Food is simple. Tasted homemade just doesn't look pretty. I had the barley beef soup with veggies. Tasted ok. Very tiny barley and kind of greasy. I ordered the sirloin tips with pasta. Pretty good. Rich tasting. The only problem was they for the sirloin tips. All it had was mushrooms and noodles. And instead of a roll like it said I got a slice of white bread. They corrected the dish and the sirloin was a little tough but still tasty. Husband had the elk burger and a cup of chili. The chili was very good. The elk burger was very small but tasted good. I stopped in on 8/12 for a quick breakfast. While my previous visits here have been average there are not many options in town and The Ranch House down the road is closed. After being seated right away at my choice of dirty tables a young lady came right away to clean the table. After sitting for 10 minutes with no acknowledgement from any server or employee & considering the couple at the booth across from me, who were there before me,appeared to be searching for someone to take their order, I left. During my 10 minutes there I watched one female server bring out a plate at a time to one booth all while carrying on a loud personal conversation with someone in the back. We had high hopes for this place that claims to have the "Best Burgers in Town". Save yourself the trouble and just hit the McDonalds right here and keep moving through. It took 1hr40mins to from being seated to check (for a table of 4). Burger was definitely NOT anything to write home about even though the waitress claimed it to be her FAVORITE. Visited twice. Once for ice cream and the girl working the counter was rude as heck until the owner/manager came over. Icecream was good tho Had lunch today and service was so inefficient and slow it was maddening and I saw quite a few people upset about the slow service. I think it just needs to be way more streamlined and efficient than it is. Definitely better options like pizza (good but pricey) and the Chinese place across the street. Yup thats super yummy chinese in a merrygoround restaurant. No one of the 5 of us would go back. Sorry. We walked in and got ignored by the lady who claims is from Orange County and is "Boujee" or whatever but NOT. We stood there for 10 mins waiting for someone to sit us down, we had to ask if it was self sitting and she rudely replied go ahead sit. And after we sat a same ethnicity folk walked in and got sat rat away with menu in hand. This place gives off discriminative vibes. It wasn't for the great server we had and ok food we would walked out. Don't recommend this place but like I said the server great and nice bless his little heart :) on the other hand I really recommend coming to totem cafe across the street lovely place and GREAT FOOD! Service is horrible. Food is worse. What's worse than horrible ? Our burgers were beyond cooked. Burnt and dry and inedible. Like jerky. Our server never came to us to see if our food was ok. After 20 min of waiting to send our food back when she came to our table she asked if we were ready to pay. McDonald's? Burger King? Jack in the box? I'd say I'd rather eat there. Which would never happen. But I can't say it's all that bad. The lemons were good in the water. The pictures on the walls brought back many memories. The hippie stoner busser with sun glasses made us laugh. Oh and all the other people working there showed no signs of stopping and seeing if we were ok. Felt like they just didn't want to be there. We had a really good experience here and enjoyed our meals. We ordered meatball soup, beer battered onion rings, and a blue cheese burger with bacon added. The soup was very tasty. (And if I could spell abondegos, I wouldn't call it meatball soup.) The clear broth was rich with herbs and vegetables and meatballs. The onion rings were crispy, hot, and beer battered just like we like them. The burger was very good too with a nice soft bun. To top it off, our servers were really nice and friendly. First was Christy (?) and then Cecily as shift changed. It's such a pleasure to see people that are so friendly and really seem to enjoy where they work. I recommend this place. read more

Burger with a side of berating comments. I never did get to try the burger so it might actually be "the best in town" as promised. I don't care how good the food is, I shouldn't have to listen to snarky comments between my waiter and the kitchen staff. I ordered the burger, onions rings, and a Diet Coke. The waiter thought I had gotten up with my boyfriend to look at the many photos lining the walls and took that opportunity to berate my eating habits- which aren't any of his business. I told my boyfriend about overhearing all this; and he asked for the manager. We were told there wasn't one, like that's believable. Though the add-on avocado was fresh and firm. Salad was limp and the dressing watery. The beer selection is pretty good though, with several selections from the Indian Wells Brewing Company down the road. I am not likely to come back. read more

Best burger in town? If you take into account that the only other burger in this small one stoplight town is McDonald's, then sure, they can claim to be the "best" burger. However, you don't get to choose the temperature of your precooked frozen patty, and they're pretty stingy with the toppings. The food is probably actually closer to 2 stars, but the people are nice and the selection in this town is very limited, so they get a handicap star to bring the total to 3. read more

