My boyfriend and I took a weekend trip to Boston and were looking for a local diner and this place turned out to be perfect. We went on a Saturday morning and it was pretty packed which is always a sign that it should be pretty good and it was! It looks pretty small from the outside but trust me you won't regret eating there. I ordered an egg white omelette with cheese which came with home fries and your choice of toast (I chose wheat toast) and it was delicious! My boyfriend also ordered a ham and cheese omelette with home fries and toast - he said it was "above average" quality haha. Okay so the food was great and what was even better were the prices. My coworkers and I ordered breakfast from this spot recently. I ordered the "western" breakfast sandwich on a bagel. It was the best breakfast sandwich I had for $3.95. It wasn't small either. But instead I got the #1 Southie Omelette (corned beef hash and Vermont cheddar). He got the Spinach Tomato Swiss Omelette. My corned beef hash was the best I've had in boston. The home fries were solid hunks of potatoes as well, not too salty or burnt. The coffee was standard diner coffee, can't say much about it. The ambiance is great. Having breakfast at 9am on a weekday, I was sitting with folks from the Boston Fire Dept, Boston Police, and National Park Service. A few hipsters, a few Southie locals. We were in the area while traveling and wanted a good breakfast place - Yelp led us here! We walked in around 11:30 mid-week and not a soul was in the place which kind of shocked us considering the reviews. However, I think we were between breakfast and lunch because a few tables sat around noon. Anyhow, we ordered a bacon, egg, & cheese sandwich on a "bulkie" (we aren't from the area and had to ask what a bulkie was) and an egg white veggie omelette. The sandwich was delicious with crispy bacon, soft roll on the outside but a great grilled crisp on the inside. The eggs were cooked perfectly. They made the home fries as a side for the sandwich with no onions. The omelette was equally delicious. It was huge and fully loaded with peppers, onions, broccoli, mushrooms, tomatoes, and we added cheddar cheese! All of the veggies were fresh! The rye toast on the side was good and the home fries with onions were yummmmmy! They were flavorful and soft yet crispy (perfectly browned). Oh, and the coffee was good too! Bottomless! Super cute little diner on the corner of Grove and Main Street. It's not a far walk for me, so I have gone there a few times. The portions are large for the price! If it's busy on a weekend morning and I can't get a seat, I'll call for take out, walk to Dunks for an iced tea and wait 10 minutes outside for my food in the good weather. As far as "greasy" food goes...it is to be expected. This is a diner (by definition) we are talking about; not some fancy joint in downtown Boston. They typically use butter on most food items to bake or cook them. I would suggest trying it if you are looking for breakfast on the main drag. Breuggers is usually slammed and incredibly loud, and unless you want a dry nuked/burnt bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel from Dunks, this is a better choice. Plus, supporting local businesses in towns like Melrose is important, especially if you live in town. It's a great way to get to know people and make connections. read more

They've only been in town for a little while, but this is already my favorite morning spot. I'm a relatively recent convert to veganism, so as you'd expect, eating out has gotten a little tougher. I can always grab a bagel or something from Whole Foods, but dine-in breakfast is really hard, because nearly everything has eggs and/or butter. Enter my heroes at My Diner! They have a vegan menu section! It's not huge, but it doesn't really need to be. All I'm really looking for is something that's not oatmeal & a fruit cup - not that those are bad, but that's not what I go to a diner for. They have both savory (tofu scramble, vegan bacon) and sweet (vegan waffle) options available, so you have choices no matter your mood. My go-to so far has been the tofu scramble with Daiya cheese & veggies. Simply put, it's frickin' delicious. It's clear that the staff here (a couple of whom are vegan themselves) know what they're doing when making the items on the vegan menu. And really, that on its own would be enough. Here's the thing though - the staff here really really cares about the little details. For instance, the tofu scramble comes with toast & home fries. They always ask if you are OK with Earth Balance or if you'd rather the toast come dry. They double-check that they've grabbed the right (dairy free) cheese for your dish. They're really great about making sure that nothing animal ends up on your vegan plate, and they seem happy to do it. It's the kind of place that makes you feel like you want to come back, and I will definitely come back again and again. Just thinking about breakfast here makes me smile. This little gem is a great breakfast place! The corn muffin and turkey hash were both home made and DELICIOUS! The home fries were done as ordered (extra crispy!) and my tea was nice and hot! My friend got the eggs benny and was pleasantly surprised when they gave him 3 eggs ( the way it should be!). He was asked several times if he wanted his coffee topped off and this was all