Update: The owner Jeremy reached out to me personally after this review and was a sincere guy who wanted to learn more and make things right - it was much appreciated. It sounds like we had a one off experience with an employee who hadn't been there long. I don't discourage folks from trying this place - I stand by my comment that you'd want the owner or the other regular barber. There were happy customers walking in and out. Like other reviewers have pointed out, I think this is a good place if you get the actual owner himself to cut your hair. I took my two boys in and a woman cut their hair - it took an abnormally long time (Muncy himself had gone through 5 customers in the next chair in the same amount of time) and my little guys had cuts on their necks and even behind their ears when they were done. I understand a little temporary redness at the neck line but this was pretty crazy. My 9 yr old got in the car and said "That was the most painful haircut I've ever had." My boys have been getting monthly cuts for years so they know the drill. Now this all said: they were decent haircuts in shape and style but it was 100% not worth the time and money, especially for the price I paid for the kids' cuts and the visible discomfort. If you are looking for a barber in the Newport/Middletown area look no further!!!! we all know how hard and painful it is to find a good barber when you move to a new area, this barber will hook you up right to begin with! I unfortunately went to multiple barbers prior to going to Muncys and was jacked up bad each time. Muncy's does a great haircut. Jeremy is particularly good although I can't speak for the two ladies who have chairs in his shop. I would give him 5 stars if I could just count on him more. Last month I waited 30 minutes for him to open on a Saturday. In that case it turned out one of his other barbers was supposed to open but didn't show. I can understand that but it happened again two Saturdays ago and I gave up after waiting 15 minutes after opening time and went and found a new barber. I understand life on the island is a bit slower but time is valuable and I prefer a shop I can count on to open on time. read more

I'm from out of town in the military, but I usually seek out a place that would give me a haircut that doesn't look so military. I stumbled upon Muncys via Yelp and I was not disappointed! Three of us needed haircuts and I let the other two guys go first. I got the chance to get my haircut from Dustin, who ironically lived in San Diego County for years before getting a job at Muncys. Seemed very promising! Great conversation and a great cut! Asked for a number 2 on the side with a good fade and to keep my faux hawk intact, but to cut it down a little. Hit totally did it right! Great place right close to Naval Station Newport, so I would personally come back again! I would say my other buddy wasn't as lucky as I was and ended up looking like a Marine when it was all said and done. Just like any place, make sure you are specific on what you do not want as well! If I remember right, this place was cash only as well! Muncy also highly recommended Rhea's next door. We will see how that goes! read more

Bummer, I was really hoping that I would get a great haircut. I recently moved to Newport and the reviews at Muncys made this barber an easy first choice to try. I was specific about a low fade and also stated not to cut much hair on the top as it will stand up. I even showed pictures of how my previous barber cut my hair. Needless to say the fade in the back is not very even and he also cut to much off the top. Here is to hoping the next 2 weeks goes by quickly so I can to grow my hair back out and get it fixed at another location. The haircut aside, everyone at the shop was extremely friendly. read more

I normally write reviews on restaurants. However this is one that definitely needs recognition. I stumbled on this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try since it was open post July 4th. There is lots of parking and the barber shop is nice and clean. I was fortunate enough to get a haircut from the owner, Jeremy. He's a master barber and have been in the business for 20+ years. There have been a handful of times in my life where I felt that had an excellent haircut. Jeremy met all of my requests to the tee. If you are in the Newport/Middletown area, come here. Overall bad experience. In town for a few weeks and needed a haircut. I didn't want to go to one of those nation wide name brand places we all know so I swung into Muncys based off local reviews. Female that nervously greeted me (unknown name due to lack of response when I introduce myself) was very aggressive with her sheers. Each time she lifted off to readjust and make a new cut she literally slammed them into my head. I didn't say anything hoping my hair wouldn't be screwed up, wrong! After asking her three times to "fade" my sides in due to an obvious line in the side I gave up. She didn't fade anything just bopped me on the head a few times with the clippers and called it good. Then came the top....... This is when it hit me she was new or I hope so. She cut the top with scissors, so nervously slow she wasn't making even cuts. On top of that take 1/8" off the top was closer to 1/2" choppy uneven wave. The worst part about it is the owner was 5' away and either didn't care or was oblivious to his surroundings. The haircut is so bad hopefully someone else can fix it without buzzing it all off and starting over. read more

Yelpers I won't steer you wrong... today I stepped inside of a cool little barbershop . I believe there were three chairs two barbers one male and one female. Lucky enough both of them had clients in their chairs and since I've never been here before why not observe who does the best job. They were both giving a fade, the owner Muncy was giving the Perfect Blend no exaggeration the female barber was struggling, actually it looked terrible. When the owner is here it's a great experience, however when the ladies are cutting I can't count on getting a cut since they will just tell you they are leaving and ask you to come back a different day, this regardless if you've been sitting there patiently waiting. Came in and sat down waited to get a cut, was told by a female barber that she hadn't eaten lunch and would be leaving to eat after finishing up with her current customer, not an issue having experienced this with other barber shops. She asked if I'd be willing to wait for the other female barber who was at lunch to get back, which I did. Once the other barber got back, both barbers discussed not staying and I was told to come back a different day. Keep in mind, according to their work hours, it's a Monday and supposed to be open until 5 PM, I was there waiting at 2 PM, what is going on for the remaining 3 hrs they were supposed to be open? I doubt the owner would be ok with the lack of reliability in work hours when he is not there. This is unacceptable and I will definitely not be a patron here ever again, just can't count on driving over just to be turned away. Clearly Muncy's other barbers don't care about how they represent the business and their affect on repeat customers. Consistency with a business is key and they lack in this area. read more

Well... I'm really disappointed in my haircut. My barber was female, and I felt comfortable as a female myself. I told her I wanted a fade down to a 2, as well as a little bit off the top. Mind you, I haven't had a haircut in over 3 months, and my hair was pretty shaggy, with the top coming down about a half-inch past my eyebrows. I explained to her that as a service member, I wanted the top cut to just above my eyebrows. She replied, "so about an inch." I said that would be fine. The cut took about an hour and a half. She did little to explain what she was doing, and by the time she turned me around to the mirror to finish up I knew it was too late. If she had gone any further I would have had no hair. I have about a half-inch left on the top, and is the shortest haircut I have ever had. Not at all what I asked for. I also asked her to leave my sideburns natural, and she went ahead and cut them diagonally. At the end, she also shaved way too high above my ear, and I have a half-inch of baldness above the ear. I was in shock. I paid her and I left. The back is too high as well, and I am considering trying to get it fixed, but I know that I would have to have it shaved down if I did, and I am a female. I chose the place because I thought it was one of the best. I am absolutely embarrassed and know that I will never go back there. I just hope my hair grows back fast, or I'll have to consider wearing a wig. VERY disappointing. read more
