Our family are regulars here. Love the food, staff, ambience. Lots of Evanston office workers and NU folks at lunch time for the well priced buffet. We love it for dinner too. The Nepali dumplings "momos" are amazing. We could eat them by the dozen! read more

I've only been to Mt. Everest for the lunch buffet, which is more than amazing. At $10.95 on weekdays and $11.95 on weekends, the lunch buffet is a pretty good deal considering you get to stuff your face with as much Indian and Nepalese food as you want. To be honest, everything I've tried here during the lunch buffet has been delicious, although my absolute favorite is the chicken makhani (which I always make sure to get an entire separate plate of). Mt. Everest offers a very wide variety of food, including chicken tandoori, papadum, and if you're lucky, goat biryani! Once you return to your table with a heaping plate of curry and basmati rice, there will be a piping hot basket of garlic naan waiting for you. I'm getting extremely hungry writing this review, so I'll wrap it up - if you're a fan of Indian and/or Nepalese cuisine, the lunch buffet here will not disappoint you. I have yet to come here for dinner, but I imagine it will be just as good! read more

5-stars for their lunch buffet! $10.95 on weekdays and $11.95 on weekends. Basically, what this means should mean to you is - unlimited chicken tandoori. I mean, that's all we need in life right? They have a salad bar, deep fried vegetables, rice, around 8 seasonal dishes, and 2 desserts to choose from. Also, includes naan on the table. Very good deal! Service is always on point. Water refills had never been a problem for me here given the small cups for water and the amount of sodium I'm getting the buffet. read more

My main man and I ate here on a cold, wintery, Saturday night and it was just what we needed to nourish up after a long day of traveling, shopping, and shivering. The wait was minimal and the place was a great little romantic surprise. They have a fabulous alcohol selection and their naan is to die for. My Bf and I got a number of dishes, all of which were AMAZING and enormous. One meal + an appetizer is enough to generously feed 3 people. The service was great and all the staff were very attractive. The bathroom is a pain to get to... through the restaurant, back towards the front door, through the foyer, down the stairs, through the private party room (awkward), around the corner, then into the bathroom. They do have an elevator but I think it's only for the handicapped and servers of the private party and I didn't want to appear to be as lazy as I really am. This place was such a great find and great for dates, girls night out, a family meal, groups, you name it. Just try it, I promise you won't be disappointed. How did I forget to write a review for my FAVORITE Indian restaurant in Illinois? My husband and I LOVE Indian food....and Mount Everest is an amazing place to get it. We first went with a restaurant DOT com coupon, and just kept going back. It's in an ADORABLE neighborhood....we love Evanston. The service there is great, the servers are polite and attentive. We've never had any dish there that was just meh....everything is delicious and flavorful. We usually start out with samosas or pakoras, and they are always outstanding. I've had the vegetable jalfrajee and it's the best I've had ANYWHERE...and we lived in little India (by Devon) in Chicago. Adam has had all of the paneer dishes, the malai kofta (his favorite) and the chana masala...and has always raved about every one of them from Mt. Everest. The chicken tikka masala is scrumptious, as are the chicken jalfrajee, and the boti kebab. We always order a side of the naan or the paratha, and both are so amazing and tasty....I definitely recommend. Don't miss their desserts...the gulab jamun (lovely, light, sweet, little fried balls of dough in a light syrup) and the kulfi (an Indian ice cream). Plus the neighborhood is fabulous, so you can walk off dinner! I definitely recommend Mt. Everest!!!! read more