served with a smile! I'm definitely going back for lunch. Like Jeremy W, we too pass by this place all the time and say "We should check it out". So, we finally stopped in yesterday - which coincidentally also happened to be the day of St. Patrick's Day parade. I think every cop in Boston was eating breakfast here first before setting out to work parade control. The place was full of them in their neon yellow POLICE jackets and ear pieces. I had never seen so many cops in one place before. Anyway, my omelet was okay. My feta wasn't melted - I think it was added as an after thought. I wasn't surprised though. This isn't exactly the kind of place you think would even offer feta cheese. Home fries are good. Coffee is bad in that way that all diner coffee is. Tabasco on the table - that's always a good thing. Service was quick and personable enough. The inside of this place is exactly what you'd expect from the outside. Awesome little diner in Southie. Its small and crowded, but the food makes up for it. They offer a ton of selections and everyone I was with enjoyed theres a lot. The prices were super low and the only really knock was the service was painfully slow. The waitresses were more interested in chatting with the regulars then actually serving the food. The french toast and pancakes were very good although the portions were way too big. The linguica was very good and I enjoyed that much better than the bacon. One of my friends got the homemade turkey hash and said it was amazing. So I will have to try that next time I go. read more

We came in for an early breakfast after picking up family from Logan Airport (bonus: it's literally 10 minutes from the airport!). We had your basic breakfast staples: eggs, bacon, home fries, toast, pancakes and french toast. The portions were very generous and for four adults we spent $23 before tip. We had our 12 month old son with us and there was a highchair available. Although it is a small restaurant, we had no trouble accommodating the high chair at our table. The Farmer's Special is enough food for anyone. Eggs, bacon, sausage, homefries, and pancakes. Seriously? This place is your standard diner. The eggs come cooked as you ask, and the grill has clearly killed many, many chickens in its time. The bacon is well done when you ask for it to be well done. I really can't find anything good, or bad to say about this place, it's perfect for when I want eggs for lunch, the burgers are unremarkable, and generally you get what you want and it's going to be just barely over the line of average. My Diner is so so great. oh myyyyy... cheap, fabulous food AND good, fast service - could it be!? I drive/walk by it constantly and finally, after finding a long line at Mul's this morning, remembered this gem and I'm so glad I did. It is a little off the beaten path on A street which is why I probably haven't thought to go there before. I have to admit, at first I was a bit wary since the outside looks a little dingy, but upon entering it all comes together and the exterior really just adds to making it the quintessential diner experience. My Diner offers a no nonsense great meal. I ordered an egg white veggie omelet, bacon, and coffee - the egg whites weren't runny and perfectly cooked which is rare even for nice restaurants, the bacon was crispy and the coffee was strong. My boyfriend got pancakes - 3 GIANT ones, and raved all the way home about them. Our server was friendly, efficient, and accommodating, even though we were a tid bit fussy (ok maybe a lot bit) about where we wanted to sit. While this place is decidedly a mom and pop joint, and looks about as updated as your grandma's kitchen, it's kind of your quintessential old-school diner in its "Yeah, these seats were bought when this place opened and have withstood 30 years of thousands of butts on it!" way. If you're looking for a cheap diner breakfast -- a huge plate of eggs, sausages, french toast, for maybe the price of a grande latte -- $6, look no further. The breakfast plates are simple, but well-made. My eggs easy over were done to perfection. Not overly runny, not overcooked. For a simple thing, it's very easily, and often screwed up:T. I had the french toast, which was moist, flavorful, and came in the weirdest horizontal shape resembling Tennessee:). Our waitress reminded me of a sassy mom--equally friendly as she was sassy. My Diner is a fantastic little place that gives you so much bang for your buck! I just wish it were a little closer to home. The diner roasts their own turkeys and the quality of the meat is outstanding, easily the best I've had in Boston. Their turkey pilgrim sandwich is pretty amazing. I am not a big fan of cranberry sauce and so I requested just turkey and stuffing. I was shocked at how hearty and delicious the sandwich was for the price - I would have easily paid more for it. Their chicken soup is obviously homemade and incredibly delicious. A grilled cheese and a bowl of chicken soup was a wonderful and cheap lunch during some frigid days in Fort Point. Well, I've tried it twice and I'm not about to put it up there with Mul's, that's for sure. The first time I went I had some sort of omelette. It was so forgettable I can't even remember which one I ordered. The second time I got a standard eggs plate. The over-easy eggs should've been runnier and my toast was sopping in butter.
