Buuuuut, I got my car serviced for a simple oil change at a national chain (who shall remain nameless but initials are JL) which resulted in an oil leak dripping on my garage floor. I returned, they looked at in the service bay and all I heard was a company line on "residual oil dripping" (at least 5 times by 2 different employees). Still leaked afterwards so I made an appointment and brought it to My Mechanic. They took care of it in about an hour for less than 50 bucks. No more drips! There are few things in this world that are as stressful and expensive as getting your car repaired. So today when I got into my car and my accelerator quit on me, all I could think was "there goes $500". I was on my lunch break, and my car could only roll. It was a blessing in disguise when I rolled it right on in to their shop. First off, right from the get-go, they were friendly and happy to help. They checked a couple things and tried a few more while I was just standing there completely bummed that I was not going to have my car. But still they were confident. Scotti led me into the waiting area, and was easy-going and sociable. I felt more at ease with them working on my car than most places I have been to. They were great. If you're on the fence about bringing your car to one place or another; don't be. Roll it right on in, and they'll be honest, dependable, and just downright helpful. No gimmicks, no dancing around why you're being charged this or that. It's all right there and communicated to you on the spot. Now, my car had an issue with the accelerator sticking. It had been getting worse and worse as time went on but had finally decided to stop working right outside their shop. But still they tried a couple things--maybe it's the cable, but that was functioning well and not binding. They checked the throttle body and noticed the build up from some carbon deposits. Instead of taking the opportunity to throw me a $600 to $800 bill, they took the part out and sanded it down. I got back in my car and boy, was it good to go. They were completely upfront. They told me that in the future, this may happen again and I will need to replace the part; there's only so much sanding you can do to a part like that. Scotti was great. After I painlessly paid a bill that was a tenth of what I was expecting to pay, I made the decision right then and there if I needed to have the part replaced I was coming to them. read more

Coming from someone who has had the most terrible experiences when having to get anything worked on in my vehicle, I can whole heartedly say, thank you My Mechanic! This is the first time I have visited an auto repair shop and walked away knowing that the service I received was both quality AND honest. These guys know what they are doing and will work with customers to find the best plan for work that needs to be done. Something to keep in mind: They do quality work and will not cut corners. This is obviously a huge plus, but it's important to understand that because of this, you will still have to pay a reasonable price. They do everything they can to give the lowest price possible (lower than many places), but it's not going to be like going to a Midas or some of the other cheap places that don't do the best job. My first experience with them: I got my two front wheel bearings done at home in Michigan, and the parts were bad by the time I got back here. I brought it in to Scotty and the team, and I was amazed at the quality of their customer service, honesty and willingness to work with someone who didn't have a ton of money to spend on an old car. Scotty worked extremely hard to find a part that was reasonably priced for me and called me every step of the way before they did anything to my car. He also told me that one side could probably wait if I wanted to save some money and see how it went. Second experience: I brought my car in thinking the other wheel bearing had finally reached the limit and I would have to get it fixed. The guy looking at my car allowed me to do a drive with him to describe the noise. He took the time to tell me what I should be listening for and pointed out the noise he heard that indicated a different problem (muffler). When we returned, Scotty took the time to quote me for the muffler, but also explained my option to go somewhere like a Midas if I was just trying to get by until getting rid of the car. I have never had a mechanic be this honest with me! read more

Can't say enough about this place. They do great work at affordable prices, and they are just plain NICE. I took my 2006 Nissan truck to the shop we have always used when it developed a weird rubbing/squeaking noise in the front wheels. They said it needed all new brakes, rotors, and the bearings were shot. They could fix it for about $3,000. For that much $$, I will deal with the noise. Then, took the same truck for inspection but the check engine light was on - doh. They said it would cost $125 to even hook it up to the code reader. (Autozone does this for free. A reasonable charge, sure. $125 isn't reasonable for something I can get down the road for free.) Lucky for me, a friend recommended Scotty at My Mechanic. My first indication that this was not your average shop was when I called at about 5:30 pm to see if they were still open. They weren't. I hung up and planned to call back the next morning, and left work for the day. I came in the next morning with a message from Scotty - he saw that I called and called me back. These days, getting a call back when they already have my car is hard, but he took the time to reach out. Anyway. Took the truck to Scotty and he found the emissions problem, and was able to find me a used gas tank for less than $300 instead of a new one for about $1,000. They got my truck fixed up and ready to go very quickly, for a fraction of what I would have paid for elsewhere. He also looked at what might be causing the squeak, and said it was probably the brakes, but it was NOT the bearings, which were the majority of the $3,000 price the other place quoted me. I had him do the brakes, also for much less than I have ever been charged before, and no more squeak!! TL;DR - you can't go wrong this this place. They are honest and reliable and didn't talk to me like I am child because I am female. Won't go anywhere else now. read more

