IT'S FRIDAY, my favorite day of the week, because it means that the Munch Truck is in SF!! This is my ABSOLUTE favorite lunch spot in the city. I like to call their platters "homemade meals prepared by a loving grandmother." Trust me, I spent a summer in New Delhi and ate a lot of home cooked meals by my host, and Munch manages to exceed those standards. Every time I come here, I get the Vegetarian Combo for $14. It comes with three different veggie sides - today, there was potato, okra, and chickpeas. (The sides rotate. I've also had eggplant, tomatoes, and zucchini here, though chickpeas seem to be a staple.) I'm not a vegetarian, but if I could eat this every day, I gladly would become one. The FiDi food truck experience is far different than what you find among the hipsters at Off the Grid in Fort Mason or any other more casual venue. Self-important suits come to the FiDi trucks, and for heaven's sake, don't talk to them because they are too busy multi-tasking on their smartphones. And yes, I'm talking about women as much as men. They represent an equal-opportunity species of smug entitlement. Such is the case whenever I see this familiar navy blue Indian food truck parked on California at lunchtime during the week (photo: http://bit.ly/1QJi5Ln). The menu is surprisingly diverse for a food truck given the space constraints. I had the $10 Vegetarian Combo, which provides three veggie dishes, dal, rice and naan. The veggie dishes that day were Chana Masala (savory chick peas), Okra Bhaji (fried and curried okra) and boiled carrots from Riverdog Farms (photo: http://bit.ly/1MxBtY7). The okra was the best of the bunch with a spicy edge that cut through the sauce. I like how the owner makes a special point of using organic ingredients in his various stews. There was plenty of basmati rice to sop it up though the naan was a bit skimpy crumbled in the aluminium foil. It all came in an easily transportable covered tray that allowed me to avoid the suits. It's a treat, also in terms of calories and price (note a lot of the pictures with prices are dated). The combo is a great sampler - why choose when you can get them all?! Mine included: -Rice: 4 stars, I like that it had veggies (green beans, Lima beans, carrot - singular, haha) -Roti: 5 stars -Daal: 4 stars, I think? It was so itty bitty it was hard to tell. Given the size, it would have been great to instead have a little Halwa or rice pudding for a small sweet finish. -Eggplant: 5 stars, my fav of the veggie options with great flavor -Cabbage: 4 stars -Kidney beans: 3 stars Arriving close to opening at 11:30 made for a turn around of only a few minutes. Munch India parks their food truck every Tuesday near my workplace in Emeryville. I try to go eat there whenever possible as the food is high quality, really tasty, and satisfying. On the menu you will usually find 3 types of veg entrees, and 3 types of non-veg (1 chicken, 1 fish, 1 lamb) entrees. Each entree comes with rice (veggie pulav), 1 chapati(so glad they do chapati and not naan), daal, and raita. You can also do a combo plate that allows you to try all the veg/ non veg entrees. So far I have not been disappointed by anything I have ordered. The veg entrees are usually ~11-12$ and the non veg can range from ~12-18$ (can be a bit pricy if you choose the lamb/ fish). Oh and be ready to wait for 10-15 mins for your food to be ready (so it's guaranteed to be freshly prepared). Also - the dishes can be a bit oily (my only real complaint). The combos are great for someone who wants a little variety at lunch. Better than most brick-and-mortar Indian joints downtown, though Amber India is still king. Chicken Masala: Tasty chicken morsels in a creamy masala. Great for soaking up in roti and rice. The largest portion in the non-veg combo. Kadai Paneer: Super tasty dense cheese curds. A bit salty. A few thin tangy veggies were in the mix (peppers and onions?). About half the size as the chicken portion. Chana Masala: Standard chole, but with some nice yogurt and tamarind sauces on top. Tastes a bit like a chaat, except with just chickpeas. About half the size as the chicken portion. Dal: A bit bland, but that's what dal is. Just the right portion to hearty up some rice. Stumbled on this place for lunch the other day and was pleasantly surprised! I got a veg/non veg combo which came with chicken kebab, baigan (eggplant) masala, channa (garbanzo beans), dal (lentils) and some amazing rice. What I REALLY liked about this place is the fact that it was a complete meal, served on a thali-like compostable dish WITH a Roti!! there's something you don't regularly see at indian food trucks.... It felt like a home cooked meal almost as opposed to quick food. Everything tasted great and everyone at the office keep asking me repeatedly where I had gotten my food from. I had never seen this truck in the FiDi before. I think they are definitely onto something and I am officially following on twitter so I can know when they are around. My ONLY complaint is I thought it was a bit on the pricier side (~$16), but you do pay for what you get. Delicious indian food that goes beyond your standard chicken tikka masala, which everyone else is already doing. Basically if you want to feel like your at a sit down indian restaurant but with all the benefits that come from going to a food truck, you should go here. This is a hit food truck from our company location/building. Always gets a long line for the days it comes. Food is not cheap but one of the tastiest lunch I get every week. They used some very good spice mixes that makes you craved more. The Kabobs are rubbed generously and comes very tasty and juicy every time. The