Pretty decent portions for their bento boxes. It comes in either salmon or chicken teriyaki. It comes with sushi 3 pcs, california roll 4 pcs, seaweed salad, assorted tempura and salad. I'm not too crazy about their sushi. They seem to rush it and whatever roll I order always falls apart. Drinks - Tea, soda, beer, and sake. Service - Not bad. The waitresses are friendly. I just don't like how the sushi chefs rush the sushi rolls. They look a little sloppy while making the rolls. It's good to be quick but at least get it right. I think I am scarred from such awesome places like Sushi Village and Sushi Palace. Knowing that I can get all I can eat sushi and sashimi for $22 compared to paying per piece kills me! I also don't know how to order accordingly to my hunger when it comes to this either. We came during lunch, and ordered spring rolls and a few pieces of tuna and rolls. The spring rolls were OK, they were small and barely had any vegetables in them. The rolls were good, and you can tell the fish is fresh. But the price in the end killed me for the minimal amount of food that we got. I was disappointed when I asked what came with the sashimi deluxe and when I found out it had a piece of fish which I was allergic to, I asked if I can substitute it for something else and they said no. Really? You cant keep a piece of shrimp and give me an extra piece of salmon? In the end, it was OK. I would rather try the other sushi places on bell, before I came back here. read more

When I was an undergrad and didn't have the dosh or the wherewithal to explore the culinary wonderland that is NYC, I came here for a slightly fancier-than-diner-food dinner with my friends. The food isn't spectacular, I mean, there is much better sushi to be had within driving distance, but the decor is cute, the service is prompt and they had plum wine. Plum wine was my first wine and I will always love it. Aw i love this place. I've been here 25+ times for sure. Okay, so I'm a sushi snob and honestly you don't really come here for toro or anything. You come here for the lunch deals, their rolls and great consistent service! The owners and staff are korean, and they're super sweet. I honestly think their rolls are as good as the famou Haru chain in Manhattan, just cheaper with more variety. Hot foods not so much.They have this one roll, the tropical roll (eel/spicy tuna topped with mango). I love the unagi here, it's always perfectly toasted. I took my parents to the place for lunch one day and and although we sat down before the lunch special was over, the waitress refused to give us the deal because we ordered 3 minutes after the time had passed. Mr. Wasabi is a cute little spot on Bell Blvd. in Bayside, NY. I used to come here a decent amount with friends and dates. The interior space is cramped but the decor is charming; at nighttime, the dim light reflecting off the colored tiles creates a subtle lagoon-like ambiance. The food, as stated by the previous reviewers, is just average. The fish doesn't adhere will to the rice, and there's a big dab of wasabi under the fish, supposedly used as an adhesive to the rice. Me no likey. One of their best menu items, in my opinion, is the Udon. Bayside has a large Korean population - so it's not shocking to know that Mr. Wasabi served Japanese food - but is made and owned by Koreans. That's world peace for you. Forget about those wars. Anyways we ordered carry out and followed the advice of many others and ordered the Volcano and Bayside rolls (and another but I can't remember which). One of those rolls was fantastic! I just wish I could remember which one. It had a bunch of crunch on top. Would I go back to sit and dine? Probably not. I pretty much only go to Ki Sushi in Brooklyn for high-end sushi (the perfect trifecta of price point. quality. taste) OR Sushi Time in Forest Hills, Queens during work hours for mid-end sushi that comports with the trifecta. Would I go back for takeout? Sure... when visiting my in-laws in Bayside, and when craving sushi. Bayside does not have a ton of sushi spots. 1 out of 2 sushi places I always eat at on bell! Well for Mr. Wasabi, I usually order take out, and one downside is that they don't deliver :( AND they're closed on Mondays! Sometimes, on Mondays I crave specific sushi rolls that Mr. Wasabi makes really well but I can't satisfy that craving. This place has never let me down! I usually get the chicken tempura roll (no avocado) and it's so so good. All other sushi places that I get chicken tempura roll is always meh, it's a huge roll, the chicken is always too fried and it's never appetizing. However, Mr. Wasabi's chicken tempura roll is small (like a regular california roll) and it's so much more tasty than any other one I've tried. I also always get the U.F.O roll which has deep fried salmon, kani, onion with avocado and masago (no avocado.) It also comes with two fried balls filled with kani and onions and not sure what else is in there but it is GOOD! This roll has a lot of flavors and I love that they give the two fried treats along with it! I also order the yaki udon, which has so much flavor! It's one of my favorite yaki udons ever. The service is always great, they're super nice and friendly. I cannot eat avocado so I always have to say "no avocado please." Other restaurants have messed up and given me avocado but I've ordered from Mr. Wasabi countless times and they haven't messed up once! read more

