Wellllllllll...it's really four stars, considering just the food, but the service by the waitress brings it down a coupla notches. She's just not a very friendly gal, or even a people person, it would seem. Or she's just selective about to whom she's courteous. We got the 'curt' version of her personality. Anyhow, poor waitressing aside, the sushi is actually quite good here. I was really hesitant about trying sushi in this landlocked mountain state but was pleasantly surprised. We had the tuna and salmon sashimi plus the yellowtail roll, and it seemed pricey initially, but hey, for the quality, it was worth it - better (and cheaper!) than having to fly to a more metropolitan area like San Fran or Seattle or Denver for raw fish. read more

Great food and large portion sizes. The miso soup has great flavor and you have to try the dikon (pickled radish). The tables are close so you might feel a little tight; they use every bit of space. Will go back the next time I am in town. read more

Wow! The sushi bar is fantastic! This place is an old gas station, so its on the small side. The tables are somewhat close together, but makes for a "cozy" atmosphere. It is usually very busy, so expect to wait a short time for a table. But, it's worth the wait! read more

Biggest fucking joke ever. Got there at 7:45 and we were turned away. We were told they were done. Just done. "All out" to be exact. Don't run a special if you can't handle the demand . Mistakes happen I suppose but you close at 9 and it was a table request of 2. And how do you know we were even in for sushi you never asked? Maybe we wanted a spring roll and sake? Mind blown. This place is special. The sushi is spectacular. It is definitely on the more expensive side of sushi places but you get what you paid for. Sushi size is huge and flavors certainly pop. Get their special rolls, the rolling red is awesome although I wish the top layer of seafood was not fried. But regardless, really good food and large portions. I'm sad to have to change my review, but I don't feel that a 5 star rating is appropriate anymore. I have been going to Nara for years, but recently I have had some bad experiences. My favorite roll to order is the fresh salmon which is topped with cuts of raw salmon meat. There have been two times I have taken a bite only to find bones in the fish. I did not feel safe eating any more of my meal, so I sent it back. Up to this point I have chalked it up to a bad batch of fish, assuming that they came pre deboned. But, I guess this offended the owner because today after a month or so I decided to give Nara another shot and ordered something else. The owner recognized me and sent the waitress over to let me know they "Do not guarantee I won't find bones in my salmon." We left, not wanting to risk a choking hazard. This place was the most amazing waste of time. My family of 4 sat down to eat at 7 pm with a restaurant that was less than 1/3 full, we order a sushi plate for the 3 of us and the children's meal for my son. It was an hour and 20 MINUTES and all we got was hot tea, water, and a SUPER small bowl of miso soup. I was pissed. I asked the server 3 times where our food was and she reassured me that it should be out any minute. I asked her a final time and she said that the cook just started on our order. While others who walked in just before us and after us were eating, our family was still without our meal. I told her to just cancel our order and that we would go somewhere else, she reassured me that our food will be available with in MINUTES, 5 minutes later, she brings me the bill, I asked her what the hell? you said it was going to be "minutes" she said to me "you told me to bring you the bill" So we said forget it! Rest assure, on my way out, I told the couple who just sat down not to eat here that we were waiting nearly an hour and 30 minutes for our food. Than she has the balls to say "sorry, I couldn't get that to you sooner". I told her "you didn't even get it to us at all". We won't be going back and I've told many people not to go there so far. My guess is too that they're not even Japanese and more a spin off Koreans with no experience in the art of Sushi. read more

Taste is right on for Bulgogi. Price comparable for similar dish. Nicely remodeled decor. Quick service at an afternoon time. Hours may be limited. Clean restroom. Seems like a locally owned place (probably when it gets busy, they may end up slower). read more

For myself, not being from Billings and having tried sushi all over the country, this place was a HUGE let down. Not the worst sushi I ever had but it was just not good at all. To the people saying it's the best sushi, I would recommend taking a vacation and trying real sushi. It will blow your mind how bad this place is afterwards. Come here for the korean food. The sushi is way overpriced but the korean food is delicious and reasonable priced. I had the kimchi soup ( kimchi jigage) or soondoubou if you ask for no meat and it was amazing!! The sushi is fresh and tasty, rolls are a bit too large and pricey though. Biggest complaint comes from the wait. We have been there twice on Saturdays, and waited over an hour both times to eat. The first time we attributed it to a large party in before us. The second time though came from call in orders loading up the chefs. Almost walked out til we complained, and then our order was magically ready. Serve your in house customers and slow down the phone orders. Basically ruined the whole experience for us. Dae may not say much--the truth is that he speaks volumes with his palms and fingers, which create a combination of fish and rice that is absolutely sublime. Don't forget the size of his portions! The service was good, but it was very American style. The rolls were huge, as in you couldn't possibly stuff it into your mouth in one bite. My biggest gripe is that they are charging $20ish for rolls with fake "Krab" in them. If I'm going to be paying full price, please give me the real deal. This is a special family owned restaurant that serves the fresh, high quality sushi. It's a warm place owned by a great family. Years ago I came in all bummed about college and sushi was a pick me up. The owner's daughter delivered my plate and she said they could tell I was sad and he made something extra! My parents are good friends with the owners of this place and they treat us so well every time we eat there. Whenever I have the chance to visit Billings, I make sure I bring up Na Ra's. I'm not a huge sushi buff but everyone else and their dog is, and apparently this place does justice. I personally think the miso soup, rice and teriyaki chicken is the best in Billings. The restaurant is clean, well decorated and very warm feeling. Dates here are classy! read more

I read a review or two before eating at Nara and the complaint regarding portion sizes were to huge and American style is extremely accurate, which is why, it's the place to get Sushi in Billings. Unlike other sushi places I've eaten at, which have been good, Nara has left me full and satisfied. The younger gentleman preparing the Rolls takes pride in his craft while being personable. This eatery is the best kept secret in Billings, Mt. Great food and service by friendly staff and mangement. The Kimchee is the best I have ever had. Dae's mother is from the old country and has been making her Kimchee for most people of her life. My grandkids from Singapore love Sushi and love the quality and quantity of the Sushi. They only thing wrong with this place is that it is where I had sushi for the very first time...and it's ruined me to eat it any where else! We travel a lot, and nothing ever compares. We find ourselves rushing to Nara as soon as we step foot in town!! This is a family owned restaurant with custom made rolls, and it's like no other I have ever been to. It's not a quickie dining stop, if you want that go buy the packaged sushi from the grocery store (yuck!). Either plan get there early, or sit back with a glass of beer or wine and enjoy the conversation, while you watch the sushi chef create his masterpieces. He is always experimenting and coming up with new ideas for rolls, giving Nara its contemporary feel, while Mom is cooking up the best dang traditional Korean food you will find here in the states. If you don't know what to order, just ask some of the locals at the Sushi bar, most of them come in daily and you will not be led astray! Try the Rolling Red, Crunchy Salmon, Spicy Tuna, or you might just get lucky and he will have some of my favorite, Seared Tuna (shhhh it's a secret!). Did a call in order for dinner. Asked for 4 rolls and they advissd it would be 20 minutes. I think thats pretty adequate. Im not big on sushi so I got the smoked salmon roll and it was okay. But again I'm not big on sushi. The girlfriend got octopus and salmon rolls. She said the octopus was a little dry, but good. She said the salmon was great. The price was typicl for sushi. read more

You don't go to Nara and expect it to be out "quick" I don't know ANY good sushi place that is "fast" it usually is a wait--- Sushi is an art! I am from California and have eaten a LOT of sushi in my life-- and NARA by far is the BEST sushi I have EVER EVER HAD! YUM!
