Located on the 6th floor of MoMA, the Terrace Cafe has both an indoor cafeteria and an outdoor terrace. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a relaxing place to grab some refreshments and take a break from touring the galleries.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The menu has sandwiches, salads, appetizer-y light bites, desserts, and beverages (both alcoholic and non). The Lyonnaise salad looks simple but is unexpectedly excellent, with a tasty and mildly tangy dressing. The mac & cheese is cheesy enough with a nice panko crust. We also had the roast beef sandwich which came on a brioche bun and is not bad. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We managed to snag an outdoor table and were seated and served fairly quickly on a weekend, though it was the mid-afternoon and near neither lunch nor dinner hour so wasn't exceedingly crowded.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] "Lunner" or "dinch" is the best time to dine IMO!
This place is on the sixth floor of the Museum of Modern Arts(MoMA). It is good for a quick refreshment after roaming around the museum for the whole day. However, you need to invest some time off your art watching schedule since this is a sit and dine restaurant. The food is quite okayish and felt a bit higher on the price. We also grabbed a cup of hot chocolate, which was quite refreshing. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It also has a rooftop/open dining area which is great if you would like to hang out in the sun.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This place also has multiple charging points, so if your phone needs some juice, this is the place to be.
The prickly pear margarita was delicious, the salad was decent, but the reuben was a little dry for me. I would try this place again but order differently food-wise. Service was great and [[HIGHLIGHT]]it had great ambiance.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Definitely a nice place to take a break for lunch when exploring MoMA.
I came here during the celebration for an artist as he was having his opening at the MOMA. I have to say that the drinks were quite good and they actually had nonalcoholic choices for those who chose not to drink. They were very generous with their pores and I really appreciated that. I also love the fact that they had a lot of bites and that they were gluten-free. I found that out because there was one woman there, and I don't have her name, but she was so knowledgeable and helpful and was able to point me to the things that they would have that I could eat. I was so encouraged that I even ate caviar for the first time. I probably won't do it again, but I did like it. It's just that I have an egg thing and eggs kind of grossed me out. But I was willing to try it because I had confidence in this young woman and what they were passing around is hors d'oeuvres. My favorite was the squash one that was lovely. And they also had a passionfruit gummy, which was divine. I wish I could've gone home with a whole box of those. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambience was a bit dark, but it was not offputting. But it was kinda hard to see when people were speaking, however, I have a habit of being up close to action so I didn't bother me.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] And I could see people across the room and know who they were so it wasn't that bad. But it was a little dark for my taste. It did provide a nice contrast to all the light downstairs. But that's not something to complain about. I don't know if I would ever have a reason to come here again because it's not like a restaurant or anything, but if I ever have the peas, you're being invited to a place like this, I would be more than happy to go and attend and enjoy the drinks and hors d'oeuvres!
