My husband is a fan of banana bread, so he got their signature latte. We didn't taste the banana flavor at the first sip, but after a good stir, the caramelized banana flavor came through. The vanilla bean cream top gave a good texture. We both finished our lattes in no time. The cost was around $16, excluding tip. They also had baked goods and cake pops for sale. What really stands out is their mission: helping formerly homeless and transitional-aged youth train as baristas. Because of that, I can give some grace, like when the cookie was sold to another customer after I'd already purchased it, without an apology or offer to replace it, (they did replace it after I asked). Still, I hope they continue developing their customer service, so it matches the quality of their drinks and pastries. Bonus points for the soundtrack. Part of this transition is training them as baristas at their coffee shops. Rosebud started out as a coffee cart concept before the Pasadena café opened. Founder Dan Davidson recently opened a second location in HLP just a few blocks from my house. I stopped in on a Sunday morning and received a warm "Hello" from Gabby. I noticed how spacious and cozy the place was. Seating is abundant and there is merchandise, bagged coffee, and other cute stuff available for purchase. They also have yummy pastries in the case. I ordered a Café De Olla - their version is a flat white with café de olla syrup. Gabby informed me that there is no charge for milk alternatives, which is great. I requested mine with almond milk. Gabby prepared my beverage with care and added a dusting of cinnamon over the latte art. The bold richness of the coffee was balanced out by the creaminess of the almond milk and I could taste the notes of cinnamon and spice. It was the prefect start to my morning. For me, none of this matters if 1: the coffee is underwhelming and 2: the space is uncomfortable! On first glance, the shop is gorgeous and well styled, but upon use, it's awkward, cramped, and uncomfortable to work or relax in. Outdoor seating is sparse and uninviting, and the indoor space (also acting as the wine bar at night?) is dim and bleak even during the early hours of the day. Oddly arranged couches with small tables (covered in crumbs during my latest visit) create an odd distribution of comfort and utility, with the more comfortable back couches, capable of seating 5-8 people, often only hosting 3 at most due to the small tables, leaving standing in the tight lobby or sitting on wooden stools over bar shelves that can't fit HALF a laptop on. I feel like it is my duty to communicate transparently about my experience here because I think this place has huge potential, and I want nothing more than to see another East Side coffee stop thrive!
