I've driven past this place so many times and never stopped. The wife decided to bring us here on the way home from a Memorial Day Festival and what a great idea it was! Ok so I've been on a bit of a DEN hot dog kick as of late. Some I have found have been fair to OK at best. Service and attention to prep and service details have been the real issues. It's not that hard, it's not that complicated, it's not that unattainable to have great dogs prepped and served right in the DEN metro area. In NY, CHI, BOS, MIA and STL they do it. In LA they do it in storefronts, off street trucks and even on the sidewalks from shopping carts - which for some reason are the best. Even in "forward thinking" and incredibly hot dog competitive SEA and SF they do it. This last week I visited Mustard's Last Stand on Uniuversity adjacent to DU while doing some consulting work nearby. Mustard's Last Stand is a true hot dog joint. Nothing fancy, nothing cheap, inexpensive and no over the top menu. Just a true hot dog house with a common Chicago style menu. High quality ingredients only. Via alleyway access, parked in back behind the building next to the grease pit. VERY limited spaces due to the share with other business that surround the lot. Only other readily functional/legal parking is on the street. Mustard's space is nothing more than an early 1950-ish era home converted into a storefront. Stepped in at about 12:30 in the brisk early afternoon this past THU. Couple of patrons at tables inside chowing down on what looked like an Italian beef sandwich and a dog with sauerkraut. Both had a pile of fries in their baskets. A mother with 3 kids in tow were already ordering as if this was old hat for them. I think they were regulars. Scanned the on-the-wall menu that was obviously printed in sectional fashion by an older version of an MS Paint program on a Windows machine from the 90's... on an inkjet. Decided on the basic classic Chicago Dog as a combo with small fries and a 20 oz drink. * sniff - sniff * What's that I smell? Something spicy? Something comforting? To quote that young actress guest judging on an old episode if iron Chef; "I have smelled this before, but not like this". Asked the guy behind the counter 'what's cooking in the pot?' on their counter view able kitchen stove. "Chili" he said. Mmmmm. Had to try out their chili. So before I could analyze the situation any further I blurted out "And I'll have a chili cheese dog too with mustard and onions". "Oh you want it Coney Island Style" he responded. "Yep" I said. Paid and sat down at a table counter that overlooked busy University Blvd out front. I watched all the foot and car traffic buzzing by. Before I knew it my order was ready and my name called. Walked up to the counter and picked up my heavily laden tray and returned to my seat. At my seating counter, there were bottles of ketchup and yellow mustard available along with napkins and the usual suspects of salt/pepper shakers. The Chicago dog was a perfect proper example of what I get in CHI. Proper skin-on Vienna Beef dogs in a proper poppy seeded bun with all the proper toppings. Classic and downright great enjoyment when you are jonesing for the authentic experience. Hot, soft, snapping and fresh. I was a tad sad when it was gone. The Chili cheese dog with added mustard and onions was very good as well. Knife and forked this one as it just made more sense given the amount of chili on top. Now let's talk about that chili that lured me into ordering this... very good, almost too good to put on a dog. Would be excellent as well ladled over a sliced open bag of Frito's topped with onions and cheese. Interesting difference though between this chili and the other chili I have experienced on hot dogs - this one had pinto and kidney beans in it. Don't mistake this call-out as being a negative one - quite the opposite. In this case, beans in the chili on a dog was a smart idea in texture. The chili was seasoned perfectly to co-exist with the seasoning Vienna puts into their dogs. Paired correctly, the combination is still very flavorful and satisfying without being too salty - which has been my too common experience. Their in-house made chili matched up quite well and was not at all too spicy. I like someone thought about this and didn't just open a can of Dennision's and call it a (dog) day. Fries. Thank goodness someone can make fresh hand-cut french fries crispy and cooked correctly without making them dark to the point of almost being burned. I think it's a good idea to offer them in more than two sizes as well. Little fries for those who just want a few or for kids is a great idea - but they still offer the large which for me, would be too large no matter how good their are. I would bump the review up to 5 stars if parking was a bit easier and the overall condition of the place was a bit better kept (grease and dust collecting on the metal chrome bun racks giving them a severe dull appearance). Overall, this is somewhere I would go out of my way when the craving of a proper dog is running rampant - which is happening more and more these days... read more