Creditable lunch buffet: clearly an asset to the Evanston university and business communities, as evidenced by the crowds that pack in here during the noon to 1:30pm time frame. For some reason it took me umpteen years to try the lunch buffet even though I've enjoyed dinner twice before. But if I worked in Evanston this would definitely be in heavy rotation. The selection of dishes is rather small, but when everything is tasty, I don't mind the lack of variety so much. Vegetarians are well served here; in fact, I counted only four meat dishes, three chicken and one goat. I really did enjoy everything, but my favorite was the chicken makhani. I have visited the restaurant a couple of times so a review is due. The restaurant serves both Indian and Nepali cuisine. I have visited both times with a big group of friends and have been really grateful that we made reservations for dinner. This place can be especially busy during the weekend and they do a good job saving table for reservations. What's good? Food Food is pretty solid here. The momo's (Nepali version of dumplings) are just delicious. I also like the papadam they serve with chutney before meal arrives. We shared vegetable biriyani, baigan bartha, navaratan korma and malai kofta as entrees with naan and rice. Vegetable biryani was delicious and curries were rich and delectable. What's not so good? Service The service can be a bit slow. Once we finished our meal and asked for boxes, it took the server 20 mins to give us the bill and another 20 mins (When a fellow diner waved!) to take our cards. We were there on a busy night but it's a just too long to wait. Last but not the least is price. I personally feel that this is more on the expensive side compared to other Indian restaurants in the neighboring towns. I would not complain so much if the service was top notch but unfortunately it isn't. Bottom line - it's worth going for the food but consider making reservations before to avoid the wait. read more

I really liked the food here, but I was turned off by the staff. Maybe its just assumed that anyone who comes in during lunchtime is here for their lunch buffet. We, however, were not. We received no menus and had to use the take-out menus to order from. We were ignored by the waiter until he realized that we had not gotten up and attacked the buffet. And silly me thought when asked "rice or bread?" that a) it came with the entree and b) we were to choose one or the other because only two choices were presented. Yeah, well.. I was wrong. I'm a little irked too that several types of rice were available and the waiter did not point that out and went beyond a basic side of basmati. Whatever though, it was tasty. Their bathrooms would be much, much nicer if they came equipped with toilet paper. Maybe its worth it to come here for the Nepalese food, but if I want Indian food, I can get better food with better service for less money on Devon. read more

This is one of my favorite places in Evanston and one of the best valued. I came here for lunch buffet ($10.95 per person!!) and they have so many options! They have lamb curry, chicken curry, spinach mixed with cubed cheese thingy, naan, chicken tandoori, and so many more I don't remember! Two weeks ago, I walked in the front door of this restaurant. I was hungry, and excited to have a Indian lunch buffet which I haven't had in so long. The restaurant is pretty reasonably sized, and more importantly very clean. After being seated, we got up and grabbed food. They had pretty classic options including some Indian lamb curry as well as a delicious Tandoori chicken. However, one of my friends was a vegetarian and noticed there was a lack-luster variety of options friendly to her. I haven't been to many Indian lunch buffet places, but I had to agree based on what I've seen previously. Overall, none of the options really surprised me, but it got the job done. The service was a little bit weird though. We didn't get naan until we asked, which I've never had happen to me before. I'm used to asking for refills, but I just assumed naan and Indian related dishes was a given. Furthermore, there was a mix-up with our checks that charged us all more than what we expected. The little things added up, and for a meal that was ultimately priced around 17 dollars, it didn't feel very worthwhile. Given the lack of Indian options near Evanston, Mt. Everest got the job done, however, maybe I went on a bad day. Regardless, the restaurant certainly did not deliver too well during my time there. read more

We've ordered from Mt. Everest a few times now, so a review is due, right? I love just about any Indian food, so even before our first order, I knew I'd be a fan. :) And we've ordered several times since. The food isn't amazing/excellent/out of this world (personally, I think a lot of the dishes need more spice), especially compared to our favorite Indian place back home, but it is pretty darn good. Downsides are that dinner can get a little pricey and delivery times can take up to an hour and a half, so you have to plan ahead! read more