My Mechanic is a local business that will fix your car at a reasonable cost. I had a big problem with my power steering and they were able to repair it for about 60% of what the dealership was going to charge. They also came a little _under_ the estimated cost to repair the car. I've never seen that at a mechanic before! The name makes it seem like it'd be a chain, but this is a local business, associated with the Craftsman Auto Body local chain. After the repair, they registered the service they did on my car with the account I have at MyCarFax, which was a nice bonus. They did great work for my car and I will use them again. read more

I have no idea how I first learned about My Mechanic, but I'm so glad I did! We have a 2003 station wagon that's had plenty of issues and a 2009 sedan with its own quirks, and My Mechanic has serviced both of them very well. Their prices on parts and labor are very competitive, but mostly I come back for the people. Scotty (the head honcho as of this writing in 2015) is nice, super easy to talk to, and most importantly, he'll speak at length about your car's repairs. Whether you know a lot about cars or next to nothing, he'll explain exactly what they found, how it impacts your car's performance, whether or not it's a critical fix, what exactly will happen if you do/don't fix it...his explanations are pragmatic and always helpful. All of the actual mechanics I've met have also been really chill and knowledgeable, and the admin staff is the same way. If you're trying to decide between two mechanics with similar price points and a good history of reliable fixes, go with My Mechanic. The people really make the experience. read more

I had my car taken to Craftsman Auto Body in Sterling VA which is thee best Body Shop in the Northern VA area only body shop I go to around this area. I was in a car accident because of an idiot on his cell phone which is the majority of people on the road these days anyways Craftsman recommended My Mechanic and I am more than happy they did because no one else in this area could have done a better job and I have been to numerous mechanic shops before and I've worked as a mechanic before so I'm picky about who works on my car. The company where I work uses My Mechanic for our vehicle fleet, so I also take my personal vehicle there whenever I need service. Their prices are always competitive and the staff is courteous. Scotti and DJ feel like friends because they are so personable. Most of the work that I've had completed there has been routine maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations, brake pad replacements, etc), but I also took my boyfriend's car there for a side window replacement after a break in and they provided the lowest estimate out of three places. These are the good guys -- Simple as that. I had a power steering failure and the dealer quoted me a super high amount. My Mechanic halved the cost and had it fixed the same day. They didn't do any work without my permission and laid out my options very clearly. Scotty runs a good shop over there and the mechanic's that I've met have been very, very good. I even got a ride to work! I've been to this shop for this failure, solving an odd sound (had high oil consumption & was low on oil), and I also had body work done next door at their auto body shop. Terrible. I tried to explain the problem I was having and was basically laughed at like I had no idea. I told them the radiator fan didn't work, they said " No that can't be it". So they wouldn't even check it. Also they gave the car back with a check engine light on that they could not figure out. I took the car to another shop and sure enough the radiator fan was dead. If I could give higher than 5 stars, I would! This is a long review, so bear with me. I'm a bit of a shadetree mechanic and can do relatively uncomplicated repairs myself. (I've replaced my own brake rotors/pads, window regulators, compressor, evaporator, exhaust system, valve cover gaskets, head bolt retorque, motors mounts, etc), so I don't often go to mechanics unless it's beyond my ability, too dangerous, special tools too expensive, or just plain too cold outside. :) The difficulty of finding an honest mechanic was one of the reasons I started doing repairs myself. However, a couple of years ago, I had my windshield broken by a flying chunk of ice kicked up by an 18 wheeler, so my insurance sent me to Virginia Glass, which is part of My Mechanic. While I was in the reception area waiting, I heard several estimates and explanations go out to customers. I was very impressed by the honesty and integrity of the people at this shop and the explanations they gave. I said to myself then, "If I ever need anything done on my car, I'll come here." A few days ago, my mother's 1990s Camry had a metal brake line that rusted out. She decided to go to her usual dealership and they quoted her 10 hours of labor at $125/hour and $800 in parts, so that was $2250 total. She called me and was very upset -- she was thinking of giving up the car. I talked to the dealership's mechanic and they wanted to replace every line coming out of the master cylinder and wouldn't just fix the part that had broken. The light bulb went off in my head and I said, "Hey Mom, tow your car to My Mechanic in Sterling and get an estimate there. I have a good feeling about them." Scotty called me back from My Mechanic with an estimate of $500. That's a $1750 savings over what the dealer wanted! He also really took his time to explain the kind of work he was going to do on the car. Now, there's no way he knew if I knew nothing about cars or if I knew a lot, but he explained everything clearly and in terms that even my mother could probably understand. It's now fixed and mom's car is back on the road. My mother is happy, so I'm happy. I'm so impressed at finally finding an honest shop with reasonable rates, I'll likely now take my car there and give up my shadetree mechanic career -- and finally get my weekends back! I'll definitely be recommending this place to my friends. read more
