Apna Chulha makes some of the most delicious, balanced North Indian food I've had in SF. We came in for dinner last night and really liked the lamb rogan josh -- fragrant with spices and not too heavy/oily -- and the aloo saag. The saag had a super rich, thick texture, superior to a lot of the more watery stuff you might find elsewhere. I also loved the gol gappe, aka pani puri, little crisps that you fill with a potato-onion mixture and a pour of sweet and salty chutney water. I do wish they had a second green/herb water, like I've had elsewhere, but it's really no big deal. Service was friendly and gracious throughout, both from servers and some staff who seemed more like owners/managers (I should've asked!) The only downside is the portion for price, it's not the best value. But I understand based on the quality of the food. I'm excited to come back for the $20 lunch buffet. Also, I'm crossing my fingers that Apna Chulha sticks around for a long time. Business was looking quite slow on a Wed night, which is maybe expected but always hard to experience as a small biz owner. Visited Apna Chulha to try out the lunch buffet and it was a good experience. The restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived, but by the time we left, it was busier and had a number of occupied tables. The restaurant is spacious with plenty of seating and a separate bar area. The lunch buffet is $19.99 before tax & tip and seemed to be a pretty fair price. Now for the lunch buffet, there was a good variety of both meat and veggie curries along with basmati rice and a few appetizers (pakoras, etc). I enjoyed the tandoori chicken, butter chicken, dal and a veggie curry with spiced potatoes and peas. The dal had a nice flavor and a little kick and was a bit spicy, but paired well with the rice. The staff also brought over fresh naan, which was pretty good. The pakoras weren't too good, a little too salty, but the chutney helped. Customer service was friendly and attentive, with staff checking in occasionally on if we needed anything or wanted a refill of naan. I will say I assumed the chai was included with the buffet, and totally missed the signage that it was an extra cost. So, it was a slight surprise when we got the check. Otherwise, it was a pleasant dining experience and I was glad to find a Indian restaurant with a lunch buffet available on a Sunday, as most places only offer a lunch buffet during the workweek (Monday to Friday). Such a great price for an AYCE lunch buffet for only $19.99! The restaurant itself wasn't that busy when we went for a weekend lunch, but the food was so great I really hope they get more customers in the future! The tables are big and the space is very clean. The server was super friendly and checked back with us regularly. I absolutely loved their fish dish and chicken curries. The curry was very buttery and the fish was a bit crispy. I also enjoyed the chai which the sweetness went well with the savory entrees. It would be nicer if they put labels for each dish. A lot of them had me guessing but you really can't go wrong - they're all delicious! The servers will patiently explain to you what each dish is if you ask though. This giant restaurant used to be a Tex Mex type of place, but with some minor adjustments it's now Indian. It's pretty bright and airy inside with high ceilings. I stopped by to ask about the buffet price and the manager(?) gave a warm welcome and encouraged us to stay. The place was mostly empty (unfortunately for him), but $25 for a buffet lunch? In this economy? Sure! There was a good variety of the Indian buffet classics and freshly-baked naan served at the table. Overall the food was fresh and pretty good, but not that punchy. I think they can up their spice level significantly and not scare anyone away. But overall, a decent and affordable lunch option among vanishing Indian buffet offerings in SF. read more

Loved the food & friendly service! Literally the best! We went to the bar next door after Diljit Dosanjh's concert and our big group was super hungry. We were all craving Indian food and somehow got so lucky that we stumbled upon Apna Chulha. They were closing up when we walked in past 1:30 AM. We asked if we could still order and they let us do a huge take out order. We were so glad they accommodated us last minute so thank you to the guy who took our order, helped make everything so fast and the young sardar who packed everything up with hand written notes on each to-go box. My sister wanted to try this place after reading some good reviews and the food was solid. I will say that the service was really slow (maybe because the place is newer or it's understaffed?), so we had to constantly flag down a waiter to help us. Some of the items were