She was a dear friend as she was for all the locals The bar has def changed since her passing, its almost like all the original locals bounced. but the vibe from the old ms maes I fell in love with still lingers around. I do think the hockey table next to all the seating in the back is fairly ridiculous. Never have i been able to sit in the back with my girl because of the damn tacket from that table. This had to be one of my favorite spots on a night where the group I was with visited no less than 10-12 different bars during a crawl that lasted for many, many hours. I'm not even sure why I liked this place so much, maybe it was all the alcohol that had been consumed over the course of the night, or maybe it was just the really cool, classic, dive bar atmosphere that just can't be duplicated or recreated on purpose, it just sort of happens. I just want to "review" Miss Mae's simply to remember that particular brand of unity felt by Miss Mae's patrons every time we saw each other sucking down booze in the dim bar at 7AM for whatever reasons we were still there. I feel like Miss Mae's is my number one symbol of Hitting Rock Bottom. Miss Mae's is a great place to figure out why your life is headed in the wrong direction over mass quantities of heavy-handed dollar drinks. I don't know how this joint turns a profit with drinks as cheap as these. they must cut the cocktails with something cheaper than water. I don't know, river water? Anyway, we came here after a Saints game to try to catch Rob Ryan, who frequents this spot after games and one look in his eyes and you can tell why. He definitely looks like someone who has "taken it to the limit" a few times. Let's face it, the only reason he's here is because Bangkok doesn't have a football team and I wouldn't be surprised to find him passed out next to a filthy latrine in this or any other establishment in this fair city. We didn't happen to catch him that night but we ended up staying into the wee hours drinking and talking and people-watching and I have to say, we couldn't have asked for a better place to do it in. To sum it up: the drinks are cheap, the tables are sticky, the air smells like sex-panther and pall-malls, the bathroom is a Hepatitas-trap and the patrons look like they could "get you things." Unfortunately, if you're a lady, "roofied" is one of those things, so be careful. It gets kinda fratty, but other than that, it's pretty disgusting,which is to say, right up my fucking alley. read more

There are certain bars that I consider my 'Strictly Go-cup' bars. Ms. Mae's falls into this category and perhaps more than any other bar in the city. This is the perfect place to duck in, grab some cheap drinks, and get the heck out of Dodge. Don't get me wrong, there is some great people watching that can be had on any afternoon here, but there is really not much need to chill in the smoky dive unless the heavens opened up and prevented you from exploring the rest of Magazine Street. If you are a wise NOLA traveler, you should always keep a vessel to hold more than one drink at a time (so you never run out). Order two or three cheap doubles from Ms. Mae's, fill up your container, and continue your journey around town. You probably should find some food soon; remember it's a marathon and not a sprint. read more

This was my 4 a.m. spot of choice. When you're not ready to go home, head to Miss Mae's to see the oddest cross-section of humanity you'd care to find drinking on the bare concrete floor. One night I was in the midst of a conversation with a well-dressed gentleman when he informed me he was the neighborhood pimp. Another night I saw an 80-year old dancing with a group of frat boys just before the sun came up. Earlier in the evening, the crowd tends to be more college kids, but the later you go the odder it gets. I went to Miss Mae's on a Friday night and this run-of-the-mill dive bar was dead empty. The bouncer proceeded to check my ID and then insisted that the person in the photo was not me... It was in fact me. It wasn't even an out of state ID. And why some teenie bopper underage college student would be trying to get into this shitty bar is beyond me anyway. I asked for a manager and the bouncer became incredibly rude shouting at me and insisting that I leave. Finally another bouncer came over and let my group in. Miss Mae's is a basic place with a mediocre selection of beer and an even more mediocre atmosphere. Don't waste your time. read more

EEEWWWW! I used to go here when it was a fun dive bar. For years, Mae's was my "go to" for cheap drinks and Mardi Gras Madness, any time of the year, any time of day!! Now, I feel it got really yukky, and it seems Ms Mae doesn't come around to keep an eye on things. Used to be a friendly dive bar, now, its unpleasant, unfriendly, and UNFUN! I've been to this bar on all occasion: celebrating the end of a semester, dates, Mardi Gras. The only thing I would criticize about this place is how they charge for tap water. i love this place. it's a neighborhood bar in the afternoon and that's when i've been stopping in. my first visit was the day after i'd seen new orleans since september 1, 2005. figure out that date and know i left heartbroken. i wanted a place to grab a cheap beer, not the overpriced stuff in the quarter (due to extra city taxes on those establishments), and open my laptop to get a little work done while i smoked (yes! you can smoke in bars in new orleans! fuck you, hippies!) my pipe. i snagged a seat at the end of the bar, asked the bartender if i could plug in next to the coffee machine. he greeted me with a pleasant, "sure, let me give you a hand." the bartender was brian. i asked for one of his "finest, cheapest beers," and he gave me a few options. i chose a miller in a bottle at a buck fifty and went to work. when he got off, he stopped by and we talked for a bit. i mentioned their internet juke and he told me how he and another employee had set up the standard songs. i found a ton of dead kennedy's for 50 cents a play. he bought me a beer, even. that's what i get for tipping a buck on every miller for the previous two hours. even so, his warmth was genuine and it was appreciated. when i came back two weeks later, he remembered me, we had a few laughs, and it's beginning to feel like home. the other bartenders aren't as congenial, but they don't piss me off and are always helpful and attentive. ms. mae's is one of my favorite hiding spots in nola. read more

