What a terrible surprise, my bourbon chicken was the worst bourbon chicken I've ever tasted. It had so many onions and green peppers, I had to take them out, to try to eat it. I have been going to this restaurant since it first opened and knew the first manager and the community, I have lived in for over 20 years. They moved to Fincher Farm, not that far from the first restaurant. That is the most racist old Asian lady, I've ever met in the front!!! She disrespected me and my son as if we were bothering her. No smile, no greeting and short answers to my questions. I ordered ahead of time to pick my food up. I walk in and she says yeah, what do you need. That was rude. I told her about my order and she said without looking, "there's no order for you, here. You must have the wrong store." I told her this was the only store I know. There were 3 different white people behind me and she gave the biggest smile and warmest greeting for each of them. "Hello ma'am! Hello sir! No ma'am, no sir!" She took her time with them and addressed them sir and ma'am throughout the conversations. I came in first but she was ready for and attentive to all of the white people who came in after me only one was pick up. They all got their food and they all were treated kind. "Here is your food ma'am/ sir. Have a nice day. A black man walked in and she said "yeah, you need something?" Wait, what happened to ma'am and sir? She told that black man to go over there and sit down until she was ready. My food finally came and I previously told her my name 3 times. She said, "Hey lady!" What? So I wasn't imagining it, she was being nasty and racist towards me. I got my food and told her I will never come back to that Red Bowl again. She said, "what, I didn't do anything!" Love this place! And if you go try to get Larry as your server! I have been to a few different Red Bowls in NC but this has to be my favorite so far. The most amazing thing is the 1/2 price sushi menu from 7:30-9:30 if you order a drink. I usually go with a soda but if you go with an alcoholic drink the prices are very good as well. Id like to say I'm a little bit of an asian officianado. I've been to Chinatown in NYC. Entering the store, you're greeted by a waving cat-sumo thing. This immediately feels insulting, as this cat does not help you in any way. I ordered a bento box with a red bowl roll, hibachi chicken, spring roll, and friend rice. I do not like spring rolls so I was disappointed with that. The other food was fine. I like to take dates here if I know that the relationship is going to end poorly, sort of a reflection of the restaurant i suppose. Service is fine, could be a little friendlier. Pork fried rice had dozens of strips of odd inedible tuff chewy pork fat that had to all be thrown out. Asked for an order of plain fried rice and got rice with tons of eggs in it....throw out. Beef teriyaki on a stick was peculiar cuts of beef that seemed to be steamed...tossed out. Teriyaki Chicken on a stick was okay but not great. Spent $48 and about threw it all out. I got the wonton soup and the lunch sesame chicken with a spring roll and added shrimp to the fried rice. I love their wonton soup but it is hit or miss with it because sometimes it is way too salty and this was one of those times. It was way too salty but the wontons were good and flavorful. ***Disclaimer*** I am writing the review amidst the Corona Virus Pandemic, so I cannot vouch for decor or amenities related to the dining in experience. With that in mind, this was literally the only open Asian food restaurant that we could find. The food is Vietnamese. My son, who placed our take-out order, said they workers were friendly. He ordered two spring rolls, one bourbon chicken, and one General Tso chicken. He ate the General Tso beforeI I could drive us back home, so I presume it was good. I managed to get a single piece of chicken with no sauce before he devoured it. He's a bit of a "bougie" college student when it comes to Asian cuisine. He enjoyed his food and was satisfied. I really enjoyed my bourbon chicken, and it was enough to share with my daughter and my husband. My son also snatched three pieces of that with his chopsticks as I was making my daughter's plate. He said it tasted more like orange chicken, which he eats a lot of. I didn't get that. I think the ginger is more prominent in this food than other Asian food I've eaten, but I've never had Vietnamese food prior to this. My son (of course) didn't notice the ginger. My only dissatisfaction was the small amount of vegetables on the bottom. I had maybe a tablespoon of veggies. Had I known, I would have had my son request more, or a side order. The rice was cooked properly and consistent throughout, so that made the meal enjoyable. I hope more people will visit after reading this, especially since my initial online search had this establishment marked as closed. Asian restaurants are always hit and miss-- overall and with individual dishes. We live close to Red Bowl so we figured we would give it a try. The Pad Thai was not great and the potstickers were good, but they were small and pricey. However, the sesame chicken and orange chicken were amazing and would highly recommend both.
