On my planned staycation to Fort Worth I wanted to try a small business to support. I was also craving a piece of HOT fried fish. I came across Nama's Kitchen ON YELP. We had the pleasure of meeting Nana herself. Me and my mom enjoyed speaking with her. She was pleasant and friendly. I loved how she was very down to earth. My mom took a photo with her. My server was the sweetest and most polite person. She checked on me and my mom multiple times. She was friendly and helpful. So I must say my service was welcoming and AMAZING! I felt like part of the family! Now it's not a fancy place, but it was clean and cozy. Like a mom and pops place. Condiments are provided on the table. Even roses that were real are in a vase. You can dine in or they have a carry out side. Well I chose fish since that's what I wanted. The 2 piece filet meal comes with 2 sides. They will bring your food out in a plastic container. So if you have left overs it's already set to go. The food came out hot and fresh. The fish was fried nicely. I wish it was seasoned a bit more for my liking. It was pretty good though. It was a great size and again fried to perfection. The hush puppies were really tasty. The fried corn fritter was delicious. The pickled tartar sauce was unique and I loved it. OMG the cabbage was so DAMN GOOD! This stole the show. It was cooked perfectly and seasoned with love. It touched my soul and I wanted to lick my container. The Mac and Cheese was a NO for me. It was like black pepper and cheese sauce. It was just blah and II didn't even eat it. However, others may like it, but it wasn't that great. Sorry Nana! Overall I had a good visit! I will definitely come back and EAT when in the area. The cabbage won me over. I left feeling happy and full. The southern hospitality was FANTASTIC!

Stopped by Nana's Kitchen during my MLK weekend trip to Fort Worth, and it was a soul food highlight! I got the two-piece catfish with sweet potatoes and mac & cheese--fish fried to crunchy perfection on the outside, juicy and full of flavor inside. My son loved his honey BBQ wing special with fries; the sauce had just the right sweet kick. The place sparkled with cleanliness--even the restroom smelled fresh like citrus. Bussers kept tables wiped down constantly, and the staff was super friendly, checking in to make sure we had everything. Met the owner too; she's genuinely warm and customer-focused, which made the vibe even better. If it weren't an hour from Dallas, I'd be weekly. Fort Worth soul food done right--thanks for the love! Tip: Go hungry; portions are generous.

Just had it and want more!! Got it to go but there is plenty of indoor seating. everything was so good! 1 catfish filet Yams Mac and cheese Greens Roll or cornbread And I got the Sweet Tea!

We end up leaving for a couple reasons. When we first arrived not greeted but asked if we were doing to-go or dine in (I'm not saying people don't have bad days but your at work, cheer up). We chose dine-in and when we got to the table asking to pay before I even ordered food is a little bit much. Why not just take the order when we walked in. I still looked over the menu to kinda feel out the vibe and service. Well I attempted to order the chicken fried chicken the waitress asked did I want Brown or White gravy. I then asked were both homemade and she hesitated as if I asked something wrong and kinda a blank look. And at this point I knew we wouldn't be staying. I did order 2 sides just to try and give a review besides the service. I ordered the greens and sweet potatoes to go. So is the sit anywhere and pay now normal?? (My first visit)

Ordered the fish combo (*included 1 fish filet and 6 shrimp) with greens and fries and cornbread. The cornbread was cold and didn't looked done. The shrimp was cold, fish was okay but I've had better. The greens were ok but had better. Asked for some hot cornbread and they stated, they were making it fresh and it came back out just heated and not made fresh..still showing not being cooked thoroughly. Fries were supposed to be the crinkle cut and they were shoestring. Asked for plain water..received water with lemon. The cake was not fresh. My two girlfriends food was terrible too..they ordered the meatloaf and baked chicken and it was not very tasty. The baked chicken was overcooked and the meatloaf was too thick and not tasty. The waitresses kept forgetting items that we needed. The atmosphere was ok. I will never come here again.

