I highly recommend the twice fried fish that everyone else has written about - it was so crispy and well seasoned. We also had the cumin lamb that was so flavorful and delicious, the dumplings (also yummy), and the spicy potato salad. The potato salad gave a nice refreshing taste after the crispy fish! Def order from the authentic side of the menu! It was a busy, small, clean restaurant ! If you are looking for very attentive service that's fast, I do not recommend this place to you. Favorite Chinese place in Columbus by a long shot. Yangzhou fried rice: best fried rice I've ever had. Not greasy at all yet full of flavor. Spicy cilantro pork: tons of peppers on here which were too much for me, but when I took most of the peppers off it still had a ton of flavor. Despite it being too spicy for me personally, I would still get this dish again and take the time to take the peppers out because it's just that good. General Tso chicken: I know I know Americanized dish, but my girl got it and I ended up eating half of it. I will say though, although this is an Americanized dish, this was the best damn General tso chicken I have ever had. I was pleasantly surprised. Spicy fern(?): purple noodles. This one weirded me out as I'm just a white boy from a small town who has never seen something like this. But wow this was absolutely incredible. It has so much flavor of sweet yet spicy and other flavors I can't even comprehend. I've never had a bad thing here. I won't order from anywhere else any time soon. read more

This place deserves the highest scores for unique, authentic Chinese dishes. We are so lucky to have this many awesome varieties of regional Chinese cuisine available in Columbus! We gave this place a try six months ago, and we were high-fiving on the way out...but I didn't want to review until we had a couple more meals under our belts. (Okay, so our belts are getting tight. Just saying.) The decor is pretty casual and honestly reminiscent of what you would expect to see - modest decor, stock photos of dishes, etc. Staff are super-nice and amenable to an adventurous palate. The menu is large and runs the gamut - you can get vegan, vegetarian, American chinese, wings - and you'll get a lot of it. Great bang for your buck, lots of flavor and spice! My favorite appetizer is the mixed vegetable salad, which is a mix of crunchy cucumber and and cabbage with tofu and bean sprouts. Best dishes so far are the spicy pork and mung bean pork with dried tofu (this is like a taco situation, where you put the pork & veggies into dried tofu squares, fold and eat. Pretty tasty). The spouse ordered the 'house special' lamb/green bean stew with pancake. It's for two, and I think he got three full meals out of it - a stew of lamb, big green beans, potatoes, carrots, glass noodles. On top is a pancake made of cornmeal and flour. I think rice comes on the side? All the carbs! It was delicious and yes, a full three meals' worth of food. I'd put NE Chinese in my top five "authentic Chinese" list. Everything I get at this place is amazing. The Singapore Beef rice noodle is to die for. And my personal go to where ever I go Szechuan boiled fish/peppercorn fish. This place has the best I've had in cbus thus far. Yes it's hot/spicy but not overwhelming and packed with tons of flavor. I'm sooo impressed with them. This place doesn't focus on 'Americanizing' everything, but rather quality and authenticity. Even though the interior and exterior looks tragic, don't let that scare you off! So, from his reviews of this eatery, I wanted to try their authentic Sparerib Stewed Green Bean with Mushroom dish. Yes, it is huge. Yes, it will easily feed 4-6 people depending on your huger level. And, most important, yes, it is very good! Via Richard, I've learned that this restaurant cooks Dongbei-style. They have a lot of cold dishes. Considering it was very hot and humid outside, this was a plus for our evening gathering. We ordered their cold appetizer Mixed Vegetable Salad. Very flavorful. Yes, the vinegar-based liquid has a substantial kick to it. I could only handle about 2-3 bites, before taking an extended break. All the colorful julienned veggies, though! This dish is also on the bigger side, fyi. Star of the show? The Sparerib Stewed Green Bean with Mushroom. The meat was extremely tender, fell right off the bone. The noodles are not your average rice or flour variety. Sweet potato noodles. A new way of getting my weekly spud intake in. Clever, indeed. Excellent! We had: twice cooked spicy fish, salt and pepper tofu, and a kind of seasonal leafy green cooked in garlic sauce. The tofu was great- well seasoned crispy outside with tender tofu centers, and just a little chopped vegetable garnish. The greens were tender and delicious! But the real star here was the twice-cooked fish. Impossibly tender inside, almost creamy textured somehow? With a really delicious sauce, of which there wasn't too much so the fish remained crispy while we ate. The peppers are pretty intense, mostly because there are so many of them, but it's quite easy to adjust the heat by