also forgotten about, but they all eventually made it to our table after a few reminders. My favorite was the Punjabi fried rice since it was super fragrant and it went well with both the curries. The fish pakora was hot and fresh, but I was expecting it to be more crispy. We also tried the goat cheese naan since we hadn't had one before, but it really didn't taste like goat cheese and the flavor was very subtle in general. The restaurant did give us some complimentary desserts of gulab jamun and kheer, which was a nice way to end the night. Can't beat $19.95 for AYCE Indian food! (During lunch time). The buffet selection had my favorite dishes including daal, samosas, butter chicken, pakoras, goat curry and more! The goat curry was my favorite, super tender and lots of bone to eat it off from. I feel like a goat curry at any other restaurant would've been like $50 on its own. I guess something was lapping my shoreline because a Yelp notice about this new spot intrigued me enough to pop over for lunch. It was formerly West of Pecos and a nice cavernous space to eat a chicken salad during COVID. Gratefully the new owners didn't crowd the space with more tables. I ordered the $7 Dal Soup and was immediately impressed that the potato chunks were not soggy. Came here with some friends to try this restaurant! We were looking to eat some Indian food, and saw this on Yelp! The ambiance is nice and I love the decorations! There were also additional decorations for Christmas, creating a festive feel. The service was a little slow, though likely because the restaurant was busy. For food, we ordered three portions of curry, and at first, we ordered one naan and paratha to share, but ended up needing to add on two more naan orders. Dropped by for a Sunday buffet. The restaurant is spacious and well lit, well decorated. There was one waiter who was very courteous and welcoming, and gave us free masala chai! The buffet overall has several good vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. My favorites were the chicken curry, potato-vegetable curry and naan. The only complaints we had was that the chicken was overcooked/dry and the salmon pakora was overly salted. The feedback was given to the owner and she said it will be used to improve the food in the future. The service was great as well. The owner offered us complimentary fresh naan and mango lassi, which were delicious to have with our meals. Another server constantly refilled our waters without us ever needing to ask. The minute we walked in the door were greeted like family. There's a nice full bar, large seating areas with a beautiful open kitchen. Really impressed by both the quality and value of this family-owned Indian spot in an otherwise very competitive segment along the Valencia corridor. There is no shortage of good Indian options in the area, but where Apna Chulha shines is as a fancier, sit-down option with super affordable prices! Perfect for a date night or if you are just looking for a nicer place to grab a bite without feeling too stuffy. I tried their Chicken Biryani, Saag Paneer, and Fish Pakora. Everything was amply portioned, well-seasoned, and full of flavor. I think my favorite was the Saag Paneer...this is a simple dish that really comes down to the execution, and I think they nail it. The saag tasted earthy, and a touch creamy, with the perfect consistency that wasn't too thin or greasy. The biryani had a good ratio of chicken-to-rice, and I asked for "very spicy," which was balanced with the rest of the nuanced flavor and not overwhelming. It comes with a side of raita, which cut nicely through the heat. Both dishes were definitely more of a northern Indian/Pakistani-style, if that is your thing. Each was $16. The Fish Pakora was good, and also a great value at $11 (they use salmon!), but not my favorite overall. I think something to do with how they breaded it reminded me of chicken nuggets. Again, not bad, but not my preference. I would probably skip that next time. They are still in soft-opening right now, so some things may change, but I definitely want to return to try more of the menu, particularly the tandoori dishes. The owner also mentioned they will be adding pizzas in the coming months! Also, not sure if it will continue, but they offered a complimentary rice pudding dessert "sample" that was also delicious, just the right amount of salty/sweet to whet your appetite for more! This place came highly recommended and for good reason! Best Indian food I've ever had. The owner was an absolute joy to speak to as well, a very humble gentleman! It is also walking distance from Delores park, it's about a 9 min walk. The ambiance of the restaurant is very welcoming! As soon as you arrive you are greeted with a smile!
