    Red white and blue waffle!

Came here for a late breakfast. Very cool ambiance, throw back in time. Sat in a booth and just scanned the walls at the vintage items.. Great menu reasonably priced. Chose the red white and blue waffles! Food came quick and was very tasty! Service was great and attentive. Will be back!

This diner was across from our hotel, so we decided to give it a try. It was nice and quiet, which was a great change of pace from the hustle and bustle of this city. I got a Reuben and my mom got mini burgers. Pros: the sweet potato fries were delicious, my mom loved her mini burgers and LOVED the mashed potatos. Less than pro: the meat on the Rueben was so thick it made it tough to eat the sandwich. It was good, but really messy. It was also not the cleanest. Overall we would definitely come back!

Oh man, it was a bummer to leave NYC on such a down note, but that's what we get for placing convenience over quality for our breakfast destination. Jamie W and I wanted to stick close to our hotel because the sidewalks were iced over with snow drifts embedded against buildings. We just wanted to find a family run greasy spoon where we could get our calorific guilty pleasures. Now how could we go wrong with a place called The Comfort Diner? Well, things started on a sour note when we were seated next to a mother and daughter who were having a loud and long exchange. The daughter tried to shush her, but mom was enraged about who knows what back in Queens. Welcome to New York City! Jamie was hoping to offset the squabble with the $16 Country Breakfast, which consisted of two scrambled eggs, two buttermilk biscuits, and a heaping side of white sausage gravy and grits (Photo 6). The eggs and gravy were OK, but the biscuits were stale tasting. I had the $16 Western Omelet which should've been a slam dunk with ham, peppers, and onions, but it was barely edible, so I subsisted on the decent home fries and sourdough toast (Photo 7). I don't know if the results were due to a faulty grill or a new cook or maybe we expected more. Judging from the extreme opinions about this place on Yelp, I'll go with my gut and find an alternative next time. FOOD - 2 stars...unfortunately mediocre AMBIANCE - 1.5 stars...we needed a Cone of Silence SERVICE - 2 stars...they came and went TOTAL - 2 stars...no comfort here

The Comfort Diner - Yelp Review (5 stars) Just had the most heartwarming, delicious breakfast with my family at this hidden NYC gem and I'm still smiling! Location & Vibe: 5/5 Tucked right across from Grand Central, this classic 1950s-style diner feels like stepping into a time machine--in the best way. Retro chrome stools, checkered floors, autumn scarecrows on the counter, and that unmistakable "old New York" energy. Even on a chaotic travel day, it felt like a warm hug. Food: 5/5 Everything was perfect: * Caesar salad on a sunny yellow plate that somehow made it taste even fresher * Gooey tuna melt with extra cheese dripping over the edges (yes please) * Veggie omelette loaded with spinach, mushrooms, and feta * Kid-approved grilled cheese + fries and a vanilla milkshake that disappeared in 30 seconds flatPortions are huge, prices are honest, and every bite tasted like someone's mom was back there cooking with love. Service: 5/5 The staff treated my kids like their own grandbabies. Refills appeared before we asked, high-fives for the little ones, and they even packed extra fries "for the train ride." That kind of genuine kindness you rarely find anymore. Bonus points: * Spotless retro bathrooms * Super family-friendly (booster seats, kids menu, zero side-eye when the 6-year-old did her dramatic "I'm full... JK one more fry" routine) * Perfect pit-stop before catching Amtrak--literally rolled out happy and full straight to our gate. If you want real diner food made with real care, in a place that still feels like 1955 but with 2025 cleanliness, RUN here. We're already planning our next NYC trip around another breakfast at Comfort Diner. P.S. That orange juice in the photo? Fresh-squeezed. Fight me. TL;DR: Best diner experience we've had in years. 10/10 coming back every single trip. PSA:: Wyndham Guest gets 10%

Not my favorite diner in the city. Definitely very old school feel, but it's dirty and service is pretty bad. Food was surprisingly decent (great pancakes)

Ordered the breakfast set for approximately $18. For the amount of food I got, this felt a little overpriced. The pancakes were good, but nothing special. The sausage was a little too greasy for me, but the eggs were done well.