eating more or fewer of them in each bite. Only minor downside was that the onions were slightly undercooked, but everything else more than made up for it. Seriously this was a dish I'll be back for again, and soon. This place is a bit more expensive than some others, but not wildly so, plus the quality is good and everything is fresh. Some things (like the simple vegetables) might have been priced a little high in my opinion, especially compared to the other dishes (almost the same as complex/protein dishes). But I'd still order them again and again because they're perfectly cooked. Side note: I wish there was an option to get a few little side dishes so you could try more things- but I wish this about most restaurants, so- not their fault. As others have said, there are two menus here. Everything we got from the authentic menu was great- go for it! They'll help and walk you through it and are happy to explain and recommend, which is very helpful. TIP: if you are ordering takeout, talk to them about what's new on the menu, or order from the sit-down menu, as it has more items. The paper menu is smaller as it hasn't been updated. In fact, whether eating in or taking out just ask and order that way, they give great recommendations and there's plenty more that's not on the menu. Overall: some of the best Chinese food I've had in town, up there with Jiu Thai, but a totally different menu, so I'll be back to both often. read more

The eponymously named N.E. Chinese Restaurant serves, as the name implies, Northeastern Chinese food. They've taken over the old spot occupied by Secret Vessel, and based on the meal I just had there, they will be a great improvement upon the older tenant. It should be noted the restaurant itself is still a little barebones, and the staff appears to consist of one chef and one server/hostess, so if you go there and you're not entirely sure whether they're open or not, just be patient and wait for the friendly hostess to return from the kitchen. Northeastern Chinese food (in Chinese, 東北菜 dongbei cai) is characterized by particular influences unique to the region, including some touches from nearby Korea. One of the nice things about Dongbei-style cuisine is that it includes a number of cold dishes, which was perfect for the hot, humid summer day that a friend and I had lunch there. We started with the mixed vegetable salad, a collection of finely sliced vegetables served in a cold vinegar-based broth. There are many variations of this dish to be found around Columbus, but it's worth noting how beautifully plated the version that N.E. Chinese Restaurant served was. Presentation is rarely one of the things a Chinese restaurant cares that deeply about, but the beautiful presentation of this dish was a clear indication of the pride and care N.E. Chinese Restaurant puts into their cooking. We also had two noodle dishes, a dish of vermicelli served in a cold broth, accompanied by finely sliced vegetables and a few slices of meat, and a stir-fried noodle dish. The cold noodle dish was as nicely presented as the first dish, and more importantly, very tasty, particularly the slender slices of beef. The stir-fried noodle dish consisted of pork, cabbage, and wheat noodles stir-fried in a vinegar-based sauce; it was delicious, and particularly infused with the flavor of the wok it was cooked in (what the Cantonese would call "wok hei"). I've been back to N.E. Chinese Restaurant twice since my initial visit, and based on that I can with assurance say that they are easily one of the best Chinese restaurants in Columbus, particularly if you're looking for something other than the more commonly found Cantonese or Sichuan cooking styles. It's also an example of the incredible richness and diversity that has come to characterize the Columbus food scene, the brightest spots of which are characterized by people with a love of cooking and who take joy in sharing that with others. It's a good time to be living in Columbus, and N.E. Chinese Restaurant is another bright spot in the city. read more

An exciting new restaurant on High, just north of Hudson, I parked in the Ace of Cups lot because they're kind and won't tow. Northeast Chinese Restaurant provides you with just what you might expect: northeast Chinese dishes. The quality is on par with Yau's but offers a selection of different dishes. They also have a full selection of the classics, so if you're after that Orange Chicken or whatever, you can have that, too. I ordered the Spicy Pork with Cilantro, which is everything for fans of cilantro. The woman serving told me she would have offered it to me if I hadn't already wanted it out of the gate. Her excitement let me know it was one of the star dishes. A beautiful dish popping with red and green, the garlicky pork arrived with toasted dry chilies and sauteed cilantro, heavy on the stems. Full of flavor, I found myself ready for the next bite before swallowing. If you've had fresh cilantro stems, you might worry about bitterness, but sauteed with garlic (and possibly finely chopped onion, I wasn't sure) there was no