A must try! The restaurant feels very homey and there were several families who were clearly regulars when I went- that's how you know the food is good! We had yucca, coconut shrimp, and crab cakes to start. Everything was delicious although the coconut shrimp was a little too fried for my liking. Their hot sauce is absolutely delicious, the right mix of flavor and heat. We got the mariscada for our entree. The stew came with plantain soup and rice, which was so good we got another portion. I visited Muqueca for the first time last night and was thoroughly impressed. While it's a no frills restaurants, it's super clean and the servers are excellent. I never had Brazilian food before and I appreciated our waitress's patient with our questions. They have a variety of drink options including beer, wine, juices and caipirinhas for reasonable prices. The signature dish, moqueca and other entrees are sizable. We split two dishes among three people and were stuffed! We opted for the Fish & Mussel moqueca, a signature seafood stew with cilantro, tomato and onion. It's also served with rice and pirao. The fish was fresh and the stew had plenty of flavor. I loved this dish! Additionally we tried a meat plate, the Feijoada Completa with black beans, pork, sausage and bacon. This comes with a side of collard greens, friend plantains, farofa and orange. While each meal was completely different the both had a lot of flavor, however if I returned I'd probably get a fish or shrimp moqueca If you like spicy sauces, be sure to ask for their hot sauce -- but be warned and have a water glass nearby... it's one of the spicier sauces I've tried recently. Lastly, we saved room for dessert. The coconut & tapioca pudding-like dessert was great for sharing and we also got a small chocolate truffle. Both were good, but the coconut & tapioca pudding was the best! To conclude, Muqueca is worth returning to for an authentic Brazilian meal. For starters, we ordered the Mandioca com Carne de Sol (Yucca and dried beef), and a side of plantains.  You ever go a restaurant and they ask if you would like hot sauce? Usually my first thought is "yea sure, I'll have some of your mild sauce". Listen, I LOVE heat. So let me tell you exactly how I got played with that hot sauce. I dipped a piece of yucca in the sauce expecting it to be a basic level of heat and I reach for my water after the heat kicked in - I LOVED IT ! If they sold bottles, I would have purchased one. I kept dipping the yucca and beef in both sauces, it was everything.  My friend and I ordered the shrimp muqueca : BOMB.com ! Honestly, everything was great between the food, customer service, and atmosphere, definitely recommend! P.S. parking is hard to find in Cambridge as most streets are permit parking. I don't think they include sugar in it so it may taste a bit plain.I like my drinks with sugar so most likely wont order that again. If you like Chinese Shabu Hot Pot or Korean's Tofu Chigae (that's how I would relate the stews here)- then you will love it HERE! It's been a while since I've dined at Muqueca. In fact, at my last visit, they were still located on the older smaller corner spot just a bit aways. I loved the food as always though. I couldn't resist getting my usual - the Mariscada $24.95 - which was still chock full of mussels and shrimp when we were starting to scrape the bottom, and was great with the rice, farofa, and plantain that came with it. We also tried the chicken strogonoff $13.95, which was tasty, but super creamy, and a tad salty - I couldn't do an entire meal of it, so it was a good thing we were sharing the two dishes. We enjoyed the humor of the dessert menu... while we doubted that we were born for the flan, we ordered it anyhow, as well as the yummy sounding manjar coco n tapioca. Each was $4.50 for a good sized slice. The flan was creamy dense and tasty. The tapioca dessert had textures going for it and a sweetness that was cut by the tapioca balls. I think I preferred the latter a tad. ***10/2012 visit*** So, they don't seat reservations till the whole party has arrived, but on the Sunday we went, that wasn't an issue since they never filled up completely. Tonight was my first time eating at Mu Que Ca restaurant. I saw it on PBS' Neighborhood Kitchens television show a few months ago, and was dying to try it out! I'm so happy that we went! The food was fantastic and service was on point! Our waiter gave us really great suggestions while we were making our decisions! My cocktail...Strawberry Caipirinha was gorgeous and delish! The fried plantains were out of this world! I hadn't had them since I visited Puerto Rico in 2003 and I was in heaven! My main dish Shrimp Bobó was so good! The waitstaff was super friendly and it had a family friendly atmosphere! It's difficult to go out to eat from time to time with a toddler, but they made us feel "right at home"! When our little tot wanted to walk around a bit, the waiter said to my husband who was trying to hold him back, "let him roam a little bit it's ok, we're not busy yet". That was nice! The outdoor patio is the perfect spot for dinner on a summer evening and the colorful picnic tables make the entire experience even more fun. We had much higher expectations than our experience turned out to be. Walked in on Tuesday night around 7pm, with 2-3 tables taken. The interior looked nice. Our server was Linda - not the most welcoming person, very presumptuous and conceited. She seemed to already have a plan for what we needed