biryani is also good and on the goat curry is delicious when they offer it as a daily special. Expensive for lunch but very tasty and they use organic ingredients. If you don't buy they will still be sold out at least from our location as they always gets one of the longest lines among food trucks in our area. This food truck comes to my workplace every other week, and finally, I was able to try it! I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to Indian food, so I honestly couldn't pronounce anything on the menu without feeling like I'd offend someone... but all I know is that it was delicious! Unfortunately, when I had visited, it was the tail end of the lunch rush during a holiday week, so they had run out of rice, but the friendly worker took $1 off the food and offered more roti (tortilla-like Indian bread, like a thin naan). Service was definitely accommodating, and the man also explained the menu very well and didn't rush me in ordering even though I knew they were closing up soon. I ordered their chicken meatball dish and found it extremely flavorful! I loved how each portion was separated by the plastic container so to distinguish between the veggies, meat and sides. All the food had a wonderful spicy kick to it, which I thought brought it all together! Not sure if those who can't handle spice can eat this though. XD Although a bit pricey (as all food trucks are), I think the flavorful, spicy, and overall satisfying food here is totally worth it! I'd never heard of it, but as I walked by the truck on my way to get other food for lunch, it smelled too good to pass up! The food was really fresh and the spices made everything so delicious--way more than I expected. I got the murgh chop because I'd never heard of it, an anglo-indian dish of ground chicken filled potato croquettes. Crispy and delicious! The sides were all great too. A little more money than the cheapest downtown takeout lunch options, but completely worth it. No line, but one person ahead of me and I think I was in and out in 10 minutes. My coworkers and I **love** the food at Munch India. It's consistently delicious: meat dishes, vegetarian, and especially the fresh, high-quality fish. The family owners are friendly and accommodating. But the wait is simply too long. We genuinely can't fathom how it takes so long to prepare, since most curries, rice, dal, etc. are already pre-made. Unfortunately, more and more of our team are choosing to have lunch somewhere faster. The popularity of this truck is certainty a factor, but even considering this, a 45+ minute wait isn't really acceptable, since it makes lunch during work very inefficient. (We often order and go back in our building to work more before going back to pick up, but this still ends up wasting time.) Due to the mobile nature of food truck stands, its pretty hard to lock down where this one might be. For the last few weeks this has been parked at the corner of Sansome and California street in the Financial District of San Francisco. Its a pretty decent location because there just aren't many good Indian options in the area. The combinations plates come out to be around $10. I went with the vegetarian combo which came with the basmati rice, small piece of roti, channa masala, paneer kofta, and one other dish I don't know the name of. I thought it was a nice mix of flavors and a satisfying amount of food. It didn't change my life but I did enjoy it somewhat. Delicious Indian food clearly made with love. I got a combo with true cod masala, chana masala, and palak paneer ($14, comes with rice and roti bread) and everything was on point. The chef and her husband were both friendly and gracious, even letting me try a bunch of dishes before I decided what I was going to have. The chef is clearly extremely skilled - the food here has the perfect blends of spice and flavor and this might the best Indian food I've had in Marin! They somehow make even basic dishes like chana masala and aloo gobi taste amazing. It is clear that the couple that operates the truck really care about the quality of the food and service they provide. It is also very reasonably priced. I tried this food truck when it came near my house in Emeryville. I had an eye on this truck when I saw a long line in front of it during lunch time while walking around it. And when I eventually got around to trying it, the food totally exceeded my expectations. I tried the chicken malai kofta, which came with a side of kaali dal, rice and one roti. These guys are really something special. My wife and I happened by after running some errands near New Montgomery today and the food and feel was superb. I even made a point to swing by on my way back to work and had the opportunity to talk with the lovely owners for a minute and thank them. I have been eating at this truck when it comes to our complex for some time, and the food has generally been very good. Vegetarian items vary from assorted vegetables, to cauliflower, to beans, with rice and bread. Today, however, was an exception. The special item today was broiled lamb chops, which were some of the best lamb chops I have ever had anywhere. Although thinly sliced (and taking an extra 15 minutes to prepare), the lamb chops were juicy, and coated with an Indian herb mixture (don't have a clue other than part of it was green) that gave the lamb a truly unusual (slightly sweet, slightly spicy) flavor. I work in Emeryville and had seen the Munch India truck in the neighborhood but had never stopped. Last week I decided it was time to give it a try. I had the Tilapia Masala and a samosa- Oh my gosh the samosa was So. Good. The tilapia was perfectly cooked and full of flavor.