EVERYTHING in this bar is $1 supposedly, and it's not crappy alcohol either, but I think it's all cash? that's why it's getting stars. Everyone is young here, under 30. I'm taking stars off cause Ms. Mae was a huge F%kng B*%#h. I was at this bar on Mardi Gras weekend and was sick so I was happy with sipping on my cup of water all day. So we walk in, been there for about 2 hours, when I decide to ask the bouncer if there is a gas station near by. Ms. Mae starts yelling at me that I need to throw my cup out. I tell her I didn't just walk in and that I've been in there for hours. She keeps yelling that it's not their cup, then she grabs my cup, crushes it, pushes me on my chest and the bouncer kicks me out, which the old hag did hurt me. I ask of I can get my BF and they say "sorry darlin". I'm thinking so I'm the only sober person in this $hitty a$s bar of yours and you are KICKING me out? I wanted to find Ms. Mae and call her a C U Nest Tuesday, but she left. Moral of the story, if you are broke, under 30, this is perfect for you. read more

I arrived with a group of 15 women and were yelled at before we entered the establishment because we had not booked (at the large, spacious, EMPTY bar) at 11pm on a Thursday night. The bartenders are always polite, quick and efficient: It's a dive, yes, and they take cash only, yes, but even when the bar is extremely busy, you'll get fast, friendly service. Sometimes, this place is filled with douchebags who don't tip and act like...well, douchebags...but the awesome staff here never take it out on you, like they do at other places nearby- they're very professional, no matter the circumstances. Fantastic dive bar with amazingly cheap prices. Seriously, this is probably one of the cheapest places to drink in the city. No special atmosphere, but friendly and bustling. This is my neighborhood bar. Always open. Always cheap. Great people watching from either corner of their outside seating. Definitely a dive, but sincerely a great one. An unbelievable treasure for the dive bar aficionado!!!! I seriously thought I was hallucinating when I walked in the door of this place (especially given the fact that it's not on Google maps or Yelp). First off, it's a 24 hour bar and it's located far away from the French Quarter. You can smoke inside, there's an internet jukebox with just about every song on it, and pool tables but perhaps the best thing are the prices. Even for NOLA this place is beyond cheap! When you first walk in you notice a huge white sign hanging over the bar that details all the liquors they have and all the prices. I was really f*&#ked up when I rolled in here at 4 am from Snake & Jake's but I remember Absolut being $2, Crown Royal being $3, and Jameson being $3. Yes, you heard me right! They have a large selection of bottled beers and those are all between $1.50 and $2 a bottle, too. I wanted to stay for a few more hours but the local girl that brought me here was wasted and was passing out on the stoop out front so I had to get her out of there, which brings me to the only negative point: getting a cab back from this place! I don't know if it was a fluke but the bartender called United Cab twice, I called them twice 30 and 45 mins later and then starting calling other cab companies to no avail. Finally, one showed up over an hour later. So, you might want to take that into account if you head out here cause it's definitely a trek from the French Quarter, if you're staying around there. Not like you'll really wanna go back, though, once you get into this place! The crowd is a mix of indie rockers and locals of all different subcultural affiliations, and as I was trying to keep my friend's drunken face from hitting the sidewalk out front at 5 am I saw a guy ride up on a bicycle, stop in for a drink and proclaim that he needed a nice, stiff drink to start his day off at work....classic! read more

Dollar drinks my ass. Upon ordering three drinks, specifically from the dollar drink menu, we were told to pay $16. When we asked why the price was so high, the bug-eyed bartender began to SCREAM as loudly as he could at us, accusing us of trying to get free drinks, and telling us if we didn't pay up the price was going to get higher. I have no idea wtf was wrong with this guy, but this bar is a s***whole and I will never step foot in there again. And I love dive bars. read more
