Time to update my 2016 review ....I have always have been a fan of this place. They can pack in the people in here and be on a long waiting line with the food quality being just as good as you would always expect. My favorite meal is the chicken pablano and the steak sandwich. French fries are also made fresh and always cooked to perfection. My wife and many of her friends loOove the deep fried green peppers with powdered sugar...not for me, sorry. This place arguably has the best salads in town. I loOove the Deb's Garlic Salad - but you had better love garlic to have this one. My wife and I often split this one. I have been a patron for over 30 years. There is not a classier, elegant and affordable place in town to go to have a nice quiet dinner. I still go on a weekly basis. The staff is fantastic! The food is always on point and exactly what you order. The prices are incredibly affordable compared to other places in town. The menu is incredibly diverse. As is their beer selection. Which I am a very avid local beer consumer and they have some great local beers. A simple Phillies cheesesteak and fries with the beer of course is a great lunch. My wife dined at Murry's 18 years ago with her family and remembered the powder sugar covered fried sweet peppers. We were in the area biking the Katy Trail and decided to see if Murry's was still open. It was and the wait was 45 minutes on a Wednesday evening! Clearly a local icon. The sugared peppers are still on the menu along with a full menu of delicious foods. The service was attentive and the order-to-table turn fast. The prices are extremely reasonable. I tried Murrys for the first time this summer and was very impressed. Everything from the mood lighting to the live music to the service is amazing. Must try Brock's Green Pepper Rings as an appetizer -- it's fried green pepper with powdered sugar. Does not sound like it would be as good as it tastes, but trust me it's amazing! As far as desserts, the gooey butter cake is to die for. The food is all reasonably priced, I was actually surprised to find that the place was not more expensive. Brought my roommates back here for a birthday dinner and the food was just as good the second time around. read more

My daughter's fav place in COMO. My first time here and must agree with her. The pork tenderloin sandwich was excellent and the best fries I had in years. Wife loved the french dip and daughter enjoyed her usual Philly cheesesteak. Atmosphere is calm and relaxing with great jazz playing over the sound system. Yes I never give one star. But I feel must for this place. I've never really been a fan and really the only good thing I can say about Murry's is that it is constantly OK. But for some reason every one loves it here and it is the place to go in Columbia. Waiting 45 minutes to get a table next to the band for OK food just isn't for me, especially in Columbia! I asked my girlfriend who LOVES blue cheese how the Blue Cheese Chip Bread was...."it's alright." Here are some of the notes I made while eating: steak was fatty, shrimp very much a pain in the arse to eat, water never refilled (and we were drinking wine....), no separate checks. I could, no SHOULD go on. But I won't. I just don't understand why everyone loves this place when they've clearly fooled everyone on the name alone. Another positive is that you can steal wifi from the Upper Crust while you wait. When one of the positives about a place includes another place, that can't be good. read more

It's impossible for me to deny at this point in my "career" that I'm not a foodie. Let me tell you, this is my favorite restaurant. Ever. Out of anywhere. There isn't a single thing on the menu that isn't shank-someone good. Back in my early teens, it used to be all about the cheese bread, the onion rings, the steak sandwich. Let me tell you, it's still about the cheese bread and the onion rings--but as an adult I'm even more appreciative of the menu. Their green pepper rings are -to die for.- The Cajun hot or cold shrimp is so good--I always steal it off my Mom's plate. The ahi tuna is big enough to split and always seared exactly to perfection--and they have no idea how to make a bad salad or side. Did I mention the cheese bread? Oh, I did? Eat the cheese bread. Then order more and eat it again. The desserts are fair, though I almost never have room. I will say that their flourless chocolate cake they call "The Black Beast" will be one of the best desserts of your life. Lastly, their wine list is nothing to sneeze about--though expensive (hey, it's the Midwest). Go. Just go. Go now. Go often. And live jazz on Fridays! read more

Murry's has been doing its thing for years and years. I used to frequent this club/restaurant in med school/residency, both as a patron and as a musician, and this past weekend, had a chance to do both again. Much has changed - in mostly good ways. They have expanded their capacity from back in the day, so they can accommodate more people - this is a very good thing. Their food is good - not 'healthy eats', but definitely tasty. I had fried oysters which were quite good, and their salads are great (I had the Murry's special) and huge. Although I'm not a drinker, they have a good selection of beers and wines. The bad? They are so popular that the wait time can be north of an hour at peak eating time (7-8pm on a Fri/Sat). If you don't mind the wait, then you're golden. Just expect that. The place clears out some after dinner, and then it's more of a jazz/hanging out crowd - there to drink, have fun, and enjoy good music. But one of the truly great things about Murry's is that continue to keep jazz alive in Columbia, MO - and just in general. They feature local professionals regularly - Tom Andes, Ken Kehner, and many others. And they ALSO have a series of national talent that comes to town. This past Sunday, they featured Joey Calderazzo for two shows - YES, freaking JOEY CALDERAZZO. If you're not a jazzer, you don't care (or you can pretend.... Jack Johnson or something). If you are, then you'll know he's one of the top 5 jazz pianists in the world right now. Way cool. I had a good experience with service, but granted, I was also a musician on the night I went. Well I'm glad the place wasn't as crowded on a Monday night as the other reviewers were saying. Here's my thoughts on the food: the fried peppers with powdered sugar were tasty but too much for just two of us; the Philly Steak was very good and the beef they use is delicious; the Grilled Cheese sandwich had all kinds of veggies on it and my daughter (who is rather picky) really liked it. We also had a side of French fries - they were very good. Sadly, we can't comment on the desserts. They looked good up on the board - but we were too stuffed to indulge. ;) read more

