They've got like 6 on tap I believe w/one of them being a cider which wasn't too bad. I don't like when it's too sweet. They were playing some great hip hop which we've officially concluded is a Portland thing and we love it. Seems no matter what the feel of an establishment they're playing quality hip hop. Oh my. Since the smoking ban (the last time the mister and I were here) Mulligan's has invested in a significant upgrade. Gone is the smoke-soaked carpet. Gone are the four pool tables (now only one.) Gone are the awkwardly shaped booths, shoved in at any angle. Walls have been painted, lighting has been lowered, tables have been replaced, wood floors installed. It looks downright respectable. Music is still loud and good, and drinks are still strong. What's to complain about there? Here's the thing though: although this is clearly in an established neighborhood, (the neighborhood where I live actually), it curiously feels like a tourist bar. How is that possible? Another reviewer called this the Applebees of bars FIVE YEARS AGO, and even now, with the renovation, I think I have to agree... all the right elements are here, except the regulars. For some reason, it just feels like the components haven't quite set or something yet. Maybe it just needs some time, all of the right things seem to be in place at Mulligans, other than the locals. Wow. Awful service. The bartender that worked her on Valentine's Day was the worst. Maybe that's why she had nothing else to do on this particular day. Here is how it goes down..... I walk in and order a Boneyard Rojo. She pours it and I take one sip and tip her two bucks. I then realize that they have Boneyard IPA. I'm like, "hey, I'm sorry but I didn't see the Boneyard IPA, would it be possible to swap our my red for the IPA?" She's like, "you mean the beer I already poured you?" And proceeds just to look at me like I'm an idiot. I'm like, "alright fine, no big deal, don't worry about it." She then doesn't let it go and says "it's not like we are hiding it (the beer list) from you." So....I didn't get the IPA. I don't understand how a place like this survives in Portland. I've sent beers back in several occasions here in Portland without question. I understand her saying no - I can live with that. But she can save the attitude. Note to management: keep an eye on the quality of service happening in this place before you go out of business. Sure, you have a prime location but there's probably a reason why you are never busy. I wish I could give Mulligans no stars. I walk by this business multiple times a week, taking my child to and from daycare. They have a chalkboard outside that reads: "Free beer, topless bartenders, and false advertising." I find the sign offensive and that it adds to a misogynist atmosphere. I'm often leered at or cat-called by men sitting at their sidewalk tables. They need to remove the sign and think about their negative impact on our diverse community. read more

Thanks, Holmes, for verifying that my review from 2014 is still valid. "Industry Regular" means that people in the restaurant and bar industry go to this hangout after work. And what that means to the "rest of us" is that it's a like a biker-bar for restaurant gangs. And Holmes' attitude is EXACTLY the "closed club" attitude we encountered every time we were there. The ironic thing? my fiance and I would qualify as industry regulars. Doesn't mean we'll settle for crappy experience and rude staff. We know better. What I've always found about "industry regular" places is that the quality of the worker is reflected in their choice of industry hangout: the crappy places are where the crappy workers go; the quality places are where the classy workers go. I ended up visiting Mulligan's somewhat recently with a friend, because, well, they were the only bar open in that stretch of Hawthorne. They've made a ton of changes as far as the way the place looks, and the woman behind the bar was very friendly (and didn't mind me asking about when the changes were made, even though I imagine everyone who hasn't visited in awhile asks the same question). It was a slow day, with my friend and I reading and occasionally talking over by the pool table, but the bartender gave us just enough attention where we knew she was keeping her eyes open, but not so much so that it was awkward (especially given we were the only ones present for most of our visit). read more