This is a university Blvd staple. It's the perfect little mom and pop shop for the best polish sausage and kraut you can find in Denver. I had not visited for many many years, but tonight (New Year's Day) we stopped in after walking the blossoms of lights at the botanical gardens. We were pleased that they were open, there was parking aplenty, the crew was cheerful and the food (I'm happy to report) is as good as I remember! My 8 year old son says his burger was the best burger he's ever had! If you knew this kid, you'd understand how big of a compliment that is! We have eaten at Mustard's by DU for many years. The rest of my family enjoys burgers and fries, so always order that. My go-to has been the tuna steak sandwich - delicious. We stopped there the other night and although the tuna steak was still posted on the menu, I was told that they no longer serve it. I needed a quick substitute, so ordered the smoked German bratwurst. It came out late (some problem in the kitchen) and was really dried out. Not likely to go back, too bad. read more

Very satisfied with eating here, the dine-in is still closed, but they have a large patio out front! The X-Large Italian is so big, I couldn't even finish it, and it went great with their fries & chili. The service was really friendly and they nailed my pick-up time, perfectly. Since moving to Colorado, I've heard about this place and driven by it several times. Today, after a long work day, I decided to treat myself, and stopped on the way home. I got the 1/4 lb. jumbo char dog with onions, and a side of their fries. The stop was well worth it--the meat was grilled just right, and the fries had an unusual spiciness to them. I'm still committed to my Weight Watchers program, so I counted this as an early dinner. Most expensive meal I've eaten in... maybe forever. Parked in their lot thinking I would kill two birds with one stone and deposit some money into my account before grabbing lunch (otherwise I would have not been able to buy said lunch). Went to the bank, then to Mustards to get food and then walked out to an empty parking space. There was a weasily looking kid with an ICP shirt and a safety vest who said that "the tow truck driver saw me walk away and towed me," which I'm sure is his way of avoiding confrontation. The towing company is not listed, they weren't answering their phones and the kid did not know their address, even though he is their employee. Went back to Mustards and I was told that "they don't control the lot." Which might be true on a day to day basis, but they also hire the company that does control it. I was scouting the DU area as a possible place for my future relocation. I wanted to see what was in the area so my 9 year-old, Caiden, and I set out to do some exploring. After driving around the DU, Swedish and Gultch area, we decided to get a bite. It was a very difficult decision, but Mustards Last Stand edged out Fuhgeddaboutit Pizza (Oh, and don't for a second think I have forgotten about you Fuhgeddaboutit...). We went inside and you immediately get hit with a funky vibe. It kinda reminded me of the Bahamas, where there were these laid back guys inside just chilling and serving dogs. We ordered a few (I am a traditional ketchup and mustard on my dog kinda guy, Caiden opted for some cheese)... We went outside and grabbed a booth. As we enjoyed our people watching along University Blvd, and participated in an increasingly intense round of "Slug Bug", they called my name and off I went to fetch some dogs. I didn't understand the hype around Chicago dogs until two years ago when I finally partook of one on their native soil. It was the last day of a bachelor party, the previous two leaving us equal parts exhausted and hungover. The edge of a Midwest summer was thankfully dulled by the lake, but that took nothing from the oasis-like quality of the hotdog stand that delivered us from over-partied blues to almost-feeling-like-a-normal-person-again territory. I was instantly and wholly converted to the One True Hotdog camp, knowing that finding its equal outside of its home city would not be easy. Years of searching later and here we are. I hardly dared to believe it myself, but it's true: Mustard's makes a mean, legitimate Chicago dog. I considered that maybe my memory had been dulled with time, but I had the incredible fortune of dining with a former Chicagoan who gave Mustard's his stamp of approval. So, yes - the Chicago dog here is amazing. It has the peppers and everything and oh man I wish I had another one RIGHT NOW. The fries were also very good but I can't vouch for much else on the menu. Really, I don't know if I'll