A good place to go if you don't want to be found. Most everyone else will be across the street at…read moreStarrs bar, which gives this place an advantage. Space to move around, and if you're drinking alone, no pressure to engage in conversation. The dive element is there, but hidden by cleanliness. You can almost fool yourself into thinking that you're at mom and pop restaurant instead of a mom and pop bar. Low-key and friendly. Sandy, the owner, was our bartender for the visit. She was very nice while talking us up. Sandy seems happy with the clientele, and they seem to like her too. The fact that she had the time for conversation will tell you how busy the place was, or more to the point, wasn't. As sleepy as Main Street in Mayberry. Otis didn't make an appearance. Stop in and pound a couple, then mosey across the street to Starrs for a couple more. Sounds like a fun filled afternoon to me. Quick Tip: I don't expect anyone to read this review, seeing how Mallalieu Inn has been open for a century, and this is only the second review on Yelp. I know, it's a bit tongue in cheek, but heck, Yelp has been around for like 20 years. Taking that into consideration, low-key may be a couple levels too high!

They don't pretend to be anything they aren't. It's a blue collar place that has beer in bottles, soda in cans, basic food that's good and cheap and served in a basket. Mallalieu was named after the lake that's behind the building. It was opened in 1908 by George Starr. This son, Ernest, opened the "Starr's Bar" across the street after prohibition ended. There's a lot of local history here. The owner is the also the bartender, the server, the chief cook and bottle washer. She's personable and good at what she does. After talking to a few people it looks like I should come back on Wednesday night for the steak fry or Friday night for the fish fry. Thanks, Mallalieu Inn! -Daddy Maxx Retro

Food was alright, I was expecting more of an in house meat type of experience but it seemed like alot of prepackaged frozen items. My meal was lacking flavor but was cooked perfect. Duck wontons are delicious( pretty sure those are premade frozen) French onion soup was good, not overly salty like many other places. Drinks were good! Desert was also good, didn't taste homemade but had good flavor. Service was quick and friendly. Overall was a nice dinner

They have ton of tvs on the rooftop to watch sports, etc. They also have huge see through panels to protect you from the elements. Weather can change in an instance. Food: We ordered the Gouda chicken nachos with guac. It was decadent. So delish. Highly recommend. We also had jalapenos on the side so those that love them can enjoy them. Also ordered a size of fries which were okay. Drinks: I ordered a mason jar cocktail of the pina colada (not blended). I don't remember seeing the cost on the menu for their cocktails and didn't realize it was going to be in a Large mason jar. I thought it would be in a smaller sized one. Anyways it was fine and tasted good but $25 for a cocktail was steep but it was also like having 2 cocktails. Look forward to coming back and trying an entree.

They had 2 of my favorite white wines on the list, great. Until the sweet new server nervously told me they were out of both of them and only had their house Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay available. Out of a lack of choices I ordered a Chardonnay and when I told the server it was so oaky it was undrinkable, she came back to say her manager wouldn't take it off the bill because there was "nothing wrong with it." Ok fine, I see his logic. What I will also say is that mentality as a manager to make a guest pay for something they were unhappy with due to a lack of managing inventory and limited selections, he lost a repeat customer and prompted a negative review. I was a server too for a long time. I know how wine pricing works. It would have cost nothing to help find a drink a guest actually wants. Putting profit over people always results in losing money. It's no wonder there were plenty of tables available there while San Pedro was on a 90 minute wait. I'd say there's a LOT of room for improvement in how it's run. Treat your guests and servers with respect and be generous with your offerings and problem solving. It always comes back ten fold. There's too many good places to eat in Hudson to come back here.