Went for the biscuits, but our very wise waitress, Adriana, warned us that the biscuits were made with lard. Well that knocked out a bunch or breakfast options. She was so sweet and actually went to the kitchen and marked the menu pointing out lard-free menu choices. On the menu. Using black ink dots. Above and beyond. So we regrouped our breakfast plans and went mainly vegetarian. The Herbivore was absolutely delicious! Antebellum cheese grits topped with garlicky kale, romanesco and a soft boiled egg. We added a second egg. Split with my hubby. So good!! My sister-in-law had the brioche French toast. French toast topped with honey better, fresh berries and pecan granola. Served with maple syrup. Amazing! Added the duck fat breakfast potatoes. Who knew that the flavor would be so enhanced with the onions, peppers and duck fat. Get this side! Not a coffee drinker, but my hubby really enjoyed the coffee that is sourced from Cusco, Peru. Adriana made sure that the cups were always full and hot. Thank you for the VIP service at Fixe Southern House. Resident discount applied. Born from Opelousas, Louisiana, breakfast served with a huge helping of southern hospitality. We started with the biscuits and cinnamon roll. I would recommend both. The biscuits came with a jam, honey and whipped butter. The cinnamon roll, which may look a bit underwhelming had a such a great crispy texture on the outside while still being fluffy on the inside. The icing wasn't too sweet and complimented the roll nicely. For the table, we had the pollo frito biscuit w/duck fat potatoes, Brisket Benedict w/okra and the Fixe Breakfast entree w/maple sausage and potatoes. The pollo Frito was delicious, the chicken was seasoned well and maintained crunch even within the biscuit. Duck fat potatoes were also good but were even better after adding some salt. The brisket benny was okay, the texture of the brisket was very odd and didn't really hold up to the egg. Although the okra had a great flavor the batter was a bit too thick which made it chewy. The Fixe breakfast was great and the maple sausage was perfect. Our waitress was Adriana, she was great and very helpful. Overall we would definitely come back and look forward to trying dinner one night.

I ordered the pork chop plate, and the server kindly let me try both a fried pork chop and a smothered one since I couldn't make up my mind. I also had fried cabbage and yams. The cabbage had a little unexpected heat to it, but that's actually the same way my family cooks theirs, so I ended up really enjoying it. One thing that stood out to me was the staff. I'm not sure if the restaurant is always staffed this way, but I was genuinely impressed that all the front-line workers were men -- and every single one of them was courteous, respectful, patient, and mindful of each customer. While I enjoyed my meal, I watched them treat each person who walked in with the same positive energy and attentiveness. If you're in the area, go support this restaurant. They are located on a corner and parking is limited. I found street parking on the side street, about a block down in front of a house. We walked inside Gus's about 11:30 am on a Wednesday. They were busy' but had a number of open tables. There are mostly square and rectangular 4-top tables. We chose one by the front windows. A moment after we sat down, our server, Joe K came by to greet us and he took our drink order. Menu's are at the table, so we studied a bit and were ready for Joe when he brought our drinks. I ordered: - Unsweetened Iced Tea - 3 Piece Dark Chicken Plate (my choice: leg, leg, thigh) with Greens and BBQ Beans My wife ordered: 2 Piece White Chicken Plate (breast, wing) with Mac-Cheese and BBQ Beans The chicken was the star for sure. The BBQ Beans weren't special but were decent. The Greens, decent. With each meal plate, the chicken is served on a slice of white bread. The chicken was fried to a deep brown and was real tasty. My dark meat was juicy and tender. My wife's white meat was drier but normal for white meat. My wife's felt the chicken skin was maybe overcooked as it was tough. It was fine to me. I ate her skin :) We'll be back to Gus's!

The meat was very bland, and some of my favorite items from previous visits were not available. I understand that restaurants can change their menus or run out of certain items, but combined with the lack of flavor, it made the overall meal less enjoyable. What was even more disappointing, however, was the customer service. The woman who appeared to be part of the ownership was once again rude and unprofessional. We never felt rushed, which I really appreciated. I started lunch by ordering another cocktail (which may or may not have had me buzzing a little by this point) along with the 12 oz. prime rib steak served with buttery herb mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and chimichurri sauce. I'll admit, the steak was thinner than I expected for Texas (I sort of anticipated a Flintstones-sized slab of beef) but honestly? It was fantastic. Juicy, flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth tender and cooked perfectly! The mashed potatoes were rich and even the vegetables were great! My dining companions ordered a bit lighter fare, I believe a salad and grilled cheese, but I was far too focused on my steak situation to pay close attention. I left absolutely stuffed and very, very, very happy about it. The atmosphere here is upscale without feeling pretentious. Between the Western inspired decor and the relaxed energy of the Stockyards area, it feels welcoming. Also worth noting: apparently bachelorette parties featuring men in cow-print overalls are welcome here too, so truly something for everyone. Great service, great food, and a really enjoyable dining experience overall. I'd happily come back the next time I find myself in Fort Worth!
