We love namsan ! My husband's mother is korean and when we are in town we come to namsan! Their dolsot bibimbap is phenomenal I cannot find anywhere that makes I like they do ! We also love their kimchi and their pancakes are awesome as well ! The traditional Korean dishes are such a comfort and we like that they haven't been Americanized like most other korean restaurants! I have always enjoyed this place and never understood why it isn't busier. Good service. They have done a lot of recent updates and renovation to the interior. I'm a huge fan of Korean cuisine. This is solid. I liked it better when it wasn't as upscale but the flavors are still quite good. It's always quiet but they put on cooking shows showing various world cuisine while you eat. As previous reviews have noted, don't let the immediately surrounding neighborhood discourage you from going. The food is fantastic. It's very authentic and not "Westernized". I had the galbi, which was perfect and sliced so that each bone was by itself (instead of in threes as typical), which makes it much easier to eat. All of the side dishes (banchan) were authentic as well. I went on a Monday night around 6 and the place was empty, but soon afterwards it filled up with regulars and people picking up take out - a good sign. read more

We decided to try Namasan after reading some great reviews and it surely did not disappoint. It's pretty new ~3 months since it opened and is run by a very sweet and caring family. At first we couldn't find a lot of vegetarian options but the owner was very kind to customize anything we wanted and substitute meat with veggies. We ordered the Kimchi pancake, bibimbap and hot stone soup. The quantity is a lot and the food was super delicious!! Kimchi pancake was huge but so delicious. It was packed with so many flavours. Bibimbap was super delicious as well and hot stone soup was amazing. This was one of the few times when we wanted to eat everything we saw haha. The owner came and checked in multiple times if we liked the food and even recommended food for my one year old! The place is nice and warm which makes one enjoy other meal even more. Very good! Went there on a weeknight around 7:30pm and we were the only ones dining at the time. We ordered the shrimp shumai, fried vegetable egg rolls, pork gyoza, kimchi pancake, and vegetable fried rice. A nice assortment of banchan for the table came out first. The shrimp shumai and vegetable fried rice were outstanding- my favorites. The fried rice had great texture and sesame flavor. The shrimp shumai were juicy and flavorful. The fried vegetable egg rolls were clean and crisp and the egg roll sauce was delicious. Overall, the meal was among the tastiest and most interesting food I've had in Kalamazoo. I'm looking forward to returning to Namsan to try the bibimbap and jap chae. Parking was easy and it's a great addition to the neighborhood. read more

The food here is very pricey and mediocre at best. I ordered the seafood soon du bu ($12), chicken fried rice ($10), and egg rolls ($5). Soon du bu: 2 small mussels and 1 prawn constituted all the seafood. Very odd texture in the soup. The kimchi that came with the soup was not great either. Chicken Fried Rice: very bland with no flavor. Had corn, green beans, carrots, and peas in it. They were from frozen vegetables. It was very clear they just used a bag of frozen mixed vegetables. Egg Rolls: very small, hardly any filling in them. Also, these weren't egg rolls. They didn't use the traditional egg roll wrappers. When it was all said and done, lunch cost over $30 for just 2 people. That would have been okay if the food was phenomenal. But this horribly mediocre food was not worth $30. read more

Just went there for lunch and it was really good. I had the soon dubu (soft tofu soup) and it was perfect on a cold winter day. The broth was flavorful, spicy, and full of seafood. I cant wait to go back and try more of the menu. It was our first time dining here and the food was excellent! I'm vegan and recently learned that I have a gluten sensitivity, so eating out can be a bit challenging. I had the Jap Chae with vegetables (gluten free by default, and they had no problem accommodating my vegan request as well). Super large portions and I had intentions of taking some home, but it was so good that I ended up eating all of it. Hubby had the Dak Gae Jang, and also said it was delicious (it arrives boiling hot... literally, so it took a few minutes before he could enjoy it). I live in Holland and everytime were in Kalamazoo we make it an effort to visit Namsam! We love their service everytime. My father is also a very picky eater and will only eat Cambodian food that our mother makes but he truly enjoyed the food from Namsam and that to me- says a lot. I gave two stars because at least they are still open and operating during covid. Unfortunately the $100 was not money well spent. Being from Chicago and having lived in Koreatown in Los Angeles I was thoroughly unimpressed and very disappointed . The galbi and bulgogi were extremely overcooked, the galbi being extremely dry. The mandu were a 6 out of 10, nothing memorable about them. The Budae stew (military stew) was probably the most disappointing dish. I advised my bf that it probably would not be a good dish to carry out but it was far worse than I expected. The flavor was seriously lacking and packing noodles in liquid is such a horrible idea. I figured they would pack them on the side like other carry out places I have been to. My mother got shrimp/veggie fried rice (which I know is not customary at Korean places) but If it's on the menu it should be good. I'll show you what that rice looked like... shrimp that was not clean and looks like it came from a can and frozen vegetables! Absolutely disgusting. Never again. read more

I had one of my first dates at a Chinese restaurant that once call this location home back in 1992, and I had a most awesome experience just two years ago when it was the auspices of Korea SY House. Didn't "get" a chance to check it out when it was briefly called Bulgogi Box -- I say didn't "get to" with quotes because by the time I became aware that they had changed hands, word on the street was that Bulgogi Box was just so-so. Fortunately, Namsan seem me like it's going to be the tastiest place yet in this Westnedge Hill location. Join the friend and her daughter for a late lunch here today, and we were all blown away by the yummy fish pancake appetizer (it's about the size of a large pizza and super filling) as well as our various entrees. I ordered a hot stone bowl bulgogi bibimbap, and it was everything I wanted it to be. The rice was just the right amount of crisp without being crusty, the bulgolgi tender and generously portioned, the fried egg over soft, and the ability to spice to your liking by adding various sauces, kimchi, and other veggie side such a lovely touch. The building itself has the same drab lack of ambiance as ever, but the cooking is the star here, and the owner such a sweetheart. This is an authentic Mom-and-Pop Korean restaurant replacing the old Korean SY House. Liked their Spicy Tofu Soup with Seafood and the Bulgogi. We thought they were very tasty though portion is a tad smaller than other Korean restaurants we have been to. The side dishes were always a plus! The location is by an awkward intersection and it is hard to see from the main road that it is a restaurant! Just had our first try at this Korean restaurant... after being underwhelmed by the ones that were in this space previously (like Bulgogi Box and Korea House). Hands down the best Korean food I've had since moving to Michigan!! Sunny, the owner, was so nice and fun to chat with too. The Japchae was delicious. I pulled up to a run down building that looks like it should be condemned.My daughter and I decided to still go in and not judge the book by its cover . This Korean restaurant has changed owners 4 or 5 times already. I loved the food when it was originally Lee's Garden but service was very slow. With Namsan, you get the best of both. My friends and I decided to share our orders of Beef Bibimbop, a spicy beef and vegetable soup Gae Jang (both served in a hot stone bowl, only way to go!) and my now favorite seafood noodle soup Jjam Bbong ( It has this smoky and spicy taste to it that makes the broth so flavorful. I think though that this is an acquired taste but if you're used to Asian flavors then you'll appreciate it. ) Portions are pretty big and food's served pretty quick for such complex dishes. Our server(thinking this nice lady is also the owner) was very attentive, she just keeps checking up on us. She said spread the word since she doesn't think a lot of people know they're open.
