We wandered into Dempsey's on a whim for a late breakfast and were pleasantly surprised. A bright sunny space with solid diner-style breakfast and lunch fare accompanied by fast and friendly service. Texas toast, eggs Benedict, and a BLT were all excellent so what's not to like? I think we've found a new spot to add to our roster of breakfast destinations. (To be fair, the coffee wasn't great. Will not return. I went here for breakfast with my young old son. They were not transparent about the cost of add-ons or the fact that the pricing on their menu is for cash-only transactions, and using a card has a surcharge. I have no problem with passing on card fees to customers, but this should be disclosed before orders are placed, and certainly before someone's card is charged a higher price than advertised without their knowledge or consent. Also, the waitress asked my son if he wanted cheese with his side of scrambled egg and he said yes; then we were unexpectedly charged $2 for the cheese (more than the cost of the egg, incidentally) even though she never mentioned an upcharge and cheese isn't listed on the menu as an added cost for sides.  I only found out about the added charges when I asked to pay and the waitress brought a handheld payment device that had only the final price on it, which was higher than I expected. I asked if I could see the breakdown (in my experience, restaurants normally show you the bill before they ask you to pay; this did not happen here). She gave it to me and everything on the bill was slightly higher than the prices listed on the menu. Giving the benefit of the doubt, I asked if perhaps the menu had not been updated to reflect current pricing. She said, no, that wasn't it, rather that there was a discount if you paid cash. But a discount is by definition a reduction in the usual price of something (i.e. the menu prices), whereas in this case they were effectively imposing an undisclosed surcharge to the advertised prices. Also worth noting that I was never asked if I wanted to pay in cash. I asked to speak with the manager, who chastised me that "when you go to a store and get food, you should expect to pay for it" and looked at me blankly when I said "yes, but I expect to pay the listed price." He also tried to pressure me into paying the higher prices, saying "it's not that much more," as if that meant I was being unreasonable and should just fork out, rather than recognizing they could have easily made good on their listed prices. They eventually took the $2 cheese off but not the other charges. The food itself was ok, but not great. When the scrambled egg came, to our surprise it was covered in two squares of American cheese that were only lightly melted. I see that someone else on yelp had the same experience more than a year ago and the manager acknowledged the feedback, but evidently they are continuing to do the same thing. Maybe some people like this but it is an unusual way to serve scrambled eggs and was not our cup of tea. Dissapointing dining and interpersonal experience. read more

We were the only people in the restaurant and still had awful service. Poor management and ridiculous prices. Food is decent but not worth it. Want to love this place just because it's been around forever, but unfortunately cannot back this business any longer. "Cash discount" is their excuse to scam people. They say they charge 5% more for credit card but it's way more than 5%. They don't provide a receipt for a reason. I'd take your money elsewhere. read more

That post-Christmas feeling filled the air and as we left, Jim asked me where we could go eat after hitting the gym. He told me there's a Starbucks eight steps away or this place called Dempseys across the street. I said to Jim still with the holiday airs in the wind, "Lets support a local business. Dempseys." No it was not delivered to me. I picked it up in store and drove 2 minutes to my house. Quality ingredients? There is literally a pre frozen chicken patty on-top of a waffle. You clearly use this patty to make sandwiches. Jeez put some effort into it, cut the patty into slices if ur going to pass this off as a proper meal. THEE GO TO PLACE FOR BREAKFAST IN MEDFORD! See all of those awards on their door? Yep, they are legit. George and his crew are welcoming and their food is stupendous. There may be a wait at certain times of the weekend but that's to be expected when the only other option in the area is D&D. The wait at the counter can be a little confusing but you can't blame a place for being too small. The people who already ordered are normally friendly enough to tell you this even if they can't move fully out of the way of the counter. The bagles and muffins are on display to let you know what is still left for the day. I would recommend not arriving after 1 PM because a favorite may already be sold out. I usually get a grilled triple berry muffin (one of the best I've ever had) or a spinach bagel with tomato and egg. Never ever have I had any issues with either product and I'm salivating as I write this thinking about it. My only complaint ever about Dempsey's has been the iced coffee and somebody slacking on figuring out the ratio of beans/water......it was completely watered down and I was unable to consume it. I love the Snicker Doodles flavor which is also a rare find but this was the offending flavor. Even if this one small incident (the other 10x I've gotten iced coffee have been fine) moves it to 4 1/2 stars, we're still rounding up. :) read more

Parking around here seems a bit tricky - be sure to read the signs as many spots note a 1 hour parking limit. Plenty of tables were available at 12:45pm one Saturday. We perused their menu and decided to share a Gyro Omelet (Tomato, Onions, Tzatziki Sauce) $9.75 with English muffin grilled, a side of Potato Pancakes $7.50, and a Grilled Muffin $1.99 (triple berry) between the two of us. We enjoyed our meal though the outstanding part of it in my book was the sweet grilled muffin, served hot with a pleasant surface crisp and soft melting butter. I'd come back. These were the absolute worst scrambled eggs I've ever had, the worst home fries I've ever had, and the bacon was 1 level above the eggs & home fries. How hard is it to scramble eggs? Instead of my 2 scrambled, I received one giant piece of completely flat cooked egg mixture which I had to attempt to scramble myself with my fork. I then found some strings of SOMETHING red that I can only hope came from the bacon, attached to the disgusting and barely cooked home fries. So I didn't even touch the wheat toast which was so soaked in butter the bread was halfway dissolved. And this is during quarantine, so I paid $21 for the nastiest breakfast I've ever attempted to eat. I basically paid $21 for 2 lousy strips of super thin bottom tier bacon. One of my favorite diners. Why you ask? Large portions! My husband got the Cali (guacamole, bacon, cheese) omelette and I got the meat lovers (steak, ham, bacon, sausage, cheese) omelette. Each omelette comes with home fries and 4 slices of toast. I could only get through 1/3 of mine and he got through 2/3 due to the portion size. My 4 year old got a side order of 2 scrambled eggs. It looked like 6 eggs were scrambled! We all shared a red velvet chocolate chunk grilled muffin. I got it grilled due to all of the reviews, but cant outrightly tell the difference between a grilled and non grilled muffin. I do love that there were about 10 different muffin options, 3 of which were chocolate based - chocolate chip, red velvet one I got and double chocolate chunk By the way, their website is not updated with the latest omelette options. Other pluses: attentive service, warm atmosphere (felt really nice to be here since it was 20 degrees outside), and each booth had a nutcracker for the holidays which provided an easy source of entertainment for my daughter! read more

