Great coffee, cute atmosphere and friendly service. My only disappointment was my egg sandwich on an English muffin. The English muffin was raw. It didn't appear to be toasted but maybe you need to ask them to do that. Sandwich would have been better that way. The taste overall was just plain. I was at work and couldn't go back so I just ate the inside and threw out the muffin. They do have really tasty ham and cheese Pop Tarts. Wow! Hubs and I finally swore off Starbucks and were looking for a cute cafe to make our Saturday morning home. Requirements: excellent espresso drinks, delicious food, nice staff. Our first visit to Mud and Char met those requirements and exceeded all expectations. Our lattes were perfect (no burnt taste like Starbucks) and the food... I could live on their loaded lox bagels, on an everything bagel. Hubs had the mint cucumber bagel and loved it; he said he reminded him of our last trip to London! Honestly, I've not had such light, fluffy bagels as long as I can remember. I can't emphasize enough how delicious everything was. They also have vegan, dairy free, and gluten free options. I was impressed to see that everything is made from scratch and happy to have so many healthy options, especially in the case like chia pudding and veggie frittatas. And, the staff was so nice and helpful. The space is also beautiful with lots of natural light and clean lines. This is a great find and I couldn't more highly recommend ditching starbucks for this gem. You won't regret it. We'll be coming back often... like tomorrow! Pro tips: -Order at the counter and then grab a seat. They'll call the name of your drink/food when it's ready and you can walk up to the counter to get it. -Seating is limited but actually works well. I went to this cafe for lunch with a friend. I absolutely love it. I ordered the power green bowl and it was delicious to look at and eat. The fact that they are accommodating in nature to food allergies is really appreciated by me (on an animal dairy free diet). The employees are friendly. The decor is simple and nice. I have never been to a coffee house that I loved and I love coffee. Everthing about this place was a blessing. The staff the ambiance the customs were even sweet. I sat with someone who came in alone like myself we had such a full beautiful conversation. I enjoyed the latte and fritta everything was so good ! My latte was good and hot. I heard there was a new coffee/tea place in town I was excited bc I believe in supporting local businesses! I wanted to check the menu bc my husband is a vegetarian, and I sent a picture of some choices to my husband. Three days later we go, the prices were very different (a lot less online) from the website-um okay? I referred back to the screen shots, I took to confirm. When I mentioned that they were like "okay-we will look into it" okay how about you try to sweeten the sale, since your website is misleading! We ordered anyways to try it. Took like 20 mins, could have had a full sit down meal in that time. The food is good, but very small portions for such high prices. Coffee was average, nothing that stands out. I finally got around to stopping in! I've been eyeing this place for awhile; you don't see a lot of independent coffee shops in the suburbs! The ambiance is exactly what you see of shops in cities. Neat, clean interior. They have a ton of unique food options, which I imagine I'll getting around to trying. They all sound delicious! I ordered a 16 oz. cold brew and one of their homemade pop tarts, I believe it was Nutella berry. Both were very good!! I added a little maple syrup to my coffee when I got home and it was perfect. I'm giving four stars because $8 for a 16 oz. cold brew is a pretttyyyy steep in my opinion. But to be honest, it probably won't deter me from returning and trying other things. I'm so glad there is finally a coffee shop in the Lisle/Downers Grove area that has both a neighborhood feel and that of a craft coffee shop you might find in Chicago. While the menu is currently small, they offer a mix of standard fare (bagels, sandwiches, muffins, toasts, etc) and unique options like power bowls, and they seem more than willing to make something beyond the menu if they have the needed ingredients. The argon cold brew, tea options, and lattes are all excellent and reasonably priced, and the drip coffee is much better than other local options. If you are looking for a coffee shop with more soul than Starbucks, I highly recommend Mud and Char. read more

Very cute coffee shop in the suburbs that is definitely worth a visit! Had a berry good power bowl, power green power bowl, cream cheese/cucumber/fresh mint bagel, cinnamon swirl loaf, and of course coffee, which were all fresh and tasty. The bagel was hands down my favorite item. Serving sizes are generous. Atmosphere is great, and most importantly staff were kind and friendly. My family and I enjoyed our visit. Pros: Decor Great tasting food Allergen-friendly menu options Comfortable seating Clean bathroom Friendly staff Cons: Too small - It's hard to find seating if you are a party of more than two people. Or reverse; you also might find you and your friend feel overcrowded when more people walk in, also trying to find an available chair. It's a great sign that this place is popular, but I hope M&C can expand their space in the future. Wait time for food - A single order may come out broken up. This means you'll get part of your order in a few minutes and will be waiting another 10 minutes or so for your meal or drink. Again, M&C is very new, so with time, I am confident they will work out their kinks in training and staffing. Dirty dishes on the tables - I think customers should be able to return their used dishes to a bin, like Panera does. The staff wouldn't have to concern themselves with clearing dishes right away (since seating is limited) and new customers would have clean tables. Needs more detailed menu descriptions - Some ingredients are omitted from certain menu item descriptions, which can complicate the ordering process. read more

I randomly found this place. I saw a chop suey sign and pulled in. Saw that business closed down which was next to this place. Walked in to find out they had my favorite ice tea, Yunnan Black. Mud and Char is my favorite neighborhood coffee shop...in the United States! I'm glad I stumbled upon this chic coffee house a few months ago. The coffee and food is amazing. Their menu changes monthly, but they'll cater to you if there's something not on the menu, they'll have it next time or do their best to bring it back! My drink of choice is the "Bianco Mocha". Honestly I had no idea about this place till someone asked me to meet them there for coffee. It is such a cute place. I got a vanilla iced coffee with almond milk and it was delicious. Neat little cafe nestled in a cozy neighborhood. We stopped in on our way home from a wedding and were very pleasantly surprised! The staff is very friendly and happy to discuss menu options. Tried the "Power Green" power bowl (a delicious smoothie with granola and chia seeds), broccoli & cheese quiche, and the "Classic" breakfast bowl (quinoa, marinated veggie salad, avocado, feta cheese, and toast). Options were very refreshing and delicious. There were also a number of unique baked goods in the dessert case that looked tasty too (Apple and Sausage "Pop-Tart"! ). A nice alternative to standard diner brunch with a very modern atmosphere. This is a great little coffee shop in an area inundated with Dunkin and Starbucks. Just had an iced coffee (if you cant get the simple stuff right, its probably not worth trying other stuff) and it was really really good!! I was very happy. They have a good amount of variety and the food on the menu and in the case both look great! I will be back often. We live right down the street and are SO PUMPED Mud and Char is here! We decided to make it a family date to go there for breakfast every Sunday morning, but we can't stop ourselves from going multiple times a week besides that. The rest of our order was average to above average as we also ordered bagel w/ cream cheese, yogurt parfait, espresso, and cold brew. The lack of seating for more than 2 people was a disappointment. There are lots of 'local' coffee places in the area. This one is unique, because not only do you pay 4 dollars for an over roasted cheap bean, but you have to get it yourself. I can do that at the 7-11 down the street and pay 2 or three dollars less for surprisingly better coffee(McDonald's and DD have even better coffee down the street the other way). This is just another business owner who believes that branding is more important than the product. At least they are not the worst place in the strip mall(That belongs to Mojo's). read more
