I have been coming to this restaurant for years. It used to be located in Flushing, but it has relocated to Bayside. There has been more variety on the menu and the location has definitely expanded. I still ordered my favorite dishes (Chinese Egg Scallion Pancake, Beef Noodle Soup, and Soup Dumplings). I have to admit that I was disappointed in the Beef Noodle Soup, it was too oily. There was not enough flavor. Also, I still enjoyed the Chinese Egg Scallion Pancake and Soup Dumplings. The pancake was not too greasy and the egg was crispy. Very happy about TWO Nan Bei Hos! The Flushing branch is 1 of my fav restaurants, I LOVE their spicy beef noodle! These ppl have been in the restaurant biz for decades so they know their stuff. Came to this branch a handful of times already... It's clean and staff is friendly :) Some of our favorite dishes are: 3 cup chicken, Salt n pepper fish, Chinese brkfst items, etc... It's nice having a Taiwanese style Chinese restaurant in Bayside. Queens is dotted with little business blocks wedged into residential areas and NBH moved here from the hustle & madness that is downtown Flushing. It is unusual to find a sit down Chinese restaurant in neighborhoods that only have pork-fried-rice takeout joints. On a rainy Friday night, they were doing a brisk business and we were seated quickly. Even with a Cantonese/Taiwanese translation impediment we were able to order xiao lung bao (2 basket orders), scallion pancakes, pickled veggie & shredded pork noodle to start. We also got the family meal with 3 choices; peking pork chops, fish filet & diced chicken w/ peppers. On top of that, we also got the braised pork shoulder. Would you believe there was only 5 of us? Gawd, we were pigs! Even so, I wasn't too impressed with the food, especially the XLB. The soup was clear, not hearty & thick and was too gingery. Some had hardly any soup in them at all and they didn't offer the crab roe variety which is my favorite at other XLB places. I had high expectations of the pork shoulder, and it kinda fell flat. The meat, though fork tender, tasted like it was boiled in soup and the sauce couldn't save it. The pickled veggie & pork noodle was excellent though and reminded me of when my mom used to make it. I had one of the best meals of my life at Nan Bei Ho last night in Bayside. Thanks to the other reviewers, I got the beef noodle soup and it was one of the top 5 best soups I ever had in my life. The beef is a great cut, so flavorful and melts in your mouth. The broth is perfectly spiced (I went for the spicy, not medium spiced) and reminds me of Western Chinese spicy flavoring but not as greasy and overwhelming. The noodles were perfectly cooked and al dente...not soggy or overcooked as at many places; they remind me of Persian Ashe (traditional ancient persian noodle soup) noodles which are delicious and do not absorb the broth to become soggy. The watercress was incredible and balanced out the spice. The scallion and egg took me back to my grandmother's cooking (she would make her fried dough from scratch) and was ultimate comfort food and, again, not overly greesy: simply perfect (and i'm an egg fiend and feel I make them usually better than anyone). Finally, the steamed meat dumplings were also incredible. The flavor would transform in your mouth. I have no idea what the other reviewers are talking about. Sorry, however the low star rating reviewers really don't know what they're talking about. They seem either to not have experienced a breadth of Chinese cuisine or perhaps don't have the palate for it. I spend about 75% of my time thinking about, talking about, reading about and enjoying food, especially Chinese food....it's an obsession. I can't speak for all the dishes as I haven't eaten them, however I do believe that if you generally like Chinese cuisine and order the 4 dishes I mention above, which are pretty standard Chinese items (noodle soup, dumplings, sauteed greens, fried bread) I promise that you won't be disappointed. Finally, the tapioca tea was delish....esp the tapioca itself. Melt in your mouth tapioca.....almost like a delicate pudding dessert., as they were the freshest and most delicate I have had in my life. We used to come here all the time at their original location. Definitely welcome their reincarnation. Sesame Pancake takes over 30 minutes. Is it worth it? For a carb freak like me, yes. The crispy sesame top coupled with the scallion and black pepper chewy inside are a perfect supplement