When I was going to school at Mizzou, this was my place to splurge. I dont care if I had $5 left in my account, I was going to find some way to eat there at least once a week. My goal was to try everything on the menu at least once. I only got 1/4 of the way there before I graduated and everytime we pass through there I want to stop for dinner! I usually got the steak sandwich since it was cheaper than an actual steak but that's basically all that it was. Frogs legs are a must. The best part is that they get most of their food and produce from local farmers. Fresh, in season and TASTY. I am giving this restaurant two stars only because it has good beer and it can protect you from the elements. Overall, the food choices are extremely limited, they are served with too much oil, fat and salt. Even the salads are served with too much cheese and too much dressing. The beer selection was limited, but there were some good local brewery selections. On this particular night, our server was extremely inattentive, and we actually had to almost trip her to get her to stop at our table after being MIA for 15+ minute stretches. If you are looking for a date whom you might not be able to make out his/her features or hear what they're saying, this place is for you. However, if you would like to be able to hear who you are sitting with and be able to at least make out the whites of their eyes, I would recommend going somewhere else. read more

Recently revisited this Columbia staple during Homecoming and was not disappointed. It was about an hour long wait, but that is not unexpected on a football Friday especially during Homecoming. We started our meal off with some chicken livers and the fried eggplant. Both were very delicious (if not entirely healthy). I ordered the ahi tuna (excellent), and my companions had the pork medallions (dinner special) and the steak sandwich. The pork was very nice, but I must recommend the steak sandwich to anyone looking for a big piece of meat ;-) It was basically a huge filet with a couple of pieces of "bread" as garnish. It seems to be a great value if you want steak but don't want to pay for the entree cuts. Overall a very good place for a better than usual dinner in a college town. Check them out. read more

Murry's is like this magical oasis in Columbia on a football Saturday. I've been there a number of times, but it's never been so busy that I had to wait. That is truly a miracle, especially for a place that is so well regarded. Hey, I'm not complaining. The chicken philly is awesome, and I sometimes have a hard time getting away from ordering that. The last time I went, I had the steak 'sandwich,' which, as others have indicated, is just a nice steak on a couple of pieces of toast. There's no way to really eat it as a sandwich, which makes the lettuce, pickles and onions that come with it a little weird. The mashed potatoes are wonderful, and they have a very good wine selection. My expectations for service in Columbia are always a little lower than everywhere else, but the service at Murry's is generally better than average. I can see how it would get busy on a weekend night with a different crowd than those of us just looking for a bite before a football game, but for the times I'm usually there, it's a great respite with great food away from the crowds downtown. read more

Few times in life you find places that provide comfort. Murry's is one of those places for me. Since I moved to Columbia, seven years ago, Murry's has been my spot- my date spot, my girls' night out spot, my treat myself spot. The food never disappoints. I can be a single-issue voter when it comes to regular dining, but I trust Murry's because Murry's has yet to disappoint. Even if I have ever had a dish in that time that I wasn't crazy about, I know I can count on Murry's to deliver with every other dish and in other aspect. The service? It's just good ol' fashioned, knowledgable, get your food out while it's hot, timely service. I like that about Murry's. No mess, no fuss, just good service with a smile. Not much to it. Murry's is a dimly lit, lively little place that you can count on for a delicious, quality meal at a great a la carte prices! Downtown can keep its Flat Branch and Addison's. For locals who want good food from a locally owned establishment, Murry's is it. While the location isn't the most obvious and parking can be a pain, this is what makes Murry's charming and unassuming (and, let's be honest, keeps some of the downtown crowd out). A local's fav spot - it's an american restaurant with jazz music. The restaurant was packed when I walked in at 8 PM. I went to Murry's for dinner - had some fried oysters and fillet mignon - nothing fancy however food was great! I had a J Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon reasonably priced at $5. The prices were reasonable and it looked like a family favorite joint. For dessert I had the 'Death by chocolate' it was a bar of chocolate ganache with toasted nuts and cream - simple but delicious. Favorite place for a chill date, especially late night. I haven't been able to catch the jazz band/piano players but they have live music every Saturday night. I haven't had a bad meal anytime I've come. Fried oysters are my favorite along with the pastrami sandwich. Buffalo wings are huge and perfectly spicy. Service is decent but the last time I was there my server seemed annoyed or rushed with answering questions. Murry's was not what I expected at all. It's very casual, HUGE inside, and a little crowded. The first time I tried to go here for dinner on a Thursday at 5pm, and there was a 45 minute wait. I finally did get in without any wait on a Saturday night at 9pm. They serve dinner until midnight, which is awesome, and they have a live band (piano, stand-up bass, jazz drum, and some brass instrument). It was really fun and very reasonable, price-wise. The food was good, but the menu wasn't. The menu says things like "Chicken", "Steak", etc. under entrees... and that's it. It seems like it really caters to regulars who already know what the chicken dish is. But if you have food allergies or just dislikes, you'll spend a lot of time talking to the waitress to figure out what's in the entrees. Also, the entrees are ONLY the "chicken" or "steak"; you need to order any sides extra. The mashed potatoes are DELICIOUS, and let's just say those green pepper rings are something else! read more
