I worked my way through seaweed salad, nigiri rolls, sashimi, chicken katsu, and even a few hand rolls because sometimes you want to feel a little fancy while you're stuffing yourself silly. I always love buffet or all you can eat restaurant be cause I love sample all kinds of food. This is an all you can eat but not buffet that customers pick up themselves. One thing we need to consider is their service is very slow. So it gives customer plenty of time to digest & keep ordering. I love their small items. I only eat a small portion each time. I don't eat raw stuff, so everything cooked are great. Just remember order only you can finish, otherwise, they will charge extra for left over. But customers can take with them once it's paid. The sign stating "no preferred seating requests" comes across as unnecessarily rude. I understand policies, but there should be room for basic consideration. I was recently diagnosed with cancer and wasn't feeling well--I had a severe headache and was exhausted. I brought my two daughters in, hoping to start their spring break on a positive note. I acknowledged the sign and politely asked if we could have a booth just this once due to having a headache . The restaurant wasn't extremely busy, and several booths were open. Our family usually eats here every time I visit Charlotte, NC. We tend to frequent the Matthews location. There is plenty of parking around the restaurant. The place is large and clean. There are tables and booths available. The staff was helpful and accommodating. Everything we ordered was delicious (from the apps to the sushi). They have a reasonably comprehensive menu that includes a variety of sushi, hibachi grill, and side dishes. You can order as much or as little as you want. We ordered a bit of everything! It took ~5 minutes to start getting the apps and ~10 minutes to receive the food. Overall, this is a great sushi option for larger parties. It is not gourmet, but it is delicious and plentiful. We had a good time at Mr. Tokyo! We had to wait about 20 minutes before we were seated due to a nice sized lunch crowed. Once seated the waiter explained to us how the process works. You can order has many or as little as your like. We ordered a few of the sushi options - all very good & the eel and yum yum sauce delish! The crab ragoons, spring rolls and shrimp hibachi were my favorites. The restaurant was pretty clean and they played a great selection of music. This will always be my favorite sushi place! Tip: if going for dinner beware of the BBQ SQUID. It is a whole squid served that takes a while to come out. Make sure you have plenty of people to share with and enough room in your belly. The menu includes a variety of sushi made into hand rolls or sashimi. We got there right at 4 pm, and we're sat down right away. This is an all you can eat sushi. It's a fixed price, and you can order sushi, appetizer, hibachi grill, and dessert as well. We have never had any "bad" sushi since we have started coming here. Every time, the sushi is always fresh and very tasteful. The servers are always polite and friendly and make excellent recommendations, and take the time to explain the process of you being new there. I will say to try to get there before the dinner rush. The only new thing I tried this visit was the sweet potato roll, which was quite unique and tastier than I expected. I wasn't very pleased with the service though. Our waitress was irritated by two members of our party asking if they could clarify some points on the menu, saying "didn't they [the rest of us at the table] explain it to you?". She also sent several things to our table that we never ordered (nobody ordered a sushi appetizer which are kept in a separate section of the menu and she said we did), and started making smart Alec remarks about it after a couple times "well you definitely wrote down two" (we were all using check marks or x's to indicate what we wanted). Maybe she was having a bad night, but don't take that out on customers. The host staff were very accommodating to our walk in group and got us seated within a reasonable amount of time though. I didn't personally go, but one of my friends said the bathroom was a disaster with trash all over the floor. There also was an annoying parking situation with very narrow passageways and diagonal spots. Service has been declining for the past few weeks. Today was my last straw. Lunchtime was a little busy which I can always be understanding of delays. However, our server did not get our drink order for the first 30 minutes of us sitting. She also came back with drinks and forgot one soda and after being reminded five different times she finally brought the soda. Our sushi was warm like it was sitting out before being delivered to our table. The warm nigiri was especially disturbing. on top of that, automatic gratuity was added on the table for three and we were not informed. The server continued to apologize throughout when we told her that she had nothing to apologize for - again, it was lunch time and we understand how busy it can get. The frustrating part is that she apologized continuously but still kept forgetting the soda and sriracha. Our food came out about 50 minutes after ordering. This isn't my first time there during lunch and this has never occurred. I should have known how it was going to go when we were greeted with a less than pleasing attitude. The really short Asian girl at the front hosting did not seem presentable and seem to have somewhat of an attitude. She barely spoke despite her job description being to speak to customers. She walked away with the menus and expected us to follow with out her saying a word. I think I need a break from this place, although I'm hopeful that things can improve. read more

This is my first time visiting the Matthews location. Normally my husband and I visit the one in Pineville. I brought my father here for a "FIRST TIME SUSHI EXPERIENCE". Let's be clear, my father is a meat and potatoes, deep-dish Chicago style pizza kind of guy. He's like most humans (non sushi lovers) who naturally assume all sushi contains "raw" fish (eye-roll). At first he stuck to the hibachi meals then he ordered three rolls: Deep Blue Roll, Garden Roll, and a Crazy Dragon Roll. To my surprise he LOVED everything. I am so proud of my Papa Bear. Oh, I almost forgot, he also used chopsticks for the first time like a pro! Needless to say this was a great experience for him and our waitress was amazing. As for my sushi experience, it was amazing as expected. I ordered the following rolls during my visit: Appa Roll, Juicy Crab, Deep Blue, Garden, Crazy Dragon and the spicy shrimp roll. Matthews location on US74 lunch review: If you have no experience with sushi, and no expectations, Mr. Tokyo provides a modern-Japanese style interior of dark upholstered booths in a not-too-loud setting with quick service. Lunch orders are via a very limited paper menu that diners check off with pencil stubs for choices. About a dozen custom rolls with a lot of Krab and tempura (fried) selections. Seven or eight Nigiri as well. Many of the custom rolls are made from minced fish, especially the spiced Tuna selections. Rolls have very thin rice layers. Two custom roll choices yielded six and eight pieces of Uramaki for about $14-15 total. Service is quick polite and attentive for drinks and refills. Orders took about 15 minutes to table. This is a very busy lunch location, and the price is very likely why. The experience is essentially "sushi buffet" without the buffet. Rolls are fresh but it appears owners stretch fish (mincing) to accommodate lower prices. Lunchtimes can be really busy from 11:30-1pm. Mr. Tokyo provides a quick lunch at low prices. If you are looking for better quality, try the nearby New Zealand Cafe or perhaps RuSans. read more

I would definitely recommend this establishment for a family meal. The more people the better as you are able to try more things. This is buffet style quality. The service was poor, regardless of writing your name on the menu, plates are just placed on the table for the patron to decide what is what or who ordered. We have a table of 6, 1/2 of the table didn't get refills until we asked (and everyone was drinking tea). Wait staff was all over the place but plentiful. Hibachi dishes are gross. Everything was just cheap ingredients with massive amounts of white rice being the bulk of rolls (to fill you up with the cheapest ingredients). Fried items were lukewarm warm (at best) with my dumplings being actually cold in the middle. Good place to go is you want volume and don't care about quality.