I come here often with my boyfriend. It's a great local spot for breakfast. Great staff, great food and very reasonable prices. The grilled muffins are a must-try!!. The triple berry one is amazing!! But, if you are looking for something more in the sweet side, the double chocolate one is very tasty!. Home fries are a good mix of soft and crunchy, portions will leave you satisfied. Because many people don't think to come to this side of town, I've kindly created you a cheat sheet: 1) Wake up, put some clothes on (jeans, sweatpants, whatever will do, just please God, a shirt and shoes) 2) Don't eat any snacks (Dempsey's servings are large). 3) Drive to Dempsey's (it's located in Haines Square) 4) Park behind the Dunkin Donuts across the street ( I promise it's legal). 5) Wait to be seated (this place is a mad house, the servers are lovely, but if they don't seat you, they won't remember you exist) 6) Order the gyro omelette (or its sister dish the gyro breakfast sandwich) YUMMMMMS. The Gyro Omelette is eggs with tomatoes, onions, tzatziki sauce and beef gyro. It is delicious and filling and unexpectedly delicious 7) Convince your companion to order a grilled muffin (either the chocolate chip or the pistachio, both delicious). Steal said muffin from his plate and cover it in butter. Eat. Smile broadly. 8) Smily sweetly at your waitress. (This will ensure you a never ending supply of coffee refills). 9) Pay and leave happy. Summary: Dempsey's isn't fancy, but its a greasy spoon done right. For less than $10 you will leave full and happy, and possibly a whole lot more knowledgable about the hot Medfid gossip. read more

Have heard of Dempsey's some time ago. I work nearby and decided why not give them a try. I ordered through GH. I decided on the corned beef hash omelette with grilled tomatoes and a side of English muffins. Very happy to say, I made a great choice. The omelette was stuffed with hash and cheese. Pancakes are great and huge too. Great coffee, my girlfriend loves their selection of flavors. My latte is always perfectly done. It's a nice place. We had no wait the gentlemen that greeted us was very friendly and he sat us right away the diner was packed which is a good sign. The diner is very clean throughout we like that. Our waitress was right on top of everything. The only issue that I had was when we ordered our beverages the orange juices were brought in to -go -cups, I don't like that I want real glassware another thing for our coffee they bring your coffee cup with cream already poured. I didn't like that either there should be individually creamers or a creamer carafe at the table upon ordering coffee. I also noticed paper menu, not plastic also the condiments were not named brands like Heinz. So this is my reason for my 3 stars hopefully they upgrade a lot of the things in the restaurant. read more

I found Dempsey's via Yelp (Thanks YELP!), when I was looking to find a breakfast spot during my weekend trip to Boston. Having stayed at the Hyatt Place in Medford Dempsey's was a short drive away. I am OH SO happy I listened to my fellow Yelpers. Dempsey's RULES. The atmosphere is casual, laid back, Mom and Pop. Yes the place is small but tables move rather quickly (yay to the kitchen staff for getting the food out quickly). The staff is hard working, friendly and polite. They did not even bat an eyelash when I asked for a cup of ice for my smart water. The food is awesome. No the portions aren't huge, but the prices cannot be beat (two eggs, potatoes, toast for $5)- plus American portions are too huge anyway. The coffee is heavenly, comes to you in a to go cup (as do all their beverages), everything from lattes to cappuccino's to black coffee- they have the requisite syrups to give you that coffee shop experience. Last but not least- the MUFFINS. Everyone who knows me, knows I have a breakfast pastry problem. In my heart of hearts i see nothing wrong with having cake for breakfast, and I am so damn glad Dempsey's is in Boston or I would weigh 500lbs. Their muffins are the BEST I have ever had. You can order them cold (regular), warm, or grilled- yes GRILLED. The grill brought out the sugars in my triple berry muffin, combined with the rich butter was just a heavenly experience. Ah...I am getting a bit teary eyed thinking about it. As of right now Ginger D. is experimenting with grilling muffins to satisfy my craving. Dempsey's rules. I will be back! After a visit to the dentist I decided I needed a coffee (don't judge), so I stopped in at Dempsey's on the way to work. After reading the reviews from fellow yelpers I was also anxious to try one of their muffins. I decided on the triple berry and a small latte. I was a little disappointed they didn't offer to toast my muffin, like they had for other yelpers, but hey, you can't win them all. The muffins are $1.35 each, fine. The small latte was rather expensive at $2.50 and when I opened the lid to add sugar, found it was only filled about 3/4 of the way to the top. After a taste, I decided it was average, nothing mind blowing. But the muffin, even untoasted, was the saving grace of my visit ... and my morning. Chock full of fresh, colorful berries, it was big, soft and delicious. I'll definitely be back for another triple berry muffin, but I think I'll just stick to a regular coffee next time. read more