to get. Linda didn't even listen to the end of our order. I was almost afraid to give her an order, leaving alone asking for recommendations. Linda tried to upsell couple of dishes as well, which I would consider under regular circumstances, but not there. I did though get a fish and shrimp moqueca, instead of just fish which I ordered and everyone at our table heard that. Mind you, it's $4 more than a fish one. And I would have never ordered shrimp, as we have a severe shrimp allergy in our party. Obviously, I would have indicated we can't have shrimp, had anybody inquired about it. Nope, didn't happen. I'm glad nobody suffocated in that restaurant to date and they didn't have any law suits for trying to kill people by putting in their food severe allergens in order to gain extra $4. When I got my dish and saw shrimp, I was just so disappointed, as that dish took a long time to be prepared. Nobody came to check whether our food was ok. By that time, there were only 2 tables left in the restaurant. We also never got hot sauce although we asked for it repeatedly. Fried yucca and house salad were both good. You can't go wrong with fried yucca anywhere. Fish and chips were soft and soggy, bland. Fish was a real fish to their complement, I think haddock. Not some type of fish meal with almost no fish. 3.5 stars! I've only had Brazilian food a few times, so I'm not sure what the standards are. Objectively, this place wasn't terrible, but it wasn't stellar either. I ordered the Fish Muqueca, which came with flavored rice and fish stew/sauce (?). The Fish Muequeca itself came with onions, tomato, cilantro, and pieces of fish. The accompaniment fish stew/sauce was a bit slimy, but I was told to add it on top of the rice. The Fish Muqueca itself also had a strange slimy flavor when eating it, so I'm not sure if the fish wasn't fresh or if that is the nature of the dish. I was a bit disappointed in the stew since it looked so colorful/tasty! I also ordered a side of fried plantains, and man, that saved the day. They're super generous on their portion size, and they helped offset the sliminess of the Fish Muqueca. Sweet, lightly crispy, and perfect! Service was a bit slow, and we had to wave down the waiter multiple times even though we were 1 of 4 parties sitting inside. I lived in Brazil once upon a time. This place is totally legit. Not only the Bahian specialties, the feijoada is the real thing too. We tried the feijoada, the shrimp bobó, and a couple of flavors of moqueca, and it was all delicious. The only complaint is the caipirinhas are a bit too bitter. We tried calling several times in the afternoon to find out if we needed reservations but it kept ringing busy so when we finished our errand we called at 5 p and they said "come on in, no wait". Upon arrival, there was only one party in the restaurant. Our waitress came quickly to offer waters and answer any questions. We were tempted by the yucca and Portuguese sausage but decided to share the garden salad. I decided to try the fish and shrimp muqueca since it's one of their specialties and the hubby was debating the plantain lasagna. He was only being held back by the thought of calories in that dish but gave in. The salad was more than enough to share. Great mix of crunchy romaine, tomatoes, sliced green apples, hearts of palm, green peppers, corn and onions. Right amount of dressing too! Our entrees arrived shortly after we finished our salad and they looked as delicious as they tasted. Both were piping hot. The muqueca was loaded with fish and about 5 shrimp which were butterflied, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Both came with a side of rice and a puréed gravy accompanied the muqueca which was suggested as a topping to the stew and rice. I couldn't quite distinguish what was in the gravy but it was very good. The lasagna was excellent as well, very cheesy and sweet at the same time. The hubby was moaning in delight with each bite. We were shooting for dessert but we were stuffed, maybe next time. $49 excluding tip. Bring quarters for the parking meter before 6 p. Very friendly and attentive service. Muqueca is a fave in Cambridge without a doubt! Their signature stews named muquecas are delicious and the generous portion is perfect for sharing. An ideal meal with friends at muqueca involves one or two orders of the stew (served with rice and a dish sauce), side orders of the beans and plantains, a lasaña de banana for the table to share and tropical juices for all! The juices alone deserve tasting. I'm amazed that they have so many tropical and Amazonian fruit juices--they have flavors that I've only ever seen when living in Peru and Colombia. Favorites are the cupuacu and graviola, but they also have more common tropical flavors like mango and passion fruit. The lasaña de banana is also a major reason I keep coming back to Muqueca. It sounds odd, but the combo of the plantains and cheese is incredible, and a great option for vegetarians (who are not pescatarians) in the group. The service has been super friendly each time I've come, and they provide a true culinary immersion experience. Most times I've been, I've overheard most people ordering in Brazilian Portuguese and the waitstaff conversing in Portuguese as well. The colorful, sea-themed decor is lively, making it a great spot for celebratory meals. Finally, I have to give a shoutout to their lunch specials. My friend and I were looking for a place to grab dinner and catch up and we stumbled upon