I liked the pan fried buns but my bf wasn't a fan of the flavor. I thought the soup dumplings were a but bland but my bf liked them so really depends on your preference. Since this is the express version, you use the kiosk to order and they bring food to your table and you busk your own table when you're done. I like that even though its express, the soup dumplings still come out in steamer baskets. I decided to try something new, and after reading the reviews and ratings, I was even more inspired to check out Nan Xiang Express. Thankfully, the food did not disappoint. I ordered the braised beef and noodles, which was good--especially after recently having some of the best braised beef and noodles in Vegas. The beef was tender, and everything was well-seasoned. I also tried the chicken and shrimp siu mai, which was delicious, though I wish it had come with a sauce. The crispy pork chop with rice was incredibly mid; the "garlic broccoli" lacked any flavor, and the accompanying sauce was just ok...probably would've been better warm. I didn't realize they had opened an express location Downtown, Brooklyn on Lawerence street which is fast becoming known for small Asian chains adding a location I happened to walk by and decided to have some soup dumplings You place your order at the kiosk indicating if it's dine in or takeout enter a table number and wait for your food. Id it's soup dumplings prepare for a bit off a wait since they are steamed. I've long considered the original Nan Xiang to be my favorite soup dumplings in the city. Despite the commonplace enshittification that ensues when most great local spots expand and scale, I am happy to report that these soup dumplings are still amazing. There are lots of options. There's chicken soup dumplings, the pork and crabmeat versions, even spicy beef soup dumplings (haven't tried these yet)...I'm getting the classic pork every time. If you want to mix it up dumpling wise, I also like the crispy bottom pork buns and the pot stickers, but nothing beats the signature soup dumplings. That said, I have been VERY pleasantly surprised by the chicken stir fried noodles. The udon is excellent, with a lovely chew on the noodles. I also like to get the garlic smashed cucumber salad, and they recently added a crispy sesame chicken bowl that hits that bad but good Chinese food craving that we all have from time to time. It's not my favorite place to dine in; not because it's counter service (the staff are actually very nice), not because it's not comfortable and clean and nice, but because the Express means you're getting most of your food in takeout containers, creating more waste than is really necessary. I found it a pleasant surprise that Nan Xiang opened up an express location here in Downtown Brooklyn. While they are more well-known for their soup dumplings, I was in the mood for some pan fried soup dumplings, or sheng jian bao. These, for the uninitiated, are steamed buns with a juicy pork filling that get pan fried until crispy on the bottom. At Nan Xiang Express, you can either order at the kiosk or at the counter, and the sheng jian bao are called D1- pork crispy bottom buns ($8.95). I thought they had a very lovely crispy bottom but found the dough to filling ratio a little off. However, the house chili oil pairs wonderfully with the buns. I also ordered the D7- pork, shrimp, and chive dumplings ($7.95) to go as well. The dumplings were juicy but a little overseasoned. While this is an express location, the food does take some time to prepare. If you are in a hurry and expecting fast casual speeds, I would not recommend Nan Xiang Express. However, if you have a few extra minutes to spare, the food is freshly prepared and makes a perfect quick lunch. read more

Nan Xiang Express is a speedy version of the soup dumpling darling in Flushing with several locations in the city. The xiao long bao (XLB) are the highlight of the menu and for an "express" order of 8 minutes, was pretty darn tasty. The Downtown Brooklyn location is new, bright, modern, and great for casual dining. If soup dumplings are new to you, they are a Shanghainese specialty. Xiao Long Bao are steamed dumplings that have a flavorful broth inside, which requires a delicate serving and eating method (see the poster on the wall when you get there). Please do not stab the dumplings with a fork, you'd make my grandmother cry. Pork and crab are traditional, but they also offer plain pork, chicken, and beef. As of March 2024, you get 6 dumplings for $10, which is a good deal, as these are notoriously tricky to make. For the price, speed, and the solid takeout quality, these are worth it. The dining room is beautiful, bright, modern, and clean. At lunch time on a Wednesday, only three of the 8 tables were occupied, and I love how they have a little bench for the take out people can chill. The tables and chairs are comfortably spaced and supportive, unlike the bulky benches at predecessor Yaso Tangbao (RIP). Please remember to clean up your table yourself and bus your trays to the bar to the left. Food packaging is also delightfully thoughtful, pretty, and effective at carrying these delicate morsels to their ultimate demise. Service was efficient, menu was well labeled and bright. They also have a self service kiosk if you don't feel like human-ing today. I am reserving a star to try more of the menu. The XLB were excellent and I would eat those again in a heartbeat. read more

We were soooooo happy with our visit to Nan Xiang Express. Love the original Nan Xiang for their soup dumplings and it's great to have a spot to enjoy them without schlepping to Flushing. Also had pork buns (great), beef scallion pancakes (excellent), pork udon noodles (perfect chewy noodles, great sauce) and a passionfruit tea (currently free with purchase of $20 or more but might be a New Years' special). Everything came in nice packaging that made it easy to bring home leftovers. One weird quibble - actual napkins are needed. They only have tissues on the table. This is as honest as possible Rating: (2/5) I came here expecting to be wowed based on the glowing reviews--but honestly? Mid at best. Let's start with the highlight: the crab & pork soup dumplings. Easily a 9/10. The texture was spot on--soft yet structured, with a flavorful broth that held up well. I didn't get much of a crab taste, but they still met my expectations for what good soup dumplings should be. Props where it's due. Then it started going downhill. The cucumber salad? Overhyped. Everyone was raving about it, but it had zero flavor. I had to add vinegar, soy sauce, and chili oil just to get something out of it. I'll give it a 6.5/10 because it was fresh and crunchy--and on a hot day, that counts for something. The grapefruit peach tea? Another flop. No flavor, no sweetness. Just cold liquid tea no flavor. 6/10 only because it seemed to be made with real fruit. Now the part that really killed the vibe: there was a fly inside the vinegar bottle that's open to the public --absolutely unacceptable. A newer, smaller branch of these awesome XLB crafters, my wife and I made a pit stop here before dinner at De Kalb. We split an order of original XLB and hot soy milk and both hit the spot. The former was just as derricious as I remembered with thicker yet pillowy soft skins and vibrant savory flavors that put Din Tai Fung and other competitors to shame. Dumplings are so good. Nice and hot. I like how spacious it is and there's lots of seatings. They also have vegetable dumplings. And soy milk. Had jury duty a few blocks away and wanted to eat something comforting. You can self-order at a kiosk and the food comes out pretty quickly. I got the combo A set which came with scallion oil noodles, pork soup dumplings and soy milk. The noodles were pretty awful, very mushy and there was no scallion fragrance in the oil, just tasted like regular oil coated on mushy and bland noodles. The soup dumplings were below average, the dough was not good and very mushy and not a thin chewy texture. The meat was decent and had a decent amount of broth in it which was a saving grace. I do have to say the vinegar is very good here and has a nice balance. Soy milk was also pretty good and tasted fresh and authentic. Overall, would not come back here as the food is below average.