Came here for a quick breakfast and everything was delicious! We mainly just got your typical breakfast of eggs, potatoes, bacon! The people working were also very polite and it was perfect for what we needed.

This is where you wanna go for melt in your mouth lemon ricotta blueberry pancakes. Oh my gosh! They were so so good. Worth every penny. We also ordered the American breakfast which consisted two eggs, toast (we got sourdough!), and home fries for $12. We walked in at around 8am which was a good time to be there, but 20 minutes later it began to fill up and the one waitress on duty was snowed...so not the best experience service wise--the order came to us wrong; we asked for a warm cup of water and was given a cold bottle of water---but y'know, understanding the present situation helped keep everything positive for us. I'm hesitant to eat here again because, overall, things just felt so rushed and the prices are kinda high for your average diner. I came here specifically for these pancakes and they DID NOT DISAPPOINT.

After running a couple of errands while waiting for the table to be ready, we were seated outside at the patio after an hour and 45 minutes. We ordered the famous honey butter pancakes, the korean wings, and the breakfast sandwich with hash brown, scrambled eggs, and sausage. The honey butter pancakes were pretty good but kinda drenched in the butter that made it hard to finish. The korean wings were also alright but the batter to me was kinda thick and heavy and lacked crispiness. The best item we ordered was the breakfast sandwich with hashbrown, scrambled eggs, and sausage. I think the eggs are cooked with cheese, and as someone who typically does not eat cheese, I didn't mind it. I don't know if I'll be back again - I think the concept of an asian twist on the classic diner does sound intriguing but difficult to execute. I also wasn't a big fan of the wait time. If you typically like heavier, diner food then this spot might be the place for you!

It was our first time eating at a Friedman's location. It had a nice diner feel to it, with a mix of booths and tables. The brunch menu has a variety of breakfast items, salads, sandwiches and burgers, starters, and entrees (fish tacos, grain bowl, fried chicken). I like that several of the items are naturally gluten free, and some can be made gluten free by request. We decided to go with three breakfast items from the brunch menu: I got the shakshuka, my sister got the Nova Benny, and we got the lemon ricotta pancakes to share. All 3 dishes were great. The shashuka came with grilled ciabatta, perfect for dipping into the sunny side eggs and tomato sauce. My sister loved that the poached eggs and smoked salmon of the Nova Benny came on top of a crispy potato latke. The pancakes were fluffy and the lemon ricotta and lemon zest elevated their flavor. Our server was friendly and attentive, and he asked us if we had any allergies when he took our order. He came by several times to check on us and refill water. I would return to Friedman's when I'm in the Herald Square area, or check out one of their other locations in the city.

Fast forward to 2026 (where I'm finally not broke as hell), the day has finally come, and I am ecstatic about stepping foot into this diner that surprisingly is still standing in 2026. The inside certainly feels like a diner, but not quite the old-school dinginess that I'm used to--it's clean. Given that it was Sunday at noon, it was very crowded in there and mainly flooded with tourist groups, but a table opened up for us pretty quickly. For a NYC diner, the menu is certainly small - this is probably done to keep tables moving faster. I got the Pastrami Hash & Eggs and it was just overdone and super oily and dry--almost as if they just refried everything except the sunnyside egg. Not gonna lie, I was very disappointed, given that I had waited for so long to come here, only to get food that was an attempt to give the staleness another chance by refrying and reheating. I actually beat myself up a little the rest of the day for finishing the whole thing, knowing that the oversaltiness was flirting with opening up some high blood pressure. It was also not moderately priced by any means (was close to $30), but I know I'm helping pay for that Midtown and proximity to Central Park pricing. Not sure if I'll return, which saddens me, but also knowing that they're part of a conglomerate at Fireman Group (and still run independently in a sense) makes total sense