After a couple of hours of looking at beautiful artwork, my stomach began to grumble. My son and I decided to grab a little lunch. Located on the six floor of the MoMA museum this cafe is equally beautiful. As the name suggests, there is a terrace lined with tables and chairs for outdoor dining. What a slice of heaven in a concrete jungle! We were shown to our table by a most gracious hostess. Our server Pen, promptly greeted us shortly after we sat down. We started off with cocktails. Passion fruit margarita for him. White wine specifically Sauvignon Blanc, for me. I was surprised that there wasn't a Cabernet offered on the short wine list? However, they did offer a Malbec and Pinot Noir for those who prefer a red wine. I chose the tomato gazpacho with Maine lobster ceviche. Fried chicken sandwich with carrot and cabbage slaw appealed to my son's tastebuds. We throughly enjoyed our meals. My soup was tasty and contained good sized chunks of lobster. The fried chicken was tender and well seasoned. I did not have room for dessert. Although I asked for a dessert menu and was provided one. I decided a hot mint tea with honey would complete my meal. This is a Manhattan eatery, so the prices are in line with the area. The quality of the food and excellent attentive service in my opinion, are well worth the price point. That being said, if you're a member of MoMA you get a ten percent discount off your subtotal. The entire vibe of the place is warm, inviting and eclectic. I will happily return on my next visit
Exhausted after spending the morning and parts of the afternoon exploring the MoMA, we decided to grab lunch at the Terrace Cafe. Getting to the cafe from the lobby turned out to be a challenge, since you need to go up to the fifth floor, take a special escalator to the sixth floor, and navigate through the sixth floor to the cafe entrance. We had arrived with the lunch crowd and were seated at the last available table for a party of four. Upon getting settled, our server took good care of us and promptly put in our orders. I ordered the acorn squash salad for myself and grazed on the potato chips that my table ordered. The potato chips tasted fresh and were pleasantly crispy - they are served with sour cream and onion dip, but the chips were delicious on their own. The acorn squash salad, plated beautifully, wasn't as flavorful as I'd hoped, but it made for a light yet substantial meal. The cafe itself has a balcony and great views of the city below; on a day with milder weather, it would have been pleasant to dine outside.
First stop while visiting MoMA to fuel up before heading into the museum. Wasn't sure upon arrival if you can get there without going through the museum..and I think you maybe able to. We took the long way around. Had reservations for 11:30 and was there for about 1.5 hours. Very simple decor and the seating was nice. If it wasn't so hot outside would have enjoyed the patio seating...just too humid for that. By the time we left, they were pretty packed. Got the Mac & Cheese and the Roast Beef Sandwich with horseradish, cheddar and crispy onions. Both were delicious! Coffee was good too. Our server was nice as we took a few minutes to order as we were catching up. Loved the ability to use Apple Pay upon closing the check. Would recommend for a bite before or after the museum and to make a reservation.
A great and convenient spot if you want some beverages, light food, or even a meal after venturing through the MoMa. I got the latte which tasted fine. The scones for afternoon tea were quite delicious although quite small. Two scones came with the afternoon tea option offered for $12 for two scones and a coffee (of you get latte then additional $1). The staff was attentive and kind. I didn't try any of the meal options offered but the sandwiches and salads I saw on tables looked visually appetizing as the very least! Plenty of seating options available in terms of tables and counter seating along the wall.
A nice and much needed stop when I'm spending a day at MoMa. Bright and airy is the dining room. Lovely outside patio, weather permitting. Wonderful was our server on this most recent crowded weekday visit. Lunches arrived to table at a timely manner. No rush whatsoever after the aggravating & poorly managed front hostess stand. As for my "Grain Salad", fresh and delicious were the ingredients, though too sour was the dressing for my taste. Wiser I'll be, sticking to teatime, coffee and dessert only in my future visits. We decided to check this new Terrace 5 Bar and was absolutely disappointed. This person in a picture (supposed to be a host) need to be fired asap. He was extremely rude, inpatient, unprofessional and looked really angry. He couldn't even respond to our questions and we had to leave immediately due to his behavior. He should work somewhere in prison with this kinda behavior not in the upscale cafe in Moma. Horrible experience! Avoid at all costs if you dont want to ruin your day!

