Located on Lone pine on the 395, Mt. Whitney Restaurant is a very nice stop over while going through the town, or as a final dinner destination after visiting the Alabama Hills, Mount Whitney, or the town itself. With decor and ambiance of times gone by when the town hosted almost all the filmed serialized western TV shows of the era, the place is nevertheless cozy, specially in winter days and nights. The staff is fast, polite and attentive, and with no qualms of having your meal your way (guilty). The food is quite good and tasty. Some of the offerings are larger than expected (specially breakfast). Charbroiled burgers are nice and juicy, and they offer venison, buffalo, and elk patties too. Large, crunchy french fries (a little salt happy sometimes). Trout (?!) is excellent and strangely fresher than some other seafood restaurants on the coast, the same with their Clam Chowder (figure that one out). Cottage cheese?. Yes, please. Grilled Cheese Sandwich, old fashion, but it bloody still rocks anywhere =) (you screw up this dish, dude, just give it up). Livers and Onions sans Onions: Tender/juicy. As stated, breakfast is both good, and sometimes too much (omelets), specially if you order extra gravy with your hash brows (duh). Alabama Hills Burger with extra mushrooms (and avocado,... and a fried egg on top [what?]) was my favorite. Other foods to try next time: Elk and Veggie burgers, Roast Turkey, and fried Zucchinis. They speak "Low Carb/Vegan" too. Caveats: * The "Hmm": Finally had Mt. Whitney Buffalo Burger, had it, okay. The "Buffalo" part didn't do anything for me, good or bad (sokay). * The "Meh": Chili. After a hard day in the saddle, you may feel entitled to a good meal. If so, this place is not for you. Possibly the worst meal I've attempted to eat. Fortunately, common sense stepped in and persuaded me to leave it. We could have saved $25 and done what we ended up doing, which was going to the market and buying crackers and cheese. For the record, I had spagetti and what was advertised as marinara sauce. The food arrived lukewarm and tasted unappetizing. She had a plate of tomato, cottage cheese, sliced egg, and grilled chicken. She described the cottage cheese as "fresh" and the chicken as "mostly OK but weird around the edges." Really good food, awesome service, and friendly conversation. The portions are large, and absolutely delicious. They brought out a bowl of their chili verde soup for us to sample, with our meal. Amazing! We could have probably eaten just the soup. The burgers were really amazing. The club sandwich was HUGE! Spaghetti was wonderful... the chips were home made and came with really tasty salsa. Hadn't had a restaurant visit like this in a while. We started following the hostess to be seated but she rushed ahead and we followed her into the other room, where she was already waiting on another group. We didn't realize she'd dropped our menus on a table and walked off. We went to sit at our table and just waited there for 10-15 minutes. Nobody approached us - not even to bring us water. There were others walking around and looking at us but nobody approached. After realizing that no one was going to bother taking our order any time soon, we just got up and left. Before leaving, the guy at the table next to ours had a problem with his order and asked the waitress who just shrugged him off so the guy took his plate, got up, and walked to the kitchen to get his question answered. Never seen anything like it. It's a small town joint so things are going to be slower but I've been to much more secluded places in places much more laid back than this one and the service has not been this bad. Our journey from San Diego made us hungry for some authentic local food so we chose Mr. Whitney because their sign boasted the best hamburgers in town. We received a warm welcome from the host and we were promptly seated in the bar section of the establishment. We were hungry so we decided quickly on the patty melt and the pastrami burger for the blonde. Although it seemed to take some time before we were greeted by our server, but perhaps we were anxious to try the best burgers in town. Unfortunately, we don't think they are the best burgers in town. We believed that they were smaller than we expected. I've had breakfast here twice before off-road touring the area. It's nice and the ambiance adds to the experience. I have nothing to complain about the food. The service is nice and friendly. The only thing that makes me laugh here is the price structure. My wife, kid, and I all got a breakfast with protein, eggs, and either pancakes or french toast. When you look at all three plates, they almost look the same but yet the prices were quite different. If all three of us ordered from the kids menu, we all would've been satisfied plus would've saved a few bucks. Double check the menu items on the windows before picking from the menu. Exactly what we're looking for on the road. Great burgers and sandwiches, kitschy cowboy decor and 90's country on the radio. I split a bacon burger with my son. The bun was pretty basic and maybe a little squished but probably from cutting it in half for us. Burger itself was thick and we'll cooking to order with many slices of crispy bacon on top. Husband's BLT was also well built. Service was super friendly and quick despite being busy. Seemed to have a good number of locals eating lunch when we stopped by. Grabbed a Mt. Whitney souvenir magnet and an ice cream cone for the road. We'll probably stop here on the way home. read more

Good stuff: awesome old faded John Wayne pictures all over the place! The grilled tomato, cheese and egg was really good. Decent fries. They add vanilla to Diet Coke if you ask, which is excellent. Bad stuff: the bathroom. Good lord - just hold it! Don't go on there! Worst of all, when the bill came she charged me $12.00 for the grilled tomato sandwich even though it was listed in the menu for $8.00. I asked her about it and she said it was for the fries. I opened the menu and showed where in LARGE print it says "ALL SANDWICHES COME WITH FRIES OR...." she then tried to back track and say "oh they need to change the menu..." the menus are old and faded and have obviously been used for years. This stop on the way to Mt. Whitney portals was a diamond in the rough. From start to finish, this place had the best customer service. They smiled and were very friendly. We loved their homemade salsa and chips so much that we asked what was in the salsa and they actually gave us the receipe. When we left we asked for a cup for our tea to go and they actually brought us full cups. I cannot recommend this place more. Will go back for sure. read more