ever feel the need to. The place has about the same feel as a hotdog stand with the amenities of a restaurant, so don't expect anything too fancy. Finally stopped in today since I was in the neighborhood with some time on my hands. First things first, the Sox stuff on the wall has to go. There are only 3 White Sox fans in Chicago, and this guy has to be one of them? The Chicago style hot dog was pretty good. I would have liked a bit more snap to the dog itself, and there's no relish, but overall it's passable for the real thing. The Italian Beef was really good, the bread was perfect, the giardanera was excellent with some good kick, and the bottom of the bun had the perfect soggy texture one should look for in an Italian Beef. I got the small which is well, really small and it still cost $4+. Overall, a good way to experience the foods of the motherland, although the price is a bit steep and the parking can be tough to find. I went here yesterday afternoon absolutely CRAVING an Italian beef sandwich. I had not eaten all day and was so excited to eat one. So I decided to go to a Chicago style hot dog stand and order an Itailian beef. I was expected authentic Chicago food, but boy was I wrong. I get to the counter and my boyfriend orders a Chicago dog. The old man at the register says very rudely, "and what would you like on it?" We were both shocked and honestly should have left at that point. If you do not know what comes on a Chicago style hot dog, you should not be working at a Chicago style hot dog place. Neither of us have had ever had to explain what going onto of a Chicago dog. He added, "we don't put celery salt on, you have to add it yourself." He also asked if he wanted sauerkraut on it! Are you kidding me?!! Sauerkraut does not go on a Chicago style hot dog! We thought next he was going to ask if he wanted ketchup. He was very rude the whole time, he could have at least politely asked what he wanted as toppings. I ordered the medium or standard size Italian beef sandwich. We also ordered fries. When we received our food, I thought they served me the small size sandwich. It was puny and had barely any meat on it. I complained and the cook took my sandwich and added more ingredients on it. In front of me, the other worker was like to the cook "what are you doing?" The cook replied, "they complained, so I am fixing it". Really? Do you need to have this conversation in front of me? What happened next was the worst part of it all. When the cook added more ingredients to my sandwich, he pulled pre sliced beef out of a plastic bag. Authentic Italian beef should be marinating in the gravy at all times and left on a hot burner. The meat was precooked and left in a cooler (I assume now it started as frozen). He threw it on the grill for not more than a minute or two. The sandwich that was reserved to me had cold beef on top. Ew!!!!! I paid for cold precooked beef. I tried to eat my sandwich, but I was so disgusted by the bagged meat. I honestly wishes I went across the street and paid $8 for a Philly Cheese Steak. The only good thing about our meal was the fries. My boyfriends hot dog was puny as well and looked really gross. He got a larger and better looking hot dog for $2 from a street hot dog stand in downtown Denver the day before. In total we spent $20 on garbage food (besides the fries) and got treated rudely by the staff. The only nice employee was the cook, and I feel bad that he has to be around the other staff working there. I had to go down the street and spend $5 on two huge and delicious slices of pizza after I left this place, because my meal was uneditable and I was soooo unsatisfied. Don't waste your money here. You had me at Vienna Beef. I love Colorado, but sometimes I miss my hometown city of Chicago. This is the place that I come when I need a little piece of home. The Chicago dog is perfect down to the famous lack of ketchup style and the ever so soft steamed poppy bun. The neon green relish put a huge smile on my face and brought me back to Sox games at Comisky (long before the days of US Cellular Ballpark). My favorite part in addition to the real Vienna Beef dogs, is Mustard's Last Stands french fries!!!! Yumm, fresh cut, greasy, and crunchy with the skin still on. First of all: They do NOT have the Uncannily Neon Green Relish that is the centerpoint of a Chicago Dog. So I won't be reviewing a true Chicago Dog here. I'll just relay my experience and let you decide on your own. This is another one of those places you want to like. It's a roadside shack that serves dogs 'n fries at semi-reasonable prices. It's got character. And hey: they're HOT DOGS. When you get a craving for a good tubesteak, it's any port in a storm, right? Nah. Their dogs did taste of beefy goodness. There was some 'snap' to the casing. But the "Chicago" toppings: Meh. Like I said, the mission neon relish schmear. And the bun, which should have been steamed to meld-the-dog-and-toppings-together perfection, with some sear on the edge. These weren't. Just your typical Dog-Bun. Not that the dogs were bad-tasting. They weren't. They just weren't anything special. Not Chicago Dogs, either. Beefy Tubesteak does not a Chicago Dog Make. So why the 2 star rating? This was the only thing we had eaten all day. Later that night, we were quite efficiently beginning our 2-Day Intense Weight-Loss Regimen, alternating which end of our bodies was praying to the Porcelain Gods. And for the following 3 days, following a diet of Saltless Saltines, Chicken Stock, and Gatorade. Needless to say, we won't be giving Mustard's a chance for redemption. read more

