I love NaRa! Watching the amazing chef create your dinner is a lot of fun...but I LOVE the soups here!

Fantastic food and GREAT service! This is our choice place for date night! Rolls are fantastically large and yummy! 2 rolls feeds both my husband and I! It's a great atmosphere and friendly people. You don't go to Nara and expect it to be out "quick" I don't know ANY good sushi place that is "fast" it usually is a wait--- Sushi is an art! I am from California and have eaten a LOT of sushi in my life-- and NARA by far is the BEST sushi I have EVER EVER HAD! YUM! We try to go at least once a week-- but if not-- we definitely make it at least 1x a month! read more

Very good sushi miso soup was best I've had. Shrimp Temura was slightly underdone. Jackie chan roll awesome. Slightly too large for chop sticks . Eel and sauce superb. Would recommend read more

I was in Billings for Business and I stopped in at 2:00 pm for lunch. The woman at the front had this scowl and said they only have sushi right now. I said 'Fine, no problem.' She then proceeded to tell me the wait would be 30 minutes--there were 3 people in the restaurant. I turned on my heel and left. read more

The owner Dae is far beyond a chef and is deep into the the realm of artistry. Food is always spectacular and easily stands up to much more expensive sushi bars in large cities. Impossible to order anything bad here and it is a true family business with multiple generations of dedicated ownership resulting in an authentic Billings treasure. Dont miss it!!! read more

Had dinner here twice this week while on business in Billings. Had the jackie chan sushi roll and it was excellent- spicy, flavorful and went well with my Kirin. Second night chef Dae made me a meal off the menu, sushi included lobster, eggs, avocado, bacon..etc. It was delicious, too. Generous portions and quality is second to none.The staff is great, friendly and the place is clean and inviting. If you're here by yourself, sit by the bar and carry a conversation with the chef while he prepares your sushi. Will definitely stop here next time I'm in the area. read more

Ate here for the first time this week on a cold winter evening, and I thought the food was outstanding. I opted to try something from their Korean menu as opposed to the sushi, as eating sushi 1,000 miles away from the ocean freaks me out a little bit. I got the Kimchi stir-fry, and I was shocked by how delicious it was. I think even my Korean-born friend would have loved this food. I'll be back for sure. read more

I've eaten here twice, and the results have been mixed, but generally positive. My first visit to Nara was for takeout. My girlfriend and I ordered two sushi rolls, and two orders of salmon nigiri. Our greeter was friendly, and our call-in order was timed just as they said it would be. Unfortunately, when we got home with our food, we found that there was no ginger or wasabi in our to-go containers. I had to hop back in the car, and drive across downtown to go back and get it. The staff was very apologetic, and gave us a $10 gift card with our condiments. The food was well above average--especially for this town. The nigiri, in particular, was outstanding. Our second visit, we dined in. Our server was almost overbearingly friendly and attentive, but I guess that beats the rudeness I've read about in some of these reviews. As a fan of local craft beers, I was bummed to see that NaRa's beer list is painfully short, and nothing but imports. I believe they would benefit greatly from a slightly expanded selection that includes some of our fantastic local brews. The atmosphere is very warm and inviting, but I don't really see the need for a gigantic HDTV blaring ESPN to the dining room. Save that for the sports bars. We were warned that the wait for sushi was long--despite the fact that the dining room was only about half-full. We ordered two rolls, two nigiri, and a vegetable tempura dish; while settling (myself somewhat reluctantly) for a couple of imported Japanese beers. The tempura was delicious, and served to whet our appetites for the meal we ordered.....which we didn't get until almost 40 minutes later. Despite the long wait, our rolls and nigiri were once again quite good. I grew up in the Puget Sound area, where there are many excellent sushi bars. NaRa's food compares favorably with nearly every one of them. My only gripe is their use of ground tuna, which simply doesn't appeal to me. I personally didn't experience any sticker-shock from the prices, but one should be prepared to spend $60-$80 (including tip) on dinner for two, which is a little steep compared to some of the cheaper sushi bars in Billings. Altogether, I would recommend NaRa to anybody in Billings looking to get their sushi fix, and with a few small improvements it could become a destination restaurant. read more

