I was looking forward to some good donuts and maybe a cookie or two from the Yelp reviews. It was national donut day. I got there before 10 am and the place looked bare. Just about a tray of donuts left and only 2 plain cake ones. When I asked if they could be frosted, the lady got them to go back to frost them with chocolate. I looked around and also got a cookie. Lady behind the counter told me that she either makes too little or too much, never right. May be we should try a too much day to see the Best they have to offer. Although they didn't have any cakes available, the lady behind the counter was extremely helpful in mentioning they only need about 24-hours notice and can whip something up for future reference. I got a few different pastries to go. They were all good. Being a Sunday afternoon most of the pastries were gone already. I recommend going early to get a wider variety of goodies. read more

A couple years ago, a friend and I were traipsing around town on a Monday snow day from work, and decided to head to My Old World Bakery. He didn't realize they're closed on Mondays, so we lost out. I new I wanted to try their offerings, so I kept them in my bookmarks for safe keeping. Fast forward 2 years, I saw Cameron's ROTD, just so happened I was headed to that side of town for lunch, so I planned a detour stop. Jan was such a delight! She was working the front, manning all the baked goods. Pleasant lady. Sent a good bit of time chatting about the neighborhood happenings, and what not. I got several things to-go, including a few custard filled donuts, cinnamon roll, a glazed knot, and a cinnamon twist. I had an expired Groupon to use for the $10 face value, and that got me something like 8 donuts. PS, the price is very reasonable for these fresh, handmade baked goodies. FYIndulgence: The Chocolate glazed Custard and Apple Fritter are, at its core, the most delectable donuts by far! Soft and not dry. The custard is not of that fake cheap ass sugar taste. Oh the Fritter, mmmm. Both I warmed and ate with a glass of milk - dessert for breakfast!! Everything is made fresh daily in the back of their space. There's a giant window for watching the baking process. I'm always a sucker for the quality independently owned businesses, and My Old World Bakery fits that category to the T. Ya'll... Ya'll.... Ya'll. I'm giving it up to this small like bakery wonder to the west-side. The inlaws lived near this part of town as kids, and what prompted my stop was them saying that back in the 50's/60's this bakery was good. That's a long time running, and while I didn't ask the lady currently running if it was still in family hands, or transitioned, to me the taste did speak for itself. Being old is never a bad thing. So this place doesn't really have the fondant masterpieces, or modern cookie decorating skills, but that's not so terrible. Everything reminded me of bakeries from my younger years that my Grandparents would have frequented. The smell of sugar and baked breads hits you upon entering. Unfortunately, the owner apologized as she was almost sold out in one display case from a very busy day! The donuts were kaput, so we opted for pastries and cookies. There were still plenty of pies, cakes, and other confectioneries to choose from. Whoever said this place is a 'Stick to your ribs' kinda of place is correct. This is not the light, and flaky, subtle french pastries. This is the ... I ate half a cookie... why is there a brick in my stomach... Kinda place. I need a nap now. The pastry that stole my heart was the 'Beehive' (Aka Bees-ting Cake)-- A German layered pastry of sweet flaky goodness filled with custard and topped with honey, and toasted, sliced almonds pieces. Delightful is an understatement. I was 'wow'ed. It made me add the extra star to my review for that baked good alone. If your down in the hood... you really need to stop. Drooling everywhere, I tell myself to choose just a couple, arguing that its never good to try and eat one of each flavor in a single setting. But lets be honest here, you can take donuts anywhere. A few examples; heaven, the grave, birthday parties, your birthday, my birthday, weekdays or weekends. Lets not forget they pair well with all four seasons so you can eat them year round. In case Im not explaining myself, YOU CAN EAT DONUTS ANYTIME ALL THE TIME. To the point, this place makes a great donut. You wont find it on your way to anything unless you already live in the area. So If your lazy, believe all donuts taste the same, or just dont love em like I do, then by all means grab a krispy kreme from speedway or a tim hortons donut, no judgement here as those are good donuts too. Four pecan buns per day. That's all they make, apparently...so you should, if you're in the area, get over there early and get one. The dough isn't fluffly lightness; this is stuff that will stick to your ribs (and hips) for a while. There are more pecans on each roll than in the entire state of Georgia. Mmmmm....pecan, cinnamony, sticky bun goodness! They also do some really good turnovers, with excellent fruity flavors: tart cherry, blackberry, apple. And similarly flavored sugared twists. They also do a cibatta bread that's very good, special-order only. Everything looks homemade in this little bakery and it tastes that way, too. In search of the best Bakery in Columbus In came accross My Old World Bakery, it might be off the beaten path but for me it is worth the 30 minute drive everytime! The owner is great, so friendly, she does it all herself, baking, sales and still has a smile on her face every time! The pecan Rolle are TO DIE FOR! So is everything else she sells. Biting into their glazed doughnut took me back to sitting in my mom's kitchen and biting into one of her fresh glazed doughnuts straight from the oven. It was very light and fluffy. It was moist but I am guessing if you came here late in the day that it might get a little soggy at least from the texture. Also my mom's always got soggy by the evening of the baking. I also decided to try the Boston Cream and Pecan Roll. The Boston cream was similar to the glazed in being light and fluffy. I would have like more custard in the middle and the chocolate on top was running a little. I took the last Pecan Roll which was pretty good. They pile the Pecans on the tops and it has a good texture through the whole roll. The roll was also perfectly moist without a dry bite. The best part is a manager of another chain doughnut place was standing in the place and said that he prefers these doughnuts over his own establishments. I told them it was my first visit to the bakery and they gave me advice on the best ones to try and a slight discount. That is what i call customer service and will motivate me to maybe stop in next Tuesday when i have to drive down to Hilltop again. I welcome this trip which is about 5 minutes out of my way but worth it. Doughnuts are &.80 or $8 for a dozen. The Pecan rolls are almost $1.50. I think the value and quality are well worth a trip here. The owner donates the leftover each day to homeless shelters so no worries about day old doughnuts. read more

Wow. This bakery used to be so great! It has seen better days. I was excited to get the pepperoni bread as I do remember when I was young that we loved it so much. I couldn't even finish one bite of it this time. It was so stale it must have been sitting on the shelf for days. The donuts were not much better. I spent $17.00 and ended up throwing 95% of it away. This has been a family staple since my childhood. Excellent, fresh-baked breads and sweets every day. Living on the West Side, I've watched the area go downhill, but the quality of the good hasn't diminished in the least. It's right next to the Certified on the corner and caddy-cornered from Franklin Heights High School, so you're likely to encounter some teenagers with inflated egos and no manners if you stop by between 2-4pm. I'd stop by early in the morning or during school hours if you can; everything will be fresh out of the oven and you won't have to deal with the kids from the high school. read more

I used to visit this bakery years ago when I was in high school. So to fill a donut craving I went back and haven't been let down. There glazed donuts are so light and airy. My only complaint is that the bakery is old and could use a major makeover. I also don't care for the other baked goods as they seem to be old and stale. They even make Pepperoni Bread...there were a couple Mom & Pop Italian bakeries near my home in NJ that made it and I never expected to find it in Columbus. The woman who worked the counter was very sweet. It had a nostalgic feel and the smell of a small town bakery when I entered. I purchased a variety of items - donuts, pastries, cookies. They tasted fine. Enjoyable but not the best I've ever had. The one downside was the appearance of the items - frosting and glazes were inconsistently applied, cookie decorations were smudged or sloppy, donut shapes were inconsistent at best. I wouldn't recommend them for items for an event or dinner party, but if you just want to grab a quick treat without caring how they look, they are tasty enough. read more