to the beef with peppers dish. Problem is, the dish takes FOREVER to come out. The manager explained that there aren't enough stovetops to cook these things. Can you invest in a dedicated burner, please? Beef noodle soup is awesome here. Authentic. Spicy if requested. Skip the fried chicken (they don't use dark meat like they're supposed to), get the crispy pork chops. Service has picked up substantially but they still have a lot to brush up on. My go-to place for Taiwanese beef noodle soup. I personally like the spicy one, but my boyfriend always gets the non-spicy. Both are delicious. It's a bit on the oily side, but the flavor is amazing. I'm pretty sure those things take 5 minutes to make and serve. The food itself is pretty good. The pan fried dumplings can't do any wrong. This is our goto restaurant for authentic Taiwanese breakfast. Yes, service is a wild card; we've had great service and we've had mediocre service but never terrible service. There is metered street parking in front as well as residential parking a few streets over. Parking has never been an issue for us. We've come on weekday and weekend mornings for breakfast, as well as bought breakfast to go. The xiaolongbaos are eh - adequate for these parts but not spectacular. I love the potstickers 開口鍋貼 as they are freshly made with handmade skins. The rice rolls 飯糰, shaobing 燒餅, egg scallion pancake 蛋餅, chives bun 韭菜盒子, beef scallion pancake 牛肉夾餅 are all fantastic. We've also had their beef noodle soup 牛肉麵 and pork chop noodle 排骨麵 which taste pretty authentic as well. I love myself some good Taiwanese food, and have realized that it is pretty hard to find a good place that is consistent with the food quality. This place was really good the first time we went. Everything we ordered was great and the food was served quickly. That made us crave to go bad a second time - which ended up being a huge disappointment. Not only is the food here on the pricey side but apparently when you bring up a concern to the lady - who I am assuming is the owner, they make a scene around you. We ordered pepper and salt Pork chop which ended up being soooo salty ( I know salt is part of the name but DAMN it was salty) When this was brought to the attention of the manager she tried to show us some Worcestershire sauce that they supposedly make it with... and in the process of yelling about how its supposed to taste as salty as it does she spit while yelling all over our table!.... :- / This isn't the first time I've tried this dish, and even if it was, there is no way a human could consume this salt covered piece of pork. And while they did take away the dish after 10min of talk/yelling.... It was still very uncomfortable. Will not be ordering this dish again. Oh and speaking of uncomfortable apparently if you are non-Asian they will automatically assume you NEED a fork. And announce it too. Not to say that its not thoughtful.... just don't scream it out. I used to come to this place for dinner so often, I'm so sad to see it going downhill. Ever since their main chef left, the quality and taste of the food here has been slipping and slipping... I went again a few weeks back and I'm so sorry that I have to update my review and give it 2 stars. It was close to dinner time but as we walked in, all of the kitchen staff were seated by the wall in their aprons and hat, this is a very bad sign usually. Another time I walked by the restaurant and some of the chefs were squatting or sitting along the outside wall of the restaurant. I don't think that's the right image for the restaurant. But on the food, the sautéed pork with bamboo tasted little sour and could use a lot more salt. The sa cha vegetable was Wayyy too salty and I didn't taste the sa cha flavor at all, the beef pancake was not good at all, that used to be may favorite favorite dish but not anymore there... This is the restaurant that I always think about when I want to eat beef noodle soup. It's so good, served in a huge bowl, and did I mention that it's my favorite place to get beef noodle soup? Whenever I go to a restaurant where beef noodle soup is pretty popular, I find that nothing beats the one here. The potstickers are also amazing and I always order the cucumbers. I came here on a Friday. According to the store posters, they open at 11. I got there at exactly 11:27. Walked in, to the left was the cashier who seemed like she was on the phone with Verizon arguing about the phone bill. She didn't greet us or smile, her name