this restaurant on Yelp. The reviews were good and location convenient so we decided to give it a chance. And boy are we glad we did! Cambridge Street can be a pain to find convenient parking but thankfully I was able to find something not too far from the restaurant. Upon entering the restaurant was pretty empty and we were seated immediately (we came at around 630pm). We ordered the strawberry and passion fruit Caipirinhas and they were both refreshing with a hint a little kick, next time I will try the original. For appetizers we had the coconut shrimp (great seasoning and perfect for sharing) and the side of sweet plantains (very generous portion). Both appetizers were great and our entree came before we could finish! We shared the fish moqueca (size 1.5) and it came with 2 sides of not your average white rice (taste it you'll see!) and a fish sauce. First the moqueca comes in this lovely clay pot and is still bubbling as it is placed on your table. The fish was AMAZING! Fresh, tender and flakey and all of the Indian, African and Portuguese flavors combined perfectly. The fish sauce on the side is not to be forgotten...we added it to our rice and it was delightful. Beware: the homemade hot sauce is HOT but if you like hot it goes really well with the dish. The serving size was more than enough for 2 people and we had left overs. First time having Brazilian cuisine and I'm extremely satisfied with it. My personal favorite were their national dish and the fried red snapper (market price $25 as of Mar 18, 2018). The national dish came in a stone pot and it was still boiling hot for good 10-20minutes on our table (during this cold 25 F day)!!! As for the red snapper, it was fried just the right amount .. crispy and not greasy. Guilty as charged... I was discreetly picking on the skin to munch on but it was so crispy!! As for the appetizer, I highly recommend the Brazilian Patties and get only cod patties. We did half cod and half chicken but the cod was significant better. The chicken patties tasted like a fried ball of spiced up chicken salad. There were seven of us and we got four appetizers and four main dishes (roughly $23 per person) Originally, we weren't going to get the red snapper (so glad we got it because i absolutely loved it) until the waitress asked if we are sure we have ordered enough... i can tell you.. you don't need that much food because all dish is loaded with rice and plantains. We were their first customers but their restaurant was packed within the first hour. So i would recommend making a reservation ... or be their first customer of the day like us. read more

My husband said this was a really good place so he took me and some friends here. I ordered the feijoada completa....holy crap it was the saltiest dish I have ever eaten in my life. I kept giving it second chances and digging around to see if I could find a better spot that was less salty but I ended up just feeling disgusting and bloated by the end, with my mouth hurting. I read through some of the reviews and others have also commented on how salty the dish is, so I probably should have done a more careful reading before ordering the dish. Bleh. My dish was definitely not worth the money! I tried some of my husband's moqueca... I think the moquecas probably taste okay (based on what my very blunted taste buds could tell) which is why I still gave it a three star. read more

The place is cozy and the decor is different. I had tried the Brazilian drink "Caipirinha" before so we ordered that. I didn't know that it came in different flavors so I went for the Strawberry one. It was really good. Glad I tried it! My husband went for the lemon and he felt it a little tart. He also tried the passion fruit later and he liked it better. For appetizers, we got the Fried Yucca and Plantains. The Yucca didn't have any oil so I was really surprised. Both the dishes were good. We asked for the hot sauce and boy it was really HOTTT!!! I eat good amount of spicy food but I couldn't handle it. Please don't try it if you are not a fan of spicy stuff... For the main course we shared the tofu and plantain moqueca. It came with a side of rice. I liked the flavor of this dish. It was very fresh and had the perfect balance of spices. I wanted to try the dessert but we were soo full! The Muqueca was beautifully served in a clay pot. The flavors from this regional dish are rich and unlike anything found at other area Brazilian restaurants. The service was attentive and friendly. They patiently answered all our questions and made recommendations that were spot on. I finished with the passion fruit custard, easily the most exquisite custard I've ever had. I had a dream last night I was running on a beach towards a bowl of their plantains. Hmmmm.. true wuv. It was the total opposite of the serial killer raptors dream.. but that's neither here nor there. I came here a couple days ago and still love love love this place. I shared in a bowl of plaintains, Brazilian crab cake, mariscada, and shrimp&mussels moqueca. The crab cake was great, but I prefer the "breading" of traditional crab cakes. The mariscada, marked "A Must Try" on the menu was HEAVEN. Oh.. definitely my current favorite dish at Muqueca. An immensely enjoyable lunch with rockstar Elite Yuk L! And not just because of her sparkling personality... Dat fried yucca. And the moqueca sizzle. Their namesake dish consists hearty, flakey whitefish braised(?) tender and left to marinate in a bubbling stew of tomatoes, peppers