Having driven by this little vintage store front on Market Street hundreds of times, it never occurred to me to see what they have to offer, since I don't have much of a sweet tooth. But when my mom requested buttercream candies for Mother's Day, I decided to visit their website. The website lists their bountiful candy selection, but you'll need to call to order. Seventeen dollars and one day later, I had a pound of butter creams handed to me through the passenger window of my SUV. My mom is a cancer patient. She weighs 90 lbs. and eats like a bird. She ate the whole pound of butter creams (minus the one I tried) in two days. The one I ate was definitely delicious:-) read more

Growing up, my mother talked about coming here with her grandmother when she'd visit Louisville, and I wouldn't miss a trip to take my kids if we were anywhere even close! On Saturday, we were in Lexington (from Atlanta), and our GPS had us arriving 3 minutes past closing time. We called to see if we could order something over the phone, and they very kindly agreed. Well, the highway was under construction, and while we took a painfully slow but beautiful (de)tour of the city, and they waited for us! Entering the store one takes a step back in time, and indeed, the store has been in operation since 1920! The beautiful glass and wooden displays, the pictures that illustrate the history of the business, and of course, a plethora of candy and popcorn goodness! I was amazed at the selection! The sweet lady at the counter immediately offered me free samples and assisted me with selecting the perfect chocolatey gift for a special person. Muth's Candy is like going back in time. When I walk in I get the sense that Muth's has been making candy the same way for a long time. The modjeskas and bourbon balls and caramels and taffy and chocolates and other confections are the same as what I would have found if I had walked through Muth's door when I was five years old ... or even when my parents were five years old. And considering Muth's has been making confections since 1921, you can bet they have perfected it! I love seeing the modjeskas -- my favorite of Muth's -- each delicately wrapped in paper. This Louisville specialty features a marshmallow with a creamy caramel center. Fun fact: It was created in Louisville by Anton Busath, who named it for Helena Modjeska, a famous Polish actress who appeared in Louisville several time in the 1880's. If you get nothing else at Muth's, grab a modjeska ... or 20. This shop is small but filled with more treats than you first realize when walking in. And the store itself seems to be stuck in time as well. But this is the only thing I don't like about Muth's. The racks, shelves and cases are likely the same as they've had for decades, with sun-faded signs. Considering the cases are set up in front of the shelves, it can be hard to see what's on the shelves. And they never have music playing. Maybe I'm just so used to hearing music in other stores, but I find this jarring. I've noticed on more than one occasion that you can clearly hear the old, harsh tube lights in the ceiling buzzing more than anything else. I know that's a weird thing to remember, but the silence makes browsing awkward, especially when I'm the only one in the store, with the clerk. I become very cognizant of time, and it hurries me along perhaps faster than I would otherwise. I just want to make over this spot. Some changes could be made to make it easier and more comfortable to browse and to showcase items better while still keeping the old-timey feel. Either way, the candies are delicious, and I suppose that's the most important part after all. read more