Mt. Whitney is an okay choice in the area considering that your options are limited. That being said, the service leaves a lot to be desired. We waited for 30 minutes for food. We stopped by here on our way back from Mammoth to LA. Ordered pozole, grilled cheese, cheeseburger combo. Food is average. Little bit pricey but probably bc it's tourist area. Pozole is a little bit bland. They gave you a lot of meat and hominy in the soup. I had to ask for lime and added to it to make it more flavorful. Cheeseburger combo comes with fries and beer for only $9.99. Pretty good deal. Service is not bad considered literally one girl at the front. After summiting Mt. Whitney the previous day, my crew was ready for a quick, HUGE breakfast before getting back on the road. The Alabama Hills Cafe was too busy, so we went next door to the Mt. Whitney Restaurant. First thing you see when you walk in is walls covered in John Wayne framed photos (and one photo of Clint Eastwood, in whihc he kinda looks like Hugh Jackman). This diner has a lot of options on the menu, but most of them seem pretty basic. One thing that stood out to me was the Mt. Whitney omelet. It came with biscuits and gravy and was a pretty good deal for the price (large portion). There were a couple things that led to a worse experience: 1. The service was a little slow and the waitress never really acknowledged that see got my order. I didn't know my food was on the way until it got there lol. 2. The gravy, along with the omelet didn't have much flavor. I had to add a lot of pepper to get some kinda kick from it. Other then those two things this is a solid brunch place that will fill you up! I ordered a cup of chili and a water. 42 minutes later I was served half a can of cold chili and truly the worst coffee I've ever tasted. The booth behind me got my water. A solid piece of Americana. It's got a diner-esqu, hunter lodge type of feel to the restaurant, which lends to some interesting menu options. I came in for an early breakfast, and have to say that the food was spot on, with a decent cup coffee to boot. The Denver omelette (with sausage) was massive and not overly greasy. Service was a little slow to get seated and order, but actually seemed to get better (more attentive) as the place filled up with more patrons. If I'm back in Lone Pine for lunch or dinner, I'm gonna have to try one their burgers. And I'm not talking about one your standard beef chuck patties. Perhaps some venison, elk, buffalo, or ostrich. Very cute little diner set in the charming Mayberry like town of Lone Pine. It is so old school, worn carpets, vinyl booths, Formica tables, etc. The walls are decorated with lots of old Hollywood Western movie photos ( heavy on the Duke). There is a western film museum in town also, so I am gonna assume that there were a boatload of western movies filmed here in Lone Pine. The service at this little gem of a coffee shop is awesome, and the club sandwich and onion rings that the hubster and I shared was top notch. I was expecting the worst after reading some really terrible reviews, but our meal was just fine! It wasn't extraordinary, but it wasn't the nightmare some have had. Service was fast and very friendly. My turkey melt on grilled sourdough bread was delicious with roasted peppers, cheese, tomato, and perfectly cooked turkey. The side of fries was delicious! My bf said his veggie burger was tasty too. The interior screams Western, but I think the whole town of Lone Pine does. If you are looking for any non fast food options in between Bishop and Lancaster, then your options are not going to be the best. Mt. Whitney is pretty good. The onion rings are A-Ok. The shakes are not the best but are A-Ok. I think you get that this place is a pretty classic 3 star place. They have a crazy assortment of meats that they will throw on the grill. I actually had elk for the first time and I must say that it was not that exciting in burger form. Descending the last few miles of Mt. Whitney, all I could think about was food. A burger to be exact. A big, juicy burger. With bacon. And cheese. Visions of french fries danced through my head like some sort of salty mirage. Reaching Lone Pine, we immediately headed to the Mt. Whitney Restaurant, since the sign outside boasted the "Best Burgers In Town". Sign me up! Told we could sit 'anywhere', it took a few tries to find a clean table. I wasn't in the mood to be picky, because all I cared about was that they had burgers. And beer. Speaking of beer, my friend was pretty excited to see they served Death Valley Pale Ale - it went very well with the cheeseburger, fries and onion rings we devoured. To be honest, I really didn't taste the first few bites of anything. I was hungry and would have eaten a Post-It note if it had bacon & cheese on it. Once I surfaced for air, however, I realized that the burger was good. Really good. The pillow soft potato bun neatly contained the juicy patty, crisp bacon and oh-so-important cheese. The fries were the salty reward I was craving. We came to the Mt. Whitney Restaurant before a camping trip in the Lone Pine Campground. I sorta wish I checked the Yelp app beforehand, because it turns out, there were likely better options around us. This place is just bizarre and I'm not certain if it's the town or just this restaurant. We were in the market for some meat and beers, fuel to burn off on a later hike. But when the server came to our table, it was clear she could not serve us- she was only about 11 years old! Haha. So she sent an adult for our drink order. The sad thing was the salad was the best part of the meal. Just a side salad but had some great dressing and croutons. My fiance had the burger and it was good, not great. I had chicken fried steak. Normally I would say, what a treat! But this time it was just covered in waaaaay too much gravy and my fiance wasn't sure if it was cooked properly. Eeeep. Also, my beer glass was leaking the entire meal. That was annoying, I'm guessing it was broken. We stopped for lunch after the WWW 50k and had a couple burgers. They have a veggie patty they can substitute. I had the Bleu cheese burger and it was good. My GF had a teriyaki veggie burger. We were both starved and it hit the spot. They both came with fresh veggies on the burger and a side.
