At first I was wary signing my child up for Karate. My son has an array of special needs including autism and ADHD. My fear was that he would get lost in the shuffle and would either not make any progress or simply give up and want to stop going. I expressed these concerns up front before I took him in for orientation. I was assured this was not a problem. Wow! Was I in for a surprise! All the Sensei's at the dojo are nothing short of amazing! They are friendly, welcoming and professional. They exude confidence, project excitement and are obviously motivated to inspire every student to be the best they can be at all times. Their leadership and mentoring style has led to successful and ongoing progress for my son. In addition to receiving a free uniform and a reduced rate trial period, they offer a flexible schedule along with the option of one-on-on private lessons (at an additional fee) that we have used a handful of times to catch up when our son has struggled with certain aspects of the class. And their service doesn't stop at martial arts lessons. They offer competitions, themed summer camps, periodic Parents Night Off and impromptu parties open to siblings and sometimes friends whether or not they are taking classes at the dojo. As our son is entering his second year at MMAC Irondequoit, he is just as excited and motivated (if not more so) as he was on his first day. He is learning confidence, an increased level of self-esteem, respect and so much more! I cannot say enough good things about this school! My son started Kindergarten this year and was having a rough go of it. Classic "only child syndrome", he wants to be the center of attention and do what HE wants when he wants to at all times. With Kindergarten being more "rigid" than preschool, he was having a tough time transitioning. I thought karate may be the perfect thing for him to help with focus, discipline and body awareness. And it has! Sensei Mike is WONDERFUL with him. He is firm when he needs to be, but also understands my son's need to be "special" and gives him special jobs and helping roles and my son loves it. He really gets him to listen to him too and has gotten him to not be upset when he does something "wrong" and to really listen to an authority figure's explanation of why it wasn't the best choice. I will say, I was worried that it was all "fluff" during the 6-week trial period and they were just focusing so much attention on my son to "hook us in" to becoming members. I am now writing this AFTER we have become members and the senseis are just as invested in my son as they ever were. They will even send him personal video messages on days he is not quite himself and even on his birthday. They recognize that my son thrives on this and they really are focused on helping him be the best person he can be. I'm anxious to see where karate takes him in days, months and even years to come. His teacher already sees a difference in class. I'm so proud of my boy and it's so nice to see others in his corner too. When I searched for a dojo I was going on what my friends on Facebook told me to look for. Length of contract Cost of uniform (or free) Cost of classes/How many per week Belt structure I then searched online for a dojo that was close to home and Murray's came up. I set up an appointment to come in and give it a try. Now I'm an adult and I'm not in shape at all. I sat down with Sensei Mike and he asked me why I wanted to learn karate. I was honest and told him I was bipolar and I needed structure that I couldn't find at a gym. I also had been in the IDF many many years ago and thought this sort of training would be more in tune with what I was looking for (plus brushing up on self defense was a bonus!) I took my first class that day and even though it was a one on one, I watched the class I would be joining and I decided right then and there to sign up for the year. It was a bit intimidating be a white belt when everyone else in the class was either an advanced white belt or higher and in much better shape than I was but the instructors were with me all of the time so I could catch up on the basics. I had to miss quite a few classes because of the Jewish High Holidays and I had the option to get free private lessons to catch me up since I missed so many classes. Sadly I am moving across the country and have to say goodbye to a group of people who I've come to call my ninja family but I don't plan on stopping my training and I hope I can find a dojo that can fill the shoes of Murrays. read more

Like many people living a healthy life style is not always the easiest, especially when it comes to working out. I can force myself to go to the gym, find a workout buddy to motive me, but sometimes you find yourself always coming up short in getting the workout your body needs. I have tried multiple class type and always felt as though something was missing. I came across Murray's Kickboxing class online and decided to give it a try. A month later I find myself getting a great workout that motivates me each class. I never thought I would find a place like Murray's, the people who join all have the same goals in mind. No one judges you, but instead everyone supports you. We have fun every class and we also get the benefit of having such amazing coaches. These people are truly here to help, each and every class. They will continue to monitor you, make sure you are doing all the moves correctly, so you don't end up hurt and are still receiving all the class benefits. It is such a pleasure and honor to be a part of the Murrays Marital Arts family! We signed our 4 yr old son up for classes a couple months ago. I wasn't sure what to expect, and was a little nervous because of his "strong personality" and his very high energy level. I can honestly say now that I am overly impressed with how this program has helped my son not only improve his level of focus, but the amount of respect he has for the Sensei's. In just a few classes I noticed a change. He tends to bore easily and needs to have his mind challenged in order to remain focused and engaged. This program does exactly that. Our family loves Murry's Martial Arts! All four of my children took karate lessons here and three earned their black belt in varying degrees. The fourth earned a brown belt. My children learned many skills among them are self-confidence, discipline, determination, self control, the importance of fitness, self-defense, I could go on and on!! We were always treated fairly and respectfully at the dojo and our children developed new friendships while in class. I took kickboxing classes here for many years. We enrolled our son in MMAC during one of their awesome promotions. The class was actually a Christmas gift for him. It didn't take us long to know that this is right where our little guy belongs. I have been going to kickboxing classes for a while now and I love it. The teachers are great motivators who know what they are doing.
