Chef's Corner provided complimentary chicken and waffles for Fort Worth ISD teachers today at lunch and everything was amazing. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and very welcoming upon entry and the staff is absolutely amazing. We were sat quickly, and our server, Kimberly, was friendly, fast, and made sure we were well taken care of. The food was always delicious. The collard green and spinach dip and fried pickles were ordered as appetizers and both were very tasty. I especially enjoyed the naan bread chips that came with the dip. Other sides that my party ordered included cabbage, collard greens, yams, and the honey butter cornbread. Everything was hot, well seasoned, and delicious. I will go back and happily pay full price. The food was terrible. The catfish was straight out of an old bucket way to swampy. The shrimp and grits were way too salty. Tasted like it was scraped from the bottom of the pot, but it was too early not past 12 noon. The boudin balls tasted like something was freezer burned... like it was frozen and popped in the microwave. But I should have known better when the ranch tasted like a bottle of wishbone and not fresh made ranch. The waitress was not the best. When I advised that the food was not up to par, no manager came to check on the issue, apologize, or try and correct what was wrong. The drinks were not even good. We then had to wait for the manager to come in just to explain the "rules," including a required deposit. Let me be clear: money was never the issue, so the reason for emphasizing it was unnecessary. Our party consisted of approximately 25 people, yet only one server was assigned to our table. He did his absolute best, and this is no fault of his. The manager was present but never stepped in to assist with taking orders or helping the server. We were seated at 3:17 PM. My order wasn't taken until 30 minutes later, and the food didn't arrive until another 40 minutes after that. When it finally came, the food was cold. It was corrected--but then the cornbread was brought out cold as well. I still left a tip, because again, this is not about the waiter. Since I was doing a staycation in Fort Worth this was a perfect opportunity to try a small business in the area. I love supporting minority businesses. Chef's Corner did not disappoint. Food: I give it 4 STARS Chicken and Waffles presentation was great. The chicken was piping hot and well seasoned. The waffles were soft and the sweet sauce served with it was delicious. The portion was huge and worth the money. The gumbo was yummy and full of flavor. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the taste. It warmed my soul and I felt it was made with love. The cocktails were good too. The margarita was my favorite. It was well made and the tajin rim was the magic touch. The peach henny was ok. It wasn't very peachy and for the cost it should have been better. The margarita was cheaper and was the better drink. Service: I give it 4 STARS My waitress was pleasant and friendly. My first visit to Chef's Corner was a little unexpected--I pulled up to a gas station thanks to Google Maps, but thankfully found their beautiful new location in a nearby plaza. The space is bright, open, and super clean. Perfect spot for a family send-off meal before my mom headed to the airport. We ordered: Collard green dip to start--bomb! And the bread served with it? Amazing. Would love to know what it's called again!? Mom and daughter had the grilled salmon with mashed potatoes--clean and flavorful. Cousin had fried shrimp and catfish over grits with sausage--Southern comfort at its finest. I ordered the fried catfish platter with fries, greens, and mac & cheese. My sides came out first, but my main was delayed. Thankfully, my Hennessy "Henny lemon drop" kept me company while I waited. One thing I really appreciated--the greens were made with turkey, not pork. So many places default to pork, so this was a thoughtful touch that didn't go unnoticed. Unfortunately, the mac and cheese was a 0/10 it tasted like boxed mac and cheese, and the kitchen really needs to come up with a better recipe. The food is pretty good. Ambiance and decor is quite nice, it has a classy jazz feel to it and they play sports on their tv's which I enjoy. Where the restaurant loses me is the service. It was very slow, waiter wasn't really polite either. The food doesn't make up for the service.