I love Muth's! The shop is like stepping back in time to an old school candy shop. I love going in and looking at all of the delicious confections behind the counters. My favorite item is the Modjeska, which is a marshmallow dipped in caramel. Before moving to Louisville I had never heard of these little delights, but now they are one of my favorite candies ever! Muth's is our new Easter Tradition. Our family usually looks to another candy maker to fill our Easter baskets. However, they closed their manufacturing down, so we had to look elsewhere. We live nowhere near Kentucky, think as far west as you can go in the lower 48. But we read amazing reviews about their candy and really wanted to support a small business, so Muth's it was. How much do you love chocolate? I really love it! My introduction to true chocolate was when my Dad went to Belgium and he brought back a box of Leonidas. I was 12 and had grown up with the typical Hershey's and Mars stuff. Leonidas was like stepping into a whole new world of melt in your mouth magic. Since then I've been to the Ethel M factory and (RIP) Martine's chocolate store in Bloomingdales. But I didn't think that a little candy store in Louisville could ever beat what I'd come to think was the best chocolate in the world. Wrong! A few years ago a friend gave me my first Modjeska. It's a handmade marshmallow wrapped in a thin shell of perfect buttery caramel. Dear God, where have you been all my life? The angels sang as this blissful sweet treat made love to my tongue! Today I tried their cherry cordials for the first time. Why did I do this? I've ruined myself forever. I like to bite off the bottom shell and tongue out the filling, and yes, I know this review is bordering on pornographic...but I don't care! How much do you love chocolate, I ask again? This is such a little gem with a lengthy history. I stopped by to pickup some bourbon barrels for a few friends to try. It was nice to see an ipad based cashier in such an old establish, a nice mix of old with new. The staff was very helpful in the selection of candies. Candy is delicious from this nostalgic Louisville spot. Their welcome wagon and customer service is in great need of an overhaul. It's sad to me that this really cool gem has such rude people running the show. I ordered party favors from them (250+) for a corporate holiday party. My order was over $600. Never again. The older woman who took my order was gruff and irritated with me immediately. I called them 2 weeks before my order was due to confirm the order and discuss pick up. I talked to another equally rude young man who told me they were busy and 'you'll get your order when you get it'. Just what a party planner wants to hear. I love how nostalgic you immediately feel as soon as you step in. It's a very old school shop with little individually wrapped goodies. I wish I had got name but i was feeling spontaneous and tried a bag of tiny sour hearts. It looks like a left over Valentine day special. Nonetheless, They are addictive. Now I'm afraid I'll never be able to get them anywhere else or even there, ever again. They're chewy but not sticky, and the sour kick you a bit just so you can enjoy the sweet center. We also got a bag of gummies and chocolate espresso beans. They were good, nothing extravagant but good. I'm mostly happy about the price. All three bags of candies came out to $5. I cannot complain. I love supporting local shops and I'm glad to have found this gem. read more

I had been on a hunt in Indianapolis for caramel apples for Thanksgiving. Since I was driving from Indy to TN, I decided to look in Louisville, and that's how I found Muth's. I called and placed an order for three apples. I was a little nervous about the pickup because I had my dog with me. However, parking was right in front of the building, which was super convenient. I went in and ended up buying a whole bag of additional goodies. All kinds of candies fill the store and you can't help but keep adding stuff to your pile! I got sugar free bridge mix (for my diabetic grandmother), ribbon candy, peanut butter/chocolate squares, and a few other things. The real star was the caramel apple. I've had many caramel apples throughout my life but those were on another level. Holy moly. The caramel was thick (but not too thick or sticky). The apple was fresh. Seriously the best caramel apple I've ever had in my life. Both my mom and grandma agreed. The peanut butter square was SO good, and I'm not convinced the sugar free bridge mix was actually sugar free...it was just too tasty. I've been given a strict order from family that I'm not allowed to visit again unless I have Muth's with me! read more

Modjeska's! They are Fantastic Chocolate Covered Caramel Marshmallow Bites. Some of my favorite chocolates ever....... The dark chocolate is of superior quality, it reminds of Parisian Chocolatiers. Muth's reminds me of trips to Strawbridge & Clothier's candy department with my grandmother. It's a small shop lined with cases and candy of all types. I purchased a bag of chocolate covered raisin clusters (mixed dark and milk chocolate) and some bourbon balls. My MIL bought black walnut brittle and couldn't stop raving. The prices are very reasonable (I paid less than $8) and the staff was very friendly. They even offered to sell me bourbon balls without the fancy gift box at a cheaper price. This is a great place to visit when you're downtown and an even better place to take out-of-town visitors. We were looking for some of the best candy in the world and we googled it. Muth's candy store in Kentucky came up, so we investigated. We then put an order in, and in no time at all the candy arrived safe and sound in California. We couldn't be happier!!! The candies are as described...so delicious!!! We ordered a variety of cremes (my favorite), and my husband ordered the turtles, and he is so pleased with your candies. We also ordered the brittle, two kinds, and they're wonderful. The next order will be to Muth's, and we've samples candies from around the world.