bitter quality, and the stems were tender and fresh-tasting, the best part of the dish. The chilies toast up and have an almost nutty flavor with a medium heat, easy to pick around if you like just mildly spicy food. I'm sold, other things on the menu are intriguing and I am ready to try more. Ginger fried pork looks delicious and a couple in the restaurant had a steaming hot pot with homemade rice noodles that looked amazing. It was clear that they enjoyed it. Might seem unassuming from the outside but this place is truly a hidden GEM! We ordered the cumin lamb which was perfectly seasoned with delicious, slightly crunchy veggies stir fried in. The Singapore noodles were top notch and also perfectly seasoned. Highly recommend the mixed veggie salad as well, super refreshing with a nice spicy kick. After months of delicious takeout, we had an opportunity to eat in today. The food of course was delicious and besides some steamed dumplings which are a must, we decided to stray from the traditional Americanized menu. I tried Yangzhou fried rice for the first time and the perfectly cooked ham was a welcome addition to my fried rice staples. My partner tried cumin chicken hearts which had a wonderful flavor. In recently moving to the area, I've been in a desperate search for delicious Chinese food and that craving has finally been met with NE Chinese. We ordered the twice cooked fish because it was highly recommended and the shrimp lo mein because it seemed like a safe bet. The noodles were on the oily side but still tasty with lots of big pieces of shrimp. The fish was excellent! Very spicy and packed with flavor. The twice-fried fish is outstanding. My complaint would be that the veggies that came with our dinner were still somewhat raw. Ordered delivery for the first time and was very impressed with how much flavor everything had. 10/10 would re-order. As a general matter everything arrived hot and fresh so your starting off pretty well. My order was as follows: Crispy Pork Dumplings - 5/5, pretty straight forward pork dumplings, ginger came thru and was more flavorful than your typical take out dumplings. Only knock would be they weren't that crispy but I'm reaching, texture was serviceable. Green beans w/Garlic - 5/5, green beans were tender and the dish was generally flavorful. Garlic is always a good compliment to green beans. Just a strong dish but nothing extraordinary, it's what you'd expect and it meets all expectations. If I could change one thing I'd have my green beans a little less tender actually but that's a personal preference. Spicy Pork w/ Cilantro - 5/5, flavor flavor flavor. Cilantro wasn't overpowering and appropriately incorporated with the dish. First thing you get is saltiness from the pork and then the cilantro comes on in a surprisingly mellow form. As you chew you get the meaty sweetness from the pork/pork fat. The portion size is what you'd expect and there was ample pork strips. I like spicy food so the chili's weren't a problem, If anything I could have done w/more. Yangzhou - 4.5/5, I actually liked this more than the spicy pork, but objectively I'm not sure it was composed as well. Overall it was incredibly tasty, rice was fluffy and light (similar to light fried rice I've had in NYC's Chinatown) and the addition of carrots, peas, egg added a delicate sweetness that I love. Only downside to this dish, and why I knocked of .5 is the balance of it all, there was actually too much meat(salt) for my taste. The sausage adds a nice salty contrast to the rice, eggs, and veggies, but they could be chopped just a bit smaller, add that with a saturation of chicken and it begins to feel less like fried rice. If I could have it my way there'd be less chicken and sausage and a tad more shrimp. Still very tasty though, would (and will) order again. Spicy Twice Cooked Fish - 5/5, This dish is why I ultimately decided to try this restaurant and it did not disappoint! Portion size was excellent, served w/bell pepper, onion, carrot, and chili's. Bell pepper and onion were chopped in the perfect size, cooked just right so they maintained their integrity but were still tender. Carrots could have been a little thicker but I'm really reaching. The fish was fantastic, fried appropriately and just the right size. The flavor profile is what will win you over, you get saltiness from the chili's and salt and you'd expect as much, but what you don't expect is this beautiful, light, delicate sweetness that actually hits your tastebuds first. It's a perfect one-two flavor combo, you get this unexpected sweetness and then immediately after your mouth is filled with a spicy saltiness with hints of onion and pepper and all us right in your mouth. This is by far the most authentic Chinese food in all of Columbus! Prices are about the same is average price and not too expensive. The portions are great. They are not overwhelming but they aren't skimpy either. They have an American Chinese food which I didn't try so I won't comment on that but their authentic dishes are amazing, extremely tasty, and their service was fairly fast.
