Was renting a temporary apartment in the area and come across The Comfort Diner. Mostly the reviews were good, but some people whined about their food lacking flavor. I ordered a rare burger with cheddar, lettuce and tomato for $14.00, it came with fries. First of all, their fries are fantastic. They came piping hot and stayed hot. The 1/2 pound burger was grilled between rare and medium-rare. It was perfect and flavorful. Even better was the staff, from the owner to the servers. I love a good diner. My favorite diner dish is a Hot Open Turkey Sandwich. Unfortunately The Comfort Diner doesn't have that on the menu. It was AMAZING. I'm usually not a fan of gravy on my food, but this platter was hearty, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. Special shoutout to the sweet, fresh biscuits -- chef's kiss! My brother ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes and The LEO -- a large platter loaded with lox, eggs, onions, home fries, and toast. Our server gave us a heads-up that the pancakes have a different consistency than traditional pancakes, and wow... they were some of the tastiest pancakes I've ever had. Sooo delicious! I can't imagine running a small diner in the middle of Manhattan. I've been here a couple of times now and the food is delicious and the meat in the omelette I got is always fresh and tasty. This diner was across from our hotel, so we decided to give it a try. It was nice and quiet, which was a great change of pace from the hustle and bustle of this city. I got a Reuben and my mom got mini burgers. Pros: the sweet potato fries were delicious, my mom loved her mini burgers and LOVED the mashed potatos. Oh man, it was a bummer to leave NYC on such a down note, but that's what we get for placing convenience over quality for our breakfast destination. Jamie W and I wanted to stick close to our hotel because the sidewalks were iced over with snow drifts embedded against buildings. Well, things started on a sour note when we were seated next to a mother and daughter who were having a loud and long exchange. The daughter tried to shush her, but mom was enraged about who knows what back in Queens. Welcome to New York City! Jamie was hoping to offset the squabble with the $16 Country Breakfast, which consisted of two scrambled eggs, two buttermilk biscuits, and a heaping side of white sausage gravy and grits (Photo 6). The eggs and gravy were OK, but the biscuits were stale tasting. I had the $16 Western Omelet which should've been a slam dunk with ham, peppers, and onions, but it was barely edible, so I subsisted on the decent home fries and sourdough toast (Photo 7). I don't know if the results were due to a faulty grill or a new cook or maybe we expected more. Judging from the extreme opinions about this place on Yelp, I'll go with my gut and find an alternative next time. It's an old school diner for sure and was exactly what we wanted. You feel like you are stepping back in time about 50 years. Subway tiles on the wall, old art adorns the walls and lighting sconces. Just a quirky fun little spot in Manhattan. We both grabbed soup and a sandwich. The split pea soup was good and both sandwiches were delicious. I had a grilled cheese and it was perfect. Sometimes simple done well is exactly what's called for. Perfect goldeen brown crust with a gooey American cheese inside. It hit the spot. service was great. They took care of everything we asked. The chicken on the other hand was mediocre. Fried well with good spices on the crust, but the meat was too thin and didn't have the spice flavors. I had the eggs Benedict... instead of Canadian bacon, it was made of bacon bacon! Maybe not as healthy (if eggs Benedict can ever be thought of as healthy), but it was very tasty, especially with a perfectly poached egg and sauce. Coffee was just okay. "A glass of milk" meant whole milk. Service was quick and friendly, the server called us "honey" and "my love" throughout. There was even an old man (the owner?) greeting customers. My 15 year old was confused about what was happening. Just goes to show things are different now. The decor is definitely dated and could be original. No frills. I'm not mad at it. I love me some good diner breakfast food! We decided to try this place out after the concierge at our hotel raved about the place, and we ended up enjoying it so much we ate there twice on our trip! This diner is locally owned and has been in business for over 80 years, so you know they're doing something right! When we walked in we had gotten there before it got busy, and were seated right away. After looking at the menu we decided to order the Pancakes, New Yorker, The Lox, Eggs, and Onions (second trip), and The All American (second trip). I am ABSOLUTELY a smoked salmon for breakfast now...especially after having the New Yorker. The combo of smoked salmon and capers was everything! My husband really enjoyed the pancakes as they weren't too thick, and loved the all American breakfast! I think our only complaint was the wait to get our orders taken, but the restaurant did get pretty hectic with how popular it is. The food more than made up for it. While we were waiting we were able to take in some of the interesting decor including the inappropriate children's book titles lol. Nestled in the storefronts near Grand Central - this was our second breakfast choice of the trip. The front of the building looks like the steel diners, and inside there is small tile flooring and a bar you can sit at. Parts of the interior are somewhat run down, from defunct signage, to the front counter where they used to check people out. There's not wrong with that the places that are more concerned with the food rather than the decor are some of my favorites. We were sat in a booth quickly and ordered the standard water and coffee. I opted for the cheese omelet adding bacon - it came with home fries. What I like about places like this is the homefries aren't the orange cubes that everyone uses - these are cut potatoes which are seasoned and cooked with peppers and onions. The only reason for the two stars was the people. They really do seem nice and genuine. I didn't have very high expectations as I needed to work and figured I get some food. It didn't have a long line out the door and it's a diner in NYC. I specifically asked if they had Oat milk and was told yes so I committed. No oat milk, and I got the last drop of almond milk left. Coffee wasn't great by any stretch. Ordered Avocado toast which comes with two poached eggs and home fries. I added a side of sausage for good measure. The avocado was terrible. It was sour and I have never had sour avocado. Dragged the eggs off the toast and basically had mediocre poached eggs with a side of sausage and home fries that seem to have a couple of days on them.