In addition, the wait staff were absolutely spectacular, Francis was my server and she was the absolute best!!! Would definitely do this again to try out the rest of the menu and drinks!
After enjoying the museum for hours, it was a nice break and respite to head up to this little cafe for a drink and a nice little view (you're surrounded by looming buildings, but it's still a decent experience if you're not from NYC). If you're with others, it could be a nice opportunity to enjoy a couple drinks/bites and discuss what you've seen, too. My Prosecco was a little overpriced, but whatever. Still tasty! Staff was friendly, from front of house to the server. My server, Austin, was particularly friendly, and we talked about different things. Great spot within the museum! Would love to come back and try some food offerings.
Truly excellent. The Terrace Cafe is fitting to its location. An exceptional collection should have a restaurant commensurate with the galleries. Courteous hostesses. Conversational service staff compliment the dining experience. Bold but uncomplicated plates. Seated quickly. The Drinks followed with equal speed. The menu is concise. Started with the eggplant dip. We followed with a grain and kale salad and a BLT. Everything really was perfect. It's nice to be able to enjoy the art, grab an on-site bite, and continue the Museum experience.

I honestly was expecting subpar food here because it's inside the museum and usually places like this aren't worth the money. However, I was super impressed. The appetizer olives tasted so flavorful and delicious. The Mediterranean tuna sandwich was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Bread was crispy on the outside and fresh on the inside. The salad dressing tasted homemade and fresh. The server was responsive. [[HIGHLIGHT]]And outside had amazing views of the building surrounding us.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I wish I would have saved room for dessert, but I'll have to check that out next time. read more

I had enjoyed dining at the Modern before so I had a feeling this place would be good too. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance is in line with the overall modern art aesthetic.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service is friendly and the menu is limited but was enough to tide us over until dinner. We got the Spanish queen olives, white bean hummus, potato chips (dip was good), stracciatella (the group favorite), carrot & butternut squash soup (generous portion), and quiche. We each got a drink, coffee, or tea and I got an iced chocolate (yumm serendipity frozen hot chocolate vibes). We were visiting MoMA, (hello Van Gogh Starry Night) and wanted to get something quick to eat before we ventured back out into the city, so we stopped at the Terrace Cafe. I ordered the grilled cheese with tomato dipping saude and he ordered the tomato soup and pasta. All of it was great and hit the spot. The place was busy and a little chaotic, but the food was ready pretty fast. All the tables were taken, so we sat at the way back along the long window where you could see out down into the street. read more
Although a longtime MoMA member, I've just been to this lovely, quiet cafe. The service is friendly and professional, attending to every need and empty glass. The gazpacho was slightly creamy and each spoonful had a bit of green pepper or muted onion. Drizzled with oil, the soup also contained sizable pieces of lobster that didn't exist in each bite but was sufficient to enjoy the soup and earn the name. I enjoy the other eating spot at MoMA, yet I will become a regular here as well. read more
Great spot to take a rest and fill up while at MoMA. Came here with a couple other friends on a Saturday afternoon and was seated right away. I got the BLT and the cold brew, which was just what I needed to reenergize myself to walk through the rest of the museum. The BLT was surprisingly good actually and had a healthy serving of bacon. If you're at MoMA and need a break, this is a great option! read more

I stopped by the Terrace Cafe for a lunch during my visit to the MoMA. For $42, you could choose two savory dishes and a dessert so that's what I did. I had the carrot soup and roast beef sandwich. The soup was delicious with a nice cinnamon flavor note. The soup was topped with cream and granola to add a flavor contrast. The roast beef sandwich was just okay. The bun it was served on wasn't particularly fresh or remarkable. I had a dessert of the chocolate cake and it was splendid. Service was fast and friendly. read more

This place is amazing. The manger and Mr. Kaiser gave us a pleasant experience. The food and service were the best. The coffee from Joe coffee was also great. Kudos to Mr Kaiser and his fellow coworkers. Bravo. read more
Visiting MoMA and needed a snack and a break. Terrace 5 was perfect. Clean, bright, inviting. We stayed inside due to rain/ cold, but others in coats enjoyed the actual terrace. Our waitress was the friendliest I've ever encountered. She was caring, knowledgeable, patient, intuitive. Bar staff gets involved if you order alcohol. They were on point. In regard to another review, we found the prices quite in line for a museum restaurant. $12 for a nice Chardonnay is reasonable. However, I do feel I overpaid for my sandwich as I feel it was misrepresented, and that is why only 4 stars. It was highlighted as lobster and prawns on a roll w/ celery aioli. Being the foodie I am, I'm pretty sure it was just the imitation crab stuff you can get at the grocery. I saw a fine chop of celery in the mix, and. . . Corn. Really nothing special on a lobster roll bun. Except for the adorable potato chips they make from fingerlings. Hubby enjoyed the corn soup with toasted wild rice atop. There were bits of tomato in it and a touch of micro greens, perhaps radish. I love micro greens. From perusing photos, clearly they're doing variations on a basic menu and doing it beautifully. We had a really enjoyable time. read more

Located inside MOMA this is a lovely cafe. We sat outside for lunch. It was naturally shaded by buildings. This cafe faces 53rd street. My son enjoyed the Mac n cheese. I had a cappuccino and the chocolate tart. It was very good. Definitely will be back. The interior is cute and will be nice in the winter time. read more

