Love the food here, the hibachi is great and definitely what I'm looking for in terms of large portions and taste. They can sub out rice for veggies too if you're on a diet. They do a great job with service and go the extra mile to make you feel welcome and strike up a conversation. Very good energy. Unfortunately I am a little disappointed. I heard a lot about this place because it's close to my job and my coworkers got it a couple times it always looks great and I even tried a roll and it was very nice. But when I came the first time my order seamed like it was made wrong.... I feel bad because I can tell they were short staffed and that the new cook was new but I ended up wasting $... It's good for take out only or pick up, it isn't inviting enough to dine in. I was truly excited with the bagel roll.... Salmon cream cheese deep fried... somehow they added sweet sauce to it and ruined it, the many clearly says only salmon and cream cheese... also it was basically rice there was barely any salmon nor cream cheese; even though it was incorrect I ate it all - that says something it was crispy but not greasy and the rice was good haha Now to the lunch special, great price but unfortunately and that might be how they make it but carrots completely sweet way too sweet not my palate as well as the whole plate the chicken the mushroom and the rice.. A series of wrong events. Not returning. The gal working at the counter was new (I get that) i don't get why she would be allowed to work with the public yet if she isnt ready. I asked for what is usually called a "philadelphia roll" tempura style, (Salmon cream cheese and avocado) they have a roll (with same ingredients) but could NOT make is tempura style for me? It's called the "Chris roll" here, the same ingredients but not tempura style... ok here's where it gets good .. Low and behold I see a roll called "bagel" (Salmon and cream cheese that is tempura style but contains no Avocado) Offered me that roll and add a buck or two for the avocado to add inside? You're kidding right? Why couldn't they just tempura fry the Chris roll for me? Attitude consisted of like "yawns" from all of the workers, unwelcoming vibe. This is an hour and a half before they were closing... I just happened to see Sushi Star (Huntersville) and walked in. While I was waiting on my food, I realized they had just opened up for business that day. I always came here when I lived in Matthews. Maybe twice to three times a month. Now we only go maybe once every other month just because we live an hour away. We've been regulars at the Huntersville Sushi Star for a while, and we had no idea this location existed! For us, the best thing about Sushi Star is the Buy One Get One roll days, so we were stoked when we found out that this location alternates those days with the Huntersville location. For those who are looking to get some bogo action: Huntersville does the special on Wednesday and Friday, and Matthews does it on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. If you've been to the other Sushi Star, this one won't surprise you, but that's a good thing. Their sushi is great, and the prices on bogo days are fantastic too. I wish this location had online ordering like the Huntersville location, but I suppose that will come with time . I finally decided to try this place. I skipped the sushi spot I like down the road for somewhere with less waiting time (I had hoped anyway). This restaurant had a big meal and I just wanted something good but not expensive. Not many people were dining in, just three patrons and everyone else was getting takeout. Was pleased after trying Sushi Star for the first time. They have a huge menu of sushi roll options...they literally have a huge 8 foot tall menu by the register! Right now they're running a special buy one roll get one free. We tried the Wolfpack roll (good spicy) and the Rolling Stone. Both were tasty! We also shared a chicken teriyaki dinner. Like any good Sushi restaurant, they had plenty of the coveted Yum Yum sauce. I thought prices were very affordable (especially with the buy one, get one). Let me first say I do not like sushi. My husband loves it though, and I do like hibachi so we tried Sushi Star. The first time we went, I liked my hibachi chicken and that this place is very convenient. Restaurants tend to turn over in this strip so I was glad to see a new one in the area. I want a few to stick around. My husband wasn't as crazy about his order (sushi). It looked like a hot mess & he commented that part of the appeal for him is that sushi is so visually appealing. They said it would be 15 minutes so I arrived, paid and waited and waited and waited. They apparently don't "take" the order until paid. I paid at 7:36 and didn't get my food until 8. Everyone waiting was so mad that I almost felt sorry for the people working there. There were 4 in line so it wasn't packed or anything. OH the food! I took a bite of zucchini - it looked great. It felt & sounded like it had been coated in sand. I've never experienced such a jarring sensation (because I don't eat sand). I tried to eat a few more bites but gave up & threw it away. Just tried Sushi Star for lunch. I ordered the spicy tuna roll and the Fall Season roll which had shrimp tempura, avocado, cream cheese, bacon and topped with shredded crab. I enjoyed the Fall Season roll. It was very spicy which I love and had a nice smoky bacon flavor to it. I was disappointed with the spicy tuna, which is always my favorite. They topped it with two types of sauces and one had a sweeter taste to it and I didn't like it. The interior of the restaurant is small but cute. There were a few people in there enjoying lunch, but to me, it seems more like a takeout place. Everyone was friendly and the wait for my order was pretty minimal. The attempt at wasabi was a neon shade of a color much closer to blue, than green, with no taste. it was really rough. the sushi was overpriced but the lunch special was a good value buy. While for the most part, the sushi is a massive bust at this restaurant, I must say that I am thoroughly impressed with one thing and one thing ONLY. The Hibachi Lunch Special. For less than $5 from opening to 2:30 pm, you can order Hibachi chicken with fried rice and sweet carrots. This meal is more than filling and genuinely a great deal. For its price, the meal is more than impressive and I can say I've returned several times now for this item. HOWEVER, everything else this restaurant has to offer just misses the mark. The sushi just isn't good. I heard from friends before I went that the sushi is subpar and after trying several rolls myself, I completely agree with that statement. Update. Well like a lot of restaurants, they start off strong and give a great product and then they start backing away from what they had. I feel that that's what is happening here. My two rolls today we're a total disappointment. I believe to keep them looking big they don't bother to really roll them. One I could pick up even with my fingers without it falling apart. The reason I gave four stars is because the teriyaki chicken lunch special tastes good yet the entire "to-go" tray was nearly all rice with maybe (with emphasis on 'maybe') seven little pieces of chicken in the corner - and perhaps a couple pieces of broccoli. I understand that the lunch menu is smaller portions. Got that. Not a problem. It's expected. But, perhaps instead of a pound and a half of rice, maybe a few more pieces of meat and broccoli would be great. In short, the food was delicious - but it's the teriyaki chicken we're wanting. The actual pieces of chicken were great though, and the seasoning / sauce makes it special. If nothing else, toss that teriyaki sauce over the bed of rice :) In the end, I'd return because the food was good, fast and still a value. I know most businesses are having it hard with implementing social distancing guidelines. However...If you can't run a business in the current times it's probably best to close for a bit until you've figured it out. There were social distancing rules displayed BUT not being enforced. They were over capacity as far as ppl being inside at the same time. Employees did not ask for anyone to leave; I waited outside. The staff had on gloves and masks but through all of the exchange I didn't see the gloves changed once, not even after handling cash.
