So first off, I held off coming as it formerly was a biker bar, and still has times when the bikers pull in. But I'm glad I finally dropped in. The workers are very nice people. It was about 5pm on a Saturday, nice September day. Some people were eating outside, while we were inside. So what got me in was the German food. We love it. Got a full sampling. The pretzel was good, although some other German restaurants may serve a larger one, it was still good, with German mustard and cheese dip. The schnitzel was great, although I couldn't taste much different between the chicken and pork. The sides were good, can't go wrong. Make sure you save room for dessert, they're all wonderful. Ambience is just ok but if you're there to n Thursday Jam Night, you'll hear some great music from people who just love to play and sing. We tried the Austrian white wine and it was excellent. Husband had Salmon who said it was cooked just right and flavorful. I had the chicken paprikash. The sauce was delicious but could have used a bit more Hungarian paprika and a bit more salt. Wonderful experience from start to finish! The staff was friendly, the restaurant was well maintained and the atmosphere was very welcoming. We enjoyed a drink at the bar before heading outside to the beautiful patio, which was the perfect setting for dinner. Every dish we tried was outstanding, from the crispy Brussels Sprouts and fresh Mozzarella Tomato Salad to the Wiener Schnitzel and Grandma's Ragout! We had an assortment of desserts, which were all delightful, but our favorites were the Kaiserschmarrn and the Apple Strudel. The owners were incredibly knowledgeable and happy to share recommendations on both the food and their wine and beer selections. I only leave reviews when I am blown away with a place, and this is no different. I went to this fine establishment on a first date after we visited iron bound down the road. We sat outside with a Great Dane and were greeted by the owner of the fine establishment who was also the chef. He explained how he was a classically trained chef from Austria (I believe) and had a restaurant in the city before opening this one. He gave us a rundown of the menu and also told us the specials, each way he described everything it was with passion and precision. At the end of his presentation I told Him I trusted his recommendation and to bring us two apps and two entrees, whatever he would like to make. I'm going to talk about the best thing he brought out.... This Ragu that he said was his grandmas recipe. It was quite possibly the best Austria/german dish I ever have had. Each bite perfect with a balance of spices and tenderness that is quite the accomplishment to perfect. While this place is over 45 min away from Me, I'll be going back. This kind of German food doesn't exist in North NJ, it crushes the black Forrest inn. Go here. You won't be sorry. read more

Interesting place. Has an Austrian theme to the food. The decor is more country saloon though. The soft pretzel and holstein schnitzel were excellent. The calamari was okay. The owner is a Hungarian gentleman who is very hospitable and obviously whoever is cooking is incredibly talented. If you're looking for a good fresh food with a creative flair this is a great spot. I was slightly surprised to find this place in Asbury while scrolling Yelp. Asbury is close to us but it is actually in the part of town near 78. We went for dinner on a Saturday night around 6 so there were other diners but not busy. There was a band setting up to start at 8. Staff was very attentive. We had the soft pretzel, Weiner schnitzel, and pulled pork sandwich. All was very good and served hot and fresh. My husband ordered a cocktail that was mostly ice in the glass and only a few sips of drink so he also ordered a beer. Food was very good, and schnitzel piece was XL. I do wish it was served with a lemon wedge to squeeze on it as that is more traditional to me. Sides seemed traditional but would have preferred spaetzel. Unfortunately they were out of chicken parikash (or it wasn't made for the day yet) which made my decision easier but hope to go back to try it some day. read more

My husband and I went here on a Friday night around 6:30. We were immediately welcomed at the door and sat at a table. I can't emphasize enough how nice everyone was that worked here. They really added to the experience and made the night so much nicer. We got the chicken lollipops to start, then I got the short ribs and my husband got the muddy burger. The food was so good, better than we expected. The short ribs were fall apart tender, the mashed potato's that came with it were perfection. The burger was cooked perfectly and was seasoned well. We finished dinner off with the kaiserschmarren and blueberries for dessert. It was SO GOOD. We never had it before and are so glad we tried it. We can't wait to go back again! read more