I was really disappointed by my Everest experience. I'd heard great reviews from friends about the food so my fiancee and a couple of our friends ventured to it for the lunch buffet. The buffet was weak and every item lacked flavor. It was as if they had catered in food from an airline - that's how bad it was! Even the items in the buffet we were excited about (goat stew) were pretty flavorless and it was really more bone than anything else. Couple that with an unfortunate bout of food poisoning the five of us experienced the following few days and this was not a very pleasant experience. The only reason why I am not giving this a worse review is because, reading some of the other reviews, they're really much better as a sit-down restaurant than for the buffet. Mt. Everest doesn't disappoint. For the variety you get for the price, I'd prefer the lunch buffet. There are not only more than 7 vegetarian-friendly dishes from the buffet, but you get refills of naan, unlike during dinner time. Also, if you come here to celebrate your birthday, you get a free treat along with a $10 birthday certificate from Mt. Everest's staff! I'm definitely a loyal fan. Two words: lunch buffet. As a starving undergrad at NU, I sometimes used to not eat for a couple of days, save up some money, then come in to Mount Everest for the lunch buffet after the second or third day, when my appetite would proceed to wreak destruction like Shiva himself. In hindsight, a part of me can't believe I did such a thing to my body; another part of me wants to do it again. The food is that delicious. The freshness of ingredients used in the cooking is pleasantly apparent, which I've found to be fairly uncommon amongst South Asian restaurants in the US. Don't let the buffet option fool you: Mt. Only been here for the lunch/brunch buffet which I really love. The selection may look a bit skimpy but it's quite varied and very good There's excellent chicken and goat/lamb "stews" for meat eaters as well Tandoori chicken. Good rice, breads and several vegetable stews as well as a salad bar. At lunch (during buffet hours) the place is always busy and there may be a short wait for a table. I dined at Mount Everest Restaurant on a bustling Saturday evening. We were seated immediately upon arrival, and we appreciated that since the restaurant filled up nicely. They serve Nepalese and Indian cuisine, and I gravitated to the Nepali section because it seemed more exotic. My main course was a goat stew that was good though the plethora of bones made this dish a bit of a chore. This item comes with nothing, so we ordered a side order of white basmati rice. Now that I am not around a pot of rice every day, I truly appreciate how good a simple plate of rice can taste, and it tasted so good with the saucy goat meat. My friend ordered the appetizer platter as an entrée and everything looked good on it. The mango shake was also yummy. We were brought the wrong drink, had to ask for bread multiple times and never brought napkins. Just some basic necessities, I mean come on. Napkins and bread aren't that expensive. I had a splendid quick dinner here tonight! It made us all so happy and glowy and full of Nepalese/Indian tucker. We ordered various vegetable curries, of all different kinds, and each was distinct and made us all fall in love with CAULIFLOWER again. Oh cauliflower, i forgot about you! One of the best Indian restaurants I've been to since I came to Chicago! The smells and tastes are so rich, none of that watered-down bland stuff. I personally enjoy vegetarian dishes more and sometimes you can get skimped by that. These vegetarian dishes are very filling and eat like a true meal. I go back whenever I get a chance! Also, they have a lunch buffet every day. It's reasonably priced with a decent variety of entrees. Everest up in a white cloth napkin and carry it around in my purse for when I'm craving good Indian food, you best believe I would fill the world with aromatic spice scents wherever I went. Upon entering (which can only be done through a small random lobby) it looks like a "I'm probably under-dressed for this white tablecloth