Mustard's Last Stand has been doing it all right ways since they opened, sometime in history, with a mission: To share the Vienna Beef gospel of Chicago with the Mile-High City. A nice hot-dog stand. Read that again: A. Nice. Hot dog. Stand. Though it really is more than a stand; it's got four walls! And its own parking lot! And places to sit! There, (thankfully?), are the only differences from any vendor you'd see on Addison near the Friendly Confines. The staff is fun and the food is well. Don't be surprised if you pick up the long 'a' sound while you're there, because it really doesn't get more authentic than this unless you're in the 312 to the 847 area codes. The joint's got a ramp for those sporting four wheels, the proper facilities, and as I said before, indoor seating (though limited and it might be more fun to eat it out of doors.) Mustard's is a great experience for those who are homesick or are looking for a good 'dog or Polish and want it done up right without having to drive a thousand miles. Pros: - Vienna Beef - Fries were good - Cool Chicago stuff on the walls without overdoing it Cons: - No neon green relish - The dog was too small for the bun - The bun wasn't anything special - Vegetarian menu at a hot dog joint (c'mon, really? I wouldn't go to a vegetarian joint looking for a hot dog.) Final Verdict: - Good, but not great. An acceptable substitute for a Chicago dog while living out west. Dear Mustard's Last Stand Corn Dog, I love you. My co-workers had mentioned this magnificent establishment for lunch one day and I decided to tag along. Upon entering the building, I was surrounded by DU weirdos and I frantically searched for something to order as the line was moving along quickly. Although everything on the menu looked delicious, something very special in particular caught my eye. The corn dog. I hadn't had a corn dog in let's see, possibly a decade? Something about a corn dog sounded so amazing to me at the time. It was like when I locked eyes with the menu item, I knew it was meant to be. I preceded to order the corny dog with a side of fries and cheese sauce. (That cheese sauce tho...) and waited for the future joy of my life to be battered and fried to perfection. Let's just skip to the good part shall we? Once I made it back to my work station, I unwrapped the paper, revealing the golden brown cornbready shell wrapped around the meaty dog. I dipped the dog in mustard, took a bite and wow...it was fate! We are obviously meant to be, forever together in deep fried deliciousness. I am not from Chicago but hanker to know what the Chicago dog is all about. The other places I tried it left me kinda wondering. Mustard's Last Stand finally made it clear to me -- delicious! And reasonably priced too, compared to what other places charge for a Chicago dog. As I left, I asked about the chili dog, which costs about twice as much as a Chicago dog. Turns out they make their own vegetarian chili for these dogs. I tried a sample; it might be nice, but that is just not hot dog chili to me. (I grew up in NC and have distinct ideas about what hot dog chili should be. Very few places come close at all, though some are tolerable. Unfortunately, not many places in NC turn out the old-school chili these days either. Johnson's Chili, which is sold frozen at King Soopers and other groceries, comes close but still doesn't earn a cigar.) Ah, but I digress. Mustard's Last Stand II was a location and food stand I had hoped I would love. You see I am a vegetarian and thus it is (1) a little weird for me to eat anything that looks like meat and (2) hard to find good vegetarian food. My girly friend, who is also a veggie, and I swung by Mustard's after house shopping for her. We both ordered the Vegetarian Hot Dog and shared an order of Vegetarian Chili Cheese Fries. I ordered my dog with mustard, onions, and relish. The first two I like but the relish was not something I would order again. I don't even know how to explain why I didn't like it; I just didn't. As for the Chili Cheese Fries they were good; not exceptional but good. The one big plus (for me)? They have Ginger Ale out of the fountain! I love Ginger Ale.
