quite good. I'm completely clueless regarding Sushi nomenclature, but I did know that those choices (in generous quantity) were enjoyed by the other 5 folks at the table. I was the only one that ordered beer, of which my Upland Dragonfly IPA choice had just the right amount of bite and at only $5. We also had a nice roomy table by the window. Service was friendly and prompt, albeit a bit uninspired. It was a very good family outing.

The fish was all the cheapest types, including tilapia which is pretty awful in sushi. No nori, no tobiko, no ikura. Two pieces of hamachi. Not particularly fresh. The sushi selection #2 was a little better. There was one piece of squid that included some nori and was well prepared. Tiny decorative amounts of tobiko were present. Soy sauce included was all high salt content. $82.00 Not ordering from Ami again.

Good for casual Japanese dining. The restaurant is nicely designed (you can tell when you walk in…read moreit's a sushi restaurant) and I was seated in a cool semi-private booth. I thought the country music threw off the vibe a little. The staff were very polite. I would say the pace of service was leisurely but not nearly as slow as I had feared given some of the reviews. If anything, I had to wait a while to order after I was seated, but my food came out in a totally reasonable amount of time after that. I had the unaju and tempura ice cream. The salad that came with the meal was very basic, but the unaju was good. The eel was very flaky. The daikon tasted a little funny to me though. The presentation in the box was very nice. I really liked the tempura ice cream too. I've only had tempura ice cream once before, and this was a little different with a coating that was less crispy and more cakey. It was big, with two very generous scoops of ice cream. Good size for sharing. I felt like everything was worth the price and I would eat here again.

We think sushi bar is the best sushi in Bloomington and their prices are amazing. I bring my family from Chicago here every time they visit and it's always a hit. Excellent lunch menu as well. The sweet potato roll is one of my favorites for a crunchy roll.

Excellent Thai restaurant with high marks for food, service, and atmosphere…read more I've tried the Thai fish cakes, sweet and sour saute, pad bus sa ra com, mango sticky rice, and Thai iced tea and coffee. The savoury dishes were all super flavourful, cooked well, and generously portioned. Maybe this has something to do with the dishes I got, but I think the flavours here are generally more intense than the other Thai restaurants I've tried in Bloomington, and their spice levels might be a little higher. I've been somewhat underwhelmed by level 3 (out of 5) at other places, so I tried level 4 the first time I ordered here, and it was a little too hot, so I went back to level 3 the next time, and it was just right. The Thai tea and coffee were both very good, especially the coffee. It almost tasted chocolatey. The service is consistently on top of it. I was there on Valentine's Day, and they were slammed but had enough staff on the floor for it; the food was quick as usual and everyone was still very friendly. I also love the atmosphere here. The building is one of the converted houses on 4th St, and there are different dining rooms, some with lots of windows, all filled with interesting decor, and there's also a very nice patio during the warmer seasons. The only problem here is, unless there's a back entrance I don't know about, I don't think the building is wheelchair accessible; you have to go up a few stairs to get to the main entrance.

Got hibachi, we always get the chicken and steak, prices have gone up since we started coming here…read moreso for 2 adults with s&c, you're looking at around 75-100$. I got the shrimp tempura, and it was cold, and tasted like it was yesterdays. No crunch to the tempura whatsoever. i asked if they make it per order or one giant batch then use throught the day and the lady looked very confused. Ice cold shrimp, soggy breading, not a good mixture. Ive never had an issue with the tempura. Dinner was excellent of course. Recommend 10/10 Might want to skip sushi though. I dont recommend that. So I've read some of the reviews about how this place is really dark and dingy, when you first walk in lights are on you can see what you're doing you can see everybody there's a bar to your right and there's Booth seating for non hibachi. When you walk through the doors you're right at the desk to check in. If you look straight you can see the Hibachi room. This is a darker room so it can be more intimate. With the whole fire going on the grill, keeping it dim in the room gives it a "wow" factor and to set the mood/ambiance. Its not so dark you cant see, its just not as bright. If it's a bright room and you're having all of these fire tricks going on it's not a big wow factor. I've never had a metallic taste happen in this restaurant, nothing is wrapped in tinfoil, and I've been coming here since I moved here in 2010. Now you can sometimes get overcooked food here if the chef is overworked, but as long as you talk to them and tell them that it is overcooked they'll remake it for you. Or they'll take it off your check. Everyone here is easy going even on a super busy day. I've never had attitude from anybody. Also they don't use a bunch of sauce to Overcoat your food with flavor. A lot of other places will just load it up with teriyaki sauce and the other sauce that I can't think of the name of but the reason why they do that is because the food isn't fresh here the food is fresh. They use fresh ingredients. I've been to other Hibachi places where in their vegetables they add corn and green beans which ruins the whole flavor and then when they're cooking on the grill they add jarred garlic which is a whole different flavor that doesn't mix with the Hibachi experience. Everything is cut in front of you so if you don't think that your chicken is correctly colored you can see it and you can tell them. Again if you don't like something TALK TO THEM. They dont bite.
