I like Dr. Kolnik a lot. He's been treating my husband for years to rave reviews. However, after going for my first eye exam, I have some concerns about his office's practices. My husband and I pay for full coverage for an annual eye exam, lenses, and frames. Yet we were handed a bill for over $300 when we left. First, the office requires you to do an eye test that is not covered by insurance at all. They literally pressure you to do it regardless of if you need it or not. $40/person, so for both of us that was $80. After the exam, we went to discuss glasses. Francine asked us which type of anti-glare we'd like on the glass: blue light blocking or not. The two are the same price, $85. We were never offered the option to NOT get anti-glare and therefore stay within the bounds of our coverage, so for both of us that was an extra $170. The remaining balance were co-pays, which were fine. But this office took advantage of our lack of expertise in this field to nickel and dime us for an extra $250 that we really did not need to pay, but weren't given a choice. Patient beware. Giving one extra star because Dr. Kolnik really does have excellent bedside manner. read more

Companies like this have a poor business model that results A.I. customer service and horrible manufacturing of frames and prescription. I was a long-time patient of My Eye Dr located in Wellesley, from way back ... when it was Newton Eye located on Langley Rd. When Dr. Gillman retired, I stayed with them. Initially it was OK, but I got a different dr. every time. Then they stopped accepting my insurance. In the meantime, I got a new pair of glasses at your Brookline Village location. They have never fit correctly. I suspected they were too big to start, but I was assured they were not. ) Since then, I've had them adjusted at the Newton Highlands location ... but they still fly off my face all the time. OK. So, I found out that this Newton Highlands location does take my insurance, so I made an appointment there, The first dr was very nice and patient as I tried different contacts. (I've had an ongoing problem getting my prescription right.) A couple of months later, I made an appointment for a contact adjustment ... the prescription wasn't working for me. One plus: this second appointment was free. This time I had a different dr. She was OK, but a bit dismissive. She told me the prescription I preferred was not the right one for me and that she hated the brand/type I prefer ... but she didn't give a reason when I asked why. Then, she offhandedly said that I have cataracts. Well, this was troubling news; the previous dr. hadn't mentioned it. However, it does explain some of the issues I've been having (I know this from Googling, not from any info I was provided with.) The dr did not follow up at all ... she did not explain what cataracts were or what I should do about them. I suspect I should go to an opthamolagist ... but she did not say so ... and I doubt every patient would know to do so. Do I need to get checked out every, say, three months? Is there anything I should do to protect my eyesight? Or slow the progression? Or to see better? Should I not wear contacts? Maybe my case is minor at this point so I'm over thinking it ... but then she should have said so. So ... now I'm back to square one. I need a new exam with someone whom I have confidence in, an I'll probably have to pay for it. I also need new glasses frames, which I'll also have to pay for (again!) I would be better off in I never walked into an My Eye Doc. Previously, I had a policy of not going to chain doctors or doctors who advertise. Eye care is not like fast food! read more

I had my first visit at MyEyeDr Newton Upper Falls. I can't say enough about how great I fell about my visit. The office was pretty with plants outside the large window. The staff was welcoming. There was parking right outside. Dr.Shirley Solomon gave me a very thorough exam and found cataracts that I didn't know were there. She explained carefully what she saw and why one eye was so compromised. I learned a lot. I should also say that this practice accepts Medicare which many don't. There was also an impressive array of lenses to choose from without being overwhelming. I feel fortunate to have found this practice and I highly recommend them and Dr.Solomon. read more