Nara is my favorite Restaurant in Billings! Whenever I visit, I eat there as often as possible. The food is fantastic! I am not sushi person, but many people I know say they have the best in town. The waitress is always extremely good to us. She jokes with my parents and knows our orders by heart. I love going to Nara. They are always the highlight of my trips to Billings. We've been eating at Nara ever since they opened 20 years ago. They have always had the best Spicy Tuna Roll around. However Dae has taken sushi to the next level with his specialty rolls. My husband and I had lunch at Nara yesterday and ordered our usual Spicy Tuna Roll and decided on the Jackie Chan specialty roll which was amazing. We also shared an order of Gyoza and the Crunchy Salmon. It was the best meal we've had in a long time. One of my hubby's favorites is the Chicken Yakisoba. The prices have increased some but I don't mind paying a little extra for great food. read more

Had very modest expectations for Billings sushi while here on a business trip. NaRa was excellent. The sushi was very fresh, well presented and huge portions. I also really enjoyed the chun (Korean egg pancake with vegetables). The wait staff is very friendly, likes the food they serve and makes the whole experience fun. I will definitely come back for more. read more

Have been coming to Nara for over 15 years! The sushi chef, Dae, is always willing to modify sushi rolls. Everything is delicious! I must say that the gyoza is the best I have ever had. There have been many changes over the years. All of them for the better! Highly recommend trying it if you haven't already. read more

My wife and I had dinner here for the first time Friday (12/16/11) and I have to say we really enjoyed it. I love Sushi and the wife, no so much. Wife had a teriyaki chiken that was simple but very tasty and good. The Miso soup was excellent and her salad was good as well. I had a spicy tuna roll and an order of tuna Nigiri. The Spicy tuna roll was the best I have ever had and quite large. The Tuna Nigiri was huge. Easily three times the size of any other place I have ever had Sushi. It was fresh and tasty and really good. We will definitely be returning One thing to note. They used to only serve Sushi during Lunch hours. That is not the case any more. They are serving the full menu now for lunch as well. Oh, and the service was very friendly. My only possible complaint would have been IF I had wanted more Sushi it would have taken a while to get it ordered. Thankfully, though, I was so full from the roll and the huge pieces of tuna that I was good to go. read more

Caveat emptor: I am from Billings and am rating this restaurant based on this landlocked state and city offerings. First of all, the restaurant is now under new ownership, and the staff are simply super friendly to their customers. They have rewarded customer loyalty with several all-you-can-eat sushi nights. The conversation at the bar with the main sushi chef is always entertaining, and the waitress is always friendly, courteous, and attentive. The Japanese food is good. I would highly recommend the Katsu Donburi, as it is probably the most underrated item on the menu. Their combination platter is very tasty, and features several items from their menu. Don't forget the gyoza appetizer. The Korean food is excellent. Bulkogi is a staple, but I have only the highest praise for their Seafood Chun. Unfortunately, it has a slightly limited availability. Definitely a large portion, though...enough for a great breakfast the next day! The sushi just makes me happy. The chef is very creative and has created some originals I've never seen elsewhere. His nacho roll is a full meal in and of itself, but I have never tasted a roll or nigiri I didn't enjoy. read more

Very good sushi, sushi rolls and other entrees. The servers are very friendly, and let you know you're welcome. It's hard to leave here without a smile on your face. Sometimes the food prep takes some time (not the serving staff), but I think that is due to the number of phone orders that they get in addition to the seated customers. Atmosphere is warm, intimate and relaxed, and not rushed at all. Beer and wine available, so just have some sake and enjoy your time. It's downtown, so that's a plus for some. read more

I've done sushi bars in Europe and California. All were amazing experiences. I haven't eaten sushi since a bad experience in Bozeman last September. Well I decided to give it a shot again. A friend recommended NaRa. One of the first things I notice is the atmosphere when I walk in to a place. Yes, it's small on the inside, a lot of the best ones I have eaten in were small on the inside. I sat at the bar to watch some sports, a basket ball game was on. I asked if there was a hockey game on and one of the chefs changed it as soon as I asked. The hostess/waitress was awesome. I ordered an Ashia beer and had it within seconds. After reviewing the menu for about 5 minutes I was ready to order. I waited about 25 minutes for my main course. My sushi was ready in about 10 minutes after I ordered my food. While waiting, you can actually have an intelligent conversation with the chefs and others. I know this isn't Seattle, Vancouver, Los Angels, New York, Miami, or Europe and Japan. This is Billings Montana. For a land locked area this place is a pretty amazing place to eat sushi. I will be gladly be going back to eat here. read more

I have lived all over North American and when I moved to Montana I assumed there would not be very good sushi bars. I tried a few places and was very disappointed. Then I heard of NaRa. Dae's creative style of sushi is something I have never had at sushi bars. I would bring any of my friends from the coast and they would be impressed. If you want to know what real good sushi taste like try out NaRa. It is the only place I go when I am in Billings. read more