restaurant." Upon sitting down and relaxing, however, you're quickly sucked into the cozy/comfy atmosphere of this gem. The food is extremely enjoyable. Extremely. Enjoyable. We began with a Chef Special Assorted appetizer. It had a little of everything: vegetable pakura, tandoori, sesh kabab, chicken tikka, boti kabab, veg. samosa. Damn. Seriusly. The vegetable pakora are aaaammaaaaziinng. My entree was a dish which I've never seen on an Indian restaurant menu (one not made with a tomato based sauce). It was called "Chicken Shahi Korma" a mild dish made with a creamy sauce of almonds. Delish! Dee-lish. Even my expert Indian Food Eating friends loved it. The Naan is divine....just divine. And the tandoori is over-licking good! (OK, I'm being a bit dramatic. I mean, who's going to let me lick their over? Seriously. What am I even thinking?!?) All in all, try this place. Only been here for the lunch buffet, it's a very solid buffet for the price. Matter of fact, it's the only place I go for the buffet in the Evanston area. The restaurant is clean and spacious. The buffet generally consists of a salad bar, 3-4 veggie selections, 2-3 meat selections, 1-2 things of dessert. They have curry goat on buffet is one of my favorite. The items on the buffet don't change often which would be a good thing if you know exactly what you're craving. Naan is served separately to your table. Overall the food tastes great. If they had the buffet in the back and basically just serve me a plate as if it were ordered food, i'd still be ok. It can get crowded during lunch hours. I reeeeaaally like this place. We only make it here once or twice per year, usually before or after the one or two movies we see per year, but it's always been a really pleasant experience coupled with great food. I order a malai kofta whenever it's available, and last night was no exception. It was actually a little gummy, but my malai kofta has been gummy EVERYWHERE lately --I'm beginning to suspect it's some kind of supplier issue. But the sauce was excellent --deep and rich, with a mild spice. I could drink the stuff --I very nearly do. Pairs great with garlic nan. My fiance has tried a number of other dishes here, and has always been pleased. Great vegetarian options, and the food is consistently fresh and never one-dimensional. One note of caution: Might be worth double-checking the wine, if you order it. We ordered a bottle of Gewurtztraminer (a steal at $22) because it sounded perfect with the food. I ordered it, and the waiter asked to see the list to confirm. He said something like "Oh, the Chateau de (brand name)..." I said yes. When the wine came, I saw that it was white, and it was Chateau de (whatever) and didn't think twice about it. It was good, but it was in fact the Chateau de (Blahbuhteblah) Chardonnay, which not only didn't pair as well but was also $5 more for the bottle. My fault as much as his. If someone you know is afraid to try Indian food or don't like spicy foods, this is the place to take them. We pretty much had stuff from the Indian menu as opposed to the Nepalese menu but the dishes seemed similar. I don't know if its the Nepalese way to take the fire out of the food or this place just knows it is located in white people Mecca and know that they need to tone it down for the suburbanites. That being said, there were a decent portion of Indian people eating in the restaurant. Note: they do not have hard alcohol/spirits. So if you order a Gin and Soda for instance you will probably just end up with a club soda.And when you ask for a lime, you will for some reason get a lemon...There may be some language barriers or perhaps just a hard of hearing waiter. Anyway, the food was all good, everything looked good, it just wasn't quite as spicy as I like it. For instance, the Murgh Makhani was just called Chicken Makhani and wasn't as red as Murgh Makhani. Don't know if those are 2 different dishes and the Chicken Makhani wouldn't have been been as red or spicy in any restaurant but the girlfriends dish was on the mild side too...It didn't have chicken, as opposed to the chicken dishes (inside joke). read more

