We ordered Bombil fry, Paneer makhanwala (both of which were today's specials), chapati and tandoori roti. 5 stars for bombil fry (this is the only place that I know which serves bombil) -1 star for paneer makhanwala (no where close to it being "paneer makhanwala") -1 star for chapati (pro- it was made of pure wheat, con- the dough tasted stale, the chapati had a lot of dry ata stuck to it) -1 star for tandoori roti (same con as for roti plus the tandoori roti was more like papad than roti, pro-would have taken off 2 stars but the owner/chef offered to make another tandoori roti but we had to turn it down as we were already done with our lunch) read more

Initial service was kind of slow in spite of it being pretty empty, but once the food came out they checked in multiple times. We try to visit this place for authentic Mumbai flavors whenever we are in the Bay Area. They have amazing photos of famous and classic spots in Mumbai hung all around the restaurant which can quickly throw you down the memory lane. Specially the good old Mumbai food photos! We always try to get their bombil fry and pomfret fry- depends on availability. Their mutton Sukha is absolutely amazing- flavors and spicy levels are spot one, with nicely done chunks of meat. We also always get their Vada pav which is the closest to the authentic one we get in Mumbai. Removing one star because their chapati can be better as well as if they can use the India style pav in Vada pav, I will feel like I am in Mumbai. We went for lunch at the South Grimmer location 3 weeks ago and tried the Kotambir Wadi, Misal, Vada Pau, Vangi (Eggplant) - all Maharashtrian and Bombay specialties in addition to the Chicken curry. The food was well flavored and the taste was unique and different from the run of the mill Indian restaurant in the Bay area. Pretty good! The husband and I are always hunting for good chaat and street food dishes and Mumbai Chowk has some of the best around Newark/Fremont. We had four dishes plus dessert: Pav bhaji, papadi chaat, Ragda Pattice, misal pav, kulfi and chai. We went here after reading the positive Yelp reviews. But we were soon disappointed. Our order was a chicken curry, fish curry, Shrimp curry, fish rice plate and a bowl of plain rice. The chicken and shrimp was usual and nothing outstanding in taste. The fish however was obviously thawed from a frozen state. That is not unexpected but it was not thawed well and chewy and bit raw. We brought this to the owners attention who dismissed it as acceptable when something is fried after thawed. That was not the customer experience and taste we came to expect from a restaurant. I think the owner needs to focus on customer and their feedback rather than shrugging of their shortcomings as acceptable to them. We won't be visiting the place again. read more

Mumbai Chowk aka Amchi Mumbai! Being nuts over chaat & typical other street foods I found myself not much liking the chaat flavors we get here. The northern & southern Indian style of chaat has its own version of taste especially the Paani puri,this not being my style made me miss my Mumbai- Pune pani puri taste even more. Finally, Bombay chowk came close to my rescue. It is a decently close to a small spaced eatery. Ambience is apt to its name,walls decorated with our own Mumbai stations this place is pretty welcoming. About the service, its most certainly short staffed! With only one server( atleast on the day we visited) the wait for order is well,bothersome. With the price well suiting to the pocket the portion size served is good too. Let's talk about Food- Chaat n chaat! 1. Pani puri - This was one of the first time I had pani puri the way it's prepared for back home. Crispy puri's served with separate bowls of chutneys,one green colored coriander-mint, a tangy slightly spiced flavored chutney & the other being tamarind -jaggery sweet chutney. Both had a good runny consistency,though could be made even better. Flavors were very much there to enjoy each puri dipped in the chutneys & stuffed with the pressure cooked soft & creamy yellow peas- "Ragda" as its known for in Maharashtra. Must try. 2. Sev Puri- Fresh n crispy flat puri's which are originally used in this form of chaat. Very flavorful with every bite of the puri having good spread of the potato mash with the right amount of seasonings n dollops of sev topped over. Chopped onions & coriander spread over the entire dish added a great color & taste to the dish. Chutneys both green spicy & the sweet one added were spot on. 3. Ragda Pattice- When having the typical Mumbai style chaat over the street side,the warm Ragda simmering over the stove cannot be missed! In pani puri or with the pattice it's sinfully very tasteful. Potato pattice spread over a bowl of Ragda ( yellow peas mixture) topped with chopped onions coriander & chutneys,this dish is filling & very tasty. The added spice of powdered tangy masalas gives the dish the needed punch. A Must try. 4. Wada Pav- Wow!! My Maharashtrian palate suddenly jumped sky high... One amongst their ruling dishes! As the authentic style of pav is missing that typical wada pav taste one looks out for..but nonetheless this wada pav is a killer. Great taste,perfect flavors both are very well corporated within. The wada is good sized n served warm with lightly toasted buns. Accompanied with the onion-garlic chutney this dish is amazingly good. Absolute try. 5. Misal Pav- Transported right on to the streets of Kolhapur!! Brilliant flavors & extremely flavorful! Rightly mentioned as on the menu card- Spicy!! The tari ( red chili oil) floats well off on the sprouts. Seasoned to perfection the misal is served hot with garnished farsan,chopped onions &coriander. A typical slice of lemon is served to adjust the spicing as needed. Just to mention the sprouts here aren't the authentic "Matki"(brown small sized sprouts) used. Nonetheless the dish is packed with flavors. I loved the taste though the spice level was a little overboard for me. I recommend this dish for all who are willing to tangle their taste buds for some added spice. 6. Kalakhatta Drink- My trip down memory lane was having kalakhatta gola ( shaved ice on a stick) back home! When tasted this drink I was transported back to my memories.. Very tangy,cool & refreshing this a perfect drink in the hot summers is simply great. Also aids in digestion to the spice. A Must try. Overall,a great place for some close to home authentic foods. My every visit to the Bay Area I make sure stop by at this little eatery. It's such a nostalgic experience to dine in at this place with amazing street photography of local Mumbai street food hanging on the walls. Kheema pav, Kashmiri soda, vada pav and most of the chats are all spot on. A lazy evening with friends over some chat and chai at this place is like going back to growing up years back in India. I remember the last time I was here it was winter and the place was nice and cool inside. Today was a hot day and the people running the place decided to keep the doors open without any AC. It was hot inside. The dabeli I got last time was way better than the one I got today. The vada pav and misal pav were good. The poori bhaji we got for our daughter was OK..the bhaji was good but the puris were just flat and flaky. This is my first misal pav so I have nothing to compare it to..but I liked it...but I have had much better dabeli and better vada pav before. read more

One of the best restaurants in the Bay area for authentic Marathi/Mumbai food. Their misal pav (kolhapuri style) is one of the best misal I have ever had.