Came here yesterday for a beer and some lunch. We sat outside and it was really nice out. All in all, I'll probably never come back to this place for food. It took an hour to get our food and it wasn't worth it. The bar-key comped our beers to the Happy Hour price; which is their saving grace from a 1 star. This place is A-OK. Bar Bar. Nothing more or less. If you want to stop in for a nice brew after work or just come in and get wasted this would be good joint. This bar could cater to most any type of person. It is really laid back. The service is nice. They get you what you need quick and stay on top of keeping you a happy customer. Ok, im writing this a second time since the first one i somehow managed to delete, but i had such a horrible experience here last night that i'm going to take the time to do this again. First off, i feel obligated to say that this is my neighborhood bar and while im not exactly a regular and only drink once in a blue moon, its been nice to know that I COULD go drink at a friendly place in the rare event that i wanted to. Ive been their neighbor for going on 6 years now, and its funny because the last time i went to mulligans prior to last night, the bar tender, Deanna, i believe, was very kind to me on a day where kindness was what i needed. I truly appreciated it and it made me feel very welcome. She asked me to go smoke a cigarette with her and we had a pretty good conversation during which she complimented my manners and how respectful i was. It was very hospitable of her and demonstrated her talent as a barkeep, since a good one is basically a cheaper therapist, and it earned her a pretty healthy tip from me. I had my drink and conversation, and because it was about closing time, i took my leave. My rating then wouldve been 5 stars. Now cut to last night. Another horrible day. This time im headed home and decide to stop into mulligans while riding my bike since its only 1.5 blocks from my house and its on the way anyway. It was just after two, which although 2:30 is technically when alcohol can no longer be served, many bars do last call at 2 on week days and slow nights. However, it was still bumpin inside with maybe two dozen patrons drinking, shooting pool, dancing, etc. I walked in, sat down at the bar, and waited for a bartender to show up so i could ask if it wasnt too late for a drink. While waiting, i noticed that Deanna, the same bar tender who had been so cool to me previously, was among those dancing when i came in. When the song ended, she turned, marched right up to me and before i could ask if it was not too late to get a drink, so told me I need to leave. I was confused. Wait, what? You have to leave. Now. But, why? What did i do? (Im asking this, but im getting up, cooperating. Just very thrown off by this greeting.) I dont have to have a reason. You just need to leave. Ok, im leaving, no problem, but can you please just tell me why? I dont have to have a reason why, just go. Ok, i am, i am. Shes kind of ushering me out toward the door and im backing up, leaving, all the while pleading to know WHY i'm being told to leave. She's calling other people over as if i'm being trouble when in truth, i'm moving as fast as i can, trying to get out, but i cant help but to ask what this is all about. She spurts out that its closing time and therefore i gotta go. But what about all these other people, why single me out? I dont need a reason. Im outside at this point and she's like go! Get out of here! I'm fumbling with the lock on my bike, and i'll be honest, ive got tears in my eyes, and i say can i please get my bike first? Thats when she says get your bike and fuck off. Ouch. Okay, i'm fucking off, i say. And i walk away passed all the judging eyes because at this point everyone is looking at me, most likely assuming that i DID something to warrant that kind of treatment. But hand to allah, i did nothing to elicit such a response either last night or any other. Last night, though in particular, i stayed respectful, even in the face of such frustrating disrespect, i cooperated immediately, and even though i was completely humiliated and frankly, very hurt, i bit my tongue and walked away. So due to this experience, the only way i know to get any semblance of justice is this yelp review. Deanna, i dont even want an apology, even though it would be the right thing to do, but all i want is an explanation. Why did you feel it necessary to suddenly treat me with such vitriol and disdain? Went in with my father recently and had a great time here. We were doing an informal tour of portland bars, and this was a great stop to make. Deanna was a great bartender, super friendly and welcoming, checking on us a lot. There was a smoking area outside, which I greatly appreciated, and we ended up staying for lunch, which turned out to be a great idea. Not only do they have a really good draft beer selection of mostly portland microbrews, but their lamb burgers are delicious. Super flavorful, and a huge burger. Hawthorne Blvd. is full of bars & restaurants, but this one of the few "regular" bars in the area. It's a small box of a place with an Irish theme (hence the name), 4 tv monitors, a pool table, video poker, and a little sidewalk seating. $10 burgers & sandwiches. read more