Before my visit, I had never had a problem with my glasses, which I need to wear all of the time, or with this location. A number of months back, I initially went in to MyEyeDr on Chestnut Street in Newton for new glasses, and it took 3 visits, with 3 different doctors, over many weeks/months, to get my lens prescription close to correct. The first prescription was completely wrong and didn't work at all, which the second dr. confirmed; and the 2d prescription was wrong and didn't work either, which the 3d doctor confirmed. During the whole time, I was told that my eyes would adjust to the each prescription, which didn't happen because the prescriptions were wrong. As a result, I had headaches and eye strain from trying to adjust to incorrect prescriptions, and from switching back and forth between the new and old glasses, which I had to wear while the lenses in the new pair were being replaced (twice). I'm not happy with the final prescription/glasses, but am not going back, after having spent a lot of money on very expensive lenses and frames. They also convinced me to spend a lot of money on a large quantity of contact lenses I didn't need, since I rarely wear contacts (said I would get a discount on the frames). The first contact lens prescription was wrong (same as the glasses) and had to be exchanged; although they did the exchange, when they still weren't right, I was told that it was too late to return them. Dr. Alexa Caruso & Anna just gave me my best eye exam experience. Everything was performed professionally and with great COVID-19 related measures. Dr. Caruso was extremely friendly and explained my results clearly to me. The equipment that allowed me to be examined without dilation was so convenient. I went to My Eye Dr in January of 2023. I had an exam and ordered lenses for my existing frames and paid the full amount due (over $750 for just lenses after insurance). They included a "Promise Date" for delivery of the glasses on the invoice which for me was two weeks later. I thought this was a great way to communicate and set expectations. Two weeks later, I had not heard from them so I called. They were not ready but I was told they would be a week or week and half late. I followed up several times when I didn't hear back. Having to constantly call for updates after each new promise date passed, and getting different stories from different people was frustrating. The glasses arrived two days short of a month after the appointment, well over two weeks after the "Promise Date." It was frustrating that the promise was not kept and no accommodation was made, but I had my glasses so I moved on. Almost a year later I got a bill for more money with no explanation on the bill regarding what it was for or why it was showing up almost a year later. I emailed and called asking why this was happening, explaining my experience and asking that this charge (under $30) be dismissed. I stated that as frustrating as the initial experience was, billing me unexplained charges almost a year later was even worse and I would share my experience if this late, unexplained charge remained. It sounds like they failed to charge a co-pay and also failed to realize that for almost 11 months, though no explanation was given as to why this charge was occurring so late. They refused to dismiss the charge. I'm a man of my word. 100% would not recommend going to My Eye Dr. Way too many failures to deal with just getting new lenses. read more

Doctor Kolnik is very nice, but since MyEyeDr took over, the service has declined. Phone calls are not returned. Going there in person results in folks writing on a post-it note and again, no returned calls. Previously, there were people who were great and would answer the phone. Now, the new business model is clearly to save money by not employing those folks or answering phones. Also, since MyEyeDr took over, I was told that the selection of glasses has been reduced. It was noticeably smaller and different. Previously, I didn't mind paying $500-900 for good frames since I consider it an investment. Now I'll have to look at Zeiss, Warby Parker, etc for other options and hope they fit as well as the great folks used to help me find there. Most upsetting is that I paid for a contact-lens exam for near-vision and did not get that finalized. Now, I'm out $200+ and do not have the prescription I need. That's tough to remedy when they do not answer calls and discard notes. UPDATE 9/8: MyEyeDr did agree to refund me for the prescription I got previously. It is not clear to me why I had no replies to calls or my in-person visit. Perhaps they can: - fix their phone systems - restore their glasses selection - train the new folks to be nearly as good as the older ones. I do wish them well. I used to enjoy that place. read more

The word incompetence most accurately describes my experience. First, after waiting over two weeks, they filled my vision prescription with reading glasses. Then, when I got the glasses back, my expensive & loved Oakley frames were bent & no longer fit my face. Prior to handing them over to the store, they fit perfectly. Additionally, I wound up having to go nearly 5 weeks without my vision glasses. By comparison, WARBY Parker delivered a flawless experience, delivering a brand new pair of prescription reading glasses in just 3 days for a fraction of the price. read more

This is the most unprofessional & uncaring Eye Care establishment I have ever done business with. They don't answer their phone. They don't return voice mails. They don't keep to their posted hours. Thy don't offer any evening hours . Their prices are insane. They seem to be just doing this to "pay the rent" with zero concern for their patients. If I could give zero stars, I would. This location has the worst possible service imaginable. First of all, the inside is run down and the exam rooms are in desperate need of updating. The rotating doctors have no interest in spending time to address vision issues outside of single lens prescriptions. Last year, I had the privilege of witnessing two staff members get into a shouting match with one another. I vowed never to go back but sadly went for convince and returned this year. About a month ago my daughter had an appointment, they were 15 mins late, no big deal as I know this can happen. What is a big deal is last week I had an appointment which I thought was scheduled for 5pm. I arrived at 4:49 and was informed my appointment was actually for 4:40 and they would not see me. I asked them if there was a policy not to see someone who was less than 10 minutes late and they informed me there was no policy and it was up to them what they choose to do. So despite the doctor literally standing there and no one else waiting, they declined my appointment and insisted I reschedule. No thank you. It makes me incredibly sad that Stephen Kolnick sold his practice to this horrific practice. read more

My eyes sometimes could be tricky to get the right prescription, but Dr. Caruso has done perfect job in examining my eyes and making different adjustment to get the best fit.