I had a hamburger, not bad, but could have been much better with a better quality of meat, I think was frozen patty. Really grateful that my husband and I got sent away from The Grill and discovered this place. Arlene was hilarious and an awesome waitress that made our night and rejuvenated us for 4 more hours of drive time. Chicken noodle soup was so good and definitely hit the spot. Mash was delicious. Meat loaf is a hit and miss with people because it has like A1 or some strong taste mixed in with the meat. It was a miss for me and Arlene was so kind to remove it from the bill. My family and I had breakfast here, after a long 4 hour drive in route to Lake Mammoth. The breakfast was amazing and very fresh. The service was great too. Having them offer outside seating during this Covid thing, worked out great for us, as we were able to have our dogs sit outside. Not fancy but very fresh ingredients and the food is done well. They seem understaffed so service is a little slow but nowhere near so bad as some of the other places in town. Not for people in a hurry! I was passing through this town last week. Stopped because supposedly they had the best burger in town. Well, the food was good...when it finally arrived 50 minutes later. There was only one (woman) waitress on the floor. She finally took our order after she took care of all of the locals. Then, once in a while, awkwardly told us after we were intently staring at her every time she walked by, usually stopping to chat up her local peeps. There was a younger male waiter(?) dirty looking, but much more helpful trying to help out as he could. When we did finally get our food we asked for some napkins and extra pickles... well those requests were ignored. She never did bring the lemon for the drinks we requested from our beginning order, either. The young man did when we asked him though, and the napkins. As we were ready to leave, (we had to flag her down to get our ticket) there were other disgruntled people in the restaurant complaining about the poor service too. I try to patronize local businesses when I travel, but until they get this waitress trained up... or get more cooks during lunchtime, AND if you don't have a lot of time to spare, PASS this place up. read more

Been here before, but I was too tired to realize the food isn't that great and the service is worse. Their goal is to get you in and out as quick as possible and they aren't shy to do so. The waitresses will push a menu at you and come back every fifteen seconds to see if you're ready. Food: There are very few selections for vegetarians (during breakfast) and they won't let you order from the lunch menu until 11. This is because "the fryer isn't turned on" so no onion rings or fries. Anything good basically. Atmosphere: The place is weird family owned business where they the owner will hover and watch you give them a tip. BEWARE: they will pre-tip while swiping your credit card so notice how much your meal was before and after. They added $5 to our $22 meal (not including tax) all while the owner was hovering and staring at us. Overall: a very weird and outdated place where the food is ok and the prices are steep for some strange reason. Best burgers in town? I'm not sure, but I'm not coming back to try one. read more

Best burger in town? Either Alabama Hill has very low standards or the restaurant is lying. Expensive and mediocre. So it took a while for our order to be taken and then we had to order by the number - it seems simply giving the waitress the name of the burger was not acceptable. The young waitress was less than enthusiastic and the prices were rather high for a greasy spoon ($12 for a burger??) but the other waitress and the busboy were very sweet. The decor is very passé with worn carpeting and linoleum tables, but there is a myriad of black and white old photos, some of them signed, all over the walls that make it somewhat quaint. We got a Maverick burger (#10) and an Alabama Hill (#1) with deep fried corn, extra crispy fries, and onion rings ordered medium. It took much too long for the food to come out. The order came out right, but the meat was grossly overdone and the burger was bland in general. The fries tasted like they had been cooked, left to get cold, and then thrown back in to heat up, and then left out to cool down. The $3 fried corn (half a tiny tasteless ear) was a joke and the onion rings were cold. And one bathroom for a restaurant this size is ridiculous. I'm sure there are much better places to eat and we'll try to find one next time. Two stars for the friendly attempts of the other two staff members and because the place was clean. read more

We stopped here for breakfast in February on our way north. Breakfast was okay, nothing special, standard eggs, pancakes and bacon fare. But it was hot and quickly served and the coffee was fresh. The surprise came when we got our bill and it was $40 (before tip). When we asked why, we were told that coffee refills were $2.00 each, and we were also charged extra for having our eggs poached. Almost $8 to poach our 4 eggs, on top of the price of the egg dish itself. I would have preferred the waitress to let us know the extra costs at the time of ordering, especially since the "processing" fees were not noted anywhere on the menu. We always have breakfast at Alabama Hills Cafe around the corner from the Mt Whitney Restaurant, but it was closed Wednesday. It took almost an hour from the time we were seated to the time our food arrived. Food was OK, but we couldn't enjoy our breakfast because we were constantly shooing flies away from the food. My husband and I just had dinner at the Mt. Whitney. The server was a nice girl but needs to be more attentive. We had to ask if they serve alcohol for her to bring us the beer and wine menu. Also I had to ask for a knife. The food was variable. My husband's fried shrimp was pretty good. I got the turkey dinner which tasted like cafeteria food. Our side salads were just soggy lettuce with no other veggies. The chocolate cake was actually pretty good. We came here because it was recommended at the hotel we were staying at.