It was cold and I was craving an udon fast... I should've taken a picture of the roll they had the audacity to serve. I asked for a spicy salmon roll and inside was only a pathetic smear of fish. Pieces were TINY. When I showed the waitress, she rolled her eyes and asked "Well what do you want me to do?" ...... For the price, this place just isn't worth it. This is my favorite sushi restaurant. It's not all you can eat, but you can instantly tell the quality of the fish is better. The rolls don't have a lot of rice like the other places and the portion of sushi they put in is very generous. The basic rolls are pretty small and they give you 6 pieces so one basic $5-$8 roll won't fill you up. But a specialty roll is pretty big and they top it off with lots of different toppings. Two of my favorites are the super crunch and volcano. I've also tried the sushi special for two and as I said, the fish is fresh. You can even watch the chef prepare your dish or roll behind the glass counter where all the ingredients are stored for you to see. I've heard a lot of horror bathroom stories the day after eating sushi at a buffet, but it has never been a problem for me. Mr wasabi is a legit sushi restaurant and I wouldn't get my sushi elsewhere. Not to mention, at the end when they bring out the check, they give you these tiny fruit candies which are SOO good. I so love this place. I've been going here with my family for the last 3 or 4 years. My daughter Amanda came up with her own roll: Avocado roll with seaweed on the outside, covered with tobiko & eel sauce, cut into 8 pieces instead of 6 (for small mouths). Because it's difficult to explain all this to a new server, the manager (who doubles as a server) wrote the "recipe" on paper as the "Amanda Roll" and taped it behind the counter so everyone would easily know what we wanted in case she wasn't around. With consideration like that, good, attentive service, good portions of fresh fish, creative appetizers and rolls, and a nice atmosphere, how could this place NOT become a favorite? They're not one of the more expensive sushi places around, either. Still, there are times when it's packed, and others when it's quiet there. Well 15 years later I came back and it was still standing which means it has to be halfway decent in an area that routinely chews restaurants up and spits them out. The menu is fairly standard for your typical Japanese restaurant (sushi, assortment of noodles and cooked teriyaki based foods) and it seems like the lunch specials are a hit locally. You certainly get a lot for your money during lunch. I wasn't hungry so I opted for two small rolls but the family tried some other items to give me enough to base a review on. The spicy crunchy roll was decent and the salmon skin was good. The udon was in a well balanced broth and the yaki udon was pretty tasty. The space is a bit cramped but it's clean. Compared to the other available sushi stores in the area, this sushi store did not give much bang for the buck. The service was excellent except for the clear preferential treatment of other people who happened to a larger group of people and received free appetizers. We did not get any. The portions were extremely small. Two rolls that were extremely small were $12. The shoyo ramen was dismal as well compared to totto or ippudo. Regular egg, not marinated like at ippudo. Other sushi places in the area offer three rolls for $10' specials and even sushi family down on northern blvd offers free appetizers for all and even green tea or red been ice cream for dessert. Mr. Wasabi is my go-to sushi fix. I don't even bother with any other sushi establishments most of the time. We've been coming here since it first opened many years ago and the quality has been superb for every visit I can remember. Service is excellent; food comes out within minutes and is always fresh. The restaurant itself is small and quaint, but adequate. The food is all so tasty and flavorful. Rolls are bigger than at other sushi restaurants. I recommend tuna tartar and miso soup for appetizer, and basically every specialty roll. My favorites are the Crazy Shrimp, Volcano, and Red Bull. But, I've tried almost every roll on the menu and they are all delicious. If you want quality sushi in Bayside, come to Mr. Wasabi and don't even bother with Sushi Bell. read more

3 1/2 star. Dinner for two on a Tuesday night. It's a small place so it was decently packed on a weekday night. Service was attentive and friendly. I noticed a lot of takeout orders sitting on the cashiers table. We ordered sake, plum wine, beers and lots of food for two..so the waitress noticed our large order and comped us some edamame, which was a pleasant surprise as I noticed no one else got it. Tuna tataki Appetizer: 1 star ($8) pretty standard dish but executed poorly. The 5 slices of tuna was seared too much so instead of being 20% cooked, it was more like 60% cooked. Had some spicy sauce and masago on top. It was missing a key acidic element, the Ponzu sauce! the dish was dry. So I asked for some Ponzu on the side and poured it on. Did the trick! Little did I know, they would eventually charge me $1 for this Ponzu sauce! Thought that was very rude, #1 bc they didnt tell me that they were charging and #2 two ppl spent $113 before tip there...and you charge me for some ponzu sauce??? Deducted a STAR for this reason. I didnt fight it on the bill but wonder if I did, would they change it? Shrimp Bento Box: 4 stars. Seaweed salad, shrimp tempura, fried shumai, fried dumpling, fried potato pancake, 3 pieces sushi, 1/2 cali roll, shrimp teriyaki, soup and salad. Pretty good bento box! Sushi and Sashimi Combination: 4 stars. Sushi and Sashimi was fresh and pieces were decent. We asked for no red tuna..and sub with all white tuna instead. Not a problem. Perfect. Came here for lunch with a friend. I was pleasantly surprised! The food all around was quite good. The edamame were fresh and nicely salted. The Miso soup wasn't too salty and had a nice amount of scallion and tofu in in it.I ordered the sushi lunch special which came with 10 pieces of sushi and a tuna roll. The fish was soft, delicate and overall delicious. Noll, and the flavor was very good. The tuna roll was well prepared and was quite substantial.