Aging hawthorne haunt dive-bar parading as a sports bar. First of all, Dont eat here, really, you're an idiot if you do considering what is nearby. only wandering suburban shoppers eat here. Second, the carpet doesnt match the curtains,know what i mean? the owners must have no clue what kind of crowd they have, i sense autopilot. Third, I love to drink here, she's a dark mistress but i can't go too long without her. The bartenders are great, depite what some whiners have written before me, they are prob the subarban invaders I mentioned earlier, and this is a NEIGHBORHOOD watering hole. I've only come to this bar for burgers, tots, and beer. Definitely one of the best if not "the best" burger I've had in Portland. The Blaze burger is dope. The perfect amount of spice and flavor and very hardy (will definitely fill you up if you're hungry). I've probably eaten here half a dozen times and it has been just as good every time. The tots are always nice and crispy. The atmosphere is very relaxed and typically has a local chillin at the bar. Some benches out front to drink, eat, and smoke it you want. Bummer! This is one of the first bars I checked out when I moved here. Usually have great drinks and service but not tonight. Once I had to stand at the bar and wait for the bartender to be done on her cell phone to come take my order. Now I've been sitting here for over 20 minutes with an empty glass. I won't be ordering another one here tonight or ever. I hate to be that person on yelp because I've been bartending for over ten years but this is just ridiculous. Went to have a beer with a couple of musicians who came to town from Mexico city. Bartender called last call, we order a last round of beers. Bartender came by a few minutes later and snatched our drinks away and told us to leave and threatened with calling immigration. A whole scene developed and even her friends apologized for her behaviour. We left this place and aren't coming back. Worth mentioning, same bartender kicked us out of another bar an hour before, just one block away. NEVER GO TO THIS PLACE. they never change the beer selection for one. the bartender girl with the shoulder length brown hair, shorter build and zero fashion sense who seems to work thurs nights and sunday nights is AWFUL. She had three customers last night (thurs 6/12) and they all ordered beer and it took her sooo long to get the beer, chit chat with some guy and tool around looking profoundly confused. everyone has bad nights, i get that, but this is not a one time deal with this girl. if she wasnt working at a bar i would think there was something wrong, mentally with her. the only time i ordered food was the last time i will ever EVER touch food from this place. it was undercooked, cold in the center, sloppy display and the plate was DIRTY along the edges as if the cook had grease and dirt on his hands while plating. Went here for the women's World Cup game and was utterly disappointed! Understaffed and the bartender was unable to answer any questions. Was hoping for a good experience watching the game but the service was completely underwhelming. If you are going to advertise for a game like this at least be prepared with a competent bartender. Had to leave at half time. When you have a sign that says fresh squeezed cocktails be prepared for people to ask for them. Don't tell me all you have is oj and cranberry out of the GUN! There is a bartender that serves his girlfriend after hours apparently and even if you are at the bar before last call, he will choose his friends because friends come first and you will not get a drink. He will then let said friends drink in the closed bar and the whole time you wonder if he understands OLCC requirements. I usually come here a lot and it's a great place with very friendly bartenders, but COME ON.. their new cook is not the best. First of all, it took forever to get our food tonight, not many food orders going on. Second, my salad was absolute garbage. It looked and tasted like I was eating soup because there was way too much vinaigrette in it (took up half the bowl). I stopped in to Mulligan's Bar & Grill the other day on Southeast Hawthorne Blvd while I was doing some Shopping. I had a Half Cranberry Juice Half Pineapple Juice. Mary was my Bartendress. I struck up a Conversation about Lots of Different Topics with the Guy on the Next Bar Stool over. Turns out he's from a Small Town in Eastern Oregon, and doesn't believe in Socialism!!! On one of the Huge Flat Screen TVs the movie " Mad Max: Fury Road " was playing... with the Sound Off and Subtitles On. My Darling Husband and I saw that Movie in the Movie Theater. As I was waiting for my Nail Polish to dry a bit more, from the Nail Salon just down the street I took my Time sipping my Mocktail. Their Ladies Bathroom has A LOT of Graffiti in it! But there were Plenty of Paper Towels, Toilet Paper and Soap. Yesss! There is EVEN a Pool Table... it takes Quarters. There were LOTS of Tables around the Bar Open for People to sit at, but everyone inside was on a Bar Stool on this Day. I think it was closer to about 4:40 PM or so when I was there. read more

I LOVE MULLIGAN'S! Seriously. What's with all the hate? I think some of the reviewers haven't been in for awhile. I work in the neighborhood and hit them up for lunch probably once a week. The BLT is delish and the fries are great too- soups are usually spot on and I do love some garlic bread. The cooks are wonderful, service has always been wonderful when I am there for dranks, and they just recently re-opened after a mini-remodel that included replacing the nasty green carpet with Pergo and redoing the bar- it looks fantastic! I like that there are so many regulars and whenever I stop in there's a variety of pals. A great lil sports/dive mix that is not so divey any longer. Check them out! read more