This place has a unique vibe. I'm really not sure what this place wants to be. The food has an Austrian/Hungarian flair, but the waitstaff is more Quad Cities. First of all, the restaurant is clean, tables ready to go, spotless silverware, etc. The music in the background is bluesy/country. The restaurant is on a rural road near I-78, and the location feels like a NJ holler, if there is such a thing. Nevertheless, the food was well prepared and tasty. If you are tired of the same ol' same ol' when it comes to dining options in Hunterdon County then PLEASE come and give this place a try! They just opened so, be patient! The exterior facade and open wooden interior give off a western saloon vibe while the HUGE bar inside, with its tin metal roof and back lights give off a cantina vibe. It's in the menu and the food where you'll find a taste of Europe with German, Austrian and Hungarian influences to be more specific. Don't worry, there's the a burger and steak for those of you scared to try something different. Although, for many in the area, I bet this will remind you of the comfort food your grandparents made! We were a party of 4 and every one of us enjoyed our entire experience, from beginning to end. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly. He had a deep understanding of the menu and the concept behind this restaurant. Our food came out quickly and every single thing we ate was delicious. For starters we had the chicken lollipops and the soft pretzel. The chicken lollipops were presented so nicely, were huge and very tender. The pretzel and the Bavarian beer cheese dip were delicious! HEADS UP: the dip is just that, a cool dip with cheese and spices and maybe even a little horseradish. It is NOT the hot orange cheese sauce that you're probably used to. The mustard that came with it was very spicy and I loved it. For our entrees we had the Muddy Burger, Grandma's Ragout, the Chicken Schnitzel and The Beef Short Ribs. The burger was tender and tasty with excellent flavors from the spread and the cheese. I would liken Grandma's Ragout to Poutine. Apparently, this is literally the owner's grandma's recipe. It's tender cooked pork with peas over fries with a tasty gravy. So flavorful, so comforting and so fun to eat. The chicken schnitzel was some of the best fried chicken cutlets I've ever had. No, they are not all the same. I wonder what they did for this one but it was ultra crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The cucumber salad that came with it was also awesome. They need to improve the German potato salad that comes with it though. Maybe it's a traditional recipe but, it needs a little something extra to elevate it. The beef short ribs were fall off the bone tender and had an amazing sauce with it. The bread dumplings were a different and delicious accompaniment to it. Every single dessert was a hit but the floating apple strudel is to die for! If you only come here for that, please do!! I cannot wait to come back and try the other European dishes that are on the menu. They have big plans for outdoor patio seating and maybe even outdoor entertainment in the summer! Exactly as the sign says- good food & good vibes. The short rib was delicious as was the chicken paprikash. The service was very attentive and friendly. There is only one high chair in the restaurant and since it was in use, our waitress accommodated us as best she could by seating us at a booth. The bathroom was very clean. The bar was busy for early on a Friday night; it is a full bar with a moderate variety of beer and wine as well as cocktails. We will most definitely be back. Our waitress told us that Mondays are karaoke, Wednesdays are line dancing and Saturdays are live bands. read more

After a long chilly day on a golf course my husband and I were looking for some comfort food and also something a little different than the usual Italian places or bar food. Based on the reviews we decided to give this a shot. I had never been to this place when it was operating as a bar/saloon type of restaurant because that's not really my thing. I was actually expecting a little different setting than what we saw because of the type of food they are serving. It still looks like a country western type of bar with a huge corner for bands, karaoke and a dance floor with a large bar in the opposite corner. Based on the atmosphere I feel like it should be burgers, fried chicken, and ribs on the menu. I kept looking for a mechanical bull and the country music that was playing really didn't seem to fit with the type of food they serve. They do have a somewhat limited menu (only 1 basic salad option) and I think the prices are quite high. We started with the soft pretzel which came with about 2 TBSP of cheese sauce and some very spicy mustard. It was good but also smaller than other "jumbo" pretzels we've had and not sure it's worth $9. It was also the cheapest appetizer on the menu. I also had the soup of the day which was a bean soup ($12 for soup?) and the wild mushroom artisan pizza ($14) which was on a very thin cracker type crust. Both were very good though. My husband had the shepard's pie which he also thought was very good. Our server was very attentive in spite of serving 14 people at the bar and 4 tables and the only server working. We noticed the owner sitting at a corner table with 2 other people and he seemed more concerned with bringing food out to them than helping the kitchen and/or server. The kitchen was very slow. We waited a long time for our food (there were only 4 tables occupied) and were planning on leaving after our meal but our server mentioned the apple strudel just came out of the oven so we thought "that should be quick" and ordered it. We waited another 20 minutes for a 2 inch slice of strudel that had a warm vanilla glaze. It was good but again not worth the $14 they charge or the long wait. I notice that they don't post the prices on their website and I'm not sure if that gives them the option to change them frequently. They also charge a service fee if you use a credit card, which a lot of restaurants are doing, but it would have been a nice courtesy if that was pointed out before paying. Bottom line: The food was very good but overpriced, and the country western atmosphere was disappointing. We left feeling slightly ripped off even though the food was good and probably won't be back. read more

The pork was super thin and crispy and the size of your plate. Chicken and spatzel very tender. Had the Kaiserschmarren for dessert, which was like cakey pancake pieces with wild blueberries. Not overly sweet and delicious. Overall great meal. Chicken lollipops were excellent, Brussels sprouts very good but felt it was a bit light on the amount of brussel sprouts. Dish was full but a lot of it were bits and pieces instead of full sprouts. Salmon was nicely done and good portion. Short rib perfectly done but cut could have been a bit bigger and veggie size was lacking. Apple streusel dessert also great but a bit on the small size.