is Alice. We stood there for 2 minutes then we decided to sit down at a table. As we walk to the tables, the floor is mildly sticky and the stank of grease of a restaurant is almost unforgettable. The tables, of course was sticky as well. The dinning room lights were off so we were just sitting in the dark. For a couple of minutes of course. Then a lady in a pink shirt (waitress)? Came over and bought us a kettle of tea. And finally the menu. It was already starting to feel uncomfortable because we felt utterly unwelcome. We ordered 豆漿which in translation comes to be soy milk. In actuality, when it came, it was like mushed up tofu. There was I soy milk in sight. I then ask the waitress and she told me this is how they serve it. When I asked her to change it to actual soy milk, she complained and told me I'd have to pay for this one as well if she were to bring me another one. Our fried squid came. It was really really good. It was Salt and pepper with a bit of fried garlic. It was light just as expected and how I remembered it. We also got a stinky tofu. I've had a lot of stinky tofu in my time and this was nothing special. It tasted like stinky tofu but surely, nothing was phenomenal about this particular one. When all is done, I requested for the check by waiting and then finally saying "excuse me" and no one came for the longest time. It was finally when I got up to walk to the kitchen door did someone come out and asked me what I wanted. It was a terrible experience and I would probably never go back again unless absolutely necessary. Also, we were eating in silence while listening to the chefs fighting in the kitchen. Little did we know, as we were leaving, another couple came in, and that's when they finally decided to turn the music on. Terrible service, terrible food, and very unsanitary. There were so many tables available and they seated us right next to the bathroom. We immediately requested to be moved to another table. Waiters were extremely rude and threw dishes on the table where the food would slide almost off the plate and onto the table. We ordered shanghai style lo mein, but for $8.25, there were only a few pieces of shrimp and abnormally small scallops. The noodles were very chewy, almost like they were half cooked. Worst of all, when we asked for a bowl of rice, the waitress brought it to us with her fingers inside the bowl touching the rice. We noticed other waiters/waitresses doing the same for other patrons. With that being said, I will take this as the neighborhood is quieter and less busy than Flushing. Soup Dumplings were decent-to me the skin was too thick but the other Taiwanese breakfast bites were pretty good. It can get crowded on the weekends for breakfast and you might to wait awhile. Still disappoint, I had it for dinner with friend. I was going to offer 1 star, but they have one dish is worth to eat. That is Chinese water cress with shredded beef. One of appetizer "Taiwanese pop corn chicken" it's mad salty. They just put salt in it. In Taiwan they have special power for that. I guess as Taiwanese food restaurant they forgot about that. The steamed meat buns tasted like it came from a frozen Chinese supermarket brand. The fried noodle and thick noodle dishes (Taiwan Style) were probably the only good dishes. Note: I'm a big ol 阿凸仔 who lived in Taiwan many years ago. Anyway, I took my moms and pops here for the first Taiwanese food of their life. It's a pretty no frills joint and as many others have said, it is probably hit and miss with many dishes. So, after reading the reviews on Yelp, we got: 蛋餅 - ok. Kind of flavorless, but that's sort of what it is, right? Wanted to give my folks a taste of breakfast food. 臭豆腐 - tasty! A bit sharper than many others I have tried. My mom even liked it. And I don't think it was just polite waspy New England words. 蚵仔煎 - good. Sort of wanted to be a bit more runny. The overall taste was good though. 椒鹽魚片 - delicious. I'm a sucker for this dish. It's kind of hard to hate deep fried fish. 空心菜沙茶牛肉絲 - best dish of the meal. Deep flavor with great balance between the kong xin cai and the beef. 三杯雞 - tender and tasty. Great flavor. Overall, a very satisfying meal for not much money. It was also nice to see good old friends of families bumping into one another in the restaurant. It is a neighborhood joint. Also, parking was a snap. And, the left over three cup chicken mixed with cut up leftover stinky tofu and reheated made a great lunch the next day. read more