and onions, served with a mound of rice and a starchy thick fish gravy on the side. The liquid is at once sour, citrusy, a tad piquant, and unctuous in all the right ways. A tom yum, minus cilantro and young coconut milk. Definitely fish sauce, maybe? It's a delectable mystery. The lunch portion is basically a half serving, and runs $12.50. You don't need more than this, Joey Chestnut. By no means should you do less. Get this. Get this now. "GET NOW!" - Ahnold But not before you start with the fried yucca ($6). I've had it elsewhere; I've never had it better. Yucca's one of those foodstuffs that's easy to fry dry, but not in this house. The dippers (including a fiery garlic-tomato-Brazilian red pepper sauce) are wonderful accompaniments, but this root is so unbelievable tender and creamy, it could be et on its own. Juices are blended to order, and my $5 Blue Caju (blueberries, cashew fruit, papaya) screamed summer. Then screamed again as I sucked it down. Mercilessly. Had a lovely dinner there with my parents after waiting in line for 45 long minutes (something that is apparently common at this establishment). I had never had Brazilian food before although I've had Portuguese and Spanish food before. I was familiar with linguiça and yucca but had never had muqueca - on the other hand I've had my fair share of caipirinhas. Muqueca is a dish which inspired the restaurants name and the specialty there; in a nutshell it's a stew, traditionally with seafood and herbs in it, with no water in it and cooked over a long period of time. Variations have since been created and I ordered the one with plantains and tofu as my entree. Before the entree I had linguiça and yucca as an appetizer, which came served with a side of a wonderful sauce of some sort. It was delicious. So was the caiparinha which was one of the best I've had since moving to Boston. The prices are perfect, the service friendly and prompt and despite the long lines, it was well worth it - a very enjoyable, flavorful and fun meal. I will definitely be having more muqueca at Muqueca in the future! My parents really enjoyed their meal as well, and especially my father who's been to Brazil many times for work and who said that this was pretty spot on. You can try to make reservations there but usually they'll still end up having you wait - they are victims of their success to be warned. Parking on Cambridge street usually isn't all that bad either but you can also walk from Lechmere fairly easily. read more

I've been meaning to try Muqueca for a long time but the place is always busy on weekends. I gave in and decided to try them by delivery. I ordered the Lasagne di Banane (plantain lasagna) which comes with a side of rice or salad. The lasagna was decadent and delicious. The best way to describe the dish is that fried sweet plantains were combined with a rich and creamy sauce and baked. Tasted like the Brazilian sweet version of an Italian baked tortellini dish. Definitely want to give them a try in-person and try other dishes. read more

In short: I loved their plantains, I loved their fried yuccas I loved everything, except for a misunderstanding. I wanted a vegetarian muqueca- Green Leafy TOFU symbol. Not an ALL veggie muqueca! Such great Brazilian food! They cook and serve their seafood "stews" in clay pots, with just the right blend of spices and tons of cilantro. Perfection! Our waiter knew the ingredients of all the dishes and had gluten and dairy free recommendations that turned out great. (Most of their food is gluten free, just ask! Stay away from their fried food if you cannot have dairy as it's soaked in milk before they bread it.) Service was fast and flawless. There is also a casual, low-key, family vibe: TVs are on, people chatting for a while after they are finished with their food, etc. Seems like a great place to hang out. My husband and I split the fried yucca (Mandioca Frita) with dried beef as our appetizer, and it was a great start to a perfect meal. We also had some mussel soup (Caldo de Sururu), also really delicious. Their cocktails are also great (they have a full bar). Then we had their signature dish Moqueca Completa, and since both of us ordered the same, it came in one large pot for sharing, with sides of rice, plantains, etc. It was the best seafood dish I had all week (in Connecticut and Boston). Such a perfect blend of fresh, delicious fish, shrimp, mussels, and calamari. We could only eat about a third of it, the portion was so big. We should probably have shared instead of ordering a ton of food, but we planned to take some home. Due to a mix-up in the kitchen they only packed up some things (rice and plantains - no moqueca!) and we didn't notice it until we were back in the hotel... No big deal, just check what's in your takeaway bag before you leave. :) Otherwise everything was perfect and we can't wait to go back when we head to the east coast again. read more

Tripe Stew is awesome everything else looks good. The portion was a bit small for $15.00 and I was looking forward to some pork belly in the stew which never materialized the waiter said it was cut in tiny pieces so I guess it dissolved. The taste was good and looking around me everyone else's table had beautiful food including this gigantic fried fish on the table in front of me the appetizers looked appetizing and so on I will come back to try some other things on the menu but it is a little pricey for simple comfort fare served here although not too pricey. read more