My sister had a groupon for this place. She's actually been here before and liked it, so she knew she had to buy the groupon when she saw the deal. We happened to go on a Thursday evening for dinner...and Thursday nights are ladies night here. So we each got a free drink (includes wine and beer too). We ordered the non-vegetarian value meal for two as well as chicken makhani. It was far too much food for us, but then we had plent of leftovers for the next day! I really enjoyed the mutter paneer and lamb curry that came with the value meal. I've always liked paneer. And the lamb in the curry was so tender. The peas pulao was also delicious. I'm usually not a huge fan of rice but I could eat this rice by itself! It took a little while for our server to come take our orders, but after that the food came out rather quickly and she came back to check on us a few times to make sure we were still doing good. read more

I am a big fan of ethnic cuisines as it give me the opportunity to try something different for a change. Indian food is of particular interest to me as it is very flavorful, full of tasty spices, and is always new and interesting. I went to Mount Everest with a friend sometime back and really enjoyed it, but there are some particulars to understand. Like some other Asian Cuisines (I'm looking at you, China, Korea, and Vietnam), Indian food is best eaten in sizable groups. Dishes, while tasty, tend to be large portions of one dish which can get boring own, but is great if you have enough people with you that you can all get something different and share. So if you can, go with a group and have everyone order something different and just enjoy a bit of each. Mt. Everest tries to cope with this issue by offering a meal for two, of sorts. It is a number of different offerings, rice dishes, meats, sauces, etc, all in slightly smaller portions, offered up at the center of the table and costing a touch under $20 a person. If you are going as a pair, I HIGHLY recommend taking this route. It is worth the extra cash (if you skip a drink and just have water, you're basically paying the same as you would for a regular entree) to enjoy the many flavors, and all of them are good. Don't feel like this is a romantic couples thing either, I went with a guy friend and this was just a good way to enjoy a hearty meal. The decor is warm, with soft lighting, wood tables and chairs, and trinkets and other items hinting at the Indian/Mongolian theme of the eatery. The service was prompt and friendly and the food was brought out at the right pace to allow us to eat at a nice pace without being overwhelmed with dishes or being unable to eat other plates before they got cold. Overall, if you are looking for pretty good Indian/central Asian cuisine in Evanston, check this place out. And if you can, go with a group. read more

Gotta be honest here, I would not have expected an Indian restaurant in Evanston to be this good. Devon is so close, who comes to Evanston for Indian food? Well, for starters, you should. Because this place is legit and delicious. We came for dinner and got 2 entrees (chicken saag and chicken tikka masala), rice and naan and easily have enough food for another large meal or 2 lunches. And the food was good! Very well seasoned and perfectly tender chicken. The naan was especially good. And it was a good amount of food for the money. Service was excellent (though it was a little confusing because I'm pretty sure we were helped by at least 5 different servers) and the water was refilled frequently, which was much appreciated. A couple of years ago I came here for the lunch buffet and also have very fond memories of that experience as well. If it wasn't highway robbery on weekends (more than 2x as much as on weekdays), I'd be here very frequently. read more

One of my favorite spots in Evanston. They offer a 10% Northwestern student discount and they have great service every time I go. The portions are huge and I find that a single entree order is either perfect for two people or split between two meals. I've gotten the lamb vindaloo (succulent pieces of lamb in a very spicy broth), chicken biryani (savory fried rice), and chicken tikka masala (tomato based sauce) so far. All have been really delicious and each time, I've always accompanied my meal with the garlic naan. You can actually see and taste the pieces of roasted garlic on the naan, making it really flavorful and garlicky - yum. Really great place for dinner with friends or just ordering takeout. i ordered mutter paneer. it consisted of a few pieces of cheese, a few peas, and mostly sauce, which was absolutely tasteless. (Way overpriced - $19 for a lot of nothing. ) I've ordered this dish in a number of Indian restaurants and this was the most disappointing. I had an appetizer - samosas - which came stale, not crisp, like they'd been sitting around for hours - and asked them to take them back. I want to share with you my latest discovery of a delicious vegetarian dish at Mount Everest, the Baigan Bharata, fresh eggplant roasted in tandoor mashed and blended in a rich mixture with herbs and spices Amazing favors. The Baigan Bharata goes very well with Paneer Kulcha, light leavened breads stuffed with chopped cottage cheese. Oh and don't forget the masala tea. It is amazing here. Well done Mount Everest. Would not recommend. We eat a lot of Indian food and this place was sub-par. We ordered three different dishes and none of us liked our food. The Palak Paneer was overcooked and tasteless. Chicken Jalfrezi was an odd color and looked more like Chicken Tikka. We all felt that our dishes were tasteless when they should have been savory. The ambiance was fine, and the dumpling appetizer was tasty. But it all went downhill from there, unfortunately. read more