It took us a while to find this restaurant in MoMA. Make sure you take the north elevator next to the ticket office. The food serving size is perfect for 2-3 people. We ordered 2 small plates: chicken liver and eggplant. They were so savory and refreshing. I had salmon toast as my main dish, and loved it! We waited for about 30 mins, while we were walking around in the museum. Don't miss this cafe when you are in MoMA! read more

Had a WONDERFUL time here. Had he potato leek soup and it was beautiful and delicious. A glass of rose made this the quintessential NYC experience. I lived in NYC for 25 years and this is the first time to this cafe. I came because the sculpture garden was closed and I wanted to sit somewhere outside. What a view!! It was a great experience!! I know museum cafes like to be inventive and be different but this place was way too far out there. My mom and I were visiting the museum and wanted to have a quick bite to eat before viewing the exhibits. The menu is nothing but salads and weird items on toast. No hot soup, no sandwiches. Nothing savory for my picky mom to eat. She ended up eating a delicious peach melba sundae. I had the curry chicken salad. We both liked our meals though my flatbread was a bit greasy. But there really should be more options as not everyone eats salad. The restaurant was nicely decorated and they had a nice outdoor patio that over looked the sculpture garden. So if you are into out there food, definitely check this place out. But if you want a simple sandwich, its not for you. read more

I visited Terrace 5 upscale restaurant on the Fifth Floor of the Museum of Modern Art. When I arrived I reviewed the menu. I actually let the hostess seat me. The service was quick. I discussed the menu with my server. When she explained the menu to me and described the size of the portions, I apologized, stood up and left. I'm not the type of individual that pays these prices only to leave hungry. I found the food portion at the Cafe 2 to be satisfactory. I had the feeling the food at Terrace 5 was the same preparation process only disguised as high end by the fancy presentation! I haven't looked at the photos or reviews posted on this business listing on Yelp. I decided by the information I was provided at my table verbally. I needed to do more homework first. My fault, not theirs. Service was prompt and every employee polite. I just did not want to spend the money and be disappointed. I didn't want to take that chance. read more

Consistently good food. I eat here every time I am in NYC. The potato and leak soup was delicious. Also go the King Crab and Avocado on Toast. Fantastic! Views are great. Plus outstanding service from Graham. I love this place! read more
Location: Terrace 5 is located in New York City's Museum of Modern Art (MoMa). It's near the Andy Warhol's Campbell Soup prints which is the front of the cafe. Service: Service was wonderful, I had my water filled several times, but I noticed how crowded it can be so there was quite a bit of wait 30 minutes after I came. Food: The food is pricey, but most museum cafes are pricey too. I got the curry chicken salad on a bed of watercress ($18) and it was pretty tasty. Some of the watercress were oversized which made eating them a pain a little, but the curry chicken added such a nice creamy and spicey flavor to the salad. Stopped by the Terrace before our lovely experience at the MOMA. The menu is very small with only 8 "savory" items. The Mac and Cheese was inconsistent, with the majority of the cheese souped at the bottom and the noodles on the top without it. It's obvious that the Mac is not fresh. Also it needs salt. The lobster gazpacho was light, but lackluster in the flavor department. There wasn't really any flavor to it as the chunks within the purée consisted of cucumbers and celery. The endive salad was the best item we got, but in my opinion did not have enough of the toppings (blue cheese, pomegranate, pine nuts). The potato chips are their famed menu item but were nothing special. Overall a very unexciting experience for my taste buds. But the service and staff was great. read more

This is some of the best food at an art cafe I've ever had. Talk about great surprise. We went to the top of the museum and were starving. After looking at the menu we reluctantly decided to try. Wow. Talk about amazing. I'm tempted to give this a 5 it was that good. The menu was great, the service was fast and the food was delicious. I had a potato and leek soup with crispy lentils and it was divine. We went over the holidays and they made the design of a Christmas tree it was so cute. The soup was so good that I would like to go there again just to get it. My boyfriend had a chicken curry over rice and he loved it. It was flavorful and tender and we haven't had as good of food at many restaurants. The setting was beautiful and we both were shocked at how absolutely amazing this